In the morning light, I could see the shadows that were etched(蚀刻)deep within the lines surrounding his eyes. Each morning I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten class. We were new to the neighborhood so that I didn’t know many of my neighbors. On one beautiful autumn morning, as we passed his house, my daughter called out to him, “Hi, Mr. Man!” Always knowing she was an outgoing child, I wasn’t surprised at her enthusiasm. But her cheerfulness soon faded when the man didn’t look at her and say “Hi” back.As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “ Maybe he is having a bad day.” Later I knew that Bob lost his wife in a car accident.A few days later, as we approached Bob’s house on our way to school, my daughter calledout “Hi, Man!” and as usual, he didn’t respond. But then she ran onto his front lawn and picked up a beautiful red autumn leaf. She continued up one step and handed it to him.I held my breath. As she skipped back to me, she said, “See you tomorrow, Mr. Man!” This time, he acknowledged her. In a soft and gentle voice, he thanked her and said, “See you tomorrow.”From then on, Bob and my daughter exchanged greetings each morning. Our friendship with Bob continued for many years. But the sweetest day is the day when Bob attended my daughter’s high school graduation. Bob gave my daughter a gift--- a book on identifying various plants and trees. There, tucked in the pages that described an oak tree, was the leaf my daughter had given to Mr. Man when they first met. He had dried and pressed it and kept it all those years.5.What puzzled the girl?A.The cause of the man’s sadness.B.The shadows in the man’s eyes.C.The man’s sitting still on the steps.D.The man’s not answering her greeting.6.How did the author feel when his daughter gave the red leaf to the man?A. A Greeting From a GirlCBelgium is divided into three munities. Each one has its own language and traditions. But the people of Belgium are united in their love for Belgian potato fries. The fries are prepared and sold the same way in all areas of the country. The Reuters news service reports that potatoes reached Belgium in the 16th century. But it was not until the 19th century that restaurants and others began selling fried potatoes throughout the country as a separate meal.Recently, a Belgian group launched a campaign aimed at getting the United Nations to recognize the popular treat. The group wants the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to place the food on its cultural heritage(遗产) list. The UNESCO list recognizes more than 300 objects, beliefs, and practices. They include Turkish coffee and the traditional Chinese theater known as Peking Opera. The list also includes a dance, the Argentinian tango, and the singing of the Aka pygmies of the Central African Republic. UNESCO says the list is “made up of intangible heritage elements (非物质文化遗产元素)that help show the diversity of heritage and raise awareness about its importance”.Belgian potato fries are traditionally sold in a paper wrapper, or cone, in a “frikot”. There are about 5,000 fritkots in Belgium. That means they are 10 times more mon than McDonald’s restaurants in the United States. The national organization of fritkot owners says the small, often unfurnished buildings are much like Belgium itself. It says these buildings bine the country’s acceptance of disorder with a dislike of structures that all look the same. The solution may be insects from your backyard! Scientists are turning insects into a source of healthy oil. Even though insects are a food source in some parts of the world, to many people, the thought of eating them is very disgusting.“In the western countries, there is no culture of eating entire insects, so when the idea is to use the protein in powder as an ingredient, people might tend to receive this better protein even if they can’t see it,”said researcher Daylan Tzompas-Sosa. “There are many uses for the oil in general, but we are investigating the use of these oils for a food, as a food ingredient.”The Mexican researcher, working in the Netherlands, said insects are a great source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which can help treat anxiety disorder symptoms. Backing up the increased reliance on insects is the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. In a xx report, the UN agency allowed the cultivation of bugs as a food source, saying it’s environmentally friendly and could boost the world’s food production. There are clear reasons that experts advise people to eat the insects. Experts say insects require little food to grow and the backyard can be a good place to raise them. And there’s no shortage of protein-rich insects, which contain fat, vitamins, fiber and minerals.Researchers say different bugs provide unique tastes and textures. “This is very liquid and it has a different color, so this can be used as a dressing and it’s easy to use and this can be used for pastry, because for pastry you need hard fats,” stated Tzompas-Sosa.But not all insects produce good oil. Cockroaches don’t. The bug oils must be tested to make sure they are safe to consume. But getting over the “ick factor” may be a bigger challenge.13.What is the author’s attitude towards the use of bug oils?A.DoubtfulB. ObjectiveC. SupportiveD. Unfavorable.14.Why do experts suggest eating the insects?A.They are rich in minerals.B.They have different colors.C.They taste good.D.They’re easy to raise.15.From the last paragraph, we can learn that __________.A.all insects cannot produce good oilB.the bug oils are the most deliciousC.it’s safe to consume the bug oilsD.the use of bug oils is banned第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Get aboard if you want to learn more about this underground transportation system. This is an unusual form of transportation, because it is a tunnel that trains travel through and not an actual form of transportation. The Chunnel is actually the English nickname for the Channel Tunnel. In French, it is called le tunnel sous la Manche. It is a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover. It connects Cheriton in Kent, England with Sangatte in northern France. It is the second longestrail tunnel in the world.Did you know that the British and the French had a race whi1e they were building the Chunnel? The race was to see who could get to the middle of the tunnel first. The British won by a little bit. It took 15,000 workers over seven years to dig the tunnel. The tunnel was finished in 1994. The completed Chunnel cost about $ 21 billion. But it all paid off, because it became very popular, very quick. Millions of people use it. Now it is getting even more popular. There are three complete tunnels in the Chunnel. The two outside ones are the passenger trains. The small inner one is a guidance train. The guidance train is not used for transportation. Each track is exactly parallel to each other. There are four different train systems in the Chunnel. The Eurostar is a high speed passenger service that connects London, Paris, Brussels, and Lille. The Eurotunnel shuttle is a rail ferry service. These shuttles carry cars. These are railcars that allow drivers to drive their vehicles on and off. There are also two Eurotunnel goods service trains. Now you know more about the Chunnel. Everybody off, this is the last stop.36.The Channel Tunnel links ______ with _______.A.Dover; Kent B.London; ParisC.Lille; Brussels D.Cheriton; Sangatte37.Which of the following shows the structure of the tunnels in the Chunnel?A.B.C.D.38.The Eurotunnel shuttle is intended to carry _________.A.passengers B.drivers and their vehiclesC.goods D.staff members of the Chunnel 39.The text can most probably be __________.A.found in a textbookB.read in a magazineC.broadcast on a trainD.heard in a railway stationWe are not rich by what we possess but rather by what we can do without.——Immauel KantMany times my friend June would say, “If I ever get rich, I’m getting a completely new wardrobe (大衣柜)and moving into a bigger apartment.” I thought of her words and her chances of being rich are about as good as mine. But, to everyone’s surprise, a few years ago June did come to large inheritance(遗产).At first June said very little about the money. As the initial shock disappeared, she became excited, June is a great believer in making lists, so I was surprised to find her writing down all the ways she would spend her new wealth. As time went on, she started revising the list. What had been midway down the list was now at the top. At last, I said to her, “You know, it isn’t necessary to spend all your inheritance at once. Take come time; think about it.” “I know, I know,” she answered with a little bit anger. Then one morning June called, “I’ve decided how I want to use my new inheritance. I want to see what you think,” she said. This wasn’t something I looked forward to, but we had been friends so long.As we sat, June spread a sheet of paper on the table. To my great surprise, she had written only two words: Charities, and Grandchildren-in that order. Though I had promised to keep quiet, I couldn’t keep from asking how she came to this decision.“Well,” she said, “I took your advice and thought about it.” She added, “Helping others means a lot to me, so I’m hoping this gift will help people in need.”I interrupted, “But what about this big apartment you most hope to have?”“At first it was hard, but it doesn’t seem as important any more”, she answered with a smile. Then June moved her hand, and I could see a few words written in tiny letters at the bottom of the page. After having a look at the small print, I burst into laughter. June had written: AND one new wardrobe.40.From the passage we can learn that the writer at first .A.was richer than her friend JuneB.was no richer than her friend JuneC.was poorer than her friend JuneD.was interested in money as June41.When making a list of how to deal with her inheritance, June .A.didn’t change it at allB.had a quarrel with the writerC.kept it secret from the writerD.made some changes to it42.When June called the writer to talk about her new decision, the writer . Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village. Jet plane fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance.________________________The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights and sounds of a journey.A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow window of the airplane. The soft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly. Then there is the time spent being “processed” at a modern airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move again to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being “processed” at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern high-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.Man, however, is now a world traveler and can not turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday maker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. Speed controls people’s lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing—or so we are told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.48.What does the writer try to express in Paragraph1?A.Travel by plane has speeded up the growth of villages.B.The speed of modern travel has made distances relatively short.C.The freedom of movement has helped people realize their dreams.D.Man has been fond of travelling rather than staying in one place.49.How does the writer support the underlined statement in Paragraph2?A.By giving instructions.B.By analyzing cause and effect.C.By following the order of time.D.By giving examples.50.According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modern high-speed trainsbecause______.A.they pay less for the ticketsB.they feel safer during the travelC.they can enjoy higher speed of travelD.they don’t have to be “processed”51.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Air travel benefits people and industries.B.Train Travel has some advantages over air travel.C.Great changes have taken place in modern travel.D.The high speed of air travel is gained at a cost. Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from otherspin-offsincluding improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Evennon-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry! While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us.While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.52.Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph1?A.To express his doubts.B.To compare different ideas.C.To introduce points for discussion.D.To describe the conditions on Earth.53.What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph2?A.Humans are nature-born to do so.B.Humans have the tendency to fight.C.Humans may find new sources of food.D.Humans don't like to stay in the same place.54.The underlined word "spin-offs" in Paragraph 4 probably refers to______.A.survival chances B.potential resourcesC.unexpected benefits D.physical possessions55.What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?A.Our genetic makeup.B.Resources on the earth.C.The adaptive ability of humans.D.By-products in space exploration.四、用单词的适当形式完成短文How to learn a oreign language? He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport. He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath. My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend. That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.24. What did Rashid plan to do after his arrival in Sydney?A. Find a houseB. Go shoppingC. Join his familyD. Take his family25. In Search of New Friends.CSince the first Earth Day in 1970, Americans have gotte n a lot “greener” toward the environment. “We didn’t know at that time there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem with it,” says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA.But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a social movement. Business people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions of grass-roots Americans are taking part in the movement. “The understanding has increased many, many times,” says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first. According to US government reports, emissions (排放)from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3 million tons a year to 5.5 tons. The number of cities producing CO beyond the standard has been reduced from 40 to 9. Although serious problems still remain and need to be dealt with, the world is a safer and healthier place. A kind of “Green thinking” has become part of practices.Great improvement has been achieved. In 1988 there were only 600 recycling programs; today in 1995 there are about 6,600. Advanced lights, motors, and building designs have helped save a lot of energy and therefore prevented pollution.Twenty –five years ago, there were hardly any education programs for environment. Today, it’s hard to find a public school, university, or law school that does not have such a kind of program. “Until we do that, nothing else will change!” say Bruce Anderson.28. According to Anderson, before 1970, Americans had little idea about ____.A. the social movementB. recycling techniquesC. environmental problemsD. the importance of Earth Day29. The story is about a young girl named Riley who moves from Minnesota to San Francisco with herfamily and how she deals with her emotions(情感) through the move. These five emotions in Riley’s brain are Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust(厌恶)and Sadness. These emotions play a very important role in her life. I can relate because I am an 11 year –old girl and I am very in touch with my emotions and pre-teen feelings. The film is extremely beautiful and you couldn’t ask for better direction f rom Pete Doctor. The use of the right colors for the characters is great. For example, Joy is yellow, Sadness is blue,Disgust is green, Fear is purple and Anger is of course is red. Sadness plays a main role in the story and it makes me wonder why we are told not to be sad when the time comes. The end of the movie pretty much got me and the whole audience (families couples and even elderly people)in tears and I cried very hard.I recommend(推荐)this movie for anyone from 8 to 18 because it has enough joy in it for younger kids to like it even though it does have some sad moments. I believe that adults will like it too. And give it 4 or 5 stars because it connects to an older audience even though it is designed for a younger audience. I think younger children can see this, but a parent would have to explain some things to them after the movie.32. The author feels connected with the movie because she and the character Riley______.A. enjoy the same movieB. have the same feelingsC. have the same move experienceD. have a similar family background33. What does the author think of Pete Doctor’s job?A. Bad.B. Just-so-so.C. Wonderful.D. Disappointing.34. After seeing the movie, the author has a new understanding of ______?A. fearB. sadnessC. angerD. joy35. In the author’s eyes, the movie _____.A. won’t attract people over 18B. is really unsuitable for childrenC. will be popular among kids and adultsD. can easily be understood by younger kids第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
