Besides, the Chinese government has announced new policies to help students- turned village officials develop their career, in an effort to sustain the program that recruits college graduates to work in rural areas. This has aroused a heated debate as to whether college graduates should work in rural areas. When it comes to this problem, different people havedifferent opinions. As far as I am concerned, it is a good thing tosend college students to work in rural areas. The reasons are as follows. In the first place, it can ease employment pressures because China now is facing a severe employment crisis. What’s more, it can enhance the development of rural areas. Last but not least, it can cultivate undergraduate students’ spirit of work hard and perseverance, especially those from urban areas. From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that sending college students to work in rural areas is beneficial to both the country and individuals. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there arefour choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. Some of the world's most significant problems hit headlines. One example comes from agriculture. Food riots and hunger make news. But the trend lying behind these matters is rarely talked about. This is the decline in the growth in yields of some of the world's major crops. Anew study by the University of Minnesota and MeGill University in Montreal looks at where, and how far, this decline is occurring. The authors take a vast number of data points for the four most important crops: rice, wheat, corn and soybeans(大豆).They find that on between 24% and 39% of all harvested areas, the improvement in yields that took place before the 1980s slowed down in the 1990s and2000s.There are two worrying features of the slowdown. One is that it has been particularly sharp in the world's most populous(人口多的)countries,India and China. Their ability to feed themselves has been an important source of relative stability both within the countries and on world food markets. That self-sufficiency cannot be taken for granted if yields continue to slowdown or reverse.Second, yield growth has been lower in wheat and rice than in cornand soybeans. This is problematic because wheat and rice are more important as foods, accounting for around half of all calories consumed. Corn and soybeans are more important as feed grains. The authors note that "we have preferentially focused our crop improvement efforts on feeding animals and cars rather than on crops that feed people and are the basis of food security in much of the world."The report qualifies the more optimistic findings of another new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people in2050, as the Food and Agriculture Organization has argued.Instead, it says, thanks to slowing population growth, land currently ploughed up for crops might be able to revert(回返)to forest or wildemess. This could happen. The trouble is that the forecast assumes continued improvements in yields, which may not actually happen.31. What does the author try to draw attention to?A) Food riots and hunger in the world.B) The decline of the grain yield growth.C) News headlines in the leading media.D) The food supply in populous countries.32.Why does the author mention India and China in particular?A) Their self-sufficiency is vital to the stability of world food markets.B) Their food yields have begun to decrease sharply in recent years.C) Their big populations are causing world wide concerns.D) Their food self-sufficiency has been taken for granted.33.What does the new study by the two universities say about recent crop improvement efforts?A) They fail to produce the same remarkable results as before the 1980s.B) They contribute a lot to the improvement of human food production.C) They play a major role in guaranteeing the food security of the world.D) They focus more on the increase of animal feed than human food grains.34.What does the Food and Agriculture Organization say about world food production in the coming decades?A) The growing population will greatly increase the pressure on world food supplies.B) The optimistic prediction about food production should be viewed with caution.C) The slowdown of the growth in yields of major food crops will be reversed.D) The world will be able to feed its population without increasing farmland.35. How does the author view the argument of the Food and Agriculture Organization?A) It is built on the findings of a new study.B) It is based on a doubtful assumption.C) It is backed by strong evidence.D) It is open to further discussion.Passage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Across the rich world, well-educated people increasingly work longer than the less-skilled.Some 65% of American men aged 62-74 with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with 32% of men with only a high-school certificate. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the well-educated well-off and the unskilled poor. Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individuals and society, are profound. The world is facing an astonishing rise in the number of old people. And they will live longer than ever before. Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity(长寿)translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems. But the notion of a sharp division between the working young andthe idle old misses a new trend, the growing gap between the skilled and the unskilled. Employment rates are falling among younger unskilled people, whereas older skilled folk are working longer. The divide is most extreme in America, where well-educated baby-boomers are putting off retirement while many less-skilled younger people have dropped out of the workforce.Policy is partly responsible. Many European governments have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early.Rising life expectancy(预期寿命),combined with there placement of generous defined-benefit pension plans with less generous defined-contribution ones, means that even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role. Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to reap rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the preceding generation. Technological change may well reinforce that shift: the skills that complement computers, from management know how to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.36. What is happening in the workforce in rich countries?A) Younger people are replacing the elderly.B) Well-educated people tend to work longer.C) Unemployment rates are rising year after year.D) People with no college degree do not easily find work.37. What has helped deepen the divide between the well-off and the poor?A) Longer life expectancies.B) A rapid technological advance.C) Profound changes in the workforce.D) A growing number of the well-educated.38. What do many observers predict in vie w of the experience of the 20th century?A) Economic growth will slow down.B) Government budgets will increase.C) More people will try to pursue higher education.D) There will be more competition in the job market.39. What is the result of policy changes in European countries?A) Unskilled workers may choose to retire early.B) More people have to receive in-service training.C) Even wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.D) People may be able to enjoy generous defined-benefits from pension plans.40. What is characteristic of work in the 21st century?A) Computers will do more complicated work.B) More will be taken by the educated young.C)Most jobs to be done will be creative ones.D) Skills are highly valued regardless of age.Passage ThreeQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage.Human wants seem endless. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat, when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure boats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the"life-enriching" level. While other levels involve physical satisfaction——the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body——this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of whichcould be called "luxury" items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and entertainment. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. On the fourth level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases,or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action.Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.41. According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when .A) he has saved up enough moneyB) he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelterC) He has satisfied his hungerD) He has learned to build houses42. It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of the World War II most Americans .A) were very richB) lived in povertyC) had the good things on the first three levelsD) did not own automobiles43.All of the following EXCEPT are related to "physical satisfactions".A) a successful careerB) a cozy homeD) a family carC) a new house44. All of the following EXCEPT belong to the wants on the fourth level.A) going for holiday tripsB) finding a shelterC) going to a cinemaD) the best medical care45. The author tends to think that a fifth level .A) would be little better than the fourth levelB) may be a lot more desirable than the first fourC) can be the last and most satisfying levelD) will become attainable if the government takes actionsPassage FourQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.Technology can make us smarter or stupider, and we need to develop a set of principles to guide our everyday behavior and make sure that tech is improving and not hindering our mental processes. One of the big questions being debated today is: What kind of information do we need to have stored in our heads, and what kind can we leave "in the cloud," to be accessed as necessary? An increasingly powerful group within education are championing "digital literacy". In their view, skills beat, knowledge, developing "digital literacy" is more important than learning mere content, and all facts are now Google-able and therefore unworthy of committing to memory. But even the most sophisticated digital literacy skills won't help students and workers navigate the world if they don't have a broad base of knowledge about how the world actually operates. If you focus on the delivery mechanism and not the content, you're doing kids a disservice.Indeed, evidence from cognitive science challenges the notion that skills can exist independent of factual knowledge. Data from the last thirty years leads to a conclusion that is not scientifically challengeable: thinking well requires knowing facts, and that's true not only because you need something to think about. The very processes that teachers care about most-—critical thinking processes—are intimately intertwined (交织) with factual knowledge that is stored in long-termmemory.In order words, just because you can Google the date of Black Tuesday doesn't mean you understand why the Great Depression happened or how it compares to our recent economic slump. There is no doubt that the students of today, and the workers of tomorrow, will need to innovate, collaborate and evaluate. But such skills can't be separated from the knowledge that gives rise to them. To innovate, you have to know what, came before. To collaborate, you have to contribute knowledge to the joint venture. And to evaluate, you have to compare new information against knowledge you've already mastered. So here's a principle for thinking in a digital world, in two parts. First, acquire a base of factual knowledge in any domain in which you want to perform well. This base supplies the essential foundation for building skills, and it can't be outsourced(外包) to a search engine.Second, take advantage of computers' invariable memory, but also the brain's elaborative memory. Computers are great when you want to store information that shouldn't change. But brains are the superior choice when you want information to change, in interesting and useful ways: to connect up with other facts and ideas, to acquire successive layers of meaning, to steep for a while in your accumulated knowledge and experience and so produce a richer mental brew.46. What is the author's concern about the use of technology?A) It may leave knowledge "in the cloud".B) It may misguide our everyday behavior.C) It may cause a divide in the circles of education.D) It may hinder the development of thinking skills.47. What is the vie w of educators who advocate digital literacy?A) It helps kids to navigate the virtual world at will.B) It helps kids to broaden their scope of knowledge.C) It increase kids' efficiency of acquiring knowledge.D) It liberates kids from the burden of memorizing facts.48. What does evidence from cognitive science show?A) Knowledge is better kept in long-term memory.B) Critical thinking is based on factual knowledge.C) Study skills are essential to knowledge acquisition.D) Critical thinking means challenging existing facts.49. What does the author think is key to making evaluations?A) Gathering enough evidence before drawing conclusions.B) Mastering the basic rules and principles for evaluation.C) Connecting new information with one's accumulated knowledge.D) Understanding both what has happened and why it has happened.50. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A) To warn against learning through memorizing facts.B) To promote educational reform in the information age.C) To explain human brains' function in storing information.D) To challenge the prevailing overemphasis on digital literacy.Part IV Writing (15 points)For this part, you are supposed to write an essay commenting on the argument "It is useless to learn English as a second foreign language since I major in Japanese." Functional and often unexciting, replaced by zip fasteners or hood and eyes, there is, one would think, nothing much to be said about the humble button.Yet it is very probable that buttons started life as ornaments; certainly it is not known that they had any practical function until the 13th century. By the 14th century buttons were once again ornamental, often wastefully so, to such an extent that it was by no means uncommon for a person of wealth and consequence to have as many as 300 buttons on a single article of dress. Unimaginable as it seems today, sewing superfluous buttons on cloths became a craze---- not one that seems harmful to us though some Italians took a different view and a law against buttons was enforced in Florence. No buttons were to be worn on the upper arms; penalty for disobedience---- a sound whipping. How often this had to be carried out, history does not relate! Most of the buttons on modern clothes which could be called decorative once did in fact serve a useful purpose. Buttons on boots are one good example. Sleeve buttons on men‟s coats are a reminder of the days when the fashion was for wearing shirts with frilly lace cuffs. On the tails of a modern tail coat there are indeed buttons which are purely ornamental but in earlier dayshorsemen used these buttons to keep the tails out of harm‟s way. With regard to the side on which clothes are buttoned, originally both male and female dress was buttoned on the left hand side. Change came when men had to have access to their swords. So perhaps it is worth taking a look at buttons.51. Which of the following statements is true regarding buttons?A They have little function.B They are the only useful accessory.C They receive the least attention among accessories.D They are one of the best adornments to any clothes.52. According to the author, ____A buttons are used as ornaments only in modern times.B buttons have been used as ornaments since the 14th century.C buttons were used as ornaments before the 13th century.D buttons have been used as ornaments on and off throughout the history.53. It is implied that in the 14th century buttons ________A were a symbol of wealth.B were occasionally put on clothes.C began to have practical functions.D represented the wearer‟s artistic taste54. In Florence, a city in Italy, buttons were once ___A loved by every citizen .B banned because they were a craze.C considered harmful and nobody wore them.D forbidden on the upper arms.55. It seems to the author that buttons ____A are worth a second look.B have never served any functionC should not be sewed on coats.D play an important role in our lives.56. Male and female dress is now buttoned __________A on the right sideB on the left sideC on different sides C on the same sides.Passage TwoBehind most of the bad things we do to our bodies as adults, eating more than we should is the idea we carry with us from childhood. On the one hand, we assume that we are indestructible. On the other, we think that any damage we impose on ourselves can be undone when finally clean up our act.If the evidence for how wrong the first idea is isn‟t apparent when you stand naked in front of the mirror, just wait. But what if you eat right and drop all your bad habits? Is there still time to repair the damage? To a surprising degree, the answer is yes. Over the past five years, scientists have accumulated a wealth of data about what happens when aging people with bad habits decide to turn their lives around. The heartening conclusion: the body has an amazing ability to heal itself, provided the damage is not too great. The effects of some bad habits ---smoking, in particular---can haunt you for decades. But the damage from other habits can be largely healed.“Any time you improve your behaviour and make lifestyle changes, they make a difference from that point on,” says Dr. Jeffrey Koplan. “Maybe not right away. It‟s like slamming on the brakes. You do need a certain distance. “But the distance can be remarkably short. Consider the recent announcements from the front lines of medical research:---- A study concluded that women who consume a s little as two servings of fish a week cut their risk of suffering a stroke to half that women who eat less than one serving of fish a month.---- The day you quit smoking, the carbon monoxide levels in your body drop dramatically. Within weeks, your blood becomes less sticky and your risk of dying from a heart attack starts to decline.Adopting healthy habits won‟t cure all that bothers you, of course. But doctors believe that many chronic diseases ----from high blood pressure to heart disease and even some cancers---- can be warded off with a few sensible changes in lifestyle.N ot sure where to start? Surprisingly, it doesn‟t matter, since one positive change usually leads to another. Make e nough changes, and you‟ll discover you‟ve adopted a new way of life.57. Most people with bad habits of eating more than they should believe that ____A they can never change the habits that have haunted them for decades.B their bodies can‟t be damage d by the bad habits.C their bodies can heal all the damage without the help from outside.D they can force themselves to clean up the bad habits later.58. The evidence to disapprove the assumption that we are indestructible ____A is seldom apparent .B is clearly shown in the mirror.C will appear obvious sooner or later.D is still a question.59. According to the passage the human body can heal the damage caused by bad habits _______A when the damage is not very serious.B no matter how serious the damage is.C after we have dropped our bad habits.D much more slowly than we think.60. According to the recent announcements, ____A women should eat as much fish as possible.B women are at a higher risk of suffering a stroke than men.C eating a little more f ish can improve women‟s health.D men don‟t have to eat as much fish as women.61. It is implied in the passage that _____A smokers have lower levels of carbon monoxide than non-smokers.B the blood of smokers is more sticky than that of non-smokers.C smokers will be unlikely to die from heart attack if they quit smoking.D chronic diseases can be cured if we drop our habit of smoking.62. In the last paragraph the author tells us _____A when we should start quitting our bad habits.B it doesn‟t matter how we start quitting our bad habits.C that making enough changes will make doctors unnecessary to us.D it‟s never too late to start making sensible changes in our lifestyle.Passage ThreeOur true challenge today is not debts and deficits or global competition but the need to find a way to live rich, fulfilling lives without destroying the planet‟s biosphere, which supports all life. Humanity has never before faced such a threat: the collapse of the very elements that keep us alive. An apple is an easy thing to take for granted. If you live where apples grow in abundance, you might assume that they are readily available and, better yet, that you may pick from a wide variety. But do you know that there are far fewer types to choose from today than there were 100 years ago?Between the years 1804 and 1905, there were 7,098 varieties of apples grown in the United States. Today 6,121 of those are extinct. But does diversity really matter? In the 1840‟s, Ireland‟s population exceeded eight million, making it the most densely populated country in Europe. Potatoes were its dietary mainstay, and a single variety called lumpers was the most widely grown. In 1845 the farmers planted their lumpers as usual, but a plant disease known as blight struck and wiped out almost the entire crop. “Most of Ireland survived that difficult year,” wrote Paul Raeburn in his book The Last Harvest ----The Genetic Gamble That Threatens to Destroy American Agriculture. “The deva station came the next year. Farmers has no choice but to plant the same potatoes again. They had no other varieties. The blight struck again, this time with overwhelming force. The suffering was indescribable.” Historians estimate that up to 1 million people died of starvation, while another 1.5 million emigrated, most to the United States. Those remaining suffered from crushing poverty. In the Andes of South America, farmers grew many varieties of potatoes, and only a few were affected by blight. Hence, there was no epidemic. Clearly, diversity of species and diversity within species provide protection. The growing of just one uniform crop runs counter to this basic survival strategy and leaves plants exposed to diseaseor pests, which can destroy an ent ire regions‟ harvest. That is why many farmers depend so heavily on the frequent use of pesticides , even though such chemicals are often environmentally hazardous. Why do farmers replace their many folk varieties with one uniform crop? Usually in response to economic pressures. Planting uniform crops promises ease of harvesting, attractiveness of the product, resistance to go bad, and high productivity. But theses trends may be destroying man‟s own food supply.63. The main idea of the passage is __________A It is important to protect the earth‟s bio-diversity.B man is destroying his own food supply.C we now have fewer bio-species than before.D numerous strains of plants can resist plagues.64. With regard to the variety of apples in the United States ___________A it is the fewest in variety in terms of plant family.B over 80% of its varieties have been destroyed.C we have done our best to protect it.D it is as wide as it was 100 years ago.65. The author tells the st ory in Ireland in the 1840‟s to show that _________A farmers should grow as many varieties of potatoes as in South America.B potatoes should not be grown as a dietary mainstay.C lumpers were not a choice variety of potatoes.D bio-diversity is essential to life on earth.66. The uniform crop of lumpers in Ireland in the 1840‟s__________A caused blight to strike Ireland repeatedly.B caused Ireland‟s population to decline by half.C destroyed the whole Irish agricultural tradition.D s eriously devastated Ireland‟s economy.67. Diversity of species and diversity within species can help plants_________A ward off some disastrous diseases and pests.B resist natural disasters such as droughts.C withstand the harmful effect of pesticides.D yield bumper harvests.68. Which of the following is NOT the reason that farmers replace their folk varieties with one uniform crop?A They want to make more money.B They want to have a higher output.C They want to prevent the destruction of human food.D They want to make their products more attractive. Passage FourIt is a well-documented fact that women still live longer than men. A 1998 study by Harvard Medical School geriatrician Thomas Perls offers two reasons: one is the evolutionary drive to pass on her genes; the other is the need to stay healthy enough to rear as many children as possible. A man‟s purpose is simply to carry genes that ensure longevity and pass them on to his children.Okay, so that‟s the legacy of our cave-dweller past. But what is it about a man‟s lifestyle that reduces his longevity? As action moviemakers know all too well , men are supercharged with testosterone. Aside from forcing us to watch frenzied movies like The Matrix Reloaded, the testes-produced hormone also triggers riskier behavior and aggression, and increases levels of harmful cholesterol, raising the risk of heart disease of stroke. Meanwhile, the female hormone chops harmful cholesterol and raises “good” cholesterol. As Perls‟s study points out: “Between ages 15 and 24, men are four to five times more likely to die than women. This time frame coincides with the onset of puberty and an increase in reckless and violent behavior in males. Researchers refer to it as a …testosterone storm.‟ Most deaths in this male group come from motor vehicle accidents, followed by homicide, suicide….and drownings.”While all this jumping from tall buildings may result in some accidental death, it still doesn‟t account for the onset of fatal illnesses at an earlier age. Statistically, men are crippled more quickly by illnesses like heart disease, stroke and cancer. A Singapore study found that while men were diagnosed with chronic illness two years earlier than women, women were also disabled by their illnesses four years later. Men more often engage in riskier habits like drinking alcohol and using recreational drugs, as well as eating to excess. And the stereotype about men being adverse to seeing a doctor on a regular basis? Studies have shown its‟ true.If your goal is to become the first 100-year-old man on your family tree, there are some things you can do to boost your odds. One is to examine what centenarians are doing right. According to the ongoing New EnglandCentenarian Study, the largest comprehensive study of centenarians in the world, they can fend off or even escape age-associated diseases like heart attack, stroke, canc er, diabetes and Alzheimer‟s. Ninety percent of those studied were functionally independent for the vast majority of their lives up until the age of 92 , and 75% were just as autonomous at an average age of 95. “Centenarians disprove the perception that …the older you get, the sicker you get.‟ Centenarians teach us that the older you get, the healthier you‟ve been.”69. This passage mainly discusses ________A why women lead a healthier life than men.B how women can live longer and stay healthy.C what keeps men from enjoying a longer life span.D whether men‟s life style lead s to their early death.70. According to Thomas Perls, which of the following is a major factor contributing to the relative longevity of women over men?A Their natural urge to remain healthy.B Their greater natural drive to pass on genes.C Their need to bear healthy offspring.D Their desire to have more children.71. The author mentions “the legacy of our cave-dweller past” to __________A support the argument about women‟s role in rearing children.B summarize a possible cause of different life expectancies.C challenge the th eory about our ancestor‟s behaviour patterns.D illustrate the history of human evolution process.72. According to the passage, testosterone is a hormone that _______A increases as men grow older.B reduces risk factors in male behaviour.C lead s to aggressive behaviour and heart disease.D accounts for women‟s dislike for violent films.73. Compared with women, men as a whole ____.A suffer from depression more often.B suffer from diseases later than women.C are reluctant to have physical checkups.D are not affected by violent movies.74. Centenarians refer to people who ____A live longer than females.B live at the turn of the century.C are extremely independent.D are a hundred years or older.Passage FiveLast year, Curt Dunnam bought a Chevrolet Blazer with one of the most popular new features in high-end cars: the Onstar personal security system. The heavily advertised communications and tracking feature is used nationwide by more than two million drivers, who simply push a button to connect, via a built-in cell-phone, to a member of the Onstar staff. A Global Positioning System, or G.P.S., helps the employee give verbal directions to the driver or locate the car after an accident. The company can even send a signal to unlock car doors for locked-out owners, or honk the horn to help people find their cars in an endless plain of parking spaces. The biggest selling point for the system is its use in frustrating car thieves. Once an owner reports to the police that a car has been stolen, the company can track it to help arrest the thieves, a service it performs about 400 times each month. But for Mr. Dunnam, the more he learned about his car‟s security features, the less secure he felt. He has enough technical knowledge to worry that someone else---- law enforcement officers, or hackers----could listen in one his phone calls, or gain control over his automotive systems without his knowledge or consent. “While I don‟t believe G.M. intentionally designed this syst em to facilitate such activities, they sure have made it easy,” he said. Mr. Dunnam said he had become even more concerned because of a federal appeals court case involving a criminal investigation, in which federal authorities had demanded that a company attach a wiretap to tracking services like those installed in his car. The suit did not reveal which company was involved. A three-judge panel in San Francisco rejected the request, but not on privacy grounds; the panel said the wiretap would interfere with the operation of the safety services. Onstar has said that its equipment was not involved in that case. An Onstar spokeswoman, Geri Lama, suggested that Mr. Dunnam‟s worries were overblown. This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by a set of dynamic variables (动态的变量): language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics(美学), technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive (解释的) knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture—one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald’s. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging. The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant (移植); the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia (近视) or even blindness.Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know youradversary (对手), know your audience, and know your customer.1. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. All international managers can learn culture.B. Business diversity is not necessary.C. Views differ on how to treat culture in business world.D. Most people do not know foreign culture well.2. According to the author, the model of Pepsi____________ .A. is in line with the theories of the school advocating the business is business the world aroundB. is different from the model of McDonald’sC. shows the reverse of globalizationD. has converged cultural differences3. The two schools of thought___________________ .A. both propose that companies should tailor business approaches to individual culturesB. both advocate that different policies be set up in different countriesC. admit the existence of cultural diversity in business worldD. Both Aand B4. This article is supposed to be most useful for those ___________________.A. who are interested in researching the topic of cultural diversityB. who have connections to more than one type of cultureC. who want to travel abroadD. who want to run business on International Scale5. According to Fortune, successful international companies___________________ .A. earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseasB. all have the quality of patienceC. will follow the overseas local culturesD. adopt the policy of internationalization1-5 CACDBPassage 2Yesterday was the Double Ninth Festival —the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. The auspicious figure connotes eternity (不朽), and thus longevity in our culture. The date’s association with old age became closer and clearer in 1989, when it was designated Senior Citizens’ Day.So yesterday at the Confucian Temple in Beijing, 50 three-generation families were convened to perform traditional rites symbolizing respect for family elders.Children and grandchildren, dressed in traditional costumes, bowed before their parents, or grandparents, in humble reverence, and offered them symbols of longevity. Confucius, if he were there and looked at the crowd from Heaven, must have heaved a sigh of relief. After so manyyears of disregard and denial of the tradition, his descendants are finally trying to live up to their country’s proud label as a “land of courtesy and propriety”.For many of us, especially those who live and work away from home and parents, the Double Ninth Festival is an occasion to make up for our neglect of filial (孝顺的) duties at other times. And the cost can be as low as an unexpected bouquet, or a phone call. That is family. There is nothing wrong on the government’s part to promote awareness of our traditional virtues like respect for the aged. But as the national population structure evolves, taking care of senior citizens is no longer just a family matter. The number of people above 60 has reached 149 million nationwide. In Shanghai, for instance, this age group accounts for more than 20 percent of the local population. While various recent surveys reported reluctance by the elders to spend life’s last years in nursing homes, almost all those with decent facilities and services see overwhelming demand. One of them in Beijing claimed it would take 20 years from now to accommodate all current requests. From that, the government sees challenges, and businesses see opportunities. We hate hearing government officials say tight budget prevents them from building more nursing homes to meet the need. Foot-dragging (迟疑) will only aggravate the pains once aging evolves into a full-blown crisis. We can scarcely imagine the nationwide scenario (情景). It is unrealistic to expect the government to single-handedly handle all the pressures. But there is no excuse for authorities to merely stand aside. Lack of standards, like in many other service sectors, is a main reason why many elders would rather stand the loneliness at their empty nests than go to nursing homes.A responsible government can do a lot in providing comfortable yet affordable nursing homes, while improving care and services in both urban and rural communities. It is the duty of the government to facilitate policies and services to enable the elderly to enjoy their twilight years with little worries about wherever they choose to live.6.What are children supposed to do on Senior Citizens’ Day?A) Be dressed in traditional costumes.B) Bow before their parents.C) Offer their parents symbols of longevity.D) All of the above.7.For whom is the Double Ninth Festival an occasion to make up for what they should have done at other times?A) Teenagers.B) People living and working away from home and parents.C) People with children.D) Elderly people.8.It can be learned from the passage that ______.A) i t’s government’s duty to promote awareness of our traditional virtuesB) taking care of senior citizens is just a family matterC) the number of people above 60 in Shanghai accounts for more than 40 percent of the localpopulationD) most elders don’t like to spend their last years in nursing homes9.According to government officials, what might be the main reason for the shortage of nursing space?A) Disapproval from government.B) Disapproval from the relatives of the elders.C) Lack of standards.D) Tight budget.10.The main purpose of the passage is to ______.A) criticize government officialsB) promote national awareness of respect for and care of the agedC) inform readers with the culture of Senior Citizens’ DayD) criticize the young people for their neglect of taking care of their parents6-10 DBDDBPassage 3Interpersonal conflicts are everywhere. Couples disagree about what to eat, whether to go to the mall, relationships with children, etc. Students and teachers have conflicts over grades. We have road rage on suburban highways, disputes between neighbors, and arguments between workers and bosses. The importance of interpersonal conflict lies in how we handle it. Some helpful terms that describe our options when we encounter conflicts are “flight, fight, or unite.”Flight is what scholars call the exit option. Sometimes you can just walk away. If someone acts aggressively toward you on the highway, you can avoid them. Fighting is very common. Domestic abuse, most violent crimes, and schoolyard fights are usually an outgrowth of interpersonal conflict. A third option is to unite to solve differences cooperatively. Couples can talk through differences of opinion. Teachers and students can settle almost every grade complaint in a way that not only satisfies them but also makes them better students or teachers. However, if the interpersonal conflict is intense, uniting requires help from a third party―someone who helps the two parties in dispute find common interests that can serve as the basis for an agreement. For example, mediators are used on a routine basis in American businesses, and many families see counselors.Individuals can have a big impact on the results of interpersonal conflicts. Out of the three options, “flight, fight, and unite”, the first two are almost alwa ys counterproductive. In reality, violence used in response to violence produces even more violence in return. Flight does not provide a better option either. Flight is not necessarily physically running from a conflict. Rather, we tend to delay dealing with it, hoping that somehow it will just go away. It seldom does. Therefore, individuals are responsible for solving their problems cooperatively. Conflict resolution is a growth industry, but the growing community of conflict resolution professionals still needs to become more visible so that people can learn about it and turn to it when a conflict arises. People also need to become better at resolving disputes themselves. No matter how many mediators there are, and how well they are known, they cannot come close to mediating every interpersonal conflict. People need to learn how to resolve conflicts on their own.11. According to this passage, which of the following statements is true about interpersonalconflicts?A) They occur frequently between students and teachers because of the load of assignments.B) The solution to interpersonal conflicts depends on how we cope with them.C) They cannot be completely conquered unless we stick to our own viewpoints.D) They are absolutely a matter between the two parties involved.12. All of the following are choices offered in the passage when we are confronted with conflictsEXCEPT ______.A) escaping from aggressive peopleB) yielding to the other personC) negotiating to resolve our disagreementsD) taking violent actions to oppose conflicts13. If people choose to unite in the intense conflict described in the passage, it requires ______.A) merely the two parties’ commitmentB) the involvement of law expertsC) the two parties’ common hobbiesD) so meone else’s help apart from the two parties14. Among the three choices listed in this passage, for which one does the writer have apreference?A) Flight. B) Fight. C) Unite. D) Not mentioned.15. In the last paragraph, “conflict resolution is a growth industry” probably implies that ______.A) conflict resolution companies are well on their wayB) more conflict resolution companies have sprung upC) an increasing number of professionals are engaged in conflict resolution, causing rapiddevelopmentD) conflict resolution has already become a mature industry11-15 BBDCCPassage 4When referees see red, they don’t get angry. They may actually favor the competitor in scarlet attire, a new study suggests.A recent study in the journal Nature found that athletes who wore red in combat sports out-performed their opponents wearing blue. The authors of that study suggested that the color red might give a psychological edge to the red-clad athlete, because red is a color associated with dominance and aggressiveness. They suggested that either the red attire increased those feelings in the athlete wearing them or that they intimidated his opponent by suggesting those qualities. But psychologist Hagemann and his colleagues disagreed with these conclusions, saying that the authors had left out one major component of these sports: the referees.“Referees have a very strong influence on this sort of sport,” Hagemann said.“Often, events in a sport happen too fast for a referee to accurately judge them, because the visual system simply can’t process that quickly.”Hagemann suspected that the better performance of the red-clad opponent was in reality a “subconscious bias” for the color on the part of the referees. To test this idea, the researchers showed 42 experienced tae kwon do referees video clips(剪辑)of sparring rounds of five different male competitors of similar abilities. First they wereshown the original videos, with one opponent in red gear, the other in blue; then, they were shown the same clips digitally altered so that the colors were reversed (the refs were unaware of the color switch). On the whole, competitors in red scored an average of 13 percent more points than their opponents in blue. Athletes who started out in blue were awarded more points when they later appeared in red, and those who started out in red received fewer points when in blue.Hagemann told that this finding suggests some sort of unconscious bias toward the color red on the part of the referees. This bias could stem from perceiving red as a more dominant, aggressive color, or red could simply better attract the eye, Hagemann said. The bias only seems to exist in sports such as tae kwon do where competitors are being judged at the same time and referees’ decisions are more influential on how points are decided. While he doesn’t expect the Beijing Olympics to shed the traditional red and blue protective gear for tae kwon do opponents, he does suggest that referees be given electronic aids to help in their decision making.16. The recent study in the journal Nature.A) suggested red-clad athletes might have a psychological advantage over othersB) suggested referees have a very strong influence in combat sportsC) suggested red symbolizes dominance and aggressivenessD) suggested blue-clad athletes often beat their rivals in other colors17. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “attire” in paragraph 1?A) Shoes. B) Sportswear. C) Spirit. D) Skin.18. According to Hagemann, _______.A) basketball team in red might outperform the team in other colorsB) tae kwon do players are encouraged to wear red gears to get better performanceC) the dominant and aggressive red can increase athletes’confidence and intimidate theircomponentsD) referees have a preference for red-clad athletes19. In which way did Hagemann test his idea?A) Through interview. B) Through experiment.C) Through investigation. D) Through analysis.20. Which of the following statement is true according to the passage?A) Even if the process of the combat sports is so quick, referees can make an accuratejudgment.B) The subconscious bias toward red lies in that it is an auspicious color in most countries.C) There would be no influence on the outcome if the referees knew in advance the color hadbeen changed in Hagemann’s research.D) Hagemann’s finding can promote fairness in combat sports.16-20 ABDBDPassage 5Upon reaching an appropriate age (usually between 18 and 21 years), children are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest” and begin an independent life. After children leave home they often find social relationship and financial support outside the family. Parents do notarrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married. Romantic love is most often the basis for marriage in the United States; young adults meet their future spouses (配偶) through other friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions. Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices. In many families, parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves.A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another career. Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to assert their independence. A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father’s business because of a fear that he will lose his autonomy in his father’s workplac e. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family. Coexisting with such love in the American family are cultural values of self-reliance and independence.21. The writer discusses the marriage of young adults in order to show that they _____.A. enjoy the freedom of choosing their spousesB. want to win the permission of their parentsC. have a strong desire to become independentD. try to challenge the authority of their parents22. Most young adults in America would get married for the sake of ____.A. loveB. financial concernC. their parentsD. family background23. Based on the passage, it can be inferred that _____.A. American young adults are likely to follow the suit of their parentsB. most American parents never make major decisions for their childrenC. American young adults possess cultural values of independenceD. when a young adult steps into his twenties, he will leave his home permanently24. A son is unwilling to work in his father’s business mainly because he _____.A. wishes to make full use of what he has learnt in schoolB. wants to prove his independenceC. likes to do the opposite of what his parents approve ofD. tries to show his love for his parents25. The subject matter of this passage is _____.A. cultural values in the American familyB. marriage arrangementsC. young adult’s pursuit of a careerD. decision making21-25 CACBAPassage 6What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, and red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, and an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefergrays and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up — we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.Color does influence o ur moods ― there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides than any other bridge in the area —until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.Light and bright colors make people not only happier but also more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or gray.26. The author regards the psychologists’ findings as _____.A. groundlessB. doubtfulC. reasonableD. unusual27. According to the psychologists, a person’s color preference _____.A. is formed as he grows upB. is acquired through experienceC. is decided by his surroundingsD. is possessed from birth28. It can be concluded from the passage that bright color lovers tend to be _____.A. quietB. activeC. depressiveD. pessimistic29. The example of the bridge is used to illustrate that _____.A. people tend to kill themselves by jumping from bridgesB. color can affect people’s moods to a great degreeC. the bridge should have been repainted earlierD. certain color can kill people sometimes30. The notion that machines painted orange can reduce the risk of accidents ______.A. is a well-accepted factB. remains to be provedC. is an illusion of workersD. is a good wish of scientists26-30 CDBBAPassage 7It’s very necessary for Canada to set up effective transportat ion system because of its enormous size with its sparsely populated distribution. It is also very difficult to make transportation construction on the surface of the country due to its harsh long winter and its mountainous terrain. It’s really amazing for this country to set up a transcontinental railroad since last century. Until 1990, the route length was more than 86,880 kilometers. Most of the country’s freight is transported by Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway. But nowadays fewer and fewer people travel by train.Water transportation was very important before railway construction. Although passenger travel by water is less important than before, waterways remain important for cargo transporting. Waterways include lakes, rivers and sea coastlines. One of the most significant water transportation systems is St. Lawrence Seaway from the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Lake Superior.Because of the increasing number of automobiles, Canada’s road transportation develops very quickly. In 1991, road length has been more than 849,400 kilometers. Road system is becoming more and more important. Trucks carry nearly half of the total freight transported in Canada. With the development of transportation, airplanes became another kind of necessary vehicles since airplanes could be the only access to some areas of the far northern region. Canadian transportation system develops very quickly with the increasingly advanced science and technology. The aim of the transportation is to use substitute fuels and to produce more efficient transportation facilities.31. The passage is mainly about _______.A. the history of Canadian transportationB. the different forms of transport in CanadaC. the condition of transportation in CanadaD. the advancement of Canadian transportation31-35DACDCPassage 8Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his goal is to find it and buy it; the price is a less important thing. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman quickly produces it, and the business of trying it on can be done at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any talk and to everyone’s satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name suggests, tries to sell the customer something else---he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesmanbrings out such a substitute in a rough manner; he does so with skill and politeness: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what other persons tell her. She will try on any number of things. The most important thing in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always searching for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail (挂衣架) to another, to and fro, often retracing (折返) her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a tiring process, but an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.36. The passage tells us that when a man is buying clothes, __________.A) he buys cheap things, regardless of qualityB) he chooses something that others recommendC) he does not mind the price for the right thingsD) he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too dear37. What do men care about when they buy new clothes?A) They care more about the size than the color.B) They like their clothes to be in style.C) They make sure if the shop has just what they want.D) They don’t care much about what to buy.38. If a man can not find exactly what he wants, __________.A) he would buy something similar to what he wantsB) he usually does not buy anythingC) he follows the salesman’s suggestionsD) he would search from rail to rail39. What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?A) They welcome suggestions from anyone.B) They listen to advice but never take it.C) Women often buy things that they need most.D) Women rarely consider the price of the things they buy.40.
