Proper records are jus t not kept. We know that more than 850.000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital. Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher. A further quarter has only a part-time teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with ahospital teacher—and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents ortheir own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likelyto read books and do math or number work; without a teacher they would only play games. Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupied, and the latter is often all the teacher can do. The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”. Children tend to rely on concerned scho ol friends to keepin touch with school work. Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school. Once back at school children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best they can. Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.(本题10.0分)1.(单选题)At the beginning of the passage the author points out that __________.(本题2.0分)A.every child in hospital receives some teachingB.not enough is known about hospital teachingC.hospital teaching is of poor qualityD.the special children’s hospitals are worst off答案:B.解析:无.2.(单选题)It can be inferred from the latest survey that__________.(本题2.0分)A.hospital teaching across the country is similarB.each hospital has at least one part-time teacherC.all hospitals surveyed offer education to childrenD.only one-fourth of the hospitals have full-time teachers答案:D.解析:无.3.(单选题)It seemed that the children interviewed in hospital__________.(本题2.0分)A.liked having math lessons regularlyB.wanted to play gamed most of the timeC.did not expect to receive any teachingD.did not want any contact with their schools答案:C.解析:无.4.(单选题)24.14. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before theystart speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises. Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation leads on to deliberate imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, howeverwhether anything is gained when parents take advantage of thisability in an attempt to teach new sounds.(本题10.0分)1.(单选题)The author’s purpose in writing the first parag raph is to show that children ______.(本题2.0分)ually obey without asking questionsB.are passive in the process of learning to speakC.are born cooperativeD.learn to speak by listening答案:D.解析:无.2.(单选题)Children who start speaking late ________.(本题2.0分)A.may have problems with their listeningB.probably do not hear enough language spoken around themually pay close attention to what they hearD.often take a long time in learning to listen properly答案:D.解析:无.3.(单选题)Which of the following is TRU E about a baby’s first noises?(本题2.0分)A.That is an expression of his moods and feelings.B.That is an early form of language.C.That is a sign that he means to tell you something.D.That is an imitation of the speech of adults.答案:A.解析:无.4.(单选题)The speaker implies________.(本题2.0分)A.parents can never hope to teach their children new soundsB.children no longer imitate people after they begin to speakC.children who are good at imitating learning new words more quicklyD.even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoyimitating答案:D.解析:无.5.(单选题)The best title for this passage would be ______.(本题2.0分)A.How Babies Learn to SpeakB.Early Forms of LanguageC.A Huge Task for ChildrenD.Noise Making and Language Learning答案:A.解析:无.。

You might think there would be more programs devoted to entertainment than to anything else, but that’s not the case. In most countries, fewer than 20% of broadcasting hours are devoted to entertainment. U.S. figures are high—34.8%,and the fun loving Canadians are even higher with 44%. Except Canada and Italy, all countries give more broadcasting time to education than to either information (news, documentaries and so on) or entertainment programs. Of course, few educational broadcasts t ake place during peak viewing times. In Japan though, more than 60% of broadcasting time is taken up with education of one kind of another—just another example of thebusinesslike Japanese philosophy. In the U.K., the figure is 56.4%. The Italians have fewer educational programs than anyone else. They donin for entertainment either. Only about ten percent of viewing time is devoted to dramas and serials, quiz shows, music, sports, etc. You willfind more news information programs on Italian TV than anything else. That’s understandable in a country experiencing social and politicaland events are changes. Italians rely on TV to tell them what’s going on—happening almost too fast to follow. The percentage o f time the U.S. devoted to news and documentary programs is much smaller. After education, most TV time is given to entertainment. Many of these programs are shown around the world.41. Based on this passage, the percentage of TV broadcasting hoursdevoted to education is greatest in _______.A. JapanB. ItalyC. CanadaD. the United States42. S. figure is smaller than the U.K. figureC. the U.K. figure is second to the Japanese figureD. the Canadian figure is higher than that of any other country44. From this passage, w e learn that most TV stations in the worlddevoted more broadcasting hours to _______.A. educational programsB. entertainment programsC. news information programsD. dramas, serials, music, sports and so on45. In the United States, _______.A. Little is known about his early life except that his father died when he was 10. An uncle adopted him, his two sisters, and his brother. The uncle saw to itthat the two boys received a good education. Copernicus went to the University of Cracow. There he studied such subjects as Latin, mathematics, and astronomy. It was probably at that time that he changed his Polish name, Niklas Koppernigk, to the Latin form of Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1496 Copernicus went to Italy, where he spent the next 10 years studying at various universities. In Copernicus time people still believed that all things—the sun, the stars, and the planets—moved around the earth. It was an old belief that few men had ever questioned. Aristotle had based his theory of astronomy on this belief. Because the Church had long been the center of learning, the theory was also linked to religious beliefs. In 1506 Copernicus returned to his homeland. A few years later he began to work for the Church. All those years Copernicus carried on his work in astronomy. He had just the most basic equipment and, like other scientists of his day, made observations with only his eyes. Still, using mathematics and logic, Copernicus worked out a different theory, which held that the planets went around the sun.Copernicus did not announce his ideas. He did not want to make trouble. But he could not hide the scientific truth. So he talked about his theory with his friends, who strongly advised him to have his work published. His great book, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies, appeared at the very end of his life. Copernicus saw the first copy on theday he died, May 24, 1543.31. Which of the following is TRUE about Copernicus?A. He had two brothers and a sister.B. He used to be called Niklas Koppernigk.C. He lost his father soon after he was born.D. He spent 10 years at the University of Cracow.32. From the passage we can see that Astronomy is ______.A. the life experience of great menB. the movement of the stars and the planetsC. the scientific study of natural objects in spaceD. the theories developed by scientists of old times33. Copernicus developed his theory ______.A. using various telescopesB. based on Aristotle’s beliefsC. through observations and reasoningD. under the encouragement of his friends34. The writer of the passage wants us to know that ______.A. Copernicus did not tell about his discovery until the day of his deathB. for many years Copernicus dared to do nothing openly against the ChurchC. pushed by his friends Copernicus decided to write a book in May1543D. shortly before he got back to Poland Copernicus started to work for the Church35. (阅读理解题)The comfort zone is our living, work, and social environments that we have grown accustomed to. It determines the type of friends we make or people we associate with. It determines a life style we accept or reject.Young people are very adaptable; they can adjust to changing comfort zones with ease. They can socialize with homeless people in the morning and be equally at ease at a formal banquet in the evening. As we age, the ability to adapt towide-ranging comfort zones becomes more difficult. Social prejudice narrows the comfort zone range. The comfort zone can be a decision making tool.Comfort zones are directly related to our dreams or goals, which is associated with self-fulfilling prophecy(预言). In order to grow and change, we must first be discontent with our current comfort zone. We must realize that all meaningful and lasting changes occur first in daydreaming and then they work their way into reality. The more clearly and vividly we fantasize our dream, the stronger and more real the pictures on the subconscious level will become. Once our subconscious accepts thisimage and its expectation, it will go to work, searching for a way to bring it into reality. If we feel that these things are too good for us, we will find ways to fail. If, however, we intentionally imagine the change we want, build an expectation of the change mentally and emotionally, and we will find ways to acquire dream and, when mentally ready, it will arrive faster than we ever thought possible. For some people, problems, suffering, poverty, bad breaks are their comfort zone. They find comfort in finding fault and complaining about their misfortune. The same is true for businesses. Management and workers have grown used to seeing things go wrong and expect them too. Management finds comfort in finding fault with workers and workers and vice versa.Note: If the comfort zone we are seeking is beyond our current income, then, we need to develop a service that has greater value than our current one. Money, power and influence are not goals; they are rewards ONLY for personal achievement.(1). (单选题) As one grows older, ______. (阅读理解题)Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feeling must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself o r herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism: they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in buildingself-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.(1). Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are 12 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneThis is not the world we know. This world is controlled by computers. Men and women can be seen, but they are following orders given to them by machines. The machines were designed by mad scientists, but at some point even the mad scientists were taken over by their super-inventions.Does this sound familiar? You have probably read something like it in magazines or books, or seen it in a film. Why is it so popular? One of the reasons is that it reflects the fears of many people; fear of the unknown, fear of what is not understood or, at least, fear of something that is not completely understood. The fact is that every day it seems that computers take control of another area of our lives. Some factory jobs are now done by robots and the robots are controlled by computers. Our bank accounts are managed by computers. At the airport, our tickets are sold by a computer. Certainly, many of these operations are made more efficient by computers, but our admiration is sometimes mixed with unsafe feelings. And this lack of safety is caused by the fact that we do not know how computers do these things, and we really don’t know what th ey might do next. But we can find out how computers work, and once we understand them, we can use computers instead of worrying about being used by them. Today, there is a new generation of computer wizards (奇才) who know exactly how computers get things done. These young men and women, usually university students, are happy to sit for hours, sometimes for days, designing programs, not eating, not sleeping, but discovering what can be done by these wonderful slaves which they have learned to control. These computer wizards have learned to use the computer and search for new tasks for their machines.161. We can know that the scientists who designed the machines _____________.A. are careless in their daily lifeB. are unkind and cruelC. are out of their mindD. have great abilities162. The reason why many people are afraid of computers is that ____________.A. they don't know anything about computersB. they haven't really understood computersC. there are so many computer gamesD. computers are often down163. The author mentions computer wizards in order to point out that ____________.A. computers can be controlled by manB. there should be more people devoted to computersC. only young people are interested in computersD. more time and energy is required to control computers164. This passage is probably written to suggest that ____________.A. some day computers can deal with all human problemsB. computers can be used in place of traveling to our jobsC. people should not fear computersD. computer technolog y will not meet people’s needs in various situations165. The author's attitude (态度) towards widely used computers is_________.A. positiveB. anxiousC. worriedD. curiousPassage TwoKnowledge is power. But there is another thing we must remember. An intelligent mind needs a strong body to make it most useful. There are a great many good exercises for building up our bodies. Many of them may be done indoors in rainy weather. Indoor exercises, however, are never as helpful as those taken out of doors because in the open air there is more oxygen. The air in the house is not fresh. But out of doors it is very fresh, especially in the morning. But what shall we play? There are a number of games such as football, basketball, races and so on. Any game with plenty of exercises is good.Do not neglect your health. It is of as much importance as your mind. Our country now needs people with creative minds, good judgment, and healthy bodies.166. One who has an intelligent mind is ______ .A. very strongB. very healthyC. very cleverD. very stupid167. “An intelligent mind needs a strong body to make it useful.” means ______ .A. if you want to make your strong body useful, you must have an intelligent mindB. in order to make your intelligent mind useful, you must have a strong bodyC. to make your strong mind and strong body most useful you need a strong bodyD. if you have a strong body you will have a strong mind168. Which of the following statements is true?A. Indoor exercises are as helpful as outdoor ones.B. Indoor exercises are no more helpful than outdoor exercises.C. Neither indoor exercises nor outdoor exercises are helpful.D. Outdoor exercises are more helpful than indoor ones.169. The air in the house does not remain fresh very long. It’s be cause ______.A. the fresh air can’t come into the houseB. there is only a little fresh air coming in and a little waste going outC. the air in the house can’t move at allD. the house gives off wastes170. Our country now ______ with creative minds, good judgment and healthy bodies.A. needs men and womenB. only needs menC. only needs scientistsD. does not need women but menPassage ThreeSurvival is an art. Survivors are artists. The best acting is done in daily life, not on the stage. My late uncle Sir Alexander Korda, the motion-picture producer who could “charm money out of an empty safe”, was a gifted survivor.Once, a group of investors called him in to complain that he had lost 5 000 000 of their money. Most men would have tried to defend themselves. Alex did not. “You are right,” he said quietly, “I have been wasteful, and careless. I have chosen the wrong scri pts, paid too little attention to the budgets. I am too old for this business. I will retire. I on ly hope you will forgive me.”Within an hour, the investors were busy encouraging Alex, cheering him up. It was out of the question for him to resign; they wouldn’t hear it. And by lunchtime, Alex had 2 000 000 more of their money and was back in the action again. When I asked him if he was happy about it, he said, “No. They would have put up three or four million, I think. Still, it’s a good lesson for you to learn. Always s ettle for less than you could get. It doesn’t hurt to have a reputation as a gentleman.”171. According to the author, Sir Alexander Korda is an excellent artist because ______.A. he is a motion-picture producerB. he knows well about how to surviveC. he had a gift to act in the movieD. he can get large amounts of money from investors172. The phrase to “charm money out of an empty safe” in the context means .A. to put all your money to your savings accountB. to draw your money back if it is not in a safe place。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write your choice on the Answer Sheet.第一部分Passage 1Some cities have planned their transportation systems for ear owners. That is what Los Angeles did. Los Angeles decided to build highways for cars rather than spending money on public transportation. This decision was suitable for Los Angeles. The city grew outward instead of upward. Los Angeles never built many tall apartment buildings. Instead, people live in houses with gardens. In Los Angeles, most people drive cars to work. And every car has to have a parking space. So many buildings where people work also have parking tots.Los Angeles also became a city without a Central Business District (CBD). If a city has a CBD, crowds of people rush into it every day to work. If people drive to work, they need lots of road space. So Los Angeles developed several business districts and built homes and other buildings in between the districts. This required more roads and parking spaces. Some people defend this growth pattern. They say Los Angeles is the city of the future.46. According to the passage, Los Angeles is a city where ______.A. there is no public transportation systemB. more money is spent on highways for carsC. more money is spent on public transportation systemsD. public transportation is more developed than in other cities47. "The city grew outward instead of upward" (Line 1, Para. 2) means ______.A. the city became more spread out instead of growing tallerB. there were fewer small houses than tall buildingsC. rapid development took place in the city centerD. many tall buildings could be found in the city48. According to the passage, if a city has several business districts, ______.A. people won't have to drive to work every dayB. there have to be more roads and parking spacesC. companies would be located in between the districtsD. there would be no need to build parking spaces within the districts49. According to the growth pattern of Los Angeles, homes were mainly built ______.A. in the city centerB. along the main roadsC. around business districtsD. within the business districts50. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the construction of parking spaces in Los AngelesB. the new growth pattern of the city of Los AngelesC. the public transportation system in Los AngelesD. the problem of traffic jams iii Los AngelesPassage 2What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, and Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurementsare used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.51. What makes a scientist according to the passage? ________A. The tools he uses.B. The way he uses his tools.C. His ways of learning.D. The various tools he uses.52. The underlined part in the passage shows_______.A. the importance of informationB. the importance of thinkingC. the difference between scientists and ordinary peopleD. the difference between carpenters and people with other jobs53. A sound scientific theory should be one that _________.A. works not only under one set of conditions at one time, but also under the sameconditions at other timesB. does not allow any changes even under different conditionsC. can be used for many purposesD. leaves no room for improvement54. The author quotes the case of Albert Einstein to illustrate __________.A. that measurements are keys to success in scienceB. that accuracy of mathematicsC. that investigations are important in scienceD. that the mathematical calculations may test his investigations55. What is the main idea of the passage? ________A. The theory of relativity.B. Exactness is the core of science.C. Scientists are different from ordinary people.D. Exactness and ways of using tools are the keys to the making of a scientist.第二部分:Passage 1Perhaps you are going to finish school soon and, like many other students, youwant to further your study abroad. (阅读理解)Successful and happy distance learners have a few characteristics in common. Compare yourself to the following list to determine whether or not online classes are a good fit for your personality and habits. 1. Successful distance learners do just as well, if not better, without people looking over their shoulder. While some people need teachers to keep them motivated and on-task, distance learners are able to motivate themselves. They realize that they will never be face-to-face with the people who give them assignments and grade their work, but they don’t need others to encourage them. The most successful students are self-motivated and set their own goals. 2. Successful distance learners never (or at least rarely) put off their assignments or wait until the last moment to write their papers. These students enjoy the freedom of working at their own pace and appreciate the ability to complete their work in as much time as it takes them, instead of waiting for an entire class. However, they understand that putting off their work too often can end up adding months, if not years, to their studies. 3. Successful distance learners have good reading comprehension skills. While most people learn by listening to lectures and taking notes, the majority of distance learners are expected to master material through reading alone. Although some distance learning courses offer video recordings and audio clips, most programs require that students understand a large amount of information that is only available through written text. These students are able to comprehend texts at the college level without the direct guidance of a teacher. 4. Successful distance learners can resist constant distractions. Whether it’s the phone ringing off the hook, the kids screaming in the kitchen, or the temptation of TV programs, everyone faces distractions. Successful students know how to filter out the constant disturbances that threaten their progress. They feel comfortable turning down an invitation or letting the machine pick up the phone when they know there is work to be done. (本题10分)1. (单项选择)Which of the following is NOT included in the successful distance learners’ characteristics? (本题2分)A. Being self-motivated.B. Being self-disciplined.C. (阅读理解)If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise-and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japanappeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. (The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.) Contraction of front and side parts was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and-seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple remedy to the contraction normally associated with age-using the head. The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant. Matsuzawa’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen th e brain cells need. “The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,” he says. “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don’t rely on pocket calculators.” (本题10分)1. (单项选择)The team of doctors wanted to find out __________. For each question there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. Chose the best answer to each question.Passage OneEverybody knows that the favorite food in the United States is the hamburger. It seems impossible, but people eat 34,000,000,000 hamburgers a year. This is enough to make a line of hamburgers around the world four times. The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast-food restaurant. In these restaurants, people order their food, wait just a few minutes and carry it to their tables themselves. They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home,at work,or in a park. At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. They order the food, and a worker hands it to them through the window. Then they eat in their car.Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches,or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fried potatoes),shakes (a drink made from milk and ice cream),soft drinks, and coffee.Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a company's restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same,if they eat in New York or San Francisco, it will still be the same.11. According to the passage, what food do Americans like best?A. Beef.B. Sandwiches.C. Hamburger.D. Fries.12. Where can Americans eat a hamburger?A. At home.B. In a park.C. In their car.D. People can eat fast food at work or in a park.Passage TwoGoing to court can be frightening, especially if you area child. You may have to stand up in the witness box,and swear to tell the truth and answer questions in front of a crowd of adults. It would be even more frightening if you were the victim of a crime and you had to sit in the same courtroom as the person accused of attacking you,for instance. So the law in Britain has made it easier for children to act as witnesses. Children are allowed to tell what they know, from another room in the same courthouse,in this way they do not have to face all those people in the courtroom. It works on a closed-circuit (闭路的)television link, which means that the TV only operates inside the court. The child witness sits in a room with a social worker in front of a TV camera. Everyone in the court room can see the child on a TV screen, but the child can only see the judge and the lawyers who will ask him or her questions. The system has been so successful that it will be extended to more courts this year.Another way to make it easy for a child to act a witness is to set up a screen in the court room around the witness box so that the child cannot see the defendant (被告).Information given by children can be very important to a court trial,butbefore1988 the law did not really recognize that children told the truth. It stated that anything a child said in court had to be supported by other evidence in the case.16. A child witness,if he were the victim of the crime, would be frightened most by________. A. all the questions he had to answerB. the crowd of adults he had to faceC. the judge and the lawyersD. the person accused of attacking him17. Not very good.B. Very successful.C. Just an experiment.D. Hardly acceptable.19, Has the law always recognized the importance of children's information in court?A. No.B. Yes.C. Not until 1988.D. Before 1988,yes.20. 五、阅读理解、完形填空题(共5道小题)41.Online degree programs have come a long way since their early days. Traditional colleges an d universities have developed distance learning programs to accommodate individuals who would not otherwise have the time or funds to earn an advanced degree. Online programs require the same amount of study and work as a classroom program. If you are under the impression that c ourses offered online will be a walk in the park, think again! Online degree programs are often more difficult than traditional university programs due to the fact the work and study is left up to the student. Time management skills are crucial, since there is not a particular time of the day set aside specifically for study. It may take some time to become accustomed to this method of scholarship, but the pros of online classes may outweigh the cons in your situation. The main difference between online degree programs and traditional higher education is the l ocation of learning. Instead of being confined to a stuffy classroom filled with students, these onli ne classes have a more personal feeling. While many students would be hesitant to speak one t o one with a class instructor, online programs find their students more willing to contact their pro fessors via e-mail. This great participation encourages better understanding of the course materia l. Of course, not attending a class also comes with additional barriers. A student must be equipp ed with time management skills in order to succeed in an online class. Students that lack the pr oper time management skills may find themselves overwhelmed with course work at the end of t he semester or falling behind in their studies.Whether you choose to attend a traditional college or university or enroll in an online higher education program, the chances of success are equal. In the end, it is up to you in order to co mplete the course of study and earn your degree. For busy individuals or students wishing to ret urn to school without greatly affecting their everyday lives, an online degree program may be the best option.[共5题](1) According to the passage, the main difference between online degree programs and traditiona l higher education is __________. (阅读理解题)Most of us compare ourselves with anyone we think is happier –a relative, an acquaintance or, often someone we barely know. I once met a young man who struck me as particularly successful and happy. He spoke of his love for his beautiful wife and their three daughters, and of his joy at being a radio talk show host in a city he loved.I remember thinking that he was one of those lucky few for whom everything goes effortlessly right. Then we started talking about the Internet. He blessed its existence, he told me, because he could look up information on multiple sclerosis – the terrible disease afflicting his wife.I felt like a fool for assuming nothing unhappy existed in his life. One effective way of destroying happiness is to look at something and focus on even the smallest flaw. It’s like looking at the tiled ceiling and concentrating on the space where one tile is missing. As a bald man toldme, “Whenever I enter a room, all I see is hair.” Once you’ve determined what your missing tile is, explore whether acquiring it will really make you happy. Then do one of the three things: get it, replace it with a different tile, or forget about it and focus on the tiles in your life that are not missing. We all know people who have had a relatively easy life yet are essentially unhappy. And we know people who have suffered a great deal but generally remain happy. The first secret is gratitude. All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy. The second secret is realizing that happiness is a byproduct of something else. The most obvious sources are those pursuits that give our lives purpose. Finally, we need a spiritual faith, or a philosophy of life. If you choose to find the positive in virtually every situation, you will be blessed, and if you choose to find the awful, you will be cursed.(1). (单选题) What is NOT mentioned about the young man the author met?(本题2.0分)A、His careerB、His parentsC、His attitude towards lifeD、His wife标准答案:B(2). (阅读理解题)The World Trade Organization (WTO), founded on January 1, 1995, aims to encourage international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected and that any disputes can be settled. In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well known as one of the world's most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (国际货币基金组织).The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs (关税) and Trade (GATT) was formed after World War II.As time went by, it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks—the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes. After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the so-called Uruguay Round (乌拉圭回合谈判) finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and to form new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property.Even after seven years of talks and with 22,500 pages of agreements reached problems remained, especially in the difficult-to-deal-with areas of agriculture and services.(1). (阅读理解题)Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very rich people who are as miserable as if they were living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems. Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness. Lottery winnings do not bring happiness. Gambling winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contributiontowards others’ happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort. If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill-earned money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you will not be happy with it. You will think you are a base person. Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem. Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” There is no use saying “Someday when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.” Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things to happen and depend on external circumstances of life to make you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.(1). (阅读理解题)Advertisements make us want too much, so we get the idea that the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. But it is not completely right. Advertisement has another equally important function —to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washer, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or anewspaper full of bad news. We must not forget that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programs is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price! Another thing we mustn’t forget is the ‘small ads.’ in virtu ally every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job; buy or sell a house; announce a birth, marriage, or death in these small ads.(1). Each passage is followed by five questionse For each question there are four choices marked A , B ,C and D・ Chose the best answer to each question.Passage OneEverybody knows that the favorite food in the United States is the hamburger. They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home, at work, or in a park. At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. They order the food, and a worker hands it to them through the window. Then they eat in their car.Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches, or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fried potatoes) , shakes (a drink made from milk and ice cream),soft drinks, and coffee. Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a company's restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same, if they eat in New York or San Francisco, it will still be the same.11.According to the passage, what food do Americans like best?A.Beef.B.Sandwiches.C.Hamburger.D.Fries.12.Where can Americans eat a hamburger?A.At home.B.In a park.C.In their car.D・ At any of the places mentioned above.13-Fast food is ________ .A.deliciousB.unpopularC.inexpensiveD.of high quality14.The last paragraph tells us ________ •A.fast-food is very popularB.people like to eat in fast-food restaurantsC.why fast-food restaurants are very popularD.you can eat fast-food any where in the US15.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Fast-food restaurants are very popular.B.People in the US eat enough hamburgers to make a line around the world.C.Some people eat fast food in parks-D.People can eat fast food at work or in a park.Passage TwoGoing to court can be frightening, especially if you area child・ You may have to stand up in the witness box, and swear to tell the truth and answer questions in front of a crowd of adults. It would be even more frightening if you were the victim of a crime and you had to sit in the same courtroom as the person accused of attacking you,for instance. So the law in Britain has made it easier for children to act as witnesses. Children are allowed to tell what they know, from another room in the same courthouse, in this way they do not have to face all those people in the courtroom. The system has been so successful that it will be extended to more courts this year.Another way to make it easy for a child to act a witness is to set up a screen in the court room around the witness box so that the child cannot see the defendant (被告).Information given by children can be very important to a court trial, butbeforel988 the law did not really recognize that children told the truth. It stated that anything a child said in court had to be supported by other evidence in the case.16.A child witness , if he were the victim of the crime ,would be frightened most by ________ • A. all the questions he had to answe rB.the crowd of adults he had to faceC.the judge and the lawyersD.the person accused of attacking him17.The most important point of the new system that made things easier for a child witness is that ___ .A・ he does not see the defendantB.he speaks in front of a TV cameraC< he is in another room in the same courthouseD.everyone in the courtroom can see the child18.What does the author think of the new system according to the third paragraph?A・ Not very good.B.Very successful.C- Just an experimenteD.
