For centuries, travellers to China have told tales of magical landscapes and surprising creatures.
数世纪来旅人传诵着关于这片神奇土地以及那些神奇生物的传说Chinese civilization is the world's oldest and today it's largest with well over a billion people.

We know that China faces immense social and environmental problems but there is great beauty here too

China is home to the world's highest mountains,
vast deserts ranging from from searing hot
o mind numbing cold
steaming forests
harboring rare creatures
grassy plains beneath vast horizons
and rich tropical seas
Now, for the first time ever
we can explore the whole of this great country
meet some of the surprising and exotic creatures that live here and consider the relationship of the people and wildlife of China to the remarkable landscaping which they live

Later winter in southen,Yunnan is a busy time for local farmers.在南方的云南，晚冬是当地农夫最忙的季节。

As they prepare the age old paddy fields ready for the coming spring

These hill slopes of the Yuanyang County pluge nearly 2000 metres元阳县的丘陵坡度都很陡，骤降海拔2000米，

Each contains literally thousands of stacked terraces.

Carved out by hand using basic digging tools.

Yunna’s rice terraces are among the oldest human structures in China.

This Buddhish temple near Shanghai has an extraordinary story attached to it.上海附近的佛寺有个让人惊奇的故事
In May 2007,a Wild China camera team filmed this peculiar Suinhoe’s turtle in the temple’s fish pond.
2007年5月一组《野性中国》的拍摄小组拍摄了佛寺里一只很奇特的斑鳖
According to the monks, the turtle had been given to the temple during the Ming dynasty, over 400 years ago.
据和尚说那斑鳖是400年前明朝朝廷给佛寺的
It was thought to be the oldest animal on earth是世上最老的动物Soft-shelled turtles are considered a gourmet delicacy by many Chinese.and when it wasfilmed鳖对中国人而言是美味佳肴,当它被拍摄时
this was one of just three Swinhoe’s turtles left alive in China
是中国仅存三只的其中一只
the rest of its kind having been rounded up and eaten它其他的同伴全被抓起来吃了
Sadly, just a few weeks after filming, this ancient creature died很不幸的是，拍摄后的几个礼拜这古老生物死了
The remaining individuals of its species are currently kept in separate zoos剩下的几只分别养在不同的动物园里
and Swinhoe’s turtle is now reckoned extinct in the wild

In fact ,most of the 25 types of freshwater turtles in China 事实上中国25种淡水乌龟，and now vanishingly race现在消失得很快Winding between Zhangjiajie’s pesks ,crystal clean mountain streams卷绕着张家界，高峰上晶莹剔透的云雾间，
are home to what is perhaps China’s strangest creature.可能是中国最奇怪的生物的家，
This bizarre animal is a type of newt这异乎寻常的动物是蝾螈的一种the Chinese giant salamander中国大蝾螈
In China it is known as the baby fish俗称娃娃娃鱼
because when distressed it makes a sound like a crying infant
因为当遇到危险时，它会发出像婴儿一样的哭声
It grows up to a metre and a half long它能长到一尺半的长度，making it the worlding it the world’s largest amphibian
是世界上最大的两栖类，
under natural conditions,a giant salamander may live for decades.在正常的环境下，大蝾螈能活几十年，
But like so many Chinese animals it is considered delicious to eat 但就向许多中国的动物，它是种美食，
Despite being classed as a protected species尽管被视为保育类动物
giant salamanders are still illegally sold for food大蝾螈仍然被非法地当食物出售，
and the baby fish is now rare and endangered in the wild现在的野生的娃娃鱼是稀有和面临绝种的动物
Fortunately, in a few areas like Zhangjiajie幸运地几个向张家界的地方，
giant salamanders still survive under strict official protection大蝾螈能在官方严格的保护下生存，
Like the white cranes,many of south China’s unique animals.像白鹤一样，许多在中国南方特有的动物，
face pressure from exploitation and competition with people over space and rescources面临了和人类对空间及资源的开发与竞争压力
but if China is living proof of anything it is that wildlife is surprisingly resilient.但如果中国是种见证：那就是野生动物有令人惊讶的恢复力Given the right help只要得到正确的帮助
Even the rarest creatures can return from the brink即使是最稀有的生物，也能从濒临绝种的边缘回生
If we show the will,nature will find the way只要我们有意愿，自然会找到出路。
