What Is Halloween?
O que é o Halloween?
Halloween falls every year on 31st October. It is also known traditionally as ‘All Hallows’ Eve’ by Christians. This is because it falls the day before All Saint’s Day (1st November), when some people think about and pray for the people they know who have died. Not everyone agrees that Halloween should be celebrated. Some people think that it celebrates evil spirits and witchcraft.
To stay safe it is important that children always take an adult with them if trick or treating.

As abóboras esculpidas são chamadas “jack-o'-lanterns”. Antigamente, elas eram mantidas fora das casas na noite de Halloween, pois pensava-se que espantaria os espí ritos malignos. As lanternas eram originalmente esculpidas em nabos na Irlanda. Mais tarde, muitos irlandeses mudaram-se para a Amé rica. Eles queriam fazer lanternas mas nã o conseguiam encontrar nabos suficientes, entã o esculpiram abó boras. Hoje as pessoas divertem-se esculpindo todo o tipo de imagens em abó boras e usando-as como decoraç õ es divertidas.
Hoje em dia, as pessoas divertem-se mascarando, como gatos pretos, feiticeiros etc. Elas depois vã o para festas ou outros eventos.

Carved pumpkins are called jack-o’-lanterns. In the olden days, they were kept outside homes on the night of Halloween, as they were thought to scare away evil spirits. The lanterns were originally carved out of turnips in Ireland. Later, lots of Irish people went to live in America. They wanted to make lanterns but couldn’t find enough turnips, so carved pumpkins instead. Today people have fun carving all sorts of pictures into the pumpkins and using them as fun decorations.
Apple Bobbing

Apple bobbing is a game often played on Halloween.
A large container is filled with water, with apples floated on the surface. Players then try to catch an apple, using only their teeth. They are not allowed to use their hands to help them.
Halloween acontece todos os anos a 31 de outubro. També m é conhecido tradicionalmente como 'All Hallows' Eve 'pelos cristã os. Isso é acontece no dia anterior ao Dia de Todos os Santos (1 de novembro), quando algumas pessoas pensam e rezam pelas pessoas que conhecem que morreram. Nem todos concordam que o Halloween deve ser celebrado. Algumas pessoas pensam que comemora espí ritos malignos e bruxaria.
Trick or Treating

Children dress up in costumes and travel from house to house to ask “trick or treat?” They then hope for treats such as chocolate, sweets or money.
Apple bobbing é um jogo comum de Halloween. Um grande recipiente é enchido com á gua, com maç ã s a flutuar na superfície. Os jogadores tentam apanhar uma maç ã , usando apenas os dentes. Nã o é permitido usarem as mã os para ajudá -los.
Today people have fun dressing up in costumes, as black cats, wizards etc. They then go to parties or other events.

Antigamente, algumas pessoas pensavam que se elas se mascarassem de maneira assustadora, isso impediria os maus espí ritos de incomodá -los.
