We saw beautiful flowers, ponds with ducks swimming, and even a few roaming peacocks showing off their amazing feather displays. A zookeeper was giving a talk about the different plants in the gardens. She showed us some weird looking fruits and vegetables and let us touch and smell them.After lunch, we went to the reptile house to see the snakes and lizards. I'm kind of scared of snakes, but they're also fascinating. We saw a huge python, a king cobra with its hood flared out, and a couple of different rattlesnakes behind thick glass. The lizards were really cool too. There was a Komodo dragon laying on a heated rock and a family of green iguanas climbing around on branches. My favorite was the Gila monster - it's venomous but it moved so slowly and looked like it was smiling.Right before we left, we got to see the gorillas. These were the biggest, most human-like primates at the zoo. There was a Dad gorilla, a Mom, and two youngsters playing and wrestling with each other. No more homework, no more waking up super early, and two whole months to do whatever I want. This is going to be the best summer ever!The first week of vacation, my family didn't have any big plans. We just hung out at home, slept in late, and relaxed. My little brother and I played tons of video games and watched funny movies and shows. Mom let us eat ice cream pretty much whenever we wanted. Even though it was hot outside, we had the A/C blasting inside. Total veg mode!After that first week of freedom though, it was time for our annual summer road trip! Every year we pack up the car and drive somewhere cool for a week or two. This summer we went to the beach in Florida. The drive took forever and a day, but it was worth it when we finally made it to the gorgeous sandy beaches and sparkling blue-green ocean.As soon as we got to the hotel, my brother and I raced each other down to the beach to go swimming. The water was wonderfully warm and relaxing. We spent hours just floating around and playing in the waves. The ocean is my favorite place to swim since you can bob up and down with the currents. So peaceful and fun! We also tried out some boogie boarding which was a total blast.In the evenings, we'd take long walks on the beach searching for cool seashells and watching the beautiful sunsets. My brother and I must have constructed at least twenty over the course of the week. We'd make them bigger and more elaborate each time, incorporating tunnels, bridges, moats, and more. A few times our parents even joined in to help. It was awesome bonding time.When we weren't on the beach itself, there was still so much fun stuff to do. We also did go-kart racing, ate tons of fresh seafood, and went on tons of thrill rides at the pier's amusement park. I loved the roller coasters that went upside down. They live in a cute little mountain town that feels like it's straight out of a postcard.You can't beat playing in the great outdoors when you're staying in a mountain paradise! We went on awesome hikes everywhere, had barbecues in the forests, and went whitewater rafting down the rapids of a churning river. That was probably the biggest adrenaline rush of my life! I don't think I've ever gripped anything tighter than the sides of that raft.At the end of each day, we'd come home completely exhausted but on a major nature high. We'd unwind by hanging out in their backyard, soaking in their hot tub, and stargazing under those insanely bright, starry mountain skies. You could see about a billion times more stars than back in our light-polluted city! It was magical.Way too soon, it was time to leave our favorite cousins behind once again. We made them promise to come visit us for acouple weeks next summer. As we were leaving their little mountain town, I felt like I was leaving a little piece of my heart behind. Something about that pristine natural environment just seemed to nourish my soul. I couldn't wait to go back!Finally, with about a week left before school started again, we shifted into spring cleaning mode at home. My brother and I spent daysthoroughly cleaning our bedrooms, re-organizing our closets, and packing away our summer clothes to make room for fall things. We wanted to be all ready to begin the new school year fresh!I also made sure to get a head start on reading the first few books for my 5th grade reading list. I never want to be behind!
