Why would anyone want to learn about something that's not around anymore?First we walked into a big room.I was staring at the bones of a giant beast! It almost filled the room. Two huge, dark holes in its boney head stared back at me. It was Dinosaur Sue.Our guide told us that when Sue was living, she weighed more than 150 fourth graders put together! He asked us to look at her teeth which were long and sharp. The guide said Sue’s teeth show that she was a meat eater.I’m glad I wasn’t around when the dinosaurs were alive. I might have been lunch for her!As I looked at it,I imagined what the dinosaur had looked like when it was alive.Suddenly I realized that these bones had once belonged to a living creature here on Earth. It made me wonder about other creatures that had once lived here. NowI understand why people want to learn about these creatures.Perhaps I will hunt for dinosaur bones someday. Most of the parents say it is, at least in part: “In organic food, there is less pesticide residues (农药残留) ”, say some parents. Early childhood exposure to lead and other poisonous substances at very low levels is now known to be harmful, so parents think caution should be in order.“Clearly if you eat organic product, you have fewer poisonous substances in your body, ”Joel Forman, an associate professor says. That’s particularly important for young children, he says, because they are especially easy to be hurt by chemical exposure while their brains are developing. That puts parents in a difficult situation, because they also want children to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, not less. But organic food still cost more in most cases, and many parents can’t afford to buy it only.Suggestions are made that parents should think about buying organic fruits and vegetables that are more likely to contain more pesticide residue, and going conventional for those that tend to have less.Another similar case is about milk, conventionally –raised cows are often fed antibiotics(抗生素) to stimulate growth, and parents are worried that this may do harm to children. “Growth hormone(激素) in cows doesn’t work in people,” Forman says. “There’s very little in the milk. And even if there was, it wouldn’t be absorbed. ”46. Parents are worried about .A) chemical exposure to milk B) high cost of organic vegetablesC) poisonous substances in food D) growth hormone in fruits47. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart(失败,破裂).The Jacobs family worked out a solution: They asked and received more aid from the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the government loan program. The twin sons will be able to finish school. With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around. At the same time, tuition(学费)continues to rise and student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade. It is reported that most middle class families have been financing college education through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide thatstudent loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.51. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strongchoices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.Blessed(幸福的) is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with asingle bar through the center of the letter.Passage OneHere's a familiar story. You're sitting at the dinner table with a furry, four-legged friend scratching at your feet. When you look down, those cute eyes are almost impossible to resist. What is it about a dog's gaze that makes it so charming? A new study by Japanese scientist Miho Nagasawa seems to have found the answer, and it has to do with something called the cuddle(爱抚)chemical. The cuddle chemical has another, more scientific name: oxytocin. Oxytocin is a substance in the blood that encourages bonding. Levels of oxytocin increase, for example, when a mother feeds her newborn baby. According to Nagasawa's study, the same is true when we look deeply into the eyes of a dog.The results of this study can tell us a lot about the history of the bond between humans and dogs. It all started somewhere tens of thousands of years ago. Scientists believe that wolves used to follow humans who were hunting large animals. The wolves would eat the food left behind by the humans.Humans realized that they could use the wolves to help with the hunt, and eventually both species began to work together toward survival.Over time, the wolves that interacted with the humans began to change. They became more loyal to their human partners. The wolves and humans started to depend on each other and bond with each other. These changes are what caused some of the wolves to turn into what we now know as dogs, a new specie^ evolved to better survive in their environment. This process depended a great deal on the bond humans formed with them. And according to Nagasawa's study, this bond was formed with the help of oxytocin, the cuddle chemical.11. What do we know about oxytocin?A. It regulates blood flow.B. It promotes bonding.C. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child —things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.21. According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that _______.A. life for a child is comparatively easyB. a child is always loved whatever he doesC. if much is given to a child, he must do something in returnD. only children are interested in life22. After a child grows up, he_____.A. will have little time playingB. has to be successful in finding a jobC. can still ask for help in time of troubleD. should be able to take care of himself23. Adults are freer to do what they want to do.D. Adults should no longer rely on others.24. The main idea of the passage is that ______.A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some painsB. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hardC. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s lifeD. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life25. The paragraph following the passage will most probably discuss ______.A. examples of successful young menB. how to build up one’s position in societyC. joys and pains of old peopleD. what to do when one has problems in lifePassage 2Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (曲解) one. Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in, or living in a county and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be true from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different after all!Differences between peoples do of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of animal from themselves.26. Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they are _______.A. distortedB. normalC. similar to each otherD. different from its own27. One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will ______.A. find out what its people are likeB. argue in favor of this country and the languageC. know the country and its people betterD. like its inhabitants and their language28. The knowledge one gains by traveling in a foreign county is often _______.A. from second-hand informationB. gathered from other sources than from its inhabitantsC. gained from the arguments about the countryD. different from what one had before the travel29. Differences between peoples ________.A. will gradually disappear because of ease of travelB. do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alikeC. will always continue to exist and the world will be a dull placeD. will not exist as one hopes30. The underlined word “However” most probably means _________.A. somewhatB. by whatever meansC. anyhowD. no matter whatPassage 3We arranged that Kissinger would fly to Vietnam for talks early in July and then stop in Pakistan on the way back. There he would develop a stomachache that would require him to stay in bed and not be seen by the press. Then, with President Yahya’s cooperation he would be taken to an airport where a Pakistan plane would fly him over the mountains to China.Kissinger’s trip was given the code(密码) name Polo after Marco Polo, another Western traveler who made history by journeying to China. Everything went without a hitch. His slight illness in Islamabad received only minor attention from reporters covering him. They accepted the story that he would be confined to bed for at least a couple of days and began making arrangements for their own entertainment.Because of the need for complete secrecy and the lack of any direct communication facilities between Beijing and Washington, I knew that we would have no word from Kissinger while he was in China. Even after he had returned to Pakistan it would still be important to maintain secrecy. So before Kissinger left, we agreed on a single code word —Eureka -which he would use if his mission were successful. On July 11, Al Haig, who knew our code word, phoned me to saythat a cable from Kissinger had arrived.“What’s the message?” I asked.“Eureka,” he replied.31. The statement “everything went without a hitch” (Para.2) most probably means that ______.A. nothing was easy with the missionB. the plans were carried out with great difficultyC. things went smoothlyD. there was no possibility of success34. There was no news from Kissinger while he was in Beijing, chiefly because _______.A. his trip had to be kept secretB. President Yahya did not go with KissingerC. communication between Beijing and Islamabad was difficultD. the negotiation(谈判) was not successful35. The passage implies that Kissinger’s message “Eureka”was sent _______.A. when the negotiation started in BeijingB. as soon as he arrived in WashingtonC. when he flew to Vietnam on July 11D. when the negotiation was completed in BeijingPassage 4No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the U.S.A. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 144 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Distinguished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational”, which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with television.Just as American newspapers give way to all tastes, so do they also try and apply to readers for all political persuasions. A few newspapers support extremist (过激分子) groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers attempt to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are essentially moderate. Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views in order to present a balanced picture. As in other democratic countries American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the fears of the Vietnam War.36. There are fewer national newspapers in ______.A. Britain than in the U.S.A.B. France than in BritainC. the U.S.A. than in Britain or FranceD. France than in the U.S.A. or Britain37. Most American newspapers try to entertain their readers because______.A. they have to keep up a good relation with themB. they have to compete with televisionC. they have to write about crime, sex and rumorD. they have to give factual news in an interesting way38. Many American newspapers attract readers of different political tendency by ______.A. supporting extremist groups from time to timeB. inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for themC. avoiding carrying articles about extremistsD. printing articles representing different political viewpoints39. In this passage the underlined word “press” (Para.2) means ______.A. a machine for printingB. the business of printingC. great forceD. newspapers40. 2015学位英语真题
2015. 05.09学位英语真题Part I Reading comprehensionPassage 1Maggie Walker was born in 1976 in Richmond, Virginia. Her mother was once a slave in a rich woman’s house. When Maggie was very young, a thief killed her father. Her family was impoverished, so Maggies’mother started doing laundry in her home. Maggie had to help her. She washed clothes every day, but she continued to go to school. She was a very good student, especially in math. After Maggie graduated from high school, she got a hob as a teacher. In 1886, she married Armistead Walker. They had two sons and Maggie stayed home to care for them. She also volunteered to help a social organization called the Order of St. Luke. This organization helped African Americans take care of the sick and bury the dead. Maggie Walker loved the work of the organization. The organization believed that African Americans should take care of each other.Over the years, Maggie Walker had more and more responsibilities with the organization. In 1895, she suggested that St. Luke begin a program for young people.(76) This program became very popular with schoolchildren. In 1899, Walker became Grand Secretary Treasure of the St. Luke organization. However, because she was a woman, she received less than half the salary of the man who had the job before her.The Order of St. Luke had a lot of financial difficulties when Walker took over. It had a lot of unpaid bills and only $31.61 in the bank. But soon Maggie Walker changed all of that. (77) Her idea was to get new members to join the organization. In just a few years, it grew from 3,400 members to 50,000 members. The organization bought a $100,000 office building and increased its staff to 55. Now, under his leadership, the city is preparingto end the ban. It will be replaced by a policy that allows phones inside schools but tells students to keep them packed away during class. Many schools have a rule about enforcing the ban that says, “If we don’t see it, we don’t know about it.” That means teachers are OK with students bringing in cell phones, as long as they stay out of sight and inside bags and pockets. But at the 88 city schools with metal detectors, the ban has been strictly enforced. The detectors were installed to keep weapons out of schools, but the scanners (扫描仪) can also detect cell phones. So students at these schools must leave their phones at home or pay someone to store it for them. The ban was put into place in 2007 under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Ending the ban will also likely end an industry that has sprung up near dozens of the schools that enforce the ban. Workers in vans (厢式货车) that resemble food trucks store teens’ cell phones and other devices for a dollar a day.(78) Critics of the ban say cell phones are important safety devices for kids during an emergency. They also say that enforcement of the ban is uneven and discriminatory. Where the ban is enforced, it puts a disadvantage on students who can’t afford to pay to store their phones. Before putting an official end to the cell-phone ban, city education officials are working on creating a new policy. (79) It will include rules about not using the phones during class or to cheat on tests.6. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?A. Passage 3Babies who are breast-fed may be more likely to be successful in life, a new study published Tuesday suggests. The study followed more than 3,000 babies into adulthood in Brazil. The researchers found those who were breast-fed scored slightly higher in intelligence tests in their 30s, stayed in school longer and earned moremoney than those who were given formula(配方奶粉).“B reast-feeding not only has short-term benefits, but also breast-feeding has long-term benefits,” says Bernardo Lessa Horta of the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, who led the study being published in the Lancet Global Health.(80) Doctors have long known that breast-feeding can be good for a baby’s health. This is especially true in poor countries, where water can be contaminated. For instance, a baby given formula in developing countries is 14 times more likely to die in the first six months than one who’s breast-fed. In the U.S., some research has suggested that breast-feeding may raise a baby’s IQ by a few points. But a recent study with siblings(兄弟姐妹)found little advantage to breast-feeding.Horta says these previous studies didn’t follow children into adulthood to see if breast-feeding had long-term effects. So Horta analyzed data collected from 3,493 volunteers he had his colleagues have been following since birth. They are now in their 30s. First, the researchers gave the subjects IQ tests. Those who were breast-fed for 12 months or more had IQ test scores that were 3.76 points higher than those who were breast-fed for less than one month, the team found. When Horta and his colleagues looked at how much education the subjects had gotten and how much money they were making, they also found a clear difference: Those who were breast-fed stayed longer in school for about an extra year and had monthly salaries that were about a third higher.11. Answer Sheet with o single line throught the center.16、根据以下内容回答16-35题:The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discu-ssion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces.1ess and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population.Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth val了from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources,it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate.Whatever the consequences may be.In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more Com-plex.A decreasing birth rate may lead tp unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened.Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which iS stable or in decline.A smaller population may mean__________ .A.higher productivity, but a lower average incomeB.lower productivity, but a higher average incomeC.lower productivity, and a lower average incomeD.higher productivity, and a higher average income17、According to the passage,a large population will provide a chance for stableD.is out of control19、According to the passage, slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for__________ .A.a developed nationB.a developing nationC.every nation with a big populationD.every nation with a small population20、It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because__________ .A.there are too many underdeveloped countries in the worldB.underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial developmentC.different governments have different views about the problemD.even developed countries may have complex problems21、根据以下内容回答21-40题:A youngster's social development has a profound effect on his academic progress.Kids who have trouble getting along with their classmates can end up behind academically as well and have a higher chance of dropping out(退学).In the early grades especially, experts say, youngsters should be encouraged to work in groups rather than individually so that teachers can spot children who may be having problems making friends.“When children work on a pro-ject,”says Lillian Kate,an educational professor at the University of Illinois,“they learn to work together,to disagree,to think to take turns and lighten tensions. These skims can’t be learned through lecture. We all know people who have wonderful technical skills but don’t have anysocial skills.Relationships should be the first R.”At a certain age, children are also learning to judge themselves in relation to others. For most children, school marks the first time that their goals are not set by an internal clock but by the outside world.Just as the l-year-old struggling to walk the 6-year-old is struggling to meet adult expectations.“Young kids don’t know how to distinguish early-childhood education for the state of New Jersey,if they try hard to do something and fail, they may conclude that they will never be able to accomplish a particular task. The effects is serious,”says Hills,“a child who has had his confidence really damaged needs a rescue operation.”The author seems to think that a kid’S poor relationship with his classmates would__________ .A.have negative effects on his studyB.develop his the major concern of the passage about a student’s needs?A.Individualism and cooperation..B.Academic Success and independent thinkin9.C.Socialization and feeling of competence.D.Intelligence and respect.26、根据以下内容回答26-45题:It is well known that when an individual joins a group he tends to accept the group’s stand-ards of behavior and thinkin9.He is expected to behave in accordance with these norms——in other words the group expects him to conform. Many illustrations could be given of this from everyday life, but what is of particular interest to psychologists is the extent to which people’s judgments and opinions can be changed as a resuh of group pressure. In a typical experiment, the experimenter ask for volunteers to join a group whicii is inves tigating visual perception. The victims are not, therefore, aware of the real purpose of the ex-periment.Each volunteer is taken to a room where he finds a group of about seven people who are collaborating with the experimenter. The group is shown a standard card which contains a single line. They are then asked to look at a second card. This has three lines on it.One is ob-viously longer than the line on the first card, one is shorter and one the same length. They have to say which line on the second card is the same length as the line on the standard card. The other members of the group answer first but what the volunteer does not know is that they have been told to pick one of the wrong lines. The volunteer sees that the other members of the group unanimously choose a line which is obviously not the same length as the one on the standard card. When it is his turn to answer he is faced with the unanimous opinion of the rest of the gmup—all the others have chosen line A but he quite clearly sees line B as correct. What will he do?According to Asch, more than half of the victims chosen will change their opinion. What is equally surprising is that, when interviewed about their answers, most explained that they knew the group choice was incorrect but that they yielded to the pressure of the group because they thought they must be suffering from an optical illusion.Psychologists are interested in__________ .A.how far group pressure can influence people’s judgmentsB.how to make judgments according to everyday experienceC.how to change people’s judgmentsD.the group’s standards of social behavior27、In the experiment.who have been told to.pick the wrong line?A.The victims.B.The volunteer.C.The experimenter.D.The other members.28、In what circumstances do most people yield to pressure?A.When the group is behave differently from othersB.group pressure is caused by the interference of the psychologists C.psychologists wish to change the people’s judgments and opinionsD.people will change their ideas under group pressure30、The best title of this passage would be__________A.A Typical Experiment.B.Are We Afraid to Be Different?C.The Group’S Standards of Behavior and Thinkin9.D.Does Individual Need to Follow a Group’S Standards?31、根据以下内容回答31-50题:“CuIture shock”occurS as result of total immersion in a new culture. It happens to“peo-Dle who haye been suddenly transplanted abroad.”Newcomers may be anxious because they do not speak the language, know the customs,or understand people’s behavior in daily life. The visitor finds that“yes may not always mean“yes”,that friendliness does not necessarily mean friendship,or that statements that appear to be serious are really intended as jokes. The for-eigner may be unsure as to when to shake hands, when to start conversations,or how to approach a stmnger. The notion of“culture shock”helps explain feelings of bewilderment(困惑)and disorientation.Language problems do not account for all the frustrations(挫败)that people feel. When one is deprived of everything that was once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system, knowing how to register for university classes,Ot knowing how to make friends, difficulties in coping with the new society may arise.“…when an individual enters a strange cuhure,he or she is like fish out of water.”New-comers feel at times that they do not belong to and feel alienated from the native members of thecuhure. When this happens visitors may want t0·reject everything about the new environment and may glorify and exaggerate(夸大)the positive aspects of their own culture.Conversely visitors may scorn their native country by rejecting its values and instead choosing to identify with(if only temporarily)the value of the new country. This may occur as an attempt to over—identify with the new culture in order to be accepted by the people in it.The expression“he or she is like fish out of water”suggests__________ .A.people away from their cultures can hardly survive in a new cultureB.a fish can not Each passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single bar through the center of the letter.Passage OneHere's a familiar story. It is in the human gene.D. It is good for health.12. When we look deeply into a dog's eyes, the levels of our oxytocin ____.A. reduce over timeB. go either up or downC. are on the riseD. remain unchanged13. The old fellow had some drawings that he wanted Rossetti to look at and tell him if they were any good, or if they at least showed potential talent.Rossetti looked them over carefully. After the first few, he knew that they were worthless, showing not the least sign of artistic talent. But Rossetti was a kind man, and he told the elderly man as gently as possible that the pictures were without much value and showed little talent. He was sorry, but he could not lie to the man. The visitor was disappointed, but seemed to have expected Rossetti's judgment. He then apologized for taking up Rossetti’s time, but would he just look at a few more drawings—these done by a young art student? Rossetti looked over the second group of drawings and immediately became enthusiastic over the talent they revealed. “These,” he said, “oh, these are good. This young student has great talent. He has a great future if he will work hard and stick to it.”Rossetti could see that the old fellow was deeply moved. “Who is this fine young artist?” he asked. “Your son?” “No,” said the old man sadly. “It is me—40 years ago. In the United States and Canada, Halloween is widely known and celebrated every year on October 31. Halloween customs, though, can be found i n many other parts o f the globe. I n some places holidays are celebrated that, although named differently, share similar themes: contact with the spirit world involving the spirits of the dead, the devil and angels.Personally, you may not believe in supernatural spirits. You might simply view taking part in Halloween and similar celebrations as a way t o have fun and teach your children to explore their imagination. Many people, though, regard these celebrations a s harmful fo r the following reasons:Firstly, Halloween is actually related to the prospect of contact with spiritual forces, many of which threaten or frighten. Likewise, many celebrations like Halloween have religious origins and are deeply rooted in ancestor worship (祖先崇拜). Even today, people around the world use these days to make contact with supposed spirits of the dead.Secondly, although Halloween has been viewed mainly as an American holiday, each year people i n more and more countries have been adopting it. Many newcomers to the celebration, however, are unaware of the religious origins of Halloween symbols, decorations, and customs, most of which are related to supernatural beings and supernatural forces.Thirdly, thousands of people, who follow ancient Celts(凯尔特⼈), still call Halloween by the ancient name Samhain and consider it to be the most sacred night of the year. Others don’t realize it, while they’ re celebrating the Celtic holiday.I n view o f the foregoing, i t i s wise for you t o know about the dark origins o f Halloween and similar celebrations. Not only that, Americans almost never say “going off t o university” o r “when I was i n university.” That sounds British. Instead, they say “going off t o college” and “when I was in college.”College, university: what' s the difference?Colleges and universities have many things in common. Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both ca n help prepare young people t o earn a living. Bu t many colleges d o n o t offer graduate studies. Another difference i s thatuniversities are generally bigger. They offer more programs and do more research.Another place of higher education, especially in technical areas, is an institute, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yet even an institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. M.I.T. says that 75 percent of freshmen come there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts.Modem universities developed from those o f Europe i n th e Middle Ages. T h e word “university” came from th e Latin universitas, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose. “College” came from collegium, a Latin word with a similar meaning. In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live. Usually each group was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study. The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true.A college can also be a part of a university. For example, Harvard College is the undergraduate part of Harvard University.Programs in higher learning can also be called schools, like a school of engineering or a medical school within university. You know, learning all these terms is an education in itself.16. Americans use “college students” to refer to students either in colleges or universities, because .A. there are more colleges than universities in AmericaB. colleges and universities are actually the sameC. both colleges and universities can offer degreesD. colleges and universities have many things in common17. Each o f the passages is followed by 5questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneA few centuies ago, people looked at the birds and wondered what it would be like to fly like them. There were stories of heroes who glued bird feathers on their arms and flew up into the sky. About 500 years ago, some people dreamed a different dream. Instead of flying up to the sky, they dreamed of falling from the sky!In the 15th century, Italian inventors designed a cone-shaped(锥形) device that was supposed to bring a man down safely from a great height. The operator held on to a handle with a straps strapped to his waist. This was the first known design for a parachute (降落伞).Even the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci sketched a type of parachute. His parachute design was in the shape of pyramid(金字塔). Other inventors also sketched their own designs for a parachute. Unfortunately, these were only designs on paper and no one tested them.A Croatian inventor named Fausto Veranzio looked at Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute design and replaced the pyramid shape with one that looked like a sail from a ship. When Veranzio was 65years old, he fell ill. Thinking he would not live longer, he decided to try out his parachute invention. He built his parachute using wood and cloth. Straping his invention to his waist, he jumped off the tall bell tower in his city. He landed safely! He was supposedly the first man to successfully use a parachute. However, some other people thought this story was not true. If that was the case, then the first person to successfully use a parachute would go to a Frenchman named Louis-Sebastien Lenormand in 1783.16. The first known parachute was designed by ______.A. FrenchmanB. ItalianC. CroatiansD. Englishmen17. Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute was shaped like a ______.A. coneB. featherC. pyramidD. sail18. Which of the following is about Fausto Veranzio is true?A. He copied da Vinci’s parachute design.B. He made his parachute with feather and wood.C. He experimented with his parachute many times.D. He decided to try his parachute after he was seriously ill.19. As for the first man who successfully used a parachute, ______.A. it was said to be Leonardo da VinciB. we know for sure he was VeranzioC. there were some historical recordsD. we don’t know for sure yet20. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the origin of the parachuteB.The dreams of flying and fallingC. the courage of dropping from the skyD. the application of parachute inventionPassage TwoOut of all the students who enroll in a massive open online course(MOOC), only about 5 percent complete the course and receive a certificate accomplishment. This statistic is often cited as evidence that MOOCs are fatally flawed(缺陷的)and offer little educational value to most students. Yet more than 80 percent of students who fill out a post-course survey say they met their primary objective. How do we look at these two facts? We’re used to focusing on completion rates in higher education, but they’re not the only-or even the most meaningful – indicator of engagement in open online courses. With no cost to enroll, no punishment for dropping out, and little reward for actually earning a certificate, MOOCs are fundamentally different from traditional calssess –and students use them in fundamentally different ways.Data from more than 1.8 million students erolled in 36 MOOCs offered by the University of Pennsylvania show that students treat MOOCs like a buffet (自助餐), sampling the material according to their interests and career goals. Some are curious about the subject matter and just watch one or two video lectures; others use the discussion forums to connect with their intellectual peers around the world. Of all enrolled students, nearly 60 percent watch at least one vedio, complete at least one assignment, or post at least once in a forum. So focusing on the tiny fraction of students who complete a MOCCs is misguided. The more important number is the 60 percent engagement rate. Students may not finish a MOOC with a certificate of accomplishment, but the courses nonetheless meet the educational goals of millions.21. What do we learn about MOOCs from Para.1?A. There seems to be conflicting statistics about MOOCs.B. It turns out that MOOCs have failed people’s expectations.C. Most students find it hard to judge the value of MOOcs.D. The educational value of MOOCs is well acknowledged.22. In Para.2, the author stresses ______.A. the primary objective of MOOC studentsB. the significance of competion rates in educationC. the strengths and weakness of open online coursesD. the differences between MOOCc and trditional classes23. According to Para. 3, students choose MOOCs for the following reasons EXCEPT ______.A. earning a certificateB. improving job-related skillsC. meeting their interest in the subjectsD. exchanging ideas with students worldwide24. The sentence “students treat MOOCs as a buffet” (Para.3) ______.A. emphasizes the core value of MOCCsB. demonstrates the daily operation of MOOCdC. indicates students are free to choose MOOC resourcesD. explains what students learn from MOOC courses25. What is the author’s attitude toward MOOCs?A. Critical.B. Supportive.C. Indifferent.D. Neutral.Passage ThreeWhether you are hiking through徒步the magnificent redwoods of Northern California, sleeping under the brilliant stars of the Texas sky or watching the sun rise across the rocky cliffs of Maine, expecting the outdoor world can be inspiring, thrilling, and deeply satisfying. And one of the best ways to enjoy the abundant gifts of the natural world is simple, inexpensive, and available to almost every one. Let’s go camping. When you camp, you create a “home away from home” in the fresh air. You don’t need a lot of fency equipment to enjoy camping. What you need is simply a tent large enough for your family. Practice setting up the tent at home to make sure you are familiar with the process before you go camping.Once you find a good site, it’s time to set up tent. Your first job is to set up your tent. Remove all sticks and rocks from the area. Spread a tarp (防水帆布) over the area where your tent will sit. Set up the tent and be sure to stake it down firmly, even if the weather is mild. Otherwise, strong wind can blow your tent away.Next, you’ll need some firewood for a campfire. If gathering wood is illegal at your campground, you must buy it at the camp store. If gathering dead wood is permitted, go on a firewood-hunting journey and bring in a good supply of wood for your campsite, pile the wood safely away from the campfire ring and where no one will trip over the wood or hurt his or her legs on sharp branches.Being a responsible camper requires that you follow the rules of the campground. People who threaten to harm a country always plot in secret, so the intelligence agencies have to work in secret to find out what is being planned before it happens, so that it can be prevented. They do that in many different ways – by secretly listening to their targets talking on the phone, by planting microphongs to overhear meetings, by watching the targets as they move from place to place and by recruiting some of the targets to act as double agents to report on what is going on.For most of my career I worked in one of the UK’s three intelligence services, MIS, the domestic security service. I first joined in the 1970s, in the middle of the Gold War, when the war was divided into two armed camps, the Soviet Union(前苏联) and its allies on the one side and Western Europe, America and their allies on the other. The Gold War never became a fighting war. It was an intelligence war, with intelligence officers from both sides trying to find out what the other side was doing, what kind of weapons they had, when and if they might start a war and what their plans were. Both sides were secretly w orking in each other’s countries.Nowadays one of the biggest threats to the world, comes from terrorists. Intelligence officers from many differenct countries are working together to find out who they are., where they are and what they are planning. Today’s MIS officers get their intelligence in much the same way as we did during the Gold War, but their task is even more difficult and urgent because most terrorists want to kill people. Many terrorist attacks that are planned and prepared never happen, and we never know anything about them because the intelligence services find them out and prevent them.31. Each o f the passages is followed by 5questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark youranswer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneA few centuies ago, people looked at the birds and wondered what it would be like to fly like them. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the origin of the parachuteB.The dreams of flying and fallingC. the courage of dropping from the skyD. the application of parachute inventionPassage TwoOut of all the students who enroll in a massive open online course(MOOC), only about 5 percent completethe course and receive a certificate accomplishment. This statistic is often cited as evidence that MOOCs are fatally flawed(缺陷的)and offer little educational value to most students. Yet more than 80 percent of students who fill out a post-course survey say they met their primary objective. How do we look at these two facts? We’re used to focusing on completion rates in higher education, but they’r e not the only-or even the most meaningful –indicator of engagement in open online courses. With no cost to enroll, no punishment for dropping out, and little reward for actually earning a certificate, MOOCs are fundamentally different from traditional calssess – and students use them in fundamentally different ways.Data from more than 1.8 million students erolled in 36 MOOCs offered by the University of Pennsylvania show that students treat MOOCs like a buffet (自助餐), sampling the material according to their interests and career goals. It turns out that MOOCs have faile d people’s expectations.C. Neutral.Passage ThreeWhether you are hiking through徒步the magnificent redwoods of Northern California, sleeping under the brilliant stars of the Texas sky or watching the sun rise across the rocky cliffs of Maine, expecting the outdoorworld can be inspiring, thrilling, and deeply satisfying. Do not burn food or plastic in your campfire. Make sure that you leave your campsite in good condition for the next campers. Just before leaving the site, make a final check to be certain that your campfire is completely out. Pour water on the ashes just to be safe!26. As is suggested by the aurhor, you should practice setting up your tent ______.A. before the weather turns badB. before your first camping upC. after having selected your campsiteD. once you have decided where to go27. What is the first thing you should do after choosing a campsite?A. Gather firewood.B. Spread a tarp on the ground.C. Set up the tent.D. Remove sticks and rocks from the tent area.28. You can gather firewood only ______.A. after you are sure that it is permittedB. after you are certain that no one will get hurtC. if there is no camp store nearbyD. if firewood is out of stock in a camp store29. For instance, a baby given formula in developing countries is 14 ti mes more likely to die in the first six months than one who's breast-fed. So Horta analyzed data colle cted from 3,493 volunteers he and his colleagues have been following since b irth. They are now in their 30s. First, the researchers gave the subjects IQ tests. Those who were breast-fed for 12 months or more had IQ test scores t hat were 3.76 points higher than those who were breast-fed for less than one month, the team found. When Horta and his colleagues looked at how much education the subjects had gotten and how much money they were making, they also found a clear diff erence: Those who were breast-fed the longest stayed in school for about an extra year and had monthly salaries that were about a third higher.1.
