Topic: Structure and writing tone of an application letter

Teaching Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

1)obtain the structure, writing tone of an application letter through analyzing a writing sample;

2)learn to ask questions to explore information and make contents reasonable.

Teaching Procedures

Step1 Introduction

Make a brief introduction to application letter.

Step2 Analysis of a sample writing

1.Analyze the requirements of the writing task.

（2019新课标全国Ⅰ）假定你是李华，暑假在伦敦学习，得知当地美术馆要举办中国画展览。请写一封信申请做志愿者，内容包括：

①写信目的；

②个人优势；

③能做的事情。

注意：①词数100左右；

②可以适当增加细节，以使行文连贯；

③结束语已为你写好。

2.Explain the structure of an application letter.

Paragraph1:自我介绍，写信背景，写信目的

Paragraph2:表示自己能够胜任并具体说明理由

Paragraph3:希望给予机会，期待尽快回复

3.Process writing

Write this letter paragraph by paragraph in a formal and polite way, and try to make the contents logical and reasonable.

Paragraph1: (自我介绍,写信背景,写信目的)

（1）自我介绍：我是李华,暑假在伦敦学习。

I am Li Hua, a student studying in London.

（2）写信背景：得知当地美术馆要举办中国画展览。

I learned that there will be a Chinese painting exhibition in your art gallery.

（3）写信目的：我写信申请做志愿者

I am writing to apply for being a volunteer.

Join sentence2 and sentence3 together. Thus, paragraph1 can be written in the following way:

I am Li Hua, a student studying in London. Learning that there will be a Chinese painting exhibition in your art gallery, I am writing to apply for being a volunteer.

Paragraph2: (表示自己能够胜任,并具体说明理由)

（1）A topic sentence is needed at the beginning of this paragraph.

I deem that I am well qualified for the position.

（2）Detailed reasons

In order to make the contents in paragraph2 logical and reasonable, we can ask ourselves some questions, for example:

Q: What kind of qualities are needed for a volunteer at the Chinese Painting Exhibition in London? A: speak fluent English, know a lot about Chinese paintings ...

I deem that I am quite equal to the position. Firstly, being exposed to English since a young age enables me to communicate fluently with others. Additionally, I am keen on Chinese paintings. Thus, I can make full use of my related knowledge to help the visitors learn more about the unique Chinese art form.

Paragraph3: (希望给予机会,期待尽快回复)be polite

（1）如果能获得您的认可，我将不胜感激。

I would extremely appreciate it if I have a chance to receive your approval.

（2）期待您的尽早回复。
