About 40 per cent of the population’s f ood and a large proportion of the raw materials used by industry have to be imported. In 1980 exports of goods and services were equal to about 25 per cent of the Gross National Product. In the exports of manufactures, the UK, in recent years, has done less well than her major competitors. The UK’s share of the value of the main manufacturing countries’ exports fell from 16 percent in 1980 to about 9 per cent in 1999. This was due to the fact that the volume of UK exports increased at an annual average rate of 5 per cent, only about one-half the rate achieved by the main manufacturing countries as a whole and about one-third the rate for Japan.Changes in the commodity composition of exports have been very small in recent years. The share of manufactured goods has increased slightly while the share of basic materials has declined. There has been a steady decline in the share of textiles and an increase in the share of chemicals in total exports. Over the next decade the possibility of exporting North Sea Oil and the diminishing dependence on imported oil should have a beneficial effect on the UK’s visible trade balance. The most striking change in the geographical distribution of UK exports in recent years has been the swing away from the traditional Commonwealth markets and a growing dependence on the market in Western Europe. Exports to Western Europe accounted for about 34 per cent of UK exports in 1989 but by 2000 this share had grown to nearly 60 per cent. This is much in line with developments in world trade as a whole, because trade between industrialized countries has been the fastest growing sector of world trade. The other important development is the growing importance of the markets in the oil-exporting countries.()1. The export of manufactures of U.K. during recent years .A. has risen.B. has done better than the major competitors.C. has fallenb48A Uni--20--20学年第一学期工作计划9864D. has done less well that developing countries.()2. The export of textiles .A. has declinedB. has declined sharplyC. has increased slightlyD. has increased sharply()3. The export of basic materials .A. has increasedB. has declinedC. has remained steadyD. has little changed()4. What is the most striking change in UK exports?A. The swing away from the traditional Commonwealth markets and a growing dependence on themarket in Western Europe.B. Changes in the commodity composition of exports.C. The increase of the share of manufactured goods and the decline of the share of basic materials.D. the beneficial effect of the export of oil on the UK’s visible trade balance.()5. Which statement is not true?A. UK is exporting more to Western Europe.B. trade between UK and Western Europe has been the fastest growing sector of world trade.C. UK will possibly import less oil over the next decade.D. UK is exporting more chemicals.Passage TwoIs a quiet revolution under way in the nation’s shopping habits? Are we gradually allowing an increasingly select number of large companies to take care of all our basic requirements? The supermarket chains certainly hope so. ‘People don’t have the time to shop around any more. If they’re happy with the quality of a company’s service, then they’re likely to buy other product types from them as well,’ says Jim Austin, an industry analyst. With the major supermarket brands such as Tesco, J Sainsbury and Asda already offering financial services, credit cards, own-label clothing, mobile phones, and cut-price electrical goods including computers, Austin believes that the supermarkets’ diversification is set to continue.‘The UK retail food market is saturated, so their only real prospect of growth is either to enter foreignb58A Uni--20--20学年第一学期工作计划9864markets or diversify into new markets at home..’ Tesco and J Sainsbury have done both. Having already bought foreign subsidiaries, both large supermarket chains have set up their own banks in order to offer customers financial services such as personal loans, mortgages and savings accounts.Together, the two new banks took over £2bn of customer deposits within the first year of trading. ‘They are winning business by using a lower cost base to offer their customers better interest rates on savings than traditional banks,’ says Austin. However, there are question marks over long-term profitability. The traditional providers say there is bound to come a point when the new banks will eventually want to widen margins and boost profits. ‘When they start to raise prices, they might create bad publicity, which could hurt their brand,’ says one observer. ‘How will a major supermarket react, for instance, when it is faced with having to repossess a regular shopper’s home?’Shoppers, however, do not share these fears. A recent survey of 1,000 people by brand consultants Cook & Pearson concludes that shoppers will continue to buy a wider range of goods and services from supermarkets. Many people said that they would be prepared to buy a supermarket own-label car or even a house from a supermarket-branded estate agent. Interest was also shown in combining a food shopping trip with a visit to a supermarket dentist.Loyalty schemes are another incentive for customers. ‘Most supermarkets now offer bonus points with every purchase. These points add up to free air miles or cash discounts, so it really pays to stay loyal to the brand in all its diversified forms,’ says Austin.()6 Why are the large UK supermarket chains diversifying? _____________.A. Because the retail food market in the UK has been occupied by foreign companies.B. Because the retail food market in the UK is saturated.C. Because the retail food market in the UK is quite small.D. Because diversification into new markets can promote the growth of the retail food market in theUK.()7 How are the supermarkets able to attract business in the banking sector? ____________.A. Because they can offer more services.B. Because they can offer more varieties of commodities.C. Because they can offer better interest rates.D. Because they can offer free car parking for customers.()8 What are the risks involved with brandstretching? _________________.A. There may come a point when providers will want to raise prices.B. There may come a point when providers lose all their banking business.b68A Uni--20--20学年第一学期工作计划9864C. There may come a point when customers lose their confidence in the banking sector.D. All the UK large supermarkets will have to close all their banking business.()9 How do the large UK supermarket chains encourage brand loyalty? ___________.A. By offering free samples of commodities.B. By offering a wide range of goods and services.C. By offering convenient banking services.D. By offering loyalty schemes like bonus points.()10 The headline “Banking on a brand” means ______________.A. selling a brandB. purchasing a brandC. relying on a brandD. stretching a brandIII.Business Translation: 20%(商务翻译,20分)Section A Directions: There are ten terms in this section. In its first phase (1994-1997), e-commerce was about presence: making sure that everybody had a web site, meeting the demand that every company, large or small, get out there and have at least something on the Internet. People weren't quite sure why they were doing it, but they knew that they had to have an online presence. The second phase (1997-2000) of e-commerce was about transactions buying and selling over digital media. The focus in this phase was on order flow and gross revenue. Some of that was the matching of buyers and sellers who never would have found each other in the past. Some of it was simply taking transactions that would have been done through paper purchase orders and saying that this business was done on the Internet, although the meaning of that change was quite insignificant. But in this phase, the announcements were all about order flow at any cost: why-sell-it-when-you-can-give-it-away business models. As a result, many of the first movers in this phase such as V alue America, are either gasping, have gasped their last breath, or are flailing about in a sea of red ink.Today, e-commerce is entering the third phase (2000-?), with a focus on how the Internet can impact profitability. And profitability is not about increasing gross revenues but rather increasing gross margins. We call this phase e-business, and it includes all the applications and processes enabling a company to service a business transaction. Thus, e-business is not just about e-commerce transactions or about buying and selling over the Web: it's the overall strategy of redefining old business models, with the aid of technology, to maximize customer value and profits. To paraphrase Business Week: “Forget B2B and B2C, E-business is about P2P-path to profitability."( ) 1.Between 1994 and 1997, companies built their web sites mainly because they .A. wanted to find more customersB. had no other things to doC. wanted to show their existence on InternetD. felt the Internet was quite interesting( ) 2.In the second phase of e-commerce, companies were satisfied that they . A.have built their own web sites on InternetB. have taken some transactions through InternetC. took transactions through paper purchase ordersD. take transactions through paper purchase orders( ) 3.What does “the first movers" (para. 2) most probably mean?A. The first motivations for the companies to take e-commerce.B. The earliest transformation of transactions from paper orders to e-commerce.C. The first companies that have failed in the field of e-commerce.D. The earliest companies that get involved in e-commerce.( ) 4.The earliest e-commerce began in the year of .A. 1994B. 1997C. 1999D. 2000( ) 5.What does the last sentence in the passage most probably mean?A. B2B and B2C are no longer suitable e-business models.B. The aim of taking e-business is to earn more profit.C. E-business is by no means a good way of getting profit.D. P2P is the most suitable e-business model.Passage TwoWalk into a street market anywhere from Manila to Manchester, and someone will be selling T-shirts branded with the distinctive CK logo of Calvin Klein, the New York fashion designer. If the price is very low, the T-shirts are probably fakes. Calvin Klein, like most other internationally-known fashion designers, has, for a long time, had problems with counterfeits selling poor quality merchandise bearing his brand name. Now he is doing something about it. “As the Calvin Klein brand has become well-known, we’ve seen a big increase in counterfeit activity,”says Gabriella Forte, chief executive of Calvin Klein, “the better-known the brand name, the more people want to rip it off.”In the past Calvin Klein took a relatively passive approach to the counterfeit problem. The company has now got tougher by establishing a network of employees and external specialists to uncover copyright abuse. The move began with a general change in corporate strategy whereby Calvin Klein has aggressively expanded its interests outside North America. Calvin Klein has been one of the leading fashion designers in the North America market since the mid-1970s. Now Calvin Klein isbuilding up its fashion business in other countries. It has increased its investment in advertising, and restructured its licensing arrangements by signing long-term deals with partners for entire regions such as Europe or Asia, rather than giving licensing rights to individual countries. But as sales and brand awareness have risen, Calvin Klein has become an increasingly popular target for Asian and European counterfeiters, alongside other luxury brands such as Gucci, Chanel and Ralph Lauren. The fake goods, mostly T-shirts, jeans and baseball caps, not only reduce the company’s own sales but damage its brand image by linking it to poor quality merchandise. “You’d be amazed at how many people pay $5 for a T-shirt without realizing it’s counterfeit,” said one executive. ( ) 6.Which of the following statements is the correct understanding of the word “logo”?A. a name, a term or a symbol which is used to differentiate a product fromcompetitors’ products.B. the ability of a brand to make money.C. the symbol of a company or other organization.D. agreements which allow a company to make and sell a registered brand locally. ( ) 7.According to the passage, why the problem of CK’S being counterfeiting is getting worse?A. The company changed its way of dealing with counterfeiters.B. The brand name has become well-known.C. The price of the fake goods is much lower than that of the original ones.D. The brand name is easy to remember.( ) 8.What was Calvin Klein’s attitude to counterfeiting at present?A. He adopts a constructive and active approach.B. He is pessimistic and discouraged.C. He thinks fighting back doesn’t pay.D. After seeing how e-mails have come back to haunt so many executives in court, I'm wondering what should one avoid e-mailing?I just read about a big Hollywood star who decided that he was going to seek a divorce from his spouse of 22 years. He didn't sit down to talk to her about this. He didn't even give her a call. Nope, he e-mailed her about it.Unfortunately, he's not the only one who has broken his vows through e-mail. Many of us have e-mailed someone over something that was far too important, far too nuanced, far too personal toe-mail. Below is a list of times not to hit send. For more, check out The Boss's Survival Guide by Rosner, Halcrow and Levins (McGraw Hill, 2000).Don't e-mail big stuff. Don't e-mail an announcement about a merger, acquisition, reorganization or downsizing. If it's a big deal then you need to tell your people face-to-face. Reading a major announcement in an e-mail isn't as bad as reading it for the first time in the newspaper, but it's close.Don't e-mail policy changes that will generate questions. Changes in sick leave or vacation time policies or benefits coverage will generate questions. As a general rule, anything that hits someone's wallet should be explained face-to-face.Stop e-mails that become a tennis match. We've all known e-mail debates that have volleyed back and forth more times than a tennis ball at Wimbledon. If an e-mail goes back and forth more than three times — and especially if the distribution list gets bigger — that's a sure sign that the discussion is bigger than e-mail. Call a halt and bring people together to resolve the issue.Don't put anything confidential in e-mail. That includes: Salaries, comments about performance, etc.Don't put anything in e-mail that you don't want to see in the newspaper or hear in court. Now that organizations as diverse as Microsoft and the White House have found their internal e-mail printed in newspapers and read in court, you know that even "private" e-mail is not really private. Nor can it be easily deleted.Which leads to the big issue — are you hiding behind your e-mail? Some managers rely one-mail in lieu of face-to-face conversation. It's especially tempting when people are off-site; such as telecommuters, vendors, or independent contractors. E-mail is more easily misinterpreted because it doesn't allow for give-and-take discussion and people aren't guided by facial expressions and vocal intonations. And the more dependent you are on e-mail, the more mysterious you become. Even theWizard of Oz learned that being the man behind the curtain only gets you so far. Go down the hall, hang out in the lunchroom, or pick up the phone at least some of the time.Follow these tips and what you are trying to say won't get divorced from the way that you say it.1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true?A. Even "private" e-mail is not really private.B. E-mails are more easily misinterpreted.C. “Private” emails cannot be easily deleted.D. No “private” emails can be really del eted.2. The fact that organizations as diverse as Microsoft and the White House have found their internal e-mail printed in newspapers and read in court indicates that .A. people should not use emails in their work.B. even "private" e-mail is not really private.C. emails have brought people too much trouble and inconvenience.D. emails will lead to a lot of law suits.3. The expression “in lieu of” in the paragraph above the last means _______.A. instead ofB. in line withC. in spite ofD. prior to4. According to the passage, all the following should be explained face-to-face except _______.A. anything that hits someone's walletB. Changes in the time of conferencesC. changes in sick leaveD. changes in holiday time policies5. The best title for this passage would be_________________.A. The Importance of E-mail in BusinessB. The Popularity of E-mail in BusinessC. E-mail Always a Must in Business CommunicationD. E-mail Not Always the Best MessengerPassage TwoEconomic "globalization" is a historical process, the result of human innovation and technological progress. It refers to the increasing integration of economies around the world, particularly through trade and financial flows. The term sometimes also refers to the movement ofpeople (labor) and knowledge (technology) across international borders. There are also broader cultural, political and environmental dimensions of globalization that are not covered here.At its most basic, there is nothing mysterious about globalization. The term has come into common usage since the 1980s, reflecting technological advances that have made it easier and quicker to complete international transactions—both trade and financial flows. It refers to an extension beyond national borders of the same market forces that have operated for centuries at all levels of human economic activity—village markets, urban industries, or financial centers.Markets promote efficiency through competition and the division of labor—the specialization that allows people and economies to focus on what they do best. Global markets offer greater opportunity for people to tap into more and larger markets around the world. It means that they can have access to more capital flows, technology, cheaper imports, and larger export markets. But markets do not necessarily ensure that the benefits of increased efficiency are shared by all. Countries must be prepared to embrace the policies needed, and in the case of the poorest countries may need the support of the international community as they do so.()6. Globalization is .A. a novelty in recent years.B. mysterious as it hasn’t been well known by the majority of people.C. not new to peopleD. a historical event.()7. Globalization refers toA. the increasing integration of economies around the worldB. the movement of people (labor) and knowledge (technology) across international bordersC. an extension beyond national borders of the market forcesD. All of the above()8. When did th e term “globalization” first come into usage?A. since 1990sB. since the 1980sC. since 1970sD. since 2000s()9. What are the benefits of globalization?A. increased efficiency of the marketB. cheaper importsC. larger marketsD. all of the above()10. Which of the following is not true?A. All the countries will share the same benefits from globalization.B Globalization makes it easier and quicker to complete international transactions.C. Countries must take active measures to embrace globalization.D. The benefits of increased efficiency will not be shared by all the countries.III.Business Translation: 20%(商务翻译,20分)Section A短语翻译Section B句子翻译1.我们希望在平等互利的基础上与你方建立贸易关系。

Choos ing the wrong can didate may leave an orga ni sati on pay ing for years to come.Few companies will have escaped all of the following failures: people who panic at the first sight of stress; those with long impressive qualificati ons who seem in capable of lear ning; hypochondriacs whose absentee record becomes astonishing; and the unstable person later discovered to be a thief or worse.Less dramatic, but just as much a problem, is the pers on who simply does not come up to expectations, who does not quite deliver; who never becomes a high-flier or even a steady performer; the employee with a fine future behind them. The first point to bear in mind at the recruitment stage is that people don' change. Intelligence levels decline modestly, but change little over their working life. The same is true of abilities, such as lear ning Ian guages and han dli ng nu mbers. Most people like to think that personality can change, particularly the more negative features such as anxiety, low esteem, impulsiveness or a lack of emotional warmth. But data collected over 50 years gives a clear message: still stable after all these years. Extroverts become slightly less extroverted; the acutely shy appear a little less so, but the fun dame ntals rema in much the same. Personal crises can affect the way we cope with thin gs: we might take up or drop drink, drugs, religion or relaxation techniques, which can be have pretty dramatic effects. Skills can be improved, and new ones in troduced, but at rather differe nt rates. People can be groomed for a job. Just as politicia ns are carefully repackaged through dress, hairstyle and speech specialists, so people can be sent on training courses, diplomas or experime ntal weekends. But there is a cost to all this which may be more than the price of the course. Better to select for what you actually see rather tha n attempt to cha nge it.( )1. The purpose of this passage is to give man agers the advice that .A. Employers should select can didates for their pote ntial.B. Employers should select can didates for what they are rather tha n for their potential.C. Employers should select the newly graduated and send them on training courses, diplomas or experime ntal weeke nds.D. Employers should select experie need can didates to avoid spe nding thousa ndsof pounds in training.( )2. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true ? ____________ .A. Absolutely, People don 'tchange during their working lives.B. Gen erally, people cha nge to a large exte nt duri ng their worki ng lives.C. Fun dame ntally, people stay the same duri ng their work ing lives.D. Normally, people don 'tchange at all during their working lives.( )3. Some people don 'have any potential for their work though they are employed.C. Some people can have a bright future though they can 'do their work well.D. The word deliver (line 2 of paragraph 3) means ________________ .A. to take goods to the places or people they are addressed toB. to give a speechC. to do what you promised to doD. to help a woma n to give birth to a baby.Passage TwoAsia n econo mies will con ti nue to expa nd rapidly in the n ext two years on the back offoreig n in vestme nts, exports and domestic dema nd, but will not be free of worries, accord ing to a recent securities compa ny econo mic report. Kim Moloney, a client services executive, can’t say enough nice things about her employer. ‘It’s a very special environment,’she says. ‘People describe Xerox as a family and I was amazed at the number of people who have worked here for so long.’ It’s tempting to take Moloney’s comments with a pinch of salt, especially considering that when you’ve been working somewhere for only two years, as she has at Xerox, everyone seems old and established. But there’s truth behind her enthusiasm.Take Carole Palmer, the group resources director. She joined Xerox in 1978 as a temp and has been in her present role for seven years. ‘Xerox has been good to me over the years,’ she says. ‘It has supported me through qualifications …and last year I took part in the vice-president incumbent program.’ Human resources is taken seriously at Xerox, Palmer says, and the company has a policy of promoting from within (which would explain Moloney’s amazement at her colleagues’longevity). The company takes on only fifteen to twenty graduates each year and Moloney was part of an intake who joined having already acquired a couple of years’work experience. She started as a project manager for Xerox Global Services before moving into sales. Now her responsibility is to ‘grow and maintain customer relationships’.Moloney is based at the head office in Uxbridge. ‘It’s great in terms of working environment,’she says. ‘We’ve just got a new provider in the canteen and …we have brainstorming rooms and breakout areas.’Much of Moloney’s role is visiting clients, so she doesn’t have a permanent desk at head office. ‘I’m a hot-desker, which is good because you get to sit with different people in the hot-desk areas. And you’re given a place to store your things.’ Head office staff numbers between 1,200 and 1,500 people, Palmer says. The company has four other main offices in the UK. The nature of the organization, which encompasses sales and marketing, global services (the biggest division), developing markets, research and development and manufacturing, means that the opportunities at the company vary from service engineers to sales roles and consultants.Perks include a final-salary pension scheme and various discount schemes. The reward and recognition scheme is a little different, and rather nice: ‘Each manager has a budget every year to recognize and reward staff,’ Palmer says. ‘It can be in the form of a meal for two, or a bottle of wine. It can be up to £1,000. There’s the recognition, and then there’s putting money behind it.’Moloney, however, likes the non-cash rewards. ‘Xerox takes care of all its staff but it alsorecognizes the people who put in the added effort,’ she says. ‘It offers once-in-a-lifetime incentive trips, and recently I organized a sailing trip for my team.’The idea of working abroad with the company appeals to her, and she says that her career goal is to be part of the senior management team. While these quirks may not necessarily get you fired, they certainly can keep you from climbing the corporate ladder. We’ve uncovered a number of habits that bug your boss and offer tips on how to avoid them.According to LaRhonda Edwards, a human resources manager with thirteen years of HR experience, tardiness is one of the biggest concerns for managers. “If the normal work day starts at8 o’clock, then the expectation is that you’re in the office ready to start your day,” she explains.H er advice to the chronically late? “Plan ahead,” she urges. “If you live 50 minutes away, youdon’t leave 50 minutes early. Tag on extra time and anticipate road blocks.” Some people even set their clocks a few minutes early to ensure that they’re on time. Different bosses prefer different modes of communication. Lindsey Pollak, a workplace expert and author of Getting from College to Career, says if you text your boss and she prefers in-person meetings, “either your information won’t get across or you’ll irritate [her].” Fortunately, there’s a simple fix: ask your boss how and when to send updates. If you’re too shy to ask outright, then Pollak suggests observing how they communicate with you. “If you have a boss who communicates once a day by email, that’s the boss’ preferred frequency and method of communication,” explains Pollak.A cluttered, messy work space can give your boss the impression that you’re lazy or disorganized, so try to keep your desk neat. “Never put more on your desk than you’re going t o work on for the day,” recommends Edwards. “At the end of the day, make sure you set up for the next day. I may be working on five things at once, but at the end of the day, they’re gone, and I set up for the next day.” Most managers would rather you ask a question than make a mistake, but many questions can be answered on your own. “Is this something you could Google or ask a colleague?” wonders Pollak. “The internet is so vast that a lot of information you can get yourself.” If you must approach your bos s with a question or issue, then Pollak recommends brainstorming beforehand. “Rather than saying ‘This client is terrible. What should I do?’ think about potential solutions,” she says.Cell phones are practically ubiquitous in the workplace these days, bu t it’s still disruptive and disrespectful when they go off during a meeting. Edwards says that you should, “put your cell phone on vibrate or leave it in your own office so it’s not a distraction.” That way you won’t be tempted to text either!()6.According to the article, how many pieces of advice are offered here? .A.
