It was so much fun trying all the different flavors and learning about the different cultures they came from.One of my favorite activities was when we had to research a country and create a poster presentation about it. I chose to do mine on Japan, and I learned so many fascinating things! Did you know that Japan has over 100 active volcanoes? And that sushi was originally invented as a way to preserve fish? I made sure to include those cool facts on my poster.We also learned about different customs and traditions from around the world. For example, in some cultures, it's considered rude to show the bottom of your feet to someone, while in others, it's polite to take off your shoes before entering a home. It's so interesting to see how different cultures have different ways of doing things.But my absolute favorite part of this unit was when we got to try our hand at some basic phrases in different languages. Ms. Johnson taught us how to say "hello," "thank you," and "goodbye" in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, and even a few words in Swahili! We're definitely going to be best friends by the time this is all over.I also joined the school choir this year. We just had our first rehearsal yesterday and I really liked it. The choir teacher, Ms. Kelly, is so fun and energetic. She had us playing all these crazy warm-up games with our voices. We had to pretend to be sirens one minute, then sound like lawnmowers or bags of chocolate chips being shaken up. It was hilarious watching everyone make those goofy noises!After we warmed up, we started learning our first song that we'll be performing at the school's holiday concert in a few months. It's a big multi-part arrangement of "Jingle Bells." It sounds really pretty but it's also quite hard since there are so many complicated harmonies. I'm a little nervous I won't be able to get it perfect in time.Luckily, Ms. Kelly put me in the soprano section which has the highest and simplest part. I may be small, but I can hit those high notes no problem! We sopranos just need to listen carefullyand match the alto and tenor parts which are doing the trickier melodies. I'll make sure to practice hard so I don't let my section down.I've also joined the chess club this year too. Can you believe they have a chess club at an elementary school? I thought it would be filled with tiny nerdy kids, but there are actually a lot of cool people in it. My friend Carlos is the one who got me interested in chess over the summer. His dad taught him how to play and now Carlos is actually one of the best players on the team!At our first meeting, I really struggled keeping up with the advanced kids like Carlos. I of course know how the pieces move and the basic rules, but they were doing all these crazy strategies and opening moves I'd never seen before. I felt kind of dumb having them beat me over and over again. It was pretty frustrating!But then Carlos's dad, who helps coach the club, pulled me aside afterwards. He told me not to get discouraged and that I just need more practice against stronger players to get better. He said I'm picking it up way faster than he did at my age.
