Studying Abroad
出国留学
The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of Chinese parents who send their children to study abroad. Up to now, this rush is still on and even gets more widespread. Frankly speaking, there are both advantages and disadvantages in receiving overseas education. (中心思想句)
The main benefit of studying abroad is academic one. Obviously the standard of teaching is much higher in western universities because of their more advanced laboratories, up-to-date resources, and professors acutely aware of the latest development in their specialized fields. Besides, exposure to foreign culture 接触外国文化and contact with people from diverse backgrounds will broaden one’s vision / horizon, enrich one’s experience开阔眼界丰富阅历and make him more tolerant. Last but not least, living alone in a foreign country will offer more opportunity to build up one’s independence, cultivate one’s personality and teach him more interpersonal skills.
Despite these obvious advantages, we should not overlook the negative effects of overseas study. For one thing, living far away from home, one will suffer from loneliness and homesickness, an experience so overwhelming that one could not endure it如此强大以至无人可以忍受. Many of the overseas students often feel disoriented/lost and depressed 迷失方向无比沮丧for they find it so hard to adjust to the local custom and lifestyle. For another, the whole family may be under financial burden for many years. Some of the students may even end up dropping out 以辍学而告终or working full-time because they are unable to afford the high college costs.
Based on all the above-mentioned merits and demerits, I believe whether or not to study abroad should be left to individual’s judgment留给个人自己决定. It is advisable that all relevant factors should be taken into account/ consideration before one makes his decision. (271 words)

To begin with, it is an undeniable fact 不可否认that the global economic crisis starting in 2008 brings about an unprecedented difficulty for college graduates to enter job market, which greatly deprives high school graduates of their high expectation to higher education夺走了中学毕业生对高等教育的过高期望. Since higher education, which was once a guarantee for a secure job and promising future, now becomes a huge investment with little return血本无归, many families want to think twice 三思后行and eventually choose to give up.
