(外研版2019版)高中英语必修一课文及翻译Unit 1 A new startUnderstanding IdeasMy first day at senior highMonday 4 September1. After I had pictured it over and over again in my mind, the big day finally arrived: my first day at senior high! I woke up early and rushed out of the door in my eagerness to get to know my new school.2. The campus was still quiet when I arrived, so I decided to explore a bit. I was looking at the photos on the noticeboard when I heard a voice behind me. “New here?” Turing around, I saw a white-haired man. “Yes,”I replied. “I’m wondering what life is going to be like here.” “Don’t worry,” he gave me a smile. “You’ll soon find out.”3. How true these words were! When my English teacher stepped into the classroom, I was surprised to see the same manI had met earlier.4. “Good morning, everyone. Before we start, please come to the front one by one and introduce yourself to the class. I’ll go first…”5. “What?!” I tried to tu rn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start. “I should say my name, of course. But what else? What could I say to make a good first impression? Something about my insect collection, perhaps.” I was organizing my words in my head when the girl next to me gave me a nudge. “It’s your turn!”6. With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply. “Hi, I’m Meng Hao.” Everyone started laughing. I looked at them inpanic. “Nice to know we share the same name,” said my new teacher. I had been too nervous to pay attention when he introduced himself! Although I was embarrassed, his words made me a lot more relaxed!7.When we had all introduced ourselves, Mr Meng said, “Well done, everyone! I know this isn’t easy for many of you. But this is just the kind of thing you are going to face at senior high. Challenges like this might sometimes put you under pressure. But it all depends on what you do. Keep calm and be prepared. That way, you’ll make the most of your time at senior high.”8. People say, “Well begun, half done.” I guess this was a good beginning to mynew school life.
Understanding ideasA Child of Two Cuisines1. Growing up in England with a British father and a Chinese mother, I've enjoyed food from both countries ever since I was able to hold a knife and fork --- and chopsticks!2. Mum has sweet memories of the food from her home town in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes. Thanks to this, Dad has come to love hot pot! But there are still some dishes that Dad dare not try even after many years of marriage to my mother. He once told me he was surprised by what he saw on the table when he first visited my mother's parents in China. He was even shocked at their wedding when he saw how the Chinese ate almost every part of an animal. Even today, he still does not easily take to eating things like chicken feet.3.But I enjoy that sort of food myself. Last week I went to the butcher's and asked "Do you have pigs' ears?" " No," the butcher said, pulling at his own ears, " just these ordinary ones." He must have thought I was joking.4. Dad can cook a super "full English breakfast" of bacon, eggs, beans, sausages and toast with butter--- Mum and I just have to find a way to gethim into the kitchen! He also does a typical Sunday roast. We all love roast beef and vegetables, but Mum says we'd better not eat too much roast food as it may make us suffer from heat inside our bodies according to traditional Chinese medicine.5. I'll never forget my first visit to China. Mum encouraged me to try different kinds of food, and I did! I loved everything. But just when I thought I could deal with all Chinese food, I cameacross stinky tofu, a horrible grey thing that looked and smelt like a burnt sports shoe." You needn't try it if you don't want to," Mum said, but I gathered all my courage to take a bite and was amazed to find it wasn't so bad. It reminded me of blue cheese a similarly strong smelling type of food you either love or hate. Maybe I'll fall in love with stinky toufo --- someday.6. People say that one man's meat is another man's poison, but I feel at home with food from both my cultures. To me, there's nothing better than a cross-cultural afternoon tea of English biscuits and a cup of Chinese oolong tea in a fine china cup!Developing ideasCold TruthsHealthy You!Is there any truth behind the saying" You are what you eat"? We put this to the test by asking five people to open their fridge doors and talk about their lifestyles. Can you guess which fridge belongs to which person? Maybe you can recognise your own fridge here!Ellie 24Junior doctorThere's not enough room to swing a cat in my small apartment, so I don't cook very often. My fridge is usually half empty and I'm often too tired to eat much anyway. I often end up saving part of my meal for the next day. Some evenings I'll just have something quick, like toast, or even just a yogurt with honey. As a doctor, I know I had better change the way I eat, but I just don't have the time or the energy right now.Jenny 31TeacherMy husband and I avoid all products that come from animals. This means we don't eat meat and any milk or cheese had better be dairy-free. They like cooking at home and to make our meals from fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables. Cooking together gives us a chance to relax and catch upon each other's days. If we have children, I want to bring them up just like us, but my husband says that everyone should be able to make their own lifestyle choices.Ted 35Construction workerEach day at the construction site is more or less the same- tiring! When I get back home, there's nothing more satisfying than a big meat dinner. I guess I've always been a big meat eater and in this house, no family meal is complete without some form of meat. I still don't think that anything can beat my mum's homemade sausages, though.Mike 49ChefWith five children, we're one big family! My wife and I both work full time, so life can get pretty busy! Like a lot of chefs I know, I don't really do much cooking at home. Sometimes I bring home food from the restaurant where I work. Once a week we do a big shop and buy a lot of frozen food. I know we should eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, but ready meals are so convenient.Max 19College studentThere are five of us living in our shared student house. My mum says I need to have three healthy meals a day, but I'm too busy studying and meeting friends! We don't really buy fresh food, and I suppose the fridge could be kind of cleaner... I daren'tlet my mum see this photo!Writing a recipeRead the food blog and answer the questions.Gong Bao Chicken (also known as Kung Pao Chicken) was originally a family dish of Ding Baozhe, or Ding Gongbao, a high ranking court of official of the Qing Dynasty who helped reconstruct the Dujiangyan Irrigation System in Chengdu, Sichuan. Over the years, it has become one of the most popular dishes in Chinese restaurants throughout the world. The combination of a spicy, salty, sweet and sour flavours makes a Gong Bao Chicken hard to resist. 外研2019版 必修1 U2课文全文 Exploring English
Unit 2 EXPLORING ENGLISHUnderstanding ideasNeither Pine nor Apple in PineappleH ave you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble learning English? I hadn’t, until one day my five-year-old son asked me whether there was ham in a hamburger. There isn’t. This made me realize that there’s no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nor apple in Pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be a crazy language to learn. For example, in our free time we can sculpt a sculpture and paint a painting, but we take a photo. And when we are traveling we say that we are in the car or the taxi, but on the train or bus! While we’re doing all this traveling, we can get seasick at sea, a irsick in the air and carsick in a car, but we don’t get homesick when we get back home. And speaking of home, why aren’t homework and housework the same thing?I f “hard” is the opposite of “soft”, why are “hardly” and “softly” not an opposing pair? If harmless actions are the opposite of harmful actions, why are shameless and shameful behaviors the same?W hen we look out of the window and see rain or snow, we can say “it’s raining” or “it’s snowing”. But when we see sunshine, we can’t say “it’s sunshining”.E ven the smallest words can be confusing. When you see the capitalized “WHO” in a medical report, do you read it as the “who” in “Who’s that?” What about “IT” and “US”?You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in which a house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm is only heard once it goes off!English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And that is why when I wind up my watch, it starts, but when I wind up this passage, it ends.Tips: Unfamiliar English expressionsEach year, many additions are made to English dictionaries. Recent additions include “selfie” (a photograph that you take of yourself, usually with a mobile phone) and “netizen”(a citizen who uses the Internet). Some messaging abbreviations have also been added, for example, BRB (be right back), COZ (because) and G2G (got to go). Some of the language used on the Internet is different to the language used in other forms of communication. It may be a quick and, to you, clear way to communicate, but before you use it, stop and think: who do you want to communicate with and why? Make sure thatany abbreviations and emojis you use are appropriate for the situation, and consider whether you readers will even know what you mean by BRB or COZ.Developing ideasLearning to learnOnline English-learning forums can be a very useful learning resource. Not only can you post specific questions, but you can also broaden your knowledge by reading posts from other English learners around the word.Misadventures in EnglishLast week, our forum asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. We didn’t expect to get so many posts! Here are some of our favourites, to remind us that some of the English we learn in the classroom is rather different from the English in the outside world!366325 commentssharefvouritesYancyPeople say that the British always play safe with what they eat. Not true! I went to a summer school in Manchester and my English teacher was called Maggie. One day, adifferent teacher took our class. He told us that Maggie couldn’t teach that day COZ she had a frog in her throat. Poor Maggie – but why did she try to eat such a big frog?135 commentsSophieWhen I first visited New York, I went to a downtown shopping centre to buy some winter boots. At the information desk at the entrance, I asked a lady where the shoe section was. She said that it was on the first floor. So I went up to the first floor, but couldn’t find any shoes. I decided to leave. When I was looking for the exit, I saw that shoes were actually sold downstairs on the ground floor, not the first floor. Why did she give me the wrong information? X-(128 commentsJulienI’ve got and English penfriend, who I finally got to meet in London this summer. He had told me that his grandfather was “really wicked”. But when I met his grandfather, I liked him a lot. I found it very odd. Why did my friend use a negative word about such a nice man?63 commentsZheng XuThe British must have really high standards. I was part of a student exchange programmebetween a university in England and my university in China. I spent days preparing and writing my first English paper. I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment. When I got the paper back, I found my teacher had written the comment “Not bad!” Not bad? But there weren’t any errors in my paper. :-(85 comments。
外研版(2019)选择性必修第一册 Unit2-Understanding ideas we regret to tell you课文中英文
We Regret to Inform You...我们抱歉地通知您……1 “We regret to inform you...”These are the words that every writer dreads receiving, but words every writer knows well. The response from a publisher comes back and the writer eagerly opens and reads it, their hearts sinking when they reach that final sentence. You may have spent years giving up your weekends and free time to write your life’s work, yet still this is often not enough. Everyone knows that success rarely happens overnight, but perhaps not many know that a lot of highly successful writers have previously faced rejection.“我们抱歉地通知您……”
2 Take for example J.K. Rowling. When she received her first rejection letter, she decided that it meant she now had something in common with her favourite writers, and stuck it on her kitchen wall. Rowling had spent years surviving on little money, spending all her time writing. When she fin ally finished her first book, she received comments from publishers along the lines of “too difficult for children”, “too long”, “Children would not be interested in it”. Nevertheless, she persevered. “I wasn’t going to give up until every single publisher turned me down, but I often feared that would happen,”she later posted. After a total of twelve rejections, one publisher eventually agreed to print 500 copies of her first book, and as we know,Harry Potter became a global success, with over 400 million books sold and translated into more than seventy different languages.以J. K. 罗琳为例。

Module 1 My First Day at Senior HighMy name is Li Kang.I live in Shijiazhuang, a city not far from Beijing .It is the capital city of Hebei Province. Today is my first day at Senior High school and I’m writing down my thoughts about it.My new school is very good and I can see why.The teachers are very enthusiastic and friendly and the classrooms are amazing. Every room has a computer with a special screen, almost as big as a cinema screen. The teachers write on the computer, and their words appear on the screen behind them. The screens also show photographs, text and information from websites. They’re brilliant! The English class is really interesting. The teacher is a very enthusiastic woman called Ms Shen. We’re using a new textbook and Ms Shen’s meth od of teaching is nothing like the teachers at my Junior High school. She thinks that reading comprehension is important, but we speak a lot in class, too. And we have fun.I don’t think I will be bored in Ms Shen’s class! Today we introduced ourselves to each other. We did this in groups. Some students were embarrassed at first but everyone was very friendly and it was really nice. Ms Shen gave us instructions and then we worked by ourselves. Ms Shen wants to help us improve our spelling and handwriting. We do this in a fun way, with spelling games and other activities. I like her attitude very much, and the behaviour of the other students shows that they like her, too. There are sixty-five students in my class — more than my previousclass in Junior High. Forty-nine of them are girls. In other words, there are three times as many girls as boys. They say that girls are usually more hard-working than boys, but in this class, everyone is hard-working. For our homework tonight, we have to write a description of the street where we live.I’m looking forward to doing it!My After-school Activities .As the students of modern times, we have colorful school life. Everyday, we learn plenty of knowledge on different subjects in class. And our school organizes many extracurricular activities in order to help us put what we have learned into practice. After class, we take part in various activities, like playing football, basketball, badminton, etc. They are good for our health.Besides, we are able to join in the lectures organized by literature association, music group, art group, where you can enjoy famous works, learn to play instruments or draw pictures. Also, there are chances for us to use computers in the laboratory and talk with some foreign teachers about anything we are interested in at the English corner. Now, most of us may operate computers freely and have a good command of spoken English. In addition to the after-class activities mentioned here, there are still many others such as sports meeting, debate, social investigation, etc.All those activities make our school life attractive and interesting. We will take advantages of the experience in the future.Moudle 2 My New TeachersThey say that first impressions are very important. My first impression of Mrs. Li was that she was nervous and shy. I think perhaps she was, as it was her first lesson with us. But now, after two weeks, the class really likes working with her. She's kind and patient, and she explains English grammar so clearly that even I can understand it! She avoids making you feel stupid! I've always hated making mistakes or pronouncing a word incorrectly when I speak English, but Mrs.Li just smiles, so that you don't feel completely stupid! I think maybe she goes a bit too slowly for the faster students, but for me it's wonderful! I feel I'm going to make progress with her.I'd guess that Mrs. Chen is almost sixty. She's very strict—we don't dare to say a word unless she asks us to.She's also very serious and doesn't smile much. When she asks you to do something, you do it immediately! There are a few students in our class who keep coming to class late but they're always on time for Mrs. Chen's lessons! Some of our class don't ike her, but most of us really appreciate her because her teaching is so well organised and clear. And a few students even admit liking her! During scientific experiments, she explains exactly what is happening and as a result my work is improving. Physics will never be my favourite lesson, but I think that I’ll do well in the exam with Mrs Chen teaching me.Mr.Wu’s only been teaching us for two weeks and he’s already verypopular.I think this is because he really enjoys teaching Chinese literature ---he loves it, in fact! He’s got so much energy, this is one class you do not fall asleep in! He’s about 28, I think, and is rather good-looking. He talks loudly and fast, and waves his hands about a lot when he gets excited. He’s really amusing and tells jokes when he thinks we’re getting bored.Even things like compositions and summaries are fun with Mr. Wu. I respect him a lot.Module 3 My First Ride on a Train My name is Alice Thompson.I come from Sydney, Australia and I’m 18 years old. Recently I had my first ride on a long-distance train. And what a ride! A friend and I traveled on the famous Ghan train. We got on in Sydney and we got off in Alice Springs, right in the middle of Australia, more than four thousand kilometers away. We spent two days and nights on the train. The train was wonderful and the food was great. We ate great meals cooked by experts! For the first few hundred kilometres of the journey, the scenery was very colourful. There were fields and the soil was dark red. After that, it was desert. The sun shone, there was no wind and there were no clouds in the sky. Suddenly, it looked like a place from another time. We saw abandoned farms which were built more than a hundred years ago. The train was comfortable and the people were nice. During the day, I sat and looked out of the window, and sometimes talked to other passengers. I read books and listened to my Chinese cassettes(I'm studying Chinese at school). One night,at about midnight, I watched the night sky for about an hour. The stars shone like diamonds. Why is the train called the Ghan? A long time ago, Australians needed a way to travel to the middle of the country. They tried riding horses, but the horses didn't like the hot weather and sand. A hundred and fifty years ago, they brought some camels from Afghanistan. Ghan is short for Afghanistan. Camels were much better than horses for travelling a long distance. For many years, trained camels carried food and other supplies, and returned with wool and other products. The Afghans and their camels did this until the 1920s. Then the government built a new railway line, so they didn't need the camels any more. In 1925,they passed a law which allowed people to shoot the animals if they were a problem. In 1935, the police in a town shot 153 camels in one day.Moudle 4 A Social Survey –My Neighbourhood XL:A lively city It's great to see you again, John.JM:It's great to see you! It's been six years since we last saw each other, you know. And this is the first time I've visitedyour hometown.XL:Yes, I'm so glad you could come.JM:You know, I've seen quite a lot of China and I've visited some beautiful cities, but this is one of the most attractive places I've been to. It's so lively, and everyone seems so friendly.XL: Yes, it's one of the most interesting cities on the coast, everyone saysso. I feel very fortunate living here. And I love living by the seaside. JM:You live in the northwest of Xiamen, is that right?XL:Yes, that's right.JM:What's the climate like?XL:Pretty hot and wet in the summer, but it can be quite cold in the winter.JM:Sounds OK to me.There are a lot of tourists around.Don't they bother you? 、XL:Yes, they can be a nuisance in the summer because there are so many of them.JM:Oh, look at that huge apartment block!XL:Yes, they've just completed it. The rent for an apartment there is very high.JM:I believe you! This area's so modern!XL:Yes, this is the business district. They've put up a lot of high-rise buildings recently. And there are some great shopping malls. See, we're just passing one now. My wife's just bought a beautiful dress from one of the shops there.JM:Maybe I could buy a few presents there.XL:I'll take you there tomorrow. Now we're leaving the business district and approaching the harbour. We're entering the western district, the most interesting part of the city. It's got some really pretty parks ...JM:It seems lovely. Is that Gulangyu Island, just across the water?XL:Yes, it is.It's a gorgeous island with some really interesting architecture.JM:So they tell me. Do you think we could stop and walk around for a while?XL:Yes, I was just going to do that. We can park over there. A friend's told me about a nice little fish restaurant near here. Shall we go there for lunch?JM:That sounds great. I'm starving!Moudle 5 A lesson in a LabIt is hard to think of a world without metals. Different metals have different uses, for example, steel is used in cars, and iron is used in electrical equipment. When we use metals, it is importantto know how they react with different substances, for example, water and oxygen. Moudle 6 The Internet and Telecommunications The Internet is the biggest source of information in the world, and it's accessible through a computer. It consists of millions of pages of data. In 1969, DARPA, a U.S. defence organisation, developed a way for all their computers to "talk" to each other through the telephone. They created a network of computers called DARPANET. For fifteen years, only the U.S. army could use this system of communication. Then in 1984, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) started the NSFNET network. It thenbecame possible for universities to use the system as well.NSFNET NSFNET became known as the Inter-Network, or "Internet". The World Wide Web (the web) is a computer network that allows computer users to access information from millions of websites via the Internet. At the moment, about 80 percent of web traffic is in English, but this percentage is going down.By 2020, much web traffic could be in Chinese. The World Wide Web was invented in 1991 by an English scientist, Tim Berners-Lee.Berners-Lee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television! He came up with the idea of the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working in Switzerland.Berners-Lee made it possible for everyone to use the Internet, not just universities and the army. He designed the first "web browser", which allowed computer users to access documents from other computers. From that moment on, the web and the Internet grew. Within five years, the number of Internet users rose from 600 000 to 40 million. The Internet has created thousands of millionaires, but Berners-Lee is not one of them.Everyone in the world can access the Internet using his World Wide Web system. He now works as a lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.。

Three Days to See假如给我三天光明1 I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.我常常思忖,如果每个人在青年时期都有一段时间看不见、听不见,那会是一件幸运的事情,因为黑暗会使人更加珍惜视力,静默能教会人享受声音的美妙。
2 Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently, I asked a friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,”she replied.我时常询问我那些看得见的朋友们,想了解他们看到了什么。
最近,我问一个从林子里散步了许久回来的朋友观察到了什么,她答道:“没什么特别的。
”3 How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes, say for just three days.我问自己,在林子里散步一小时之久却没有看到任何值得注意的东西,这怎么可能呢?我一个看不见的人,仅仅通过触觉,就能发现成百上千件引起我兴趣的东西。

I like her attitude very much, and the behaviour of the other students shows that they like her, too. There are sixty-five students in my class — more than my previous class in JuniorHigh. They are good for our health. Besides, we are able to join in the lectures organized by literature association, music group, art group, where you can enjoy famous works, learn to play instruments or draw pictures. Also, there are chances for us to use computers in the laboratory and talk with some foreign teachers about anything we are interested in at the English corner. Now, most of us may operate computers freely and have a good command of spoken English. In addition to the after-class activities mentioned here, there are still many others such as sports meeting, debate, social investigation, etc. All those activities make our school life attractive and interesting. I've always hated making mistakes or pronouncing a word incorrectly when I speak English, but Mrs. Li just smiles, so that you don't feel completely stupid! I think maybe she goes a bit too slowly for the faster students, but for me it's wonderful! I feel I'm going to make progress with her.I'd guess that Mrs. Chen is almost sixty. She's very strict—we don't dare to say a word unless she asks us to. She's also very serious and doesn't smile much. Physics will never be my favourite lesson, but I think t hat I’ll do well in the exam with Mrs Chen teaching me.Mr.Wu’s only been teaching us for two weeks and he’s already very popular. I think this is because he really enjoys teaching Chinese literature ---he loves it, in fact! He’s got so much energy, thi s is one class you do not fall asleep in! He’s about 28, I think, and is rather good-looking. He talks loudly and fast, and waves his hands about a lot when he gets excited. He’s really amusing and tells jokes when he thinks we’re getting bored. Even things like compositions and summaries are fun with Mr. Wu. I respect him a lot.Module 3 My First Ride on a TrainMy name is Alice Thompson.I come from Sydney, Australia and I’m 18 years old. I read books and listened to my Chinese cassettes (I'm studying Chinese at school). One night,at about midnight, I watched the night sky for about an hour. The stars shone like diamonds. Why is the train called the GhanA long time ago, Australians needed a way to travel to the middle of thecountry. In 1935, the police in a townshot 153 camels in one day.Moudle 4 A Social Survey –My NeighbourhoodXL:A lively city It's great to see you again, John.JM:It's great to see you! It's been six years since we last saw each other, you know. And this is the first time I've visitedyour hometown.XL:Yes, I'm so glad you could come.JM:You know, I've seen quite a lot of China and I've visited some beautiful cities, but this is one of the most attractive places I've been to. It's so lively, and everyone seems so friendly.XL: Yes, it's one of the most interesting cities on the coast, everyone says so. I feel very fortunate living here. And I love living by the seaside. JM:You live in the northwest of Xiamen, is that right?XL:Yes, that's right.JM:What's the climate like?XL:Pretty hot and wet in the summer, but it can be quite cold in the winter.JM:Sounds OK to me. There are a lot of tourists around. Don't they bother you、XL:Yes, they can be a nuisance in the summer because there are so many of them.JM:Oh, look at that huge apartment block!XL:Yes, they've just completed it. It's got some really pretty parks ... JM:It seems lovely. Is that Gulangyu Island, just across the waterXL:Yes, it is. It's a gorgeous island with some really interesting architecture.JM:So they tell me. Do you think we could stop and walk around for a whileXL:Yes, I was just going to do that. When we use metals, it is importantto know how they react with different substances, for example, water and oxygen.Moudle 6 The Internet and TelecommunicationsThe Internet is the biggest source of information in the world, and it's accessible through a computer. It consists of millions of pages of data. In 1969, DARPA, a . defence organisation, developed a way for all their computers to "talk" to each other through the telephone. They created a network of computers called DARPANET. For fifteen years, only the . army could use this system of communication. Then in 1984, the . National Science Foundation (NSF) started the NSFNET network. It then became possible for universities to use the system as well. NSFNET NSFNET became known as the Inter-Network, or "Internet". The World Wide Web (the web) is a computer network that allows computer users to access information from millions of websites via the Internet. At the moment, about 80 percent of web traffic is in English, but this percentage is going down. By 2020, much web traffic could be in Chinese. The World Wide Web was invented in 1991 by an English scientist, Tim Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television! He came up with the idea of the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working in Switzerland. Berners-Leemade it possible for everyone to use the Internet, not just universities and the army. He designed the first "web browser", which allowed computer users to access documents from other computers. From that moment on, the web and the Internet grew. Within five years, the number of Internet users rose from 600 000 to 40 million. The Internet has created thousands of millionaires, but Berners-Lee is not one of them. Everyone in the world can access the Internet using his World Wide Web system. He now works as a lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.。

外研版(2019)选择性必修第一册 Unit2-Understanding ideas 课文
K. 罗琳为例。

Understanding ideas
1. Have you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble learning English? I hadn't, until one day my five -year -old son asked me whether there was ham in the hamburger. There isn't. This made me realize that there's no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be a crazy language to learn.
2. For example, in our free time, we can sculpt a sculpture and paint a painting, but we take a photo. And when we are traveling we say that we are in the car or the taxi but on the train or bus! While we are doing all these traveling, we can get a seasick at sea, airsick in the air and carsick in the car, but we don't get homesick when we get back home. And speaking of home, why aren't homework and housework the same thing?
3. If "hard" is the opposite of "soft", why are "hardly" and "softly" not an opposing pair? If harmless actions are the opposite of harmful actions, we are shameless and shameful behaviors the same?
4. When we look out of the window and see rain or snow, we can say "it's raining" or "it's snowing". But when they see sunshine, we can't say "it's
sunshining".
5. Even the smallest words can be confusing. When you see the capitalized "WHO" in a medical report, do you read it as the "who" in "who's that?" What about "IT" and "US"?
6. You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in which
a house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm is only heard once it goes off!
7. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And that is why when I wind up my watch, it starts, but when I wind up this passage, it ends.

Misadventures in English
People say that the British always play safe with the what they eat. Not true! I went to a summer school in Manchester and my English teacher was called Maggie. One day a different teacher took our class. He told us
that Maggie couldn't teach that day COZ she had a frog in her throat. Poor Maggie, but why did she try to eat such a big frog?
When I first visited New York, I went to a downtown shopping centre to buy some winter boots. At the information desk at the entrance, I asked a lady where the shoe section was. She said that it was on the first floor. So I went up to the first floor but couldn't find any shoes. I decided to leave. When I was looking for the exit, I saw that shoes were actually sold downstairs on the ground floor, not the first floor. Didn't she give me the wrong Information?
I've got an English pen friend who I finally got to meet in London this summer. He had told me that his grandfather was "really wicked". But when I met his grandfather, I liked him a lot. I found it very odd. Why did my friend use a negative word about such a nice man?
The British must have really high standards. I was part of a student exchange program between a university in England and my university in China. I spent days preparing and writing my first English paper. I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment. When I got the paper back, I found my teacher had written the comment "Not bad!" Not bad? But there weren't any errors in my paper.。
