Summary：In the Victorian period, a rural clergyman in England tells Durbeyfield, a simple farmer, that he is descended from the illustrious d'Urberville family, now extinct; or maybe not. Durbeyfield sends his daughter Tess to check on a family named d'Urberville living in a manor house less than a day's carriage ride away. Alec d'Urberville is delighted to meet his beautiful cousin, and he seduces her with strawberries and roses. But Alec is no relation to Tess; he has gotten his illustrious name and coat of arms by purchasing them. Alec falls in love with Tess, seduces/rapes her, and she leaves, pregnant; back at home, the baby dies. Some time later, Tess begins work as a milkmaid, and there she meets her true love Angel Clare. Angel believes her completely innocent. They fall in love, but Angel does not learn of her previous relationship with Alec until their wedding night, and rejects her. Deserted by her husband, Tess meets Alec again, and poverty forces her to resume their relationship. Angel returns from travelling abroad, remorseful at his treatment of Tess, but finds her with Alec. Tess murders Alec in order to run away with Angel. Under the Greenwood Tree(1872),Tess Of D’urbervilles(1891) and Jude de Obscure(1896).On January 11,1928,this last important novelist of the 19th century died.Well,today I’m going to focus on Tess Of D’urbervilles and make some simple comments on it To summarise the content,Tess is a beautiful ,innocent peasant girl.The poverty of the family forces her to merry to the D’urbervilles.Alec,the young master of the D’urbervilles,a dandy ,seduces Tess and impregnates her.Then people’s prejudice forces Tess to leave home to work on a dairy farm.There she meets Angel Clare.Then two fall in love with each other.On their wedding night ,Tess reveals her own tragic past,but Angel wouldn’t forgive her and abandoned her that very night.Helpless and hopeless,Tess has to wander from place to place,doing the hardest work and bearing the intolerable sinsult.After her father’s death,Tess undertakes the whole burden of the family.Then she has nothing to do but goes back to Alec,now a preacher. Unexpectedly, before long,Angel returns from abroad out of his repentance and guilty to Tess.Then,the poor couple reunions and Tess ,puts all the blame of her unhappiness on Alec,kills him.She flees with Angel,but finally,anfter becoming five days escapee,Tess is caught by the police and hanged to the public.Tess, a woman who committed astounded crime and was disdained by the public,was described as “A pure woman”by the writer in the sub-title of this novel.As far as I’m concerned,it’s an irony to those hypocrites,just like Alec, in Hardy’s period.No one can deny that Tess is one of Hardy’s masterpieces.The story reflect the sharp and fierce conflicts between the bourgeois society and peasantry towards the end of 19th century.Though, it was quite far from our China’s current situation.As far as I’m concerned,it still have some significant meanings to our nation,which is involved in the transformation of the society.Here,I don’t intend to analyse Alec and Angel.The former is obvious ,the later is complex.In terms of Tess,she is a pure and a littlte bit ignorant woman who was brought up even dominated with the traditional womanly moral values.Of course,Tess has some virtues, for instance, perseverance, dedication ,self-esteem and thrift.What’s more, she dares to rebellion the restriction to pursue the true love worth being praised.But her efforts are all in vain,to some extent,it’s inevitable.Living at the turn of the century,Hardy witnessed numerous injustice even cruel incidents due to the conflict I mentioned above.On the one hand,Hardy showed great sympathy for those victims,On the other hand,He was effortless in helping them.It’s evident that,his attitude towards life had negative impact on Hardy’s works.He believed that a man’s fate was predeterminatedly tragic,driven by a combined force of “nature”,both character and society.Let’s back to the Tess .Why Tess is so memorable.I think,It was Tess tragic destiny, namely, family society even religion that devasasted her.I’m sure,It was a common phenomena in Victorian period.Anyway,Thomas Hardy was the milestone of of the Victorian period in UK.Though Tess is a tragedy.The author still provide positive hope for reader.At the end,Angelmerries Tess’s sister-Lisa.That can be regarded as the symbol as the continuity of Tess’s affection for Angel.。

He delineated a lot of characters of tragedies, showing various persons’ enchantment. Hardy succeeded in portraying the image of heroine Tess and revealing the hypocritical ethics and morals of bourgeois society. This novel describes a tragic life about one beautiful and pure girl after disgrace. The article describes the society environment, then begins to analysis of characters’ personality and religion factors open out at that time. Tess’s tragic life is caused by that society and it’s the result of that time. Except this, it can’t be separated from her own weakness in character, because she obviously has the dual nature of the society character---resistance and compromise. Why Alec can be so aggressive consists inhis wealth and the connive of the cabalism system.The society and law all hold the views that Alec is innocent, Tess guilty. The injustice proves the ruthless and hypocrisy of the capitalism laws.C.The spiritual ravagement to Tess fromtraditional ethics becomes another main cause of the tragedy. After being humiliated by Alec,Tess has to bear the worldly- opinion and traditionalmorality .She is so brave that she chooses toendure.However,her husband ,Angel Clare, knowsthis ,and discards her because he thought she is notvirgin. Clare pushes Tess to the edge of the danger,taking the only hope from the poor woman. Thisforced her back to Alec .Finally she kills Alec.Heronly revolt is the powerful illustration of all thetorment and mortification she has suffered. Herdeath is the focus and epitome of the dark society. ConclusionTess is a tragic character, and a victim of the society with darkness. Her tragedy results from not only the society, but her own flaccid character. What kind of this love is? What make the love destroy its lover? Tess could be a happy girl though her family was very poor. But noble, status, and money were bly in her father’s mind, just because of the discovery that a parson said to him. Without their hors e’s carrying load, life became rather difficult. Tess blamed herself completely, and she wondered what she could help her parents. Then Tess obeyed her mother’s idea, to work at the d’Urberville’s home, and met her cousin, Alec d’Urbervilles. This then was the beginning. T ess had to meet the wrong man, and one who was so bly attracted to her. Yet to the right man, she was only a half-forgotten impression from an evening’s dancing party in a country field. This mistake was to have tragic results. Alec used his clever brain to help Tess’s parents, and this made Tess feel grateful to him. Because of her slackening vigilance, Alec’s intention came true ---Tess would be maiden no more.As the people of her village said, It was to be. And from now on, Tess’s life was to be completely different. Tess left Alec’s home, returned her village. But all had changed, Tess wouldn’t be happy, people in village wouldn’t see her as before. After her baby’s death, she had to leave her home, went to a far place. Perhaps at that time we should thank Alec, thank baby’s death, or Tess wouldn’t leave her home and met Angel Clare, her right man in the dairy. Tess was a so lovely girl that Angel was soon crazy for her. At last, they conquered many difficulties and gotmarried. But Tess’s experience was still her mortal wound, Angel couldn’t accept the truth and left her. The story came to its turning point again. When Angel realized his mistake and went back to look for Tess, all was too late, the poor girl again dropped into Alec’s tra p. With the intertwine of love and hatred, Tess had to end herself with a tragic results. God played with Tess so much. When her right man appeared, God yet didn’t give her happiness. Tess’s parents loved her, but it was just an instinctive love; Alec said love to her, but it was a evil love; Angel said love to her as well, but it was a immature and selfish love. He wanted Tess to forgive him, but he couldn’t forgive Tess. Tess didn’t make any mistakes, but at last, she born all punishments and sufferings. At first, God had let the two persons miss each other.A tragedy was doomed. But perhaps no love, no hatred, no dignity, death was the best way for Tess to extricate herself. We have nothing to do but watching world changing, destroying Tess, then continuing changing. The tragedy recurs every day in fact. I can’t help asking, have we missed our happiness?。

Summary：
In the Victorian period, a rural clergyman in England tells Durbeyfield, a simple farmer, that he is descended from the illustrious d'Urberville family, now extinct; or maybe not. Durbeyfield sends his daughter Tess to check on a family named d'Urberville living in a manor house less than a day's carriage ride away. Alec d'Urberville is delighted to meet his beautiful cousin, and he seduces her with strawberries and roses. But Alec is no relation to Tess; he has gotten his illustrious name and coat of arms by purchasing them. Alec falls in love with Tess, seduces/rapes her, and she leaves, pregnant; back at home, the baby dies. Some time later, Tess begins work as a milkmaid, and there she meets her true love Angel Clare. Angel believes her completely innocent. They fall in love, but Angel does not learn of her previous relationship with Alec until their wedding night, and rejects her. Deserted by her husband, Tess meets Alec again, and poverty forces her to resume their relationship. Angel returns from travelling abroad, remorseful at his treatment of Tess, but finds her with Alec. Tess murders Alec in order to run away with Angel. They spend one night of happiness together, before she is arrested.。
