Overview of the unit
The main topic of this unit is on Mars .Students learn to think about the future and the possibility of living on another planet .They also learn to weight up the advantages and disadvantages of different situations.
Background information
This unit allows students to unlock their imaginations .Encourage students to think creatively about what life in the future will like .Remind them that there are no right or wrong answers when talking about the future because no one can know what will happen.
Warm-up activity
Students who are interested in science fiction will find this unit interesting .Others may need a little encouragement .You can raise students’interest in this topic by asking them about popular science fiction films and TV X-files .Ask Why do you like this film? Do you think it is realistic? Do you believe in aliens? Would you like to go into space?
Ask students whether they know what colour Mars is .(Red ,)
Ask students whether they know what creatures are supposed to live on Mars (Martians)
Ask students to raise their hands if they would like to go to Mars .Count the raised hands and write a tally on the board .ask students who would not like to go to Mars board .Ask students who are not sure to board .then write the following sentence (complete) on the board : “Most students in Class…,Grade 9 would like/Would not like /are not sure whether they would like to go to Mars .”
Try to keep a record of the tallies you have written down . then you can compare these figures with the figures students give once they have finished the unit ,when you can ask the questions again.
