I recommend it to everyone who loves reading.Answer: TheExplanation: The correct form of the verb “be” to use before a noun phrase is “is,” which is the third person singular form. Therefore, “The” should be used to indicate the beginning of a sentence and to refer to the book as a singular entity.4.If you___________(go) to the party, you will meet many of your old friends.Answer: were to goExplanation: The sentence presents a conditional structure, specifically the second conditional, which is used to express a situation that is not true at the moment but could be possible in the future. The correct form of the verb to use in this context is “were to go,” which is the past subjunctive form. This form is used to express a hypothetical situation or a wish.5.The___________(be) of the project was announced last week.A. resultB. resultsC. was resultD. beingAnswer: B. resultsExplanation: The correct form of the noun to use here is “results,” as it is the plural form referring to multiple outcomes of the project. Therefore, “was arriving” is correct for the first clause, and “had been” is correct for the second clause.7.In the___________movie, the___________characters often speak in a humorous way.A. popular, interestingB. popular, interestinglyC. popularity, interestingD. popularly, interestinglyAnswer: BE xplanation: The correct answer is “popular, interestingly” because “popular” is an adjective describing the movie, while “interestingly” is an adverb describing how the characters speak. The preposition “in” requires an adjective to complete the phrase “in the popular movie,” and the word “characters” is followed by an adverb to describe their speaking style.8.The___________of the book is so compelling that it keepsme___________until the very last page.A. content, engagedB. content, engageC. contents, engagingD. content, engaginglyAnswer: CExplanation: The correct answer is “contents, engaging” because “contents” refers to the material within the book, while “engaging” is an adjective that describes the quality of the material. The phrase “keeps me” requires an adjective to describe the state the book keeps the reader in, which is “engaging.” The word “content” is a noun and would not fit in the first blank, and “engage” would be incorrect because it is a verb, not an adjective.9.The__________(be) of the project is to increase public awareness of environmental issues.a)purposeb)purposefulc)purposesd)purposedAnswer: a) purposeExplanation: The correct answer is “purpose” because it is the noun form needed to complete the sentence. The sentence is talking about the “objective” or “goal” of the project, which is a noun.10.By the time John arrived at the party,__________(be)already__________(eat) a lot of food.a)he had; had eatenb)he was; had been eatenc)they were; had been eatend)they were; had eatenAnswer: a) he had; had eatenExplanation: The correct answer is “he had; had eaten” because the sentence is using the past perfect tense to describe an action that happened before another past action (“John arrived at the party”). The first blank requires “had” to indicate the past perfect, and the second blank requires “had eaten” to show that the action of eating was completed before John arrived.五、简答题(本大题有5小题,每小题2分,共10分)1、What are the three main tenses in English grammar? Explain each tense briefly.答案:1.Present Tense: The present tense is used to describe actions, habits, and general truths that are true at the present time. It can also be used to express a future action that is planned or certain to happen.2.Past Tense: The past tense is used to describe actions or states that were true at a specific time in the past. It is also used to talk about past experiences, finished actions, or past habits.3.Future Tense: The future tense is used to describe actions, events, or states that will happen in the future. It can be expressed using will and be going to, or by forming the simple future tense with the verb + s/es.解析:This question tests the candidate’s understanding of the ba sic tenses in English. The answer should clearly define and provide a brief explanation for each of the three main tenses: present, past, and future. The response should also include examples or uses of each tense to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the topic.2、Explain the difference between “lie” and “lay” in English.答案:Lie is an intransitive verb that means to be in a flat or horizontal position. It is also used to mean to rest or to deceive someone. When referring to restingor lying down, the present tense form is “lie” and the past tense form is “lay.”Lay is a transitive verb that means to put something down. It is also used to mean to arrange or to place something in a particular position. The present tense form is “lay” and the past tense form is “laid.”解析:This question assesses the candidate’s knowledge of Englis h verb usage, specifically the difference between the verbs “lie” and “lay.” The answer should clearly define both verbs, distinguish their transitive and intransitive uses, and provide the correct forms for the present and past tenses. It is important to emphasize the difference in meaning and usage between the two verbs to ensure a complete understanding.3、What is the difference between a noun and a verb in English grammar?Answer: In English grammar, a noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea, while a verb is a word that expresses action, occurrence, or state of being.Explanation: Nouns and verbs are two of the most fundamental parts of speech in the English language. Nouns are used to identify or refer to something, such as “book” or “student.” Verbs, on the other hand, describe what the noun is doing or what state it is in, like “read” or “walk.” It’s important to distinguish between the two to form grammatically correct sentences.4、How can you form the past tense of regular verbs in English?Answer: To form the past tense of regular verbs in English, you typically add “-ed” to the base form of the verb.Answer: For example, the base form of the verb “walk” is “walk,” and its past tense is “walked.” Similarly, “play” becomes “played,” and “run” becomes “ran.”Explanation: Regular verbs are those that follow a consistent pattern in their conjugation. The past tense is formed by adding “-ed” to the base form of the verb, which is the form used in the present tense. This process is straightforward and applies to a large number of verbs in the English language.5、Explain the difference between a simple sentence and a compound sentence.Answer: A simple sentence consists of a single independent clause, which contains a subject and a predicate. It expresses a complete thought. On the other hand, a compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses joined by a conjunction, a semicolon, or a comma followed by a conjunction. Each independent clause in a compound sentence expresses a complete thought.Explanation: The main difference between a simple sentence and a compound sentence lies in the number of independent clauses. A simple sentence has only one independent clause, while a compound sentence has two or more. This distinction affects the complexity and structure of the sentences.六、书面表达题(15分)Title: The School of TomorrowIn my ideal school, the classrooms would be bright and airy, equipped with state-of-the-art technology to facilitate interactive learning experiences. Although researchers have long known that the rich live longer than the poor, this education gap is less well documented. And although the average American’s expected span(预期寿命) has been smooth in recent year—and, shockingly, even fell between 2015 and 2017—that of the one-third with a bachelor’s degree has continued to lengthen. This gap in life expectancy is growing, according to new research published in the report of the National Academy of Sciences. Anne Case and Angus Deation ofPrincetonUniversityfound that the lifespans of those with and without a bachelor’s degree started to become different in the 1990s and 2000s. This gap grew even wider in the 2010s.What is the link between schooling and longevity(长寿)? Some argue that better-educated people develop healthier lifestyles: each additional year of study reduces the chances of being a smoker and of being overweight. The better-educated earn more, which in turn is associated with greaterhealth.Ms Case and Mr Deaton argue that changes in labor markets, including the rise of automation and increased demand for highly-educated workers, coupled with the rising costs of employer-provided health care, have decreased the supply of well-paid jobs for those without a degree. This may be contributing to higher rates of alcohol and drug use, suicide and other “deaths of despair”.The authors argued that the educational gap in mortality(致死率) will widenin the wake ofthe covid-19 pandemic. ForAmerica’s overall life expectancy to start climbing again, improvements will be needed across all social groups, not just among the privileged few.4. When did the lifespans of people with and without a degree vary greatly?A. In the 1990s.B. In the 2020sC. In the 2000sD. In the 2010s5. What does the underlined phrase “in the wake of” probably mean ?A. afterB. untilC. beforeD. while7. What is the best title for the text?A. Changes in labor market.B. Quit bad habits by Further studyC. Educated Americans live longer.D. Highly-educated people develop healthier lifestyles.CIvrea is a town in the Piedmont province of northern Italy. It is known for its localcarnival(狂欢节)organized in February. The main part of the carnival is the famous Battle of the Oranges (La battaglia delle arance). The Battle includes nine teams who throw oranges at each other during three carnival days – Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.Oranges were not always used in the battle. In the middle ages people used beans. Twice a year the local feudal lord gave a pot of beans to the poor families who, as sign of rebellion, threw them out of their homes. Later beans became part of carnival as sort of “ammunition” for throwing at people passing by.It is still not known why exactly people started using oranges. It is believed that the origin for this tradition is in the mid 19th century. The legend says that local girls, standing on balconies, started to throw some oranges, together with confetti, lupins(白羽扇豆)and flowers, onto the parade carriages. The girls actually wanted to draw attention of boysin the carriages. Boys “answered” by throwing some objects back at girls. Little battle started that way.Battle of the Oranges got strict rules after the World War II. The battles are organized on town's squares. The battles are fought between teams in carriages (symbolizing local the guards of localtyrant(恶霸)) and the teams walking beside those carriages (symbolizing rebellious people of Ivrea).Oranges for the event are brought from the island of Sicily. The oranges used are of low quality, not suitable for humans. About 270,000 kilograms of oranges are used each year. The carnival ends with a silent march on the night of “Fat Tuesday”. The Carnival "general" says goodbye toeveryone with the phrase "See you next Fat Thursday at 1 p.m."Special prizes are awarded to three best foot teams, three carriages drawn by two horses and three carriages drawn by four horses. Different elements are judged like for example throwing ability, fair play or decoration of carriages.8. The word "ammunition" (paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to________.A. decorationB. bulletsC. advertisementD. presents9. In Battle of the Oranges, the teams walking beside carriages act as ________.A. the Carnival generalB. the local feudal lordC. the rebellious people of IvreaD. the guards of local tyrant(暴君)10. Which of the following statements about Battle of the Oranges is NOT true?A. In the middle ages, people threw beans out of homes as a sign of rebellion.B. Girls throw oranges towards carriages in the parade to attract the attention of boys inside.C. Tons of oranges are used every year to hold the festival.D. People started to throw oranges because they are of low quality and not suitable to eat.11. What is this passage mainly about?A. A traditional activity in an Italian carnivalB. The origin of Battle of the OrangeC. How people enjoy themselves in the Orange CarnivalD. The rules of activities in carnivals in ItalyDThe founder of Earth Day was Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator fromWisconsin. During the late 1960s, Americans witnessed the uninvited side effects of high productivity. Factories and power plants were sending out smoke and industrial waste while Americans were using petrol for their massive(大量的) cars, making air pollution almostsynonymous withthe nation’s development. What moved Senator Nelson to action was the 1969 massive oil spill inCalifornia, the largest in theUnited Statesat that time. The spill proved to be an environmental nightmare as it had a significant effect on marine life, killing about 3,500 sea birds, as well as marine animals such as dolphins, elephant seals and sea lions, fueling public anger. Inspired by the student antiwar movement at that period of time, Nelson found it an appropriate time to direct the energy of the students towards a fight for environmental protection. He decided that it was time to educate the Americans on the need to protect the environment. Thus Earth Day was born in 1970, and publicenvironmentalawareness took centre stage. On 22ndApril 1970, millions of Americans took to the street and thousands of students marched to appeal for a healthy, sustainable environment. written on his or her face. However, you get a wide-eyed denial:"I didn't do it!"Learning to tell the truth, even at the risk of punishment,is an important part of moral (道德)development, and new research suggests it can take seven or more years for kids to get there.Early 2017 Professor Craig E.Smith published a study. He and his workmates chose 48 children between four and nine years of age. They told the kids a story about a boy or girl doing something wrong, such as taking a classmate's toy or candy, and then either lying about the wrongdoing to a parent or confessing (承认)it.In each case, they asked the children,How would the child feel? How would the mother feel? The children's answers were generally divided according to age, which is in agreement with the stolen candy, lying and getting unpunished. They imagined the parent in the study would be angry with the child who confessed. However, the seven-to-nine-year-olds were more likely (可能的)to think the child would feel better confessing the crime and that the parent would have positive (积极的)feelings towards a confessor.Smith says,"Kids of all ages who expect that a parent would feel happy about a child's confession are more likely to tell the truth rather than lie.Reward the honesty even if you feel you must punish the wrong action."He adds, what parents can learn from these studies is to listen calmly without getting angry right away when their child confesses.(1)What does the underlined word "denial" in Paragraph 1mean?A.委屈B.责备C.否认D.拒绝(2)Paragraph 2 mainly tell us .A.kids can't tell "right" from "wrong"B.all the kids are are more likely than younger children to confess to a bad act.B.Younger children are more likely than older kids to confess to a bad act.C.The four-to-five-year-olds would feel better confessing the crimeD.The seven-to-nine-year-olds thought parents would be angry with their confessions.(4)According to Professor Smith, what can parents learn from these studies?A.Parents should at once punish the children who lied.B.Parents should tell children the wrongness of lying.C.Parents should never get angry after their children's confessions.D.Parents should show positive feeling about their children's confessions.19.If you bought some candies months ago but never ate it,how can you tell whether it's still eatable? The easiest way is to check the"expiration(截止)date (EXP)"printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you're likely to throw the candies away. But is that really necessary?According to a new report from the NRDC,tons of food is wasted each year, largely becausepeople don't fully understand what expiration dates,or"use-by dates",actually mean,so they think the food is not safe to eat.Food dating was introduced in 1975 because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up,use-by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions. However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was.But the truth is that these dates aren't related to the danger of food poisoning(中毒).Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, cookies may lose their crunch (松脆的口感),but they are not harmful."It's an unclear subject, the difference between food quality(质量)and food safety,"said Jena Roberts from a US food testing company."Even the workmates in the food factory are not sure about it.This is why the use-by dates must be printed on the covers of products."We hope it can help customers understand the information so that they won't waste a lot of food."Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently. Some are still eatable long after their use-by date while others are not.As a result, food factory officials are now thinking of changing the use-by date to a date which can show when food is most likely to be thrown away.(1)Which of the following pictures can show the meaning of"expiration date (EXP)"?(2)What did the use-by dates show at first according to the passage?A.Food freshness.B.Food quality.C.Food safety.D.Food producer.(3)What can we learn from Paragraph 4?A.Most customers care more about freshness than food safety.B.Most customers fully understand what expiration dates mean.C."Expiration dates"were first used to show when food was likely to go bad.D.Even after their expiration dates pass, some foods are still safe to eat.(4)What is probably the best title for this passage?A.Customers and foodB.Food quality and freshnessC.Food datingD.Expiration dates and food safety.第二节(共1小题,每小题10分,共10分)阅读下列短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的A、B、C、D、E五个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.20.You know you have to read"between the lines"to get the most out of anything.I want to tell you something important during your reading. You shouldn't mark a book which isn't yours.(1)If you think it useful to mark books, you will have to buy them. There are two ways in which one can own a book. The first is to get the right by paying for it,just as you pay for clothes and furniture. But full ownership comes only when you have made it a part of yourself.(2)There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the best sellers--unread and untouched. The second has a great many books.(3)The third has a few dog-eared (翻折的)books, which are marked from front to back. Why is marking a book necessary?First,it keeps you awake. In the second place, reading is thinking.(4)The marked book is usually the thought-through book. Finally, writing helps you remember the thoughts you had,or the thoughts the writer expressed. If reading is to learn anything more than passing time,it must be active. The book you read for pleasure can be read in a state of relaxation, and nothing is lost. But for a great book, rich in ideas, reading must be active.(5)You should come up with an understanding of what you have read.根据材料内容,将A-E五个句子填入文中空缺处,使短文内容完整、正确,并将其标号填写在下面题号后的横线上.A.You can't let your eyes move across the lines.B.But most of them The noise that influences sea animals comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions(爆炸), ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.Decibels(分贝) measured(测量) in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level ofone hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect(效果).Some scientists have planned to set a noise limit(限度) of one hundred and twenty decibels inoceans. They have found that noises at that level can frighten whales(鲸鱼).A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously hurt some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales' ability to exchange informationand find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds disagree to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists think that noise is a greater danger than they believed. It's time for them to take action to help ocean animals.42. Which of the following is not caused by human beings?A. The noise of industrial underwater explosionsB. The noise of ocean drillingC. The sound of underwater earthquakesD. The noise of ship engines43. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?A. The same noise measures differently on land and in the oceanB. Different places may have different types of noisesC. The noises can cause humans to lose hearingD. There are different kinds of natural sounds in the ocean44. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Powerful underwater explosions aren’t harmful to whales’ earsB. Many researchers are against the noise limit of 120 decibelsC. Noises cannot cause whales’ deathD. The noise limit of 120 decibels would hardly influence the industrial research45. According to the passage, we can infer that scientists will probably ______.A. work hard to cut down natural soundsB. stop industrial and scientific research in oceansC. try their best to make no noiseD. protect ocean animals from harmful noises第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
