酸雨是指pH值小于5.6的酸性降水，其主要原因是 大气中SO2、NOX等污染物的含量过高，SO2、NOX溶于水 汽中，经过氧化、凝结形成酸雨。酸雨可使土壤酸化， 使重金属在土壤中的溶解性增加，有毒金属进入农作 物的量增加，从而导致人体摄入量增加。酸雨还可使 水体酸化，影响水生生物的生长，并影响水体的自净 能力。

1952年12月5日至8日，伦敦城市上空高压，大雾笼罩， 连日无风。而当时正值冬季大量燃煤取暖期，煤烟粉尘和 湿气积聚在大气中，使许多城市居民都感到呼吸困难、眼 睛刺痛，仅四日时间内死亡了4000多人， 45岁以上的死 亡最多，约为平时3倍； 1岁以下死亡的，约为平时2倍。 之后的两个月时间内，又有8000人陆续死亡。这是20世纪 世界上最大的由燃煤引发的城市烟雾事件。
