2016年公共英语三级专项试题与答案阅读理解Part ADirections :Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Markyour answers on ANSWER SHEETl.Text 1It was fifteen past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she was going to work. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her veryfirst job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day.Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before shecould get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked "Smith Enter-prises" , she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no reply. She tapped on the dooragain, but still there was no answer. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound ofvoices, so she opened the door and went in.Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she hadthe interview with Mr. Smith, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an officeat all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. In the front of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter asshe came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others.Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. Smith, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. Smith arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35,so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.46. Marie felt nervous when she knocked at the door because _ .[A] it was her first day in a new job[B] she was a little bit late for work[C] she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong place[D] there was no answer from inside the office47. Marie could hardly recognize the office she went into as .[A] she had been there only once[B] Mr. Smith was not in the office[C] nobody was doing any work[D] the office had a new appearance48. The people in the office suddenly started working because .[A] they saw a stranger in the office[B] their morning break was ended[C] no one wanted to talk to Marie[D] the boss was about to arrive49. We can infer from the text that the employees of the enterprise . .[A] would start their work by listening to a joke. [B] were cold to newcomers[C] were always punctual for work[D] lacked devotion to the company50. The best title for this text would be. .[A] Punctual Like a Clock[B] A Cold Welcome[C] An Unpunctual Manager[D] Better Late Than NeverText 2For most of us, dieting is a frustrating fact of life. With so much conflicting nutritional information about, it can be difficult to tell which weight-loss strategies really work. Let' s start by discounting these confusing myths.1. All calories are created equalWhat you eat, not how much, is the main factor behind weight gain, according to research.Calories from fat pack on the pounds. The reason: during digestion, the body burns many more calories metabolizing protein and carbohydrates than it does metabolizing fat.2. Desserts are tabooCakes, pies and ice cream can sensibly be worked into a diet, the expert says. Moderation is the key. CVt down on other meals if you'll be eating out at a restaurant known for its rich sweets.Or indulge, but take only a few bites.3. Fast foods are forbiddenA plain hamburger on a bun is still a healthful choice. So is grilled chicken or a green salad with low-cal dressing. But watch out for French fries, milkshakes and batter-dipped chicken or fish.4. Fasting is the fastest dietSome studies suggest that drastically reducing calorie intake switches the body into a " starvationmode", which conserves calories and decreases your metabolic rate. The more frequently you deprive yourself of food, the better your body may get at storing calories. So, in the long run, repeated fasting may actually undermine your weight-loss efforts.5. To keep weight off, simply watch what you eat .According to experts, exercise combined with dieting ensures weight Joss better than dieting alone does. Experts also agree that sticking with regular, moderate exercise is more important that occasional vigorous workouts are. Obesity-researcher Kelly Brownell encourages patients to make a series of small physical efforts: taking the stairs instead of the elevator and parking the car far from where you are going and walking. Most important, before getting caught up in dietary myths, let good sense shape your eating habits. Your body will thank you for it.51. It cannot be inferred from the first paragraph that _ .[A] the information about dieting is always- contradictory[B] there are too many weight-loss strategies to choose from[C] dieting is always troublesome to most people[D] people should not believe the ideas of dieting52. One of the elements to gain weight is _ .[A] the amount of the food you eat[B] over sleeping[C] laziness[D] the kind of food you eat53. Which of the following saying is true about dieting?[A] You can't eat sweets.[B] Fast foods are not good.[C] You should not neglect any meals.[D] Fasting is always helpful54. The phrase "starvation mode" means .[A] being very hungry[B] eating what you like when you are hungry[C] weight-loss efforts[D] being ready to eat55. The word "shape" in the last sentence means .[A] break [B] form[C] get rid of [D] changeText 3Labor force is defined as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment,so it includes employees and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country's resources which can be combined with other resources to produce the goods and services required by the community. .Though the size of the workforce relies greatly on the size of the total population, there are several other aspects which also affect it. The age distribution of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce would be lower than if therewere an evenly spread age distribution. If the population grows rapidly from natural increase,i. e. the number of births greatly exceeds the number of deaths, then as a total population increases, the proportion in the workforce declines.Sometimes a population is described as aging, which means that the birth rate is either falling or growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce, there are inadequate numbers of young people entering it to take place of those who are leaving it. The population is top-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate. ' The age distribution of the population has several important influences on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes or hotels, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax receipts are relatively low and either the govemment has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.。

At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect”— conserving heat reflected from the earth and raisingthe world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would mane agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible) Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people neglect the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe t he air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?56. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _______.[ A ] cause widespread damage in the countryside[ B ] affected the entire eastern half of the United States[ C ] had damaged effect on health[ D ] existed merely in urban and industries areas57. As to the greenhouse effect, the author __________.[ A ] share the same view with the scientist.[ B ] is uncertain of its occurrence[ C ] rejects it as being ungrounded[ D ] thinks that it will destroy the world soon58. The word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by _________.[ A] slip into [ B ] make up for[ C ] set up [ D ] catch up with59. It can be concluded that ____________.[ A ] raising the world's temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth.[ B] lowering the world's temperature merely a few degrees would lead major farming areas to disaster.[C] almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade.[D] the world's temperature will remain constant in the years to come.60. This passage is primarily about __________.[A]the greenhouse effect……[ B ] the burning of fossil fuels……[C] the potential effect of air pollution.[ D] the likelihood of a new ice age.Part BDirections:Read the following article in which five people talk about their ideas of dieting. For questions 61 to 65 , -match name of each speaker to one of the statements (A to C ) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.AbbeyYou can always recognize dieters from the sour expression on their faces. They spend most of their time turning their noses up at food. They are forever consulting calorie charts, gazing at themselves in mirrors, and leaping on to weighing-machines in the bathroom. They spend a lifetime fighting a losing battleagainst spreading hips, protruding tummies and double chins. What a miserable lot dieters are!MarlinI began making some dietary and lifestyles changes during my second year of college and have been eating this way ever since. I like the way I feel when I don't eat animal foods so much more than the pleasure I used to get from eating them. I have much more energy; I need less sleep; I feel calmer; I can maintain an ideal body weight without worrying about how much I eat, and I can think more clearly.MaggieDuring my first year of college, I gained forty pounds when I began throwing the javelin. For the next twenty years, I carried all of this extra weight and kidded myself that I was in good shape since that's what I weighed in college. Now that I've lost all that extra weight, I feel great! People say all the time, "Well, how do you live without eating cheeseburgers or this or that?" and I say, "You just don't. It' s not even an option. It's not that hard once you get on it. "BelindaIf you are on a diet, you're always hungry. You can't be hungry and happy at the same time. All the horrible concoctions you eat instead of food leave you permanently dissatisfied. A complete food it may be, but not quite as complete as juicy steak. So at least three times a day you will be exposed to temptation. How miserable to watch others tucking into piles of mouth-watering food while you munch a water biscuit and sip unsweetened lemon juice! And if hunger just proves too much for you, in the end you will lash out and devour five huge guilt-inducing cream cakes at a sitting. Then things will turn out to beeven worse.WoodI went on diet when my doctor told me that my blood pressure tended to be high. Only at that time did I realize the danger of being overweight. Since I began making dietary changes in 1982, eating this way has become increasingly accepted. I don't feel I've lost something after dieting. Instead, I've got something valuable. That is good health. Now match each of the persons to the appropriate statement.Note: there are two extra statements.Statements61. Abbey [A] Being on a diet is a torture.62. Marlin [ B] I feel better with vegetarian food.63. Maggie [C] I lost weight after dieting.[ D] I began dieting for the sake of health.64. Belinda [E] Dieting enables people to enjoy life more.65. Wood [F] Dieting simply causes endless worries.[ G] Dieting does more harm than good to one' s health.Section IV Writing (40 minutes)You should write your responses to both parts on ANSWER SHEET 2.Part A66. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET. Text 1 Isabel has turned down two job offers in the past year. In 2006, she started her own consulting practice, but by 2008, most of her larger clients had to drop her because of the economy. In 2011, she was undertaking irregular assignments and knew she needed a steady job. The first job she considered was Director of HR for a company in Utah. After the initial interviews, she felt the job fit her except for the location. Still, she flew west to meet the hiring manager. The hiring manager explained that Isabel was the top candidate for the job but that, before she continued with the process, she should better understand the firm's culture. She directed Isabel to several videos of the company's CEO, who regularly appeared in front of the company in costume as part of morale building exercises and expected his senior leaders to do the same. "Even though I was desperate for a job, I knew I couldn't do that," Isabel says. She called the recruiter to turn down the job and explained that she didn't feel there was a cultural fit. A few months later, she interviewed for another job: a director of employee relations at a local university. After several interviews, the hiring manager told her the job was hers if she wanted it. The job had many positives : it was a low-stress environment, it offered great benefits, and the university was an employee-friendly place. But the job was relatively junior despite the title and Isabel worried it wouldn't be challenging enough. Finally, she turned it down. "It would be great to have a paycheck and great benefits but I would definitely have trouble sleeping at night," she says. In both cases, she was frank with the hiring managers about why she wasn't taking the jobs."In the past, it felt like dating, I was worried about hurting people's feelings," she says. However, they appreciated her frankness and thanked her for her honesty. She says it was hard to turn down the jobs and it was a risk for her financially but she felt she had to. 26. In 2011, Isabel_______ A. did consulting now and then B. found a job close to her home C. refused several job interviews D. ran a successful consulting firm 27. Isabel turned down the first job offer mainly because of its_______ A. CEO B. culture C. location D. recruiter 28. Isabel was dissatisfied with the second job due to its_______ A. junior rifle B. low benefits C. Environment D. lack of challenge 29. Isabel believed that her rejection of the jobs was______ A. harmful B. surprising C. justifiable D. troublesome 30. According to Isabel, it is important to______ A. look for jobs with little stress B. look for jobs with great benefits C. be truthful in declining job offers D. be cautious in declining job offers Text 2 You do not usually get something for nothing. Now, a new study reveals that the evolution of an improved learning ability could come at a particularly high price: an earlier death. Past experiments have demonstrated that it is relatively easy .through selective breeding to make rats, honey bees and-that great favourite of researchers-fruit flies a lot better at learning. Animals that are better learners should be competitive and, thus, over time, come to dominate a population by natural selection. But improved learning ability does not get selected amongst these animals in the wild. No one really understands why. Tadeusz Kawecki and his colleagues at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland have measured the effects of improved learning on the lives of fruit flies. The flies were given two different fruits as egg-laying sites. One of these was laced with a bitter additive that could be detected only on contact. The flies were then given the same fruit but without an additive. Flies that avoided the fruit which had been bitter were deemed to have learned from their experience. Their children were reared and the experiment was run again. After repeating the experiment for 30 generations, the children of the learned flies were com- pared with normal flies. The researchers report in a forthcoming edition of Evolution that although learning ability could be bred into a population of fruit flies, it shortened their lives by 15%. When the researchers compared their learned flies to colonies selectively bred to live long lives, they found even greater differences. Whereas learned flies had reduced their life spans, the long-lived flies learned less well than even average flies. The authors suggest that evolving an improved learning ability may require a greater investment in the nervous system which takes resources away from processes that delay ageing. However, Dr. Kawecki thinks the effect could also be a by-product of greater brain activity increasing the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which can increase oxidation in the body and damage health. No one knows whether the phenomenon holds true for other animals. So, biologists, at least, still have a lot to learn. 31. Past experiments prove selective breeding can make animals better_______ A. Commanders B. Competitors C. survivors D. learners 32. In this experiment, scientists observed that________ A. some flies avoided the fruit without an addictive B. some flies preferred the fruit with an addictive C. the eggs of the flies were not damaged D. the impact on the flies did not last long 33. The forthcoming report says that_______ A. long-lived flies are better at laying eggs B. long-lived flies are poorer in learning C. learned flies have a relatively long life D. learned flies live as long as average ones 34. According to Dr.Kawecki, greater brain activity______ A. reduces oxygen consumption B. regulates the nervous system C. speeds up the ageing process D. stabilizes the ageing process 35. We learn from the text that_______ A. the research findings need to be tested further B. biologists are doing similar research on other animals C. the animal world usually follows the same universal laws D. biologists are applying their findings to other areas 真题答案: 26.A 27.B 28.D 29.A 30.C 31.D 32.A 33.B 34.C 35.A Part B Directions: Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talk about tipping in a restaurant. For questions 36-40, match the name of each person to one of the statements (A- G) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET. Richard: I've always viewed tipping as a way of saying "thank you" to the one who serves me. I believe what is bad is when no tip is left at all. The better the service, the higher the tip. Unless the service is literally perfect, I never tip more than 10% of the bill. Much like the harder teachers in school, I never give an easy “A.”My assessment is honest. Daniel: A tip is a "thank you," but in truth, a tip is payment for service. 20% is a standard tip. Servers deserve it for their hard work. Restaurants will never pay more for labor unless they are forced to do so by new laws. Tips make up about 97% of a server's total income. Those tips are needed for survival. So, before servers are paid a living wage, tip 20%.。

公共英语三级阅读试题与解析

公共英语三级阅读试题与解析2016年公共英语三级阅读试题与解析试题(一)Relationship Bankingone of the more dissembles trends in the financial-service industry in recent times has been the adoption of programs designed to encourage more personalized relationships between an institution’s employees and its clients, particularly those who are major depositors. The expression most commonly used to describe the type of program is “relationship banking.” A good definition is provided in the 1985 book Marketing Financial Services:In relationship banking the emphasis is on establishing a long-term, multiple-service relationship; on satisfying the totality of the client’s financial need; on minimizing the need or desire of clients to splinter their financial business among various institutions.Implicit within any definition of relationship banking is recognition that the financial-service requirements of one individual or relationship group. A successful relationship-banking program is, therefore, independent individual in a large part on the development of a series of financial-service “package,” each designed to meet the needs of identifiably homogeneous groups.Another dimension of relationship banking is the development of highly personalized relationships between employee and client. In most financial institutions today the client is serviced by any employee who happens to be free at the time, regardless of the nature of the transaction. personalizedrelationships are therefore difficult to establish. In a full relationship-banking program, however, the client knows there is one individual within the institution who has intimate knowledge of the client’s requirements and preferences regarding complex transactions. over time, the client develops a high level of confidence in this employee. In short, a personalized relationship evolves between client and employee.1. SECTION III Reading Comprehension Part A(40 minutes) Text 1 46、根据下列材料,请回答46-60题: In 1997, 25 Japanese citizens, all older than 60, launched Jeeba (the name means "old man and old woman") to make senior-friendly products. They knew they were making history when they coined their company motto : "Of the elderly, by the elderly and for the elderly. " They do not hire young people, and the oldest of their workers is 75. Firms run by senior citizens are still a rarity, in Japan and worldwide. But the elderly have numbers on their side. Healthier and longer-living seniors, born immediately after World War II,are reaching retirement age in huge numbers all over the developed world. Extremely low birthrates in those same countries mean there are far fewer young workers to take their place. One likely con-sequence is now clear: shrinking work forces. While the streamlining effects of international competition are focusing attention on the need to create and keep good jobs, those fears will eventually give way to worries about the growing short-age of young workers. One unavoidable solution: putting older people back to work, whether they like it or not. Indeed, advanced economies like those of Finland and Denmark have already raised their retirement ages. Others are under severe pressure to follow suit, as both the European Com-mission and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development have recently warned their members that their future prosperity depends on a growing contribution from the elderly. Whether these changes are good or bad news to workers depends on whether they anticipate retirement with eagerness or dread. In the United States, half of working-age Americans now expect to work into their 70s, whether by financial necessity or by lifestyle choice, according to a new study by Putnam Investments. Contrary to still widespread assumptions, there is very little hard evidence to suggest that com-panies cannot stay competitive with a rising share of older workers. At 13ritish hardware chain B&Q, its "elder worker" stores in Manchester and Exmouth were 18 percent more profitable than its regular outlets--due in part, the company says, to six times less employee turnover and 60 per-cent less shoplifting and breakage. 46、Jeeba' s difference from a conventional company mainly lies in A.the age of its employees B.the number of its owners C.the quality of its products D.the scope of its operations 47、 In the developed world, compared with young people, the elderly A.are better at business B.are greater in number C.have healthier lifestyles D.have more job opportunities 48、 According to the writer, in the current situation companies are faced with the tough task of A.creating good positions B.employing retired workers C.filling vacant positions D.replacing unskilled workers 49、 For future prosperity, many European countries will have to A.increase the number of young workers B.offer many senior-friendly jobs C.improve services for seniors D.raise their retirement ages 50、 B&Q' s "elder worker" stores are mentioned to show that the employment of older work-ers A.does not reduce a company' s competitiveness B.does not affect older workers' lifestyle Choices C.is not a usual practice among competitive firms D.is not good news to those who are eager to retire Text 2 根据下列材料,请回答51-65题: Here' s how I want to watch the 2014 Winter Olympics. I want to go to a Web site to see any event I want, whenever I want to watch it, on whatever screen I choose. I' 11 gladly pay. The technology exists to make this happen today. Yet nearly two decades after the introduction of the World Wide Web, this remains a fantasy. NBC, which broadcasted the Vancouver Olympics in the United States, wouldn' t put videos on its Web site until they had been shown on prime-time TV. So Americans had the weird experience of learning from a news report during the day that something fantastic had just happened, and then having to wait until that night' s broadcast to see it. Bloggers complained, but NBC wouldn' t give way. Its research shows that people like me, who want to watch the Olympics online, represent only 7 percent of the total audience. The other, bigger concern is: the Internet doesn' t deliver any money. Advertisers remain willing to pay big money to show their commercials on prime-time TV. But on the Internet? Not so much. So NBC clings to the old way of doing things. As it sees it, the prime-time show is the most important. To make matters worse, NBC was already expecting to lose $ 250 million on the 2010 Vancouver Games. Good luck persuading it to invest in a risky Web project. It's easy to blame the network executives. But the NBC guys and their like are only doing what makes sense. They're going where the money is. That needs to change. Yes, selling reporting of Olympic events over the Internet would drain away some of the prime-time audience, but my sense is many of the online subscribers would still watch the prime-time show. And over time, the subscription dollars could become a substantial rev- enue stream. Instead of viewing the Internet as a threat to prime time, the TV networks should see the Web as a way to sell even more of their product to a small but passionate subset of their audi-ence. I' m hoping that by 2014, that will have changed. 51、 According to the writer, watching the Olympics online as one likes A.is technologically impossible B.is still denied to the audience C.has been a dream for 20 years D.will no longer be free in 2014 52、 We learn that what Americans saw about the Vancouver Olympics A.was unavailable online B.differed from the news C.seemed weird to them D.was first shown on TV 53、 Bloggers complained about NBC' s A.neglect of those in the minority B.excessive online advertisements C.delay in providing videos online D.limited reporting on sports news 54、 After the 2010 Vancouver Games, NBC is likely to A.improve its prime-time show B.continue its current practice C.raise its price for advertising D.try its luck in a web program 55、 The writer thinks the TV networks should view the Web as a potential to help them to A.make dramatic profits B.develop new products C.satisfy their subscribers D.divide prime-time revenues Text 3 根据下列材料,请回答56-70题: One important thing during the pre-Christmas rush at our house was the arrival of my daughter' s kindergarten report card. She got high praise for her reading, vocabulary and overall en-thusiasm. On the other hand, we learnt that she has work to do on her numbers and facility with the computer, though the detailed handwritten report her teachers prepared is absent of any words that might be interpreted as negative in describing her efforts. A number system indicates how she' s measuring up in each area without any mention of passing or failing. All of which seems to make my daughter' s school neither fish nor fowl when it comes to the debate over the merits of giving formal grades to kids. At one level, the advantages and disadvanta-ges are obvious. A grade system provides a straightforward standard by which to measure how your child is progressing at school--and how he or she is getting on compared to other children. But as writer Sue Ferguson notes, "Grades can deceive. " The aim should be "to measure learning, not simply what a student can recall on a test. " The two aren' t the same--and if you doubt that as an adult, ask yourself whether you could sit down without any preparation and still pass those high-school-level examinations. If you' re old enough, you' ve lived through this debate before. At one time, it was considered unfair to put children in direct competition with one another if it could be avoided. The inten-tion behind tha.t may have been good, but it ignored the fact that competition, and the will to come out on top, are essential components of the human condition. This time around, educators working with a no-grades approach are emphasizing different rea-sons. The thing is, that approach is much more commonplace in the adult workplace than is the tra-ditional pass-fail system we place on our children. Many workplaces conduct regular employee eval-uations. There are usually fairly strict limits to what an employer can tell an employee in those eval-uations-and even then, negative evaluations can be challenged by the employee. No matter where you sit in the debate over the grade system, then, the real question is this: if it' s so good for kids, why isn't that also true for adults? 56、The school report indicates that the writer' s daughter cks interest in her school work B.ranks among the best at language C.has some trouble with her handwriting D.needs to improve in math and computer skills 57、 We can learn that the girl' s school tries to deliver the report A.in a positive way B.in a scientific way C.in an attractive way D.in an enthusiastic way 58、 Sue Ferguson seems dissatisfied with the grade system for its focus on A.the process of getting the knowledge B.the capability of memorizing for the test C.the procedure of measuring learning D.the standard of comparing schools 59、 The writer would agree that cutting children off from competition is A.fit for human development B.fit for their age and experience C.against a key part of human nature D.out of consideration for children 60、 It can be learned that today's educators supporting the no-grades approach insist that A.kids be allowed to challenge the negative evaluations B.the traditional teacher-student relationship be changed C.the evaluation system for kids be similar to that for adults D.strict rules be set up in evaluating school children SECTION III Reading Comprehension Part B(40 minutes) 61、根据下列材料,请回答61-65题: Directions: Read the texts from a magazine in which five people voice their different opinions in response to an article on the issue of praising. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person (61 to 65) to one of the statements ( A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET1. Mike : Praise often and sincerely--it' s as simple as that. Employees want to feel needed and appreci-ated. By offering sincere praise with examples about what they did right, you' ll go far in creating an energetic team. Meanwhile, I don't agree with the assertion that "to focus on what needs im-proving isn' t good management. " In fact, it' s the balance of praise along with constructive criti-cism that drives employees to work smarter and reach higher. Frank: This article makes a valid point that needs to be understood, especially for the new generation of workers, my generation. We don' t see ourselves as parts in the machine to be put in the dark to work. My generation needs respect in return from our employer, we need to feel appreciated beyond just a pay check, it' s the difference between being fulfilled at our career and being sad at our job. Joyce : One skill missing in today's workplace is the ability to build effective business relationships. At the core of that relationship is the need for consistent feedback. "How am I doing?" is a ques-tion that should be answered consistently. When you tell an employee once a year what is needed to improve, you have not done your job as a leader--build skills, provide feedback and help the em-ployee grow and develop. Ellen: I don' t see a problem with praising employees when it' s truly deserved ( insincere praise is an entirely different story). It' s a cost-free "benefit", if you will, in that it allows employees to see that their efforts are both noticed and valued. In the work world there are always people available to tell that you are doing something wrong and far too few occasions when employees are told that they've done something right! Diana: Praise what the employee did. Be specific about why it was helpful. An employee who contin-ually earns your praise also deserves your attention as to how else to reward their behavior. Mean-ingful praise encourages people beyond anything else. Written comments are available for later re-view. They give them confidence that they can "do it again. " I never regretted praising an employ-ee who deserved it but often kicked myself for missing an opportunity. Now match the name of each person (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement Note: there are two extra statements. Statements [A]Praise combined with criticism is helpful. [B] Praise can bring about many kinds of desired behavior. [C] Employees may feel it hard to accept.insincere praise. [D] Let employees know exactly for what they are praised. [E] In my opinion, we are not generous enough to give praise. [F] Employees need helpful advice on a regular basis. [G] Money alone cannot guarantee a sense of career fulfillment for me. 61、 Mike 62、 Frank 63、 Joyce 64、 Ellen 65、 Diana 参考答案及精析 第三部分阅读理解 Part A Text 1 参考译⽂: 1997年,年龄均超过60岁的25名⽇本市民发起了⼀场Jeeba运动(Jeeba意为⽼年男性与⼥性),⽣产适合于⽼年⼈使⽤的产品。

Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Text 1A former town hall worker made legal history last week when she was awarded 67,000 pounds for stress brought on by her work. The ruling made Beverley Lancaster the first person to get their employer to accept legal responsibility for stress-related personal injury in a British court. It is likely to start a flood of other worker’s claims; Mrs. Lancaster’s union already has 7,000 stress-related cases on its books. The 44-year-old mother of two started a legal case against Birmingham City Council after falling ill while working as a troubleshooter in a neighborhood housing office. Dealing with rude and abusive members of the public pushed her into periods of gloom and she suffered anxiety, Birmingham county court heard. Mrs. Lancaster joined the council at 16, working her way up from junior clerk to senior draughtswoman. Her problems began when she was promoted to housing officer in Sutton Oldfield. "With no continuity, a constant high workload and little clerical support, I found it difficult to switch from one problem or situation to another," she said. "My concentration swung and I suffered sleepless nights. It made me feel like I was in a hole with no key to open the door. I would break down in tears. I was being in paperwork and at times my mind would just go blank."In awarding compensation of 67,491 pounds, assistant recorder Frances Kirkham said she understood the position of troubleshooter was very different from Mrs. Lancaster’s precious job. She rejected claims from the council that Mrs. Lancaster would be able to go back to her former profession, saying she accepted that the possibility of future work would be less capacity. After the hearing Mrs. Lancaster said she was relieved and pleased. She added, "I hope this will act as a warning to employers. Everything I did was right. The council made promises to me and they failed me. I felt isolated, let down, that I was not good enough, not wanted." The payout, the first of its kind to be decided in a county court, covers loss of wages and future loss of earnings.A spokesman for Birmingham City Council said action had been taken by the authority to review its staff and management procedures.46.Mrs. Beverley Lancaster was awarded 67,000 pounds for ______.A.illness caused by her jobB.her successful and good luckC.the courage she showed in courtD.the amount of work she did47.Mrs. Beverley Lancaster took legal action against the city council because ______.A.it refused to award her for her jobB.she had to deal with rude members of the councilC.it was responsible for her problemsD.it denied her any clerical support48.The Lancaster case shows that employees have the right to get compensation if they ______.A.are given work that they are unable to doB.suffer mental injury caused by their workC.are forced to do work that they don’t likeD.feel isolated, let down and extremely anxious49.It can be inferred that ______.A.Mr Lancaster will find a better paid job in the futureB.the job of draughtswoman is very demandingC.the court may hear more stress-related casesD.the job of housing officer causes mental injuries50.If Birmingham City Gouncil plans to move an employee to a new job, it will definitely make sure that ______.A.there is continuity between the two jobsB.no complaints from the employee occurC.the amount of work is reduced for the new jobD.the employee is prepared for any mental problemsText 2Life learning (sometimes called un-schooling or self-directed learning) is one of those concepts that are almost easier to explain by saying what it isn’t, than what it is. And that’s probably because our own schooled backgrounds have convinced usthat learning happens only in a dedicated building on certain days, between certain hours, and managed by a specially trained professional.Within that schooling framework, no matter how hard teachers try and no matter how good their textbooks, many bright students get bored, many slower students struggle and give up or lose their self-respect, and most of them reach the end of the process unprepared to enter into society. They have memorized a certain body of knowledge long enough to rush back the information on tests, but they haven’t really learnt much, at least of the official curriculum.Life learners, on the other hand, know that learning is not difficult, that people learn things quite easily if they’re not compelled and forced, if they see a need to learn something, and if they are trusted and respected enough to learn it on their own timetable, at their own speed, in their own way. They know that learning cannot be produced in us and that we cannot produce it in others—no matter what age and no matter whether we’re at school or at home.Life learning is independent of time, location or the presence of teacher. It does not require mom or dad to teach, or kids to work in workbooks at the kitchen table from 9 to noon from September to June. Life learning is learner-driven. It involves living and learning— in and from the real world. It is about exploring, questioning, experimenting, making messes, taking risks without fear of making mistakes, being laughed at and trying again.Furthermore, life learning is about trusting kids to learn what they need to know and about helping them to learn and grow in their own ways. It is about providing positive experiences that enable children to understand the world and their culture and to interact with it.51.It is implied in the text that it is hard to ______.A.carry life learning thoughB.tell the nature of life learningC.learn without going to schoolD.find a specially trained teacher52.According to the author, the schooling framework often ______.A.produces slow students with poor memoriesB.ignores some parts of the official curriculumC.fails to provide enough knowledge about lifeD.gives little care to the quality of teaching materials53.Life learners recognize that learning will not be difficult if they are ______.A.clear about why to learnB.careful to make a time tableC.able to respect other peopleD.cautious about any mistakes54.According to the author, life learning ______.A.could prevent one from running risksB.could be a road full of trials and errorsC.makes a kid independent of his parentsD.teaches a kid how to avoid being scorned55.Through life learning, children ______.A.will grow without the assistance from parentsB.will learn to communicate with the real worldC.will be driven to learn necessary life knowledgeD.will be isolated from the negative side of societyText 3To find Kim Hyung Gyoon’ s office in Samsung’s R&D complex, just follow the baskets of dirt clothes. No, Kim is not running the company laundry. As chief of Samsung’s Washing & Cleaning Technology Group(WCTG), he’s the man behind a new washing machine that deposits tiny silver particles(small pieces of things) —about 1 / 10,000 the thickness of a human hair— onto clothes to make them germ-and-odor-free without the need of hot water. The device represents the first mass-produced application of this tape of nanotechnology — the science of very small structures —to home appliances. "In summer of 2002, I asked everyone in the office to take off their socks," says Kim. "took one sock from each person and placed it in a regular washing machine; the others were washed in a machine with the Ag+ Nano System. The next day, I asked everyone to check the odor of their socks after a day’s wear. One began produce a strong unpleasant smell, and the other was odorless."Kim says he came up with the idea five years ago while on a business trip to Japan, where he learned of a brand of socks that retained their freshness even after many days of unwashed wear and tear. Tiny sticks of sliver with germ-killing chemicals were woven into the fabric. When he got back to Seoul, Kim applied the principle to washing machines.According to the Korea Testing & Research Industry, Samsung’s device kills 99.9% of germs. Kim says garments stay germ-free for up to a month after being laundered. The Ag+ Nano device went on sale in March 2003 and costs around $1,150; the revolutionary technology is also being used in Samsung’s refrigerators and air conditioners. No wonder: consumers seem to a little sliver in their spin cycles. Since Samsung’s nano-armed products were first launched, they have brought in an estimated $779 million in revenue. Overall, nanotech has been one of science’s fastest-growing fields in recent years, with potential applications in fields as diverse as energy production and toothpaste manufacture. They settled in at a comfortable East Slide café and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table. “Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?”the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.“They began telling me all the news ofMississippi,”Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.”Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’”Sitting on a soda in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.“I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story. 5.What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?A. Two strangersjoined her.B. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.8.What can people do attheapple events?A .Attend experts’lectures.B .Visit fruit-loving families.C .Plantfruit trees inan orchard.D. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morningpapers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discov ering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think o f you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails,Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mai led” list for six months. One of his first finds was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or thatinspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”12 .Whatdothe classic rulesmentionedinthetext apply to?A.News reports.B. 2016年公共英语三级考试精选练习题及答案3Text 3Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction. Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living . Some stay long at a job and learn to like it ;others quite from one to another looking for something to suit them, the young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectation. Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities. The reason behind all this confusion is that therenever has been a proper vocational guidance in our educational institution. It wasn’t easy getting hired. But once you were there, I found, you were in.Globe jobs were for life-guaranteed until retirement. For 15 years I had prospered there — moving from an ordinary reporter to foreign correspondent and finally to senior editor. I would have a lifetime of security is I struck with it. Instead, I had made a decision to leave. I entered my boss’s office. Would he rage? I wondered. He had a famous temper. “Matt, we have to have a talk,” I began awkwardly. “I came to the Globe when I was twenty-four. Now I’m forty. There’s a lot I want to do in life. I’m resigning.” “To another paper?” he asked. I reached into my coat pocket, but didn’t say anything. I handed him a letter that explained everything. It said that I was leaving to start a new media company. We were at a rare turning point in history. I want ed to be directly engaged in the change. “I’m glad for you,” he said, quite out of my expectation. “I just came from a board of directors meeting and it was seventy-five percent discouraging news. Some of that we can deal with. But much of it we can’t, ” he went on. “I wish you all the luck in the world,”he concluded. “And if it doesn’t work out, remember, your star is always high here.”Then I went out of his office, walking through the newsroom for more good-byes. Everybody was saying congratulations. Everybody —even though I’d be risking all on an unfamiliar venture: all the financial security I had carefully built up.Later, I had a final talk with Bill Taylor, chairman and publisher of the Boston Globe. He had turned the Globe into a billion-dollar pr operty. “I’m resigning, Bill, ”I said. He listened while I gave him the story. He wasn’t looking angry or dismayed either. This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when your labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, Peter! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that Peter is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit if better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. M aybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important to do early in the day, risebefo re your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.51. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ________.[A] he is a lazy person.[ B ] he refuses to follow his own energy cycle.[C] he is not sure when his energy is low.[D] he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening.52. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?[AJ Unawareness of energy cycles.[B] Familiar monologues.[C]A change in a family member’s energy cycle.[D] Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.53. If one wants to work efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should __________.[A]change his energy cycle[B] overcome his laziness[C]get up earlier than usual[D] go to bed earlier54. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will __________.[A] help to keep your en ergy for the day’s work.[B] help you to control your temper early in the day[C] enable you to concentrate on your routine work[D] keep your energy your energy cycle under control all day55. furniture from our house in Sussex to myson's flat in central London, I should have paid a man to do it for me, but foolishly confident in my driving abi ity, I decided to hire a van and drive it myself. It was a Ford Transit 280, long and wide; you couldn't see out of the back. You never really knew how close you were to anything else on the road.Reversing in my home yard, l crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. At least I owned the shed.I loaded up the fumiture and set out.By now it was rush hour.My nerves broke down,as l steered the huge van through ever-shifting lanes, across oncoming vehicles, between distances ofbuses, at last to Charlotte Street. Here, I found an available parking space. As I reversed into it, I noticed three people at a pavement cafe waving to me.I got out, trembling violently, like one who has just endured a stormy Atlantic crossing.“You've shifted the car parked behind you three feet,”they said, and it belonged to a disabled person.I examined the car. There were white scratches along is front bumper. It bore a disabled sign. So,now I was a bad driver and a badman.Under the stem gaze of the three, I left an apologetic note on the damaged car's windscreen, giving my phone number.I unloaded the fumiture, dripping with sweat.Wanting only to escape the monster,I drove the van back to its base on the Edgware Road.On arrival, the hire man told me I must fill it up with petrol before retuming it.“Just charge me,”I cried, sill shaking with fear.He gazed at me with understanding. No doubt he'd witnessed others in this state before.“How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive her back?”he asked. He danced the great van through the traffic so casually that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful.26.The notice the signs:you forget people' s names and the teapot occasionallytums up in the fridge. There is a good reason why our memories start to let us down.At this stage of lie,we are steadily losing brain cells in critical areas. This is not too much of a problem at fist; even in old age, the brain is flexible enough to compensate. At some point, though, the losses start to make themselves felt.Clearly, not everyone ages in the same way.so what's the difference between a happy,intelli-gent old person and a forgetful, bad-tempered granny? And can we improve our chances of becoming the former?Exercise can certainly help.Numerous studies have shown that gentle exercise three times a week can improve concentration and abstract reasoning in older people, perhaps by encouraging the growth of new brain cells.Exercise also helps steady our blood sugar. As we age, our blood sugar control worsens, which causes a large increase in blood sugar levels. This can affect an area that helps form memories.Since physical activity helps control blood sugar, getting out and about could reduce these peaks and, potentially, improve your memory.Coordination training could also help.Studies have shown that specifically targeting motor control and balance improves learning function in 60 to80-year-olds.“Brain training”was once considered strange, but a study concludes that computerised brain exercises can improve memory and attention in the over65s.Importantly, these changes were large enough that participants reported significant improvements in everyday activities, such as remembe-ring names or following conversations in noisy restaurants.Avoiding the complaints is even casier. In fact, your brain is doing all it can to ensure a con tented retirement.By 65, we are much better at increasing the experience of positive emotion, says Florin Dolcos, an euro biologist at the University of Alberta in Canada. In experiments, he found that people over the ageof60t ended to remember fewer emotionally negative photographs com pared with positive ones than younger people.31.It is usual for retired people to have[A] a distant memory [B] a terrible memory[C] a painful memory [D] a changeable memory32.According to the text, mild exercise help sold people[A] avoid a bad temper [B] feel happy with their life[C] practise creative thinking [D] improve their mental ability33.It isle a med from the text that high blood sugar may[A] encourage braincells to grow [B] result in poor concentration[C] affect physical activity [D] lead to memory loss34.Through“brain training,”old people can[A] improve their physical balance[B] cope better with daily activities[C] cooperate better with eachother[D] become skillful at using computers35.According to Florin Do lcos, when it comes to retirement, most old people tend to feel[A] satisfied [B] depressed [C] hopeful [D] regretfulPart BDirections:Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talked about advertisements aimed at children. For questions 36-40, match the name of each person to one of the statements(A-G) given below, Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Anne:I really don't think that it's moral to target children with advertisements, as they are not yet able to distinguish advertising from actual programming in the way adults can. This means that ad-vertising aimed at children is misleading and unfair. It is also clearly effective, as otherwise adver-tisers would not spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year targeting children who are not yet able to resist their sales pitch.John:Advertising aimed at children brings negative social consequences, as much of it is for food and drinks that are unhealthy.Encouraging naive children to consume so much fatty, sugary and salty food is morally wrong because it creates overweight, unhealthy youngsters, with bad eating habits that will be with them for life.Society may pay a high price in terms of the extra medical care such children will eventually require.Lily:I think banning advertisements is a severe restriction upon freedom of panies should be able to tel the pubic about any legal products, or innovation will be restricted and new companies will find it hard to market their products successfully in the face of established rivals.Children also have a human right to receive information from a wide range of sources and make up their own minds about it.Ross:Children naturally like foods that are rich in fats and sugar. They give them the energy they need to play energetically and grow healthily. It is true that eating only such foods is bad for people, but this is a problem of bad parenting rather than the fault of advertising. If advertising to children were banned, then governments would not be able to use this means of promoting healthy cating.Julia:Children are not naive innocents, but clever consumers who can distinguish at a very young age between advertisements and programs, and understand that advertisements can be misleading. This essential learning process is, in fact, developed through exposure to advertisements, It is a so assisted by responsible parenting that does not just leave bright ceiling lights and used dim bulbs. In a word, he went to great lengths to make his house completely dark. Two weeks later, the doctor paid a visit to the millionaire to enquire about his recovery. To the doctor's astonishment, everything in the house was made dark and dull.“Just look at allthis,”said the millionaire proudly.“Not the lowest beam of light inside.I spent $ 5,000on the changes to the house.I followed your advice faithfully.”“You sure did,”replied the doctor, buthe found it hard to say that it was a matter of plain commonsense that the millionaire could have bought a pair of sunglasses, which would cost much less, rather than spending so much money making the house darker, in order to avoid bright light.。
