Boost Your Mood in Just About AnySituationWritten on 9/30/2008 by Ali Hale. Ali runs Alpha Student, a blog packed with academic, financial and practical tips to help students get the most out of their time at university. Photo Credit: wrhowellWe all have days when we feel down in the dumps. Whether it’s getting out of bed on the wrong side, having a stressful patch at work, the miserable weather, or just an inexplicably bad mood –there are some easy tactics you can rely on to cheer up instantly. If the mood is derived from something within your control, fix it as soon as possible and you'll feel a huge weight lifted off your mind. If it's something you simply can't shake, do an end-around and boost your mood simply to spite it.Here are some simple end-around moves you can consider. More likely however, you'll catch onto the idea and create your own.Wearing your favorite sweaterIf you’ve woken up grouchy, put on your favorite sweater, your lucky socks, or that piece of jewelery your partner gave you. Iguarantee you’ll start the day in a better frame of mind. Wearing something which you have an emotional attachment to is almost as good as a hug!Baking a cakeI love rolling up my sleeves and getting busy in the kitchen, especially when the result is something sweet and delicious! Dig out your favorite recipe for a cake, brownies, cookies or some other treat –and get busy. Long before that delicious baking aroma fills your kitchen, you’ll be cheerful again. If you wake up grouchy everyday, you may want to skip this one. A cake each day is not the answer unless you're giving them away!Listening to Monty Python songsMonty Python (a comedy sketch group) has produced some hilarious songs. It really isn’t possible to listen to these and keep a straight face –go on, try it. Here’s a few of my favourites: Philosophers Song (with lyrics and images of the philosophers mentioned)Brave Sir Robin (with the film clip and subtitles)Walking outsideIf I’m in a ratty mood during the workday, it’s usually because I’ve been at my desk writing for too long without moving around. I find that a brisk walk always cheers me up. Most of us need to improve our sedentary lifestyle. Get outside for half an hour, and walk off some of that excess energy –for the sake of your physical and mental health. The beauty of natureAnother benefit to getting outside is to drink-in your surroundings. If you can, get to a park, meadow, wood or other green space. Look at the trees, the leaves, the grass, and drink in all the colours. There’s always something beautiful to see –if we just take a few minutes to stop and look.Your friendsWhen you’re feeling down, chatting to friends is a great way to perk up. Even if you’re feeling misanthropic, why not give someone a ring and arrange to meet up for a coffee? Or, write an email to someone you’ve been out of touch with for a while.Reading a novelSometimes, we all need to escape from life for a bit. I findgetting into a great novel is an ideal way to do that. Curl up in your armchair with a book by one of your favorite authors and let yourself get absorbed in the story. For me, this works much better than trying to cheer myself up reading online –email and other distractions make it very hard to switch off mentally.Tidying up / declutteringAlthough chores feel like the last thing you want to do when you’re in a bad mood, getting rid of mess and clutter will definitely make you feel happier. Our environment has a strong effect on how we feel –so make sure you’re working (or relaxing) in a place that’s comfortable to be in. The other bonus of getting on with some tidying is that you’ll get a sense of achievement from it –a great spur to doing more, if you’re feeling lethargic or lazy.Taking a bathI often feel that I’m too busy to luxuriate in the bath –but I know that’s not true. Taking some time out to really relax will make you far more motivated and productive, and a long soak in a bubble-filled bath is the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day for a good night’s sleep.Being gratefulOne good way to feel happy is to list all the things you’re grateful about. (This can also be quite humbling if you’re feeling hard done by.) Sit down with a piece of paper and pen somewhere quiet, and write down all the things in your life that you want to say thank you for. They can be little or big, silly or profound. How do you cheer up when you’re feeling down?1 2。

Babe is a word used to address a young woman, or your wife, husband or lover, usually expressing affection but sometimes considered offensive if used by a manto a woman he does not know. Now many people use it to refer to an attractiveyoung woman, for example: she is really a babe.

Seated with Stuart and Brent Tarleton in the cool shade of the porch of Tara, her father’s plantation , that bright April afternoon of 1861, she made a pretty picture. Her new green flowered-muslin dress spread its twelve yards of billowing material over her hoops and exactly matched the flat-heeled green morocco slippers her father had recently brought her from Atlanta. The dress set off to perfection the seventeen-inch waist, the smallest in three counties, and the tightly fitting basque showed breasts well matured for her sixteen years.1861年四月一个晴朗的下午,思嘉同塔尔顿家的孪生兄弟斯图尔特和布伦特坐在她父亲的塔拉农场阴凉的走廊里,她的美貌显得更明媚如画了。

Since the pre-historic times, man has had an urge to satisfy his needs. Be it hunger, shelter or search for a mate, he has always manipulated the circumstances to the best of his advantages. Probably this might be the reason why we human are the most developed of all living species on the earth, and probably also in the universe. As we climbed the steps of evolution with giant leaps, we somehow left behind common sense and logical thinking —we forgot that we have stopped thinking ahead of times.

If you are hungry, what do you do? Grab a piece of your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? Just like your stomach, even your mind is hungry. But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your dream lover, favorite star and many such absurd things. So it silently began to heed to your needs and never let itself grow. When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think "What happens next?", "Why can't I think?", "Why am I always given the difficult problems?" Well this is the aftermath of our own karma of using our brain for thinking of not-so-worthy things.

Wolfram Wilss

The Gifts of the Little PeopleJacob and Wilhelm GrimmA tailor and a goldsmith were journeying together when one evening, just as the sun had sunk behind the mountains, they heard the sound of distant music. It grew more and more distinct. It had a strange sound, but was so pleasing that they forgot their fatigue and walked speedily ahead. The moon had already risen when they arri ved at a hill, upon which they viewed a large number of small men and women who were holding hands and dancing around and cheerfully singing with the greatest ple asure and happiness. That was the music that the wanderers had heard. An old man, somewhat larger than the others, sat in their midst. He wore a brigh tly colored jacket, and his ice-gray beard hung down over his chest. Filled with amaze ment, the two wanderers stopped and watched the dance. The old man motioned to them that they too should join in, and the little people voluntarily opened their circle. The goldsmith, who had a hump on his back, and ——like all hunchbacks ——was forward enough, stepped right up. The tailor was at first a little shy and held ba ck, but as soon as he saw what fun it was, he too took heart and joined in.They closed the circle again, and the little people sang and danced wildly forth. However, the old man took a broad knife, that had been hanging from his belt, shar pened it, and as soon as it was sufficiently sharpened, looked at the strangers. They were frightened, but they did not have to worry for long. The old man grabbed thegoldsmith and with the greatest speed smoothly shaved off his beard and the hair fr om his head. Then the same thing happened to the tailor.Their fear disappeared when the old man patted them friendly on their shoulders as if he wanted to say that they had done well by letting it all happen without resis ting. With his finger he pointed toward a pile of coal that lay nearby, and indicated t o them through gestures that they should fill their pockets with it. They both obeyed, although they did not know of what use the coal would be to them. Then they wen t on their way to seek out a place to spend the night. They had just arrived in the valley when the bell from a neighboring monastery s truck twelve. The singing ceased instantly. Everyone disappeared, and the hill lay in lo nely moonlight. The two wanderers found shelter. Lying on beds of straw, they covered themselve s with their jackets. They were so tired that they forgot to take the coal out of their pockets first. They were awakened earlier than normal by a heavy weight pressing down on th eir limbs. They reached into their pockets, and could hardly believe their eyes when t hey saw that they were not filled with coal, but with pure gold. Further, their hair an d their beards had also been fully restored. Now they were rich. However, the goldsmith had twice as much as the tailor, bec ause ——true to his greedy nature ——he had filled his pockets better. However m uch a greedy person has, he always wants more, so the goldsmith proposed to the tailor that they stay there another day in order to be able to gain even more wealth f rom the old man on the mountain that evening. The tailor did not want to do this, and said: "I have enough and am satisfied. I a m going to become a master, marry my pleasant object (as he called his sweetheart), and be a happy man."However, to please the goldsmith, he agreed to stay one more day. That evening the goldsmith hung several pockets over his shoulders in order to be able to carry e verything, and set off for the hill.As had happened the night before, he found the little people dancing and singin g. The old man shaved him smooth once again, and indicated that he should take so me coal. Without hesitating he packed away as much as his pockets would hold, and then happily returned home. Covering himself with his jacket he said: "I can bear it, if the gold presses down on me." With the sweet premonition that he would awaken tomorrow as a very rich man, he fell asleep. When he opened his eyes, he got up quickly in order to examine his pockets. Ho w astounded he was, that he pulled out nothing but black coal, however often he re ached inside. "Anyway, I still have the gold from the night before," he thought, and r eached for it. Horrified, he saw that it too had turned back into coal. He struck hims elf on the forehead with his grimy hand, and felt that his entire head was as bald an d smooth as his beardless chin.Nor was that the end of his misfortune. Only now did he notice that in addition the hump on his back, a second one, of the same size, had grown onto his chest. N ow he recognized the punishment for his greed and began to cry aloud. The good tailor, who had been awakened by all this, consoled the unhappy man as best he could, saying: "You were my traveling companion, and you can stay with me now and live from my treasure."He kept his word, but the poor goldsmith had to bear two humps and cover his bald head with a cap as long as he lived.

Men, dogs, birds and beasts of prey were all their enemies, and killed and devoured them daily: and sooner than endure such persecution any longer, they one and all determined to end their miserable lives. Thus resolved and desperate, they rushed in a body towards a neighbouring pool, intending to drown themselves. On the bank were sitting a number of frogs, who, when they heard the noise of the hares as they ran, with one accord leaped into the water and hid themselves in the depths. Then one of the older hares who was wiser than the rest cried out to his companions, “Stop, my friends, take heart;don“t let us destroy ourselves after all: see, here are creatures who are afraid of us, and who must, therefore, be still more timid than ourselves."

A Clever Interpreter
A famous writer who was visiting Japan was invited to deliver a lecture at a university to a large number of students. As most of them could not understand English, he had to have an interpreter.

During his lecture he told an amusing story which went on for rather a long time. At last he stopped to allow the interpreter to translate it into Japanese, and was very surprised when the man did this in a few seconds, after which all the students laughed loudly.

Atter the lecture, the writer thanked the interpreter for his good work and then said to him, "Now please tell me how you
translated that long story of mine into such a short Japa nese one."
"I didn't tell the story at all," the interpreter answered with a smile. "I just said, The honourable lecturer has just told a funny story. You will all laugh, please.'"

'"。
