Certificate Craze On Campus
Nowadays there is a "certificate craze" on campus. Thousands of college students are keen on working for various certificates, such as CET Band 4 and Band 6 certificates, Business English Certificate, and other different professional certificates.
But why is there such a craze? First, it has much to do with the fierce competitive workforce market. It is widely believed that the more certificates a college student has on graduation, the better chance he has for a decent job. Second, many students just want to prove themselves by working for a certificate. They have been interested in a certain field and have worked hard on it, so they want a certificate to justify their efforts.
I think the certificate craze is good for both the society and students. When students combine their work for some certificates with their academic efforts, their college life will be more fruitful than otherwise.
Topic 2: On Food Safety
The problem of food safety has attracted much attention recently. Everyone is astonished at the news that thousands of babies suffered from serious health problems because they had been fed with some poisonous milk products.
The issue of food safety is so important that we cannot afford to ignore it. For one thing, food safety concerns the well-being of all the people in the country. For another, failure to ensure the safety of food causes damage to the image of our government, especially when such food is exported to other countries. Furthermore, unsafe food can undermine consumers' confidence in the food industry, which may cause disastrous effect to our economy.
Therefore, our government should take all measures to make sure that all the food in our country is safe to eat. The government must strictly carry out food safety standards, and impose severe punishment on those who violate them.
Topic 3: Avoid Plagiarism
Plagiarism has been an increasingly serious problem on campus. Many college students use others' ideas without reasonably stating the sources. Even some professors are discovered to have borrowed passages from the works of others.
Undoubtedly plagiarism has much bad effect. First, those whose works have been plagiarized suffer losses because their efforts were not duly recognized. Second, those who plagiarize also endure great mental pressures. Plagiarism may have brought them something they need for the moment, but they are always in a fear that someday
t
To avoid plagiarism, both prevention and correction are needed. For prevention, all people should be taught lessons on the various forms of plagiarism. For correction, severe punishment is called for when plagiarism is discovered.
Topic 4: My View on Writing a Blog
More and more college students are becoming bloggers. They keep blogs to note down what happens to them, to describe their emotions and feelings, and to express opinions on current affairs.
There are different views regarding this phenomenon. Some people think it's a good idea for college students to keep a blog. They say blogs do not only provide an outlet for the students' inner feelings like traditional diaries, but also provide a channel through which young people can communicate with one another. Others think differently. They are afraid that some students have spent too much time on their blogs, trying hard to win clicks and replies. Therefore both their academic work and their everyday interpersonal relationships may suffer.
In my opinion, both views are reasonable. While writing blogs are advisable, the students also need to be aware of its potential shortcomings.
Topic 5: Cars and Air Pollution
Too many cars have caused a lot of serious problems in our world. Besides congestion, accidents and fast fuel consumption, cars are responsible for a good part of air pollution in big cities.
One possible solution is to design and develop clean cars and clean fuels. In Shanghai, some of the public buses begin to run on natural gas, which does not give off as much carbon dioxide as petrol.
Another solution is to develop modem public transportation systems and restrict the use of private ears. If the price of petrol rises constantly and the public vehicles are efficient and convenient enough, most people will not buy private cars. Thus, the total number of cars in big cities will reduce greatly.
On the whole, the elimination of air pollution needs the collective efforts from the government, the public and the environmentalists.
Topic 6: On Volunteering
The volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people in recent years, especially among young people.
Volunteering is of tremendous benefits to both t
Besides, volunteering would be beneficial to the volunteers themselves. Getting involved in volunteering, volunteers will be exposed to a new environment, and they can learn how to work well in a team, how to improve their interpersonal skills and organiz
ational skills, all of which are critical for their professional growth.
As a college student, I sincerely hope that everyone would join the volunteering work. It is not only good to our society, but also a chance for us to grow and to learn.
Topic 7: A Letter to Computer Hackers
1.随着电脑的普及,电脑黑客们也越来越猖獗;
2.分析他们的所作所为给社会、他人带来的损失;
Dear hackers,
With the growing popularity of the Internet and online transactions, one of the universal issues that has caused increasing concern is how to stay safe online, but your name never fails to cause panic among netizens.
When you, hackers, use your computers to gain unauthorized access to information on other people's computers, you are committing crimes. On the one hand, with your breaking into computer systems run by banks, companies and even government departments, some confidential documents or data will be at risk of being leaked out. On the other hand, your existence makes people doubt the safety of the Internet and hesitate to be involved in activities such as online business.
In an age of computer technology and network, cyber security is what we are looking for. No matter how interested in hacking you have ever been, please convert your interest, for example, into safeguarding our Internet.
Yours sincerely,
John
Topic 8: Please Be Punctual
With the advent of the era of knowledge economy, time is treasured by an increasing number of people. However, many young people attach little importance to punctuality, which, in my opinion, will give rise to many problems.
First, you may impress other people as being unreliable and dishonest. When you are late for a job interview, the boss may refuse to give you the chance since people tend to assume that if you cannot fulfill your promise, you have no sense of responsibility and can do nothing well. Second, others may think that you show no respect to them.
Therefore, university students should learn that punctuality is a good habit. Being punctual, you are showing respect to others and, in return, you will win other
Topic 9: On Overseas Study
With the deepening of reform and opening-up of our country, many people dream of going abroad for further study. They insist that the modern research facilities, world famous professors and excellent environment in those foreign colleges can help lay a perfect foundation for their future development.
However, there are still m
any people who favor studying at home. They argue that studying abroad is too expensive and doesn't pay. They also point out that there are no language and cultural barriers if they study in our country.
Both opinions are acceptable in some sense. If students have the chance and financial resources, they should seize the opportunity to go abroad and broaden their eyes. On the other hand, if conditions don't permit, they can pursue their studies in top universities at home. What counts is not the place where they study, but what they can learn.
Topic 10: On Students Being Tutors
1.目前很多大学生利用假期寻找家教等工作;
2.大学生当家教,既可以自食其力,又可以丰富自己的假期生活;
About two weeks from now, college students will begin to enjoy their long summer holidays. Many are looking for odd jobs, of which tutoring is almost the most popular one.
These students say, by doing pan-time jobs, they can not only make some money for next term's tuition, but also enrich their holidays. They prefer to be tutors because this has more to do with what they have learned in class.
As a student, I myself have also been a tutor. But I didn't wait in line until I was chosen. I put up an advertisement with my school scripts attached. So, my suggestion to my fellow students is: be a tutor only when you are good at your courses.
Topic 11: On TV Shows
Nowadays, TV shows are very popular. TV programs like Super Girls and Dreams in China have attracted thousands of people to participate, and many more wait to watch them when they are on show.
Why are so many people interested in such programs? Advocates say that these programs provide excellent opportunities for young people to express themselves and to show their specialty. They help improve young people's self-confidence and can add to their courage.
However, some people criticize these programs, arguing that they are not only a waste of energy, money and time, but also a revelation of social vanity.
From my point of view, we need not be too critical about such TV programs. If they can bring happiness to those
Topic 12: Modern Technology and Human Intimacy
Has modem technology brought people nearer together or taken them farther apart?
Apparently modem transportation, such as the plane, has made it easier and faster for people to travel around the world than before. Telecommunication technologies, such as the Internet, enable people to send information to a distant place in
stantly. Imagine it once took months before the emperor got to know the result of an important war! Therefore, it is safe to say that modem technology has significantly drawn people nearer.
However, some people feel differently. They say family members are no longer talking with each other over meals because they are watching TV. Many people now greet each other with short messages instead of visiting their friends and relatives in person.
It's a pity that modem technology should make people feel farther apart. Actually, it is not modem technology, but our bad habit, that is to blame.
Topic 13: An Inquiry Letter
Dear Mr. Wang,
Thank you for your kind letter dated June 16th 2009 accepting our request for a field visit to your company.
I have told the good news to the students concerned. They are a group of 46 students aged between 17 and 18, and they are taking part in the visit as part of their career development program.
I would like to suggest June 28th for the visit. The group will leave at 9:00 am and should arrive at your company by 9:40 am.
By the way, would it be possible for the students to talk to some of your new employees at an informal meeting?
I would be grateful if you could inform me as to whether these proposals are suitable and I would like to thank you once again for your cooperation.
Yours sincerely,
Liu Mci
Topic 14: Please Observe Traffic Rules
According to the latest statistics, 13 percent of inpatients are hospitalized as a result of traffic accidents. The problem is getting worse with a rapid rise in the number of vehicles on the roads and increased violations of traffic rules by drivers, pedestrians and bicycle-riders.
Driving in wrong directions, making unsafe turns
That is a big problem in cities since a modem city needs not only skyscrapers, but also civilization in its people. If all people are willing to comply with traffic rules, our country will be a much safer place to live on.
Topic 15: Should College Students Be Involved in Business Activities?
In recent years, a new phenomenon has quietly sprung up--college students participating in business activities.
Inevitably, like many other newly-emerged things, this has also
received praise and criticism.
From my viewpoint, if the students can put what they have learned in school into practice or integrate their major with social activities, it is an important and valuable opportunity for them. But if they are just obsessed with the activities, that is, their exclusive goal is to earn money or to satisfy their excessive pride, it is not a wise action, and may even lead to some unexpected trouble. What's more, if the students neglect their study, then it is no doubt putting the cart before the horse. College students who are involved in business activities should make clear to themselves the purpose of doing so, and make full use of the opportunity.
Topic 16: On Energy Shortage
Energy shortage is a huge problem for modem society, and it has a negative impact on people's daily life and economic development.
Many elements account for energy shortage. Firstly, rapid economic development prompts an increase of energy consumptions in different industries. Secondly, population growth creates greater demands for household energy usage. Thirdly, people have yet to develop the sense of energy conservation.
Actually we can do a lot to save energy in daily life. Turn off lights and fans when nobody is in the room; design buildings with the concept of energy saving; use public transit instead of private cars in rush hours... It is very easy for us to do these things as long as we have the sense of energy conservation, and we should do it right now!
