机电工程英语翻译方法
应用背景
随着欧美发达国家先进生产线的大量引进，这些生产线或设备的技术资料都无一例外地采用英语作为工程技术交流的载体，笔者在实践中发现，即使该生产线或设备的制造商不是使用英语的国家，但作为一种最广泛使用的语言，总是以该国家的母语和英语对照的形式出现，因此对于机电工程专业技术人员来说，掌握一些机电工程英语的翻译方法和技巧是非常必要的。
2专业要求
由于各国科技发展水平、文化风俗习惯不同，所以一句英文在英美人看来顺理成章，而在中国人看来却是诘屈聱牙，极为别扭。
我们翻译的技术资料，其内容可能涉及到极为广博的知识领域，工程专业技术人员在具备本身专业知识的同时，必须不断拓展知识结构，学习相关专业领域的外延知识，需要精而广的专业背景。
在机电工程英语的应用方面,除了与公共英语的翻译有某些共同点外,更重要的是要与该专业的自身特点相结合,翻译成中文时,还要与中国工程师和工人所理解的实际情况相结合。
要解决这个问题，工程技术人员就要积极主动地熟悉这个专业领域的相关翻译知识。
比如，冶金方面的专业术语millhousing准确意思是轧机牌坊,由于对冶金工艺设备缺乏了解，在实际翻译中常常将其译成轧机外罩，使得别人百思不得其解。
因此，了解了生产工艺和设备的专业知识，在交流过程中对语言的理解能力就会大大提高，交流起来就不再困难。
十几年来，笔者在工程技术交流实践中逐渐领悟到：在不断追求
译文所需专业知识的同时，利用各种工具书和对照图形或实物是译者译出信、达、雅高质量工程译文的捷径。
3翻译方法及实践
要提高翻译质量，提高交流水平，使译文达到准确、通顺、简练这三个标准，就必须运用翻译技巧及方法。
翻译技巧就是在翻译过程中用词造句的处理方法。
3.1引伸译法
当英语句子中的某个词按词典的释义直译不符合汉语修辞习惯或语言规范时，则可以在不脱离该英语词本义的前提下，灵活选择恰当的汉语词语或词组译出。
笔者在单位承接的合同技术附件中经常发现这样的表达，例如：Manufacturerwillfixthisproblemduringtherecentshutdownofthefinishingmill.制造商会在最近的精轧机停产时解决这一问题。
其中fix字典意思为固定、修理，这里则可以引伸译为解决、处理。
3.2词类转换
技术要求中，常常需要将英语句子中属于某种词类的词，译成另一种词类的汉语词，以适应汉语的表达习惯或达到某种修辞目的。
由安徽铜冠机械公司研制的潜孔钻机和井下无轨设备的英文说明中，笔者对其性能技术特点翻译如下：全方位凿岩，作业范围广（Offer360odrillingcapabilitiesandbroaduseinmining.）这里的动词use已转译为名词作业，使读者一目了然。
3.3广泛使用被动语句
根据笔者统计，技术资料的句子中谓语至少1/3是被动态。
这是因为技术资料侧重叙事推理，强调客观准确。
第一、二人称使用过多，会造成主观臆断的印象。
因此尽量使用第三人称叙述，采用被动语态，例如：Attentionmustbepaidtotheworkingtemperatureofthemachine.应当注意机器的工作温度。
这种译法特别适用于工程技术上汉译英的处理。
3.4大量使用常用句型
技术资料中经常使用若干特定的句型，从而形成区别于其他文体的标志。
例如Itthat结构句型；被动态结构句型；结构句型，分词短语结构句型，省略句结构句型等。
举例如下：Itisevidentthatawelllubricatedbearingturnsmoreeasilythanadryone。
显然，润滑好的轴承，比不润滑的轴承容易转动。
3.5为了描叙事物精确，技术资料常使用长句
为了表述一个复杂概念，使之逻辑严密，结构紧凑，技术资料中往往出现许多长句。
有的长句多达十几个词，例如：铜都铜业黄铜棒设备制造项目中，在德方提供的SN200技术标准中就有这样的长句：Positiontoleranceslimittheextentofdeviationfromtherelativepositionsoftwoor moreelementsoneofwhichis,forfunctionalreasonsorforthepurposeofcleardefin ition,usuallyusedasareferenceelementforthetoleranceindications.笔者的译文是：位置公差是用来限制产生偏离相关位置的两个或更多要素，出于功能上的原因或为了限定清楚，这些要素一般作为公差表示的参考要素。
3.6技术术语的翻译
技术术语的翻译在工程技术交流中占有十分重要的地位。
有的工程技术人员在工程项目交流中，由于缺乏对英语中技术术语的准确把握，常常
不能准确理解一些机电零件的含义，使得同一样东西却有几种名称，很容易让人混淆。
比如在铜陵有色公司赞比亚铜矿开发项目中，业主提供的转化后的加工图纸明细表中，把WingNuts（蝶型螺母）说成翼型螺母，甚至还说成了翅形螺母；把CupPointHexagonSocketSetScrews（内六角凹端紧定螺钉）说成杯状末端的六角型插口的制动螺丝；把HexagonSocketHeadCapScrews（内六角圆柱头螺钉）说成六角型的内六角螺钉；conduitbox导管分线匣说成导管箱。
尽管工程技术人员按照字面意思译得很认真，可是他所译的技术资料，专业的技术人员却看不懂。
如果工程技术人员利用所具备的机电技术专业知识，并查阅一下《机械工程师手册》、《机械零件》的有关内容的话，是可以不太费劲地将外国机械工程师的行话译成地道的中国机械工程师的行话，而不至于闹笑话。
3.7工具书的使用
在工程英语交流中，还要善于学习使用与专业知识有关的各种工具书，主要是各种专业手册如：《机械工程师手册》、《电气工程师手册》以及《世界缩略语翻译大词典》等等。
专业手册是有关专业的各种基本资料的汇编，具有专业信息密集、图文并茂、标准、规范、查找方便等特点。
不熟悉有关专业的工程技术人员，如果案头备有几本专业手册，交流过程中随时与有关英汉词典互相对照、印证，无疑会有助于准确地选择词义的义项，并且有助于专业术语汉译的规范化。
2002年笔者在为冬瓜山铜矿浮选设备技术资料翻译时，有可能是外方的一时疏忽，在图纸明细表里对轴承都用Bearing表示，笔者当时对这个词的翻译也仅仅是汉语
轴承。
而实际情况是，在这张加工装配图上，既有滚动轴承又有滑动轴承，甚至根据图形还能看出它们的内部结构，从而判断出是深沟球轴承还是圆锥滚子轴承。
所以对于这种译文不明确的情况，我们应该参考《机械零件》、《机械设计手册》、《机械工程师手册》等工具书，并根据图纸的图形表达，把要翻译的机械零件的结构和功能尽量弄清楚，给出完整准确的汉语意思，才可以不留疑惑给现场的技术人员和工人师傅们。
每个人的专业知识都是有局限性的，而各种专业手册却是现成的老师，多多请教，会少走弯路。
笔者在多年的工程英语翻译实践中体会到，除了重视英语翻译方法和技巧的学习外，还要不断积累一些通过实战获得的知识：在现场勤于观察实物，是译出高质量译文的重要法宝。
2003年在为金威铜板带项目6台套设备技术资料翻译过程中，笔者发现外方用CarriageAnchor将设备支架固定在基础上，从字面上看，它应该叫筒形锚杆，和普通的中国地脚螺栓FoundationBolt不一样，结果其他工程人员被我弄得一头雾水，后来笔者专门到另外一家使用该零件的设备现场进行了仔细观察，发现它原来是一种内部灌有化学凝固剂可以膨胀的新型地脚螺栓，一般称之为化学螺栓。
这样，才对它有了一个准确的翻译。
至今，笔者对化学螺栓的曲折翻译一直不能释怀，它给了我一次深刻的教训。
通过以上翻译技巧和实践的论述，工程技术人员还应经常进行一定的翻译理论学习，克服语言障碍，尽量译出严复所谓的信、达、雅的高质量译文，使得技术交流通畅无阻，为顺利完成国外先进生产线的引进和制造提供有效的译文服务。
