I fell deeply in love with a guy, who I used to think was annoying 2 months ago.It was 1997, in Chittagong, Bang- ladesh, me and my family have just moved to a new apartment in a new area. So, after few weeks have passed, I started going back to school, since it was during Ramadan we moved. Well, I made some new friends in the neighborhood. This girl who was always hanging out with, her name was Ivy.One day when I was going to school, I bumped into Ivy on the way out of my building, and she was standing next to this guy, he lived in the building right beside mine. He said “Hi” to me, and we just asked each other “how are you” and blah blah, then I had to leave. But I noticed that guy was looking at me. It was a different kind of look, look with love in his eyes. Few days later, I noticed whenever I go to school and come back from school, he is standing in his balcony, and smiling at me. If he is not around, and one of his friends see me, they start to yell out his name. Oh yeah, by the way, his name was Mamun. So, I was very annoyed by those things. And I even told Ivy to tell Mamun to stop these foolishness. After my exams were over, I had a break. So I used to go to the roof and read books tospend my time. Mamun used to come to their roof also and both roofs where so close to each other that you can just jump from one to another.Once I was reading a book, and I noticed Mamun come to their roof and he looked at me, and smiled. OH MY GOD! I don't know what happened to me. That sweet smile just took me away.I smiled back at him, for the first time. I could never forget that moment. We used to smile at each other whenever we saw each other, but never had a chat. I was sure that he liked me a lot, because, anytime he would see me on the roof from his balcony, he came up to the roof right away. I fell in love with him very deeply. I was surprised that I did. The feelings I had was so beautiful and made me so happy.Mamun did come to my roof one day to talk to me but I wanted him to go away. I didn't want any one to see us talking. As you know, in Bangladesh rumors go around so fast. When we talked, I saw deep love in his eyes. I always smiled at him; I didn't talk to him much. Still, life was going on so wonderfully. Mamun never told me he loved me. I thought that was because, I was 5/6 years younger than him.Very soon, I found out that me and my family are leaving Bang- ladesh and coming to Canada. I was devas- tated. I cried all night but there was nothing to do. When Mamun found out, he asked me on the roof, if it was true. When I said yes, he asked how long will I be in Canada. The answer was maybe forever, we were going to settle in Canada. He looked depressed, all he said was “Oh”, then I told him out flight date. The next month, it was Ramadan again. Mamun came to say good bye to me on the roof, he was leaving to spend his Eid with his family. That day, I was so sad, I felt like I lost something veryimportant in my life. We said goodbye to each other, he said he thinks I am such a sweet girl, he hopes I have a great life in Canada. Oh my god, I couldn't hold myself, I think my eyes became watery. I didn't want him to see that I was crying. I said “you too” and tried to smile and left the roof right away. That was the last day I ever saw my first love. Now 4 years later, here I am in CANADA. I have guy in my life now, whom I am deeply love with after Mamun. I never lose him.I am ... over Mamun now. Everytime I remember those days, looking at each other on the roof, talking, I feel really down. I wonder where he is now, if we will even meet again...

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Computer Games at Campus. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:1. 大学生能从计算机游戏中受益;2. 但是现在有太多的人沉迷其中;3. 你的看法。

参考范文:Today, many college students are absorbed in playing computer games. Maybe there is some truth in the statement that computer games are fun and will train one's reactivity, determination and attention. However, the merits of computer games can never compensate for the negative effects they have. First, it is very time-consuming to play computer games. The game fans have sacrificed almost all their time, thus they have no time to attend class, to take exercises, or even to date. Upon graduation many will regret that they have wasted the precious college time on nothing. Second, the game fans, who spend their time before the lifeless computers, usually overlook their relationship with others. They would find that they have some mental or psychic problems. In my opinion, I don’t think we can benefit a lot from playing computer games. Study should always be given the first priority. Concerning the negative effects listed above, I do hope those game fans can step away from computer games.(二)礼仪教育How to Enhance Etiquette Education?1. 礼仪教育很重要2. 现在许多大学生都不懂礼仪3. 为加强礼仪教育,家长和学校应该……参考范文:Etiquette education, which plays an important role in moral education, has caught more and more people’s attention. Because it is an integral part of quality-oriented education and contributes to the construction of a harmonious society. However, due to the lack of etiquette education in schools and families as well as the bad influence of the social environment, many college students havelittle knowledge of etiquette, thus it is quite common to see their bad behaviors. For example, they have no respect for their professors and the old, they talk to each other loudly in the library and don’t care about what they should wear in public places.Regarding the seriousness of this phenomenon, I think we should take the following measures to arouse university students’etiquette awareness. First, parents should set a good example for their children at home. Second, colleges should pay attention to students’etiquette education and open some courses relating to etiquette, and they ought to try their best to create a good campus environment at the same time.(三)奖学金申请How I Finance My College Education参考范文:Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that college tuition and fees are a grave problem with which many families and students are confronted in China. Taking a look around, we can find many excellent students are denied the chance to go to college due to lack of money. In view of the seriousness of the situation, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. Actually, the problem can be dealt with in many ways. First, you can ask your parents for help if they have nice careers. Another way to solve this problem is to apply for a bank loan. Finally, we can find a parttime job to get enough money. As to me, I'm in favor of the second idea. My reasons of choice can be listed as follows. First of all, my parents are not rich enough to afford me. Secondly, you'll not have enough time and energy to study after finishing the part time job. Finally, I'm sure that I'll get a nice job after graduation. Then I'll be able to pay back the loan. Through the analysis above, I believe that bank loan is my best choice.(四)城市交通拥堵1、在现代社会,城市交通问题变得越来越严重2、城市交通问题的表现以及人们生活的影响3、解决的方法与措施参考范文:Traffic congestion has long been a problem of great concern and complaint in big cities. It has caused a lot of inconvenience to people’s life and work. For example, people have to set off well in advance to get to work on time and come back very late when their work is over. There are many causes for this problem, but the following may be the most important ones. The first cause is the great increase in the number of private cars. Cars take up more space but they carry fewer people. Some private car drivers, ignoring traffic regulations, drive only for the sake of their own convenience, blockingthe way of other public transportation vehicles. The second cause is the slow and inefficient construction and improvement of the roads and streets. With a large population and numbers of automobiles increasing, some roads still remain unimproved, which will surely lead to problems. The last cause is the insufficient management of the traffic system and the people’s lack of awareness of traffic regulations. Many pedestrians cross the streets even when the traffic lights are against them, which is an obstacle to the flow of traffic. The problem of traffic congestion is an urgent one because it concerns the safety allofus. Wewillnot resolve it if we only rely on the government. Let all of us act now to solve it.(五)就业形势1. 就业的形势越来越严峻,东西部人才供需并不均衡。

But what’s strange nowadays is that people dare not show their helping hands to those in need.I would like to elaborate my views on this issue.Firstly,I think people’s moral sense has degraded. Whe n egoism gains the upper hand, many people find it growingly hard to help others. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:1. 团队合作的重要性2. 以我的亲身经历说明团队合作比个人能力更重要3. 结论Importance of TeamworkTeamwork is an essential aspect of success in today's highly competitive world. In my own experience, I have found that teamwork often leads to better outcomes than individual efforts alone.I remember a group project in college where I was assigned to work with three classmates on a research paper. At first, we all had different ideas about how to approach the assignment, but through open communication and collaboration, we were able to come up with a cohesive plan. Each of us brought unique strengths to the table, and by combining our individual skills and knowledge, we were able to produce a high-quality paper that impressed our professor.Working in a team taught me the importance of listening to others' perspectives, being willing to compromise, and trusting in the abilities of my teammates. It also showed me that by working together towards a common goal, we can achieve greatthings that would have been nearly impossible to accomplish on our own.In conclusion, teamwork is a vital skill that everyone should develop. When individuals come together to share their talents and support each other, they can achieve far more than they ever could alone. By fostering a spirit of cooperation and collaboration, we can build stronger relationships, boost productivity, and ultimately reach greater levels of success in all aspects of our lives.篇3Title: Analysis on the 2017 June CET-4IntroductionThe College English Test (CET), also known as the Chinese-English Proficiency Test, is a national English test in China. 2017年四级作文(全文5篇)

2017年四级作文(全文5篇)第一篇:2017年四级作文2017年6月英语四级作文万能范文Directions: For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The most unforgettable Person I ever Know. You should write at least 120 words and base your composition on the outline below:1.我生活中最难忘的人是,2.为什么他(或她)令我难以忘怀,3.结论。

范文:In my life I have met a great many people who are really worth recalling. But perhaps the most unforgettable person I ever know is my English teacher. What frequently brings back memories of my school teacher is his special qualities.First and foremost, he gave us the greatest gift a teacher can offer—an awakening of a passion for learning. He not only led us to an appreciation of the beauty and perfection of English language and literature, but also aroused our great interest in exploring something deeper in this field.Furthermore, I was attracted by his lively wit.I remember that we students always anticipated his class with great eagerness because his lecture were humorously delivered, never failing to provoke chuckles or loud laughs.Although it is nearly two years since I attended his last class, he is the talk of our old classmates, and I know part of him has already stayed in my heart.网络语言1.近年来网络语言在青少年中很流行2.人们对这一现象看法不同3.我的看法范文:Internet Slang2017年6月英语四级作文万能范文Internet slang such as LOL(laughing out loud)and ROFL(rolling on the floor laughing)enjoys great popularity among teenagers nowadays. In fact, it becomes so popular that many terms now cross from computer-mediated communication to face-to-face communication. Some teenagers even use them in essay writing.People have different opinions towards this phenomenon. Some people say that it will help enrich the language system and make language diverse. But others disagree, saying that these new words, being abbreviations for existing, long-used phrases, don't “enrich” anything;they just shorten it and their total effect on language will be trivial. In my opinion, Internet slang has little effect on language in general, but will greatly influence individuals', especially teenagers' language development. The reason is that overuse of Internet slang will lead to the lack of proper punctuations and grammar and has numerous misspellings in writing. That will drastically reduce chances of employment when students graduate and seek jobs. So, for the sake of their future, teenagers had better refrain from Internet slang.网络公开课1.现在网络公开课很盛行2.网络公开课有不少好处,也存在一些问题3.我对此的建议范文:Open CoursesOnline open courses are gaining popularity in recent years.Following globally famous universities like Yale and Harvard, some universities in China have also started to offer online open courses. Those courses have attracted people fromall classes with different occupations.2017年6月英语四级作文万能范文The courses have brought many benefits to people. Many of the courses are provided by universities in foreign countries, and thus offer fresh ideas to us.Through them, we can keep up with what people are thinking all over the world. But that can also be a problem. Some of the courses may not be very suitable for Chinese students because of cultural differences and may cause chaos on Chinese campus. In my opinion, online open course is useful and we should make use of it to broaden our horizons. But we should also remember to have our own thinking and not be brainwashed by improper ideas. How to Keep Psychologically Healthy? For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: How to Keep Psychologically Healthy? You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese.1.心理健康问题往往是导致疾病的原因2.分析人们产生心理健康问题的原因(可从失业、压力过重、缺乏支持、缺乏人际交往能力等方面分析)3.你认为人们应如何保持心理健康范文:How to Keep Psychologically Healthy? One in four people will experience some kind of mental problem in the course of a year. When you fail to manage these problems, they are likely to cause various mental illnesses. The cause of mental health problems often vary a lot from one case to another. In today's society, a good number of people are suffering from heavy pressure.Others lack communication skills. In addition, a lot of people are ignorant of psychological knowledge about how to keep mentally fit.2017年6月英语四级作文万能范文There are a lot of ways to curb mental health problems and keep psychologically healthy.Firstly, find the real cause of your mental health problem and see whether you can do something about it.Secondly, learn to relax yourself and take exercises to release the stly, you may find it helpful to talk to your partner or friend about your problem, or seek support and advice form a psychological consultant.收入差距1.收入差距悬殊是当前社会的一种现象2.人们对之褒贬不一3.我的看法范文:My View on the Income GapNow the income gap is getting wider and wider. In some privately owned firms, joint-ventures, or foreign-fund companies, an executive's yearly income is ten times or even a hundred times as much as an ordinary worker's.Faced with this situation, people will undoubtedly have different opinions. Some believe that it benefits the social and economic development since driving force is often derived from the gap.In other words, the gap inspires people and gives a push to advancement.Others speak of its side effect: income gap is often the root of social unrest and also contrary to our country's principle. From my point of view, while it is true that the income gap may stimulate the social development to some extent, it causes trouble as well.An income gap that is too wide for most people to bear can neither contribute to the stability of a country nor promote its economic development. Therefore, while we are advocating the rapid development of our country, we should tolerate the narrow income gap but narrow the wide one.2017年6月英语四级作文万能范文Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a letter on the issue of employment for gradutes. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline given below in Chinese:1.就业的形势越来越严峻,东西部人才供需并不均衡。

Thus,if we cannot slow donw our pace, there will definitely be an awkward silence between parents and us,which is not rare now.As a resut, young people should talk more with parents to share our feelings and to understand cach other better.Everyone wants loving parents who are open and supportive.Only through frequent communication with them, can we establish such a harmonious relationship.5)Directions:For this part, you are allowed30minutes to write a short essay on how to best handle the relationship between teachers and students. You should write at least120words but no more than180words.Teacher-student Relationship Is Never ComplexThe relationship between teachers and students has been hotly discussed in recent years in China for more attention has been paid to education.Today I would like to share some tips on how to get along well with teachers from students’perspective.First and foremost, leave a good first impression on your teacher. As the saying goes, well begun is half done.A good first impression is important for teachers to remember your name among your fellow students.Secondly, study hard and be active in class.A student who loves study can definitely impress teachers deeply. Finally, keep contact with your teacher after. To conclude,teacher-student relationship is never complex if you could have an excellent academic performance,be cooperative in calss or make friends with your teacher.6)Directions:For this part, you are allowed30minutes to write a short essay on how to best handle the relationship between doctors and patients. You should write at least120words but no more than180words.Mutual Understanding Is Most ImportantWhen we talk about the relationship between doctors and patients, what comes into my mind is generally negative news. However,I believe there is a way for doctors and patients to get along harmoniously--that is mutual understanding. One the one hand, patients are helpless and worried when they go to hospital. So doctor’s attitude or response is critically important for them and their family. On the other hand, doctors have to face so many patients every day that they even have no time to take a rest.Such a high intensity of work could drive a man crazy. Thus,if they can stand in each other’s shoes, most problems could be solved.Otherwise,a doctor’s brief conlusion about the condition of patients might be regarded as could blood and result in conflicts.Nowdays, much effort has been made to ease the tension of doctor-patient relationship. But I think the most effective one is mutual understanding and trust.。

2017年英语四级作文真题2017年英语四级作文真题1:整容1.近年来,整容现象屡见不鲜2.出现这一现象的原因3.我对这一现象的看法和建议On Cosmetic SurgeriesIn recent years, there have appeared more and more artificialbeauties around us.Not only those actresses but also many ordinary women are crazy about cosmetic surgeries. They fail to resist the temptation of becoming more beautiful by changing some parts of their bodies within a few hours’ surgery. What are responsible for the prevalence of cosmetic surgeries? Firstly, thanks to the development of shaping techniques, the chances of successful surgeries have increased greatly, which makes more people begin to believe and accept cosmeticsurgeries.Secondly, with the improvement of living standard, people have more money to satisfy their nature of pursuing beauty. From my point of view, cosmetic surgeries have their necessity of existence in modern society. They do help some people build confidence by giving them a beautiful face or figure. However, cosmetic surgeries cannot bring permanent beauty and might be dangerous.Besides,I think one’s inner beauty is moreimportant. Therefore,I suggest that people should think twice before deciding to accept cosmetic surgeries.2017年英语四级作文真题2:自私和贪婪Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the remark “"Nowadays People Are Selfish and Greedy."Do You Agree or Disagree with This Point of View?”. You may cite some examples to support your view. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.Selfish and GreedyThere is no doubt that some people are selfish and greedy. For example, some merchants sell their fake commodities at the market place for more profit. They are rich and want to be richer. There are also government officials who sell people's trust. Senior officials who take bribes by selling the power in their hands are not a few. Those people believe in the precept "Everyone for himself and the devil take the hind most."However, the majority of people are neither selfish nor greedy. They contribute much and ask for little. Countless examples can be found around us, the PLA soldiers who sacrificed themselves for savingpeople's lives in fighting the disastrous floods and the warriors in white who risked their lives to save SARS victims being two of the most typical contrast to the selfish and corrupt officialthey are heroes, who set up glorious images for us.The idea that nowadays people are selfish and greedy is probably attributed to the influence of the mass media which tend to over exaggerate the negative aspects of life. Many newspapers, particularly many local evening papers, and TV films play up nastiness by reporting and showing too much about violence and sex. A lot of books, too, portray selfishness and greed to seek sensational effect and economic profit. I wonder whether they are selfish and greedy, too?2017年英语四级作文真题3:知识之美Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on thesaying "The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take that away from you.You can cite examples to illustrate the beauty and features of knowledge. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. The Beauty of KnowledgePraise of knowledge has never come to an end since ancient times. Apparently, knowledge is a treasure that everybody volunteers to possess and much of success could be attributed to it directly or indirectly. As far as I am concerned, the beauty of knowledge can be explainedin three aspects.Firstly, knowledge is open to all human beings. People can learn whatever they wish in one way or another. Secondly, knowledge learnt can be reflected in one's later life, so that one knows how to savor the present moment in peaceful times and how to deal with problems in difficult times. Last but not least, one of the most prominent featuresof knowledge is that one carries it throughout his life. Even if one loses a large fortune, he will never be a beggar if he already knows how to make money. To sum up, knowledge is of great importance in one's lifetime. It is advisable that one should learn the beauty of knowledge and enjoy the process of learning.2017年英语四级作文真题4:少儿真人秀Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Children’s participation in reality shows. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.Children’s participation in reality showsNowadays, it has become a trend for children to participate inreality shows. However, is it really good for them? There are two sides for each coin. On one hand, participating in reality shows is good for children. First, it can make children more courageous and more confident. Second, some shows such as outdoor shows can make children more independent. For example,in some shows, children are required to accomplish some taskswithout their parents accompanying them. That is a good way to train the children. On the other hand, children’s participation in reality shows may cause some disadvantages to them. For instance, children may become vainglorious if they win some fame from the shows. They may tend to paymore attention to undeserved reputation instead of studying hard. They may overlook the importance of working hard.As a result, you really need to think carefully before you take your children to reality shows. I personally feel that these shows make the children grow up too fast. Why not just let them be children?2017年英语四级作文真题5:生活的意义与目的Directions: Forthis part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commentingon the saying "The meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life is to give it away. You can cite examples to illustrate your point of view. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. The Meaning and Purpose of LifeEveryone may encounter a scene when he or she wonders what the meaning and purpose of life is. Answers to this question vary from person to person. As for me, I agree with the view that the meaning of life is to discover your gift and the purpose of life is to make the best of it.On one hand, one's gift could be the source of his inner happiness, providing spiritual impetus and correct orientation. Take the world-renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang as an example. His gift was noticed before he was 3 years old, which laid the foundation of his glorious life. On the other hand, proper use of talent helps people to realize their value in a positive way, thus making contribution to the society as a whole. For instance, Isaac Newton made a universallyamazing discovery by digging into his gift and finding the Newton's law of gravitation. In conclusion, let's search for our true gift and utilize it to the fullest to achieve a happy and valuable life.【延伸阅读】英语四级作文常用转折词汇一、文章及段落起始常用的过渡词语to begin with (首先); generally speaking (总体上讲); first of all (第一,首先); in the first place (首先)二、文章及段落结尾常用的过渡词语therefore, thus (因此); in conclusion (最后); in brief, in anutshell(简言之); to sum up (总而言之); in a word (总之)三、常用表示先后次序的过渡词语first (第一);second (第二);next (其次,然后); eventually (最后,最终)since then (自此以后); afterward (以后,随后); meanwhile (同时) therefore (因而); immediately (立刻);finally (最后,最终)四、常用表示因果关系的过渡词语Accordingly (于是); for this reason (由于这个原因); as a result of (由……的结果); in this way (这样); consequently (结果,因此); due to(由于……);Therefore (因而); because of (因为); thus (这样)五、常用表示比较和对比的过渡词语In contrast with (和……成对照); similarly (同样);whereas (然而); on the contrary (相反); different from (与……不同);likewise (同样); equally important (同样重要); on the other hand (另一方面)六、常用表示举例的过渡词语A case in point (恰当的例子);for example (举例);namely/that is (即,这就是说); for instance (举例)七、常用表示强调的过渡词语Furthermore (此外);moreover (而且); besides (此外);in fact (实际上);Also (而且,也); indeed (的确); again (另外,还); in particular (尤其,特别); naturally (当然,自然,必然)。

She noticed there was a real void in quality STEM education at all (27) of the public educational system. She said, “I started Engineering For Kids (EFK) after noticing a real lack of math, science and engineering programs to (28) my own kids in”She decided to start an afterschool program where children (29) in STEM-based competitions. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Why aren’t you curious about what happened?[A] “You suspended Ray Rice after our video,”a reporter from TMZ challengedNational Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell the other day. “Why didn’t you have the curiosity to go to the casino(堵场) yourself?” The implication of the question is that a more curious commissioner would have found a way to get the tape.[B] The accusation of incuriosity is one that we hear often, carrying the suggestionthat there is something wrong with not wanting to search out the truth. “I have been bothered for a long time about the curious lack of curiosity,” said a Democratic member of the New Jersey legislature back in July, referring to an insufficiently inquiring attitude on the part of an assistant to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who chose not to ask hard questions about the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal. “Isn’t the mai nstream media the least bit curious about what happened?” wrote conservative writer Jennifer Rubin earlier this year, referring to the attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya.[C] The implication, in each case, is that curiosity is a good thing, and a lack ofcuriosity is a problem. Are such accusations simply efforts to score political points for one’s party? Or is there something of particular value about curiosity in and of itself?[D] The journalist Ian Leslie, in his new and enjoyable book Curious: The Desire toKnow and Why Your Future Depends on It, insists that the answer to that last question is ‘Yes’. Leslie argues that curiosity is a much-overlooked human virtue, crucial to our success, and that we are losing it.[E] We are suffering, he writes, fr om a “serendipity deficit.” The word “serendipity”was coined by Horace Walpole in an 1854 letter, from a tale of three princes who “were always making discoveries, by accident, of things they were not in search of.” Leslie worries that the rise of the Int ernet, among other social and technological changes, has reduced our appetite for aimless adventures. No longer have we the inclination to let ourselves wander through fields of knowledge, ready to be surprised. Instead, we seek only the information we want.[F] Why is this a problem? Because without curiosity we will lose the spirit ofinnovation and entrepreneurship. We will see unimaginative governments and dying corporations make disastrous decisions. We will lose a vital part of what has made humanity as a whole so successful as a species.[G] Leslie presents considerable evidence for the proposition that the society as awhole is growing less curious. In the U.S. and Europe, for example, the rise of the Internet has led to a declining consumption of ne ws from outside the reader’s borders. But not everything is to be blamed on technology. The decline in interest in literary fiction is also one of the causes identified by Leslie. Reading literary fiction, he says, makes us more curious.[H] Moreover, in o rder to be curious, “you have to be aware of a gap in yourknowledge in the first place.” Although Leslie perhaps paints a bit broadly in contending that most of us are unaware of how much we don’t know, he’s surely right to point out that the problem is g rowing: “Google can give us the powerful illusion that all questions have definite answers.”[I] Indeed, Google, for which Leslie express admiration, is also his frequent whippingboy(替罪羊). He quotes Google co-founder Larry Page to the effect that the “perfect search engine” will “understand exactly what I mean and give me back exactly what I want.” Elsewhere in the book, Leslie writes: “Google aims to save you from the thirst of curiosity altogether.”[J] Somewhat nostalgically (怀旧地), he quotes John Maynard Keynes’s justly famous words of praise to the bookstore: “One should enter it vaguely, almost ina dream, and allow what is there freely to attract and influence the eye. To walkthe rounds of the bookshops, dipping in as curiosity dictates, should be an afternoon’s entertainment.” If only![K] Citing the work of psychologists and cognitive(认知的) scientists, Leslie criticizes the received wisdom that academic success is the result of a combination of intellectual talent and hard work. Curiosity, he argues, is the third key factor—and a difficult one to preserve. If not cultivated, it will not survive: “Childhood curiosity is a collaboration between child and adult. The surest way to kill it is to leave it alone.”[L] School education, he warns, is often conducted in a way that makes children incurious. Children of educated an upper-middle-class parents turn out to be far more curious, even at early ages, than children of working class and lower class families. That lack of curiosity produces a relative lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge is difficult if not impossible to compensate for later on. [M] Although Leslie’s book isn’t about politics, he doesn’t entirely shy away from the problem. Political leaders, like leaders of other organizations, should be curious. They should ask questions at crucial moments. There are serious consequences, he warns, in not wanting to know.[N] He presents as an example the failure of the George W. Bush administration to prepare properly for the after-effects of the invasion of Iraq. According to Leslie, those who ridiculed former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for his 2002 remark that we have to be wary of the “unknown unknowns” were mistaken.Rumsfeld’s idea, Leslie writes, “wasn’t absurd—it was smart.” He adds, “The tragedy is that he didn’t follow his own advice.”[O] All of which brings us back to Goodell and the Christie case and Benghazi. Each critic in those examples is charging, in a different way, that someone in authority is intentionally being incur ious. I leave it to the reader’s political preference to decide which, if any, charges should stick. But let’s be careful about demanding curiosity about the other side’s weaknesses and remaining determinedly incurious about our own. We should be delighted to pursue knowledge for its own sake—even when what w e find out is something we didn’t particularly want to know.36. To be curious, we need to re alize first of all that there are many things we don’t know.37. According to Leslie, curiosity is essential to one’s success.38. We should feel happy when we pursue knowledge for knowledge’s sake.39. Political leaders’ lack of curiosity will result in bad consequences.40. There are often accusations about politicians’ and the media’s lack of curiosity to find out the truth.41. The less curious a child is, the less knowledge the child may turn out to have.42. It is widely accepted that academic accomplishment lies in both intelligence and diligence.43. Visiting a bookshop as curiosity leads us can be a good way to entertain ourselves.44. Both the rise of the Internet and reduced appetite for literary fiction contribute to people’s declining curiosity.45. Mankind wouldn’t be so innovative without curiosity.Section CDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.Aging happens to all of us, and is generally thought of as a natural part of life. It would seem silly to call such a thing a “disease.”On the other hand, scientists are increasingly learning that aging and biological age are two different things, and that the former is a key risk factor for conditions such as heart disease, cancer and many more. In that light, aging itself might be seen as something treatable, the way you would treat high blood pressure or a vitamin deficiency.Biophysicist Alex Zhavoronkov believes that aging should be considered a disease. He said that describing aging as a disease creates incentives to develop treatments.“It unties the hands of the pharmaceutical (制药的) industry so that they can begin treating the disease and not just the side effects,” he said.“Right now, people think of aging as natural and something you can’t control,” he said. “In academic circles, people take aging research as just an interest area wherethey can try to develop interventions. The medical community also takes aging for granted, and can do nothing about it except keep people within a certain health range.”But if aging were recognized as a disease, he said, “It would attract funding and change the way we do health care. What matters is understanding that aging is curable.”“It was always known that the body accumulates damage,” he added. “The only way to cure aging is to find ways to repair that damage. I think of it as preventive medicine for age-related conditions.”Leonard Hayflick, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, said the idea that aging can be cured implies the human lifespan can be increased, which some researchers suggest is possible. Hayflick is not among them.“There’re many people who recover from cancer, stroke, or heart disease. But they continue to age, because aging is separate from their disease,” Hayflick said. “Even if those causes of death were eliminated, life expectancy would still not go much beyond 92 years.”46. What do people generally believe about aging?A) It should cause no alarm whatsoever.B) They just cannot do anything about it.C) It should be regarded as a kind of disease.D) They can delay it with advances in science.47. How do many scientists view aging now?A) It might be prevented and treated. C) It results from a vitamin deficiency.B) It can be as risky as heart disease. D) It is an irreversible biological process.48. What does Alex Zhavoronkov think of “describing aging as a disease”?A) It will prompt people to take aging more seriously.B) It will greatly help reduce the side effects of aging.C) It will free pharmacists from the conventional beliefs about aging.D) It will motivate doctors and pharmacists to find ways to treat aging.49. What do we learn about the medical community?A) They now have a strong interest in research on aging.B) They differ from the academic circles in their view on aging.C) They can contribute to people’s health only to a limited extent.D) They have ways to intervene in people’s aging process.50. What does Professor Leonard Hayflick believe?A) The human lifespan cannot be prolonged.B) Aging is hardly separable from disease.C) Few people can live up to the age of 92.D) Heart disease is the major cause of aging.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.Female applicants to postdoctoral positions in geosciences were nearly half as likely to receive excellent letters of recommendation, compared with their male counterparts. Christopher Intagliata reports. As in many other fields, gender bias is widespread in the sciences. Men score higher starting salaries, have more mentoring (指导), and have better odds of being hired. Studies show they’re also perceived as more competent than women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. And new research reveals that men are more likely to receive excellent letters of recommendation, too.“Say, you know, this is the best student I’ve ever had,” says Kuheli Dutt, a social scientist and diversity officer at Columbia University’s Lamont campus. “Compare those excellent letters with a merely good letter: ‘The candidate was productive, or intelligent, or a solid scientist or some thing that’s clearly solid praise,’ but nothing that singles out the candidate as exceptional or one of a kind.”Dutt and her colleagues studied more than 1,200 letters of recommendation for postdoctoral positions in geoscience. They were all edited for gender and other identifying information, so Dutt and her team could assign them a score without knowing the gender of the student. They found that female applicants were only half as likely to get outstanding letters, compared with their male counterparts. That includes letters of recommendation from all over the world, and written by, yes, men and women. The findings are in the journal Nature Geoscience.Dutt says they were not able to evaluate the actual scientific qualifications of the applicants using the data in the files. But she says the results still suggest women in geoscience are at a potential disadvantage from the very beginning of their careers starting with those less than outstanding letters of recommendation.“We’re not trying to assign blame or criticize anyone or call anyone consciously sexist. Rather, the point is to use the results of this study to open up meaningful dialogues on implicit gender bias, be it at a departmental level or an institutional level or even a discipline leve l.” Which may lead to some recommendations for the letter writers themselves.51. What do we learn about applicants to postdoctoral positions in geosciences?A) There are many more men applying than women.B) Chances for women to get the positions are scarce.C) More males than females are likely to get outstanding letters of recommendation.D) Male applicants have more interest in these positions than their female counterparts.52. What do studies about men and women in scientific research show?A) Women engaged in postdoctoral work are quickly catching up.B) Fewer women are applying for postdoctoral positions due to gender bias.C) Men are believed to be better able to excel in STEM disciplines.D) Women who are keenly interested in STEM fields are often exceptional.53. What do the studies find about the recommendation letters for women applicants?A) They are hardly ever supported by concrete examples.B) They contain nothing that distinguishes the applicants.C) They provide objective information without exaggeration.D) They are often filled with praise for exceptional applicants.54. What did Dutt and her colleagues do with the more than 1,200 letters of recommendation?A) They asked unbiased scholars to evaluate them.B) They invited women professionals to edit them.C) They assigned them randomly to reviewers.D) They deleted all information about gender.55. What does Dutt aim to do with her study?A) Raise reco mmendation writers’ awareness of gender bias in their letters.B) Open up fresh avenues for women post-doctors to join in research work.C) Alert women researchers to all types of gender bias in the STEM disciplines.D) Start a public discussion o n how to raise women’s status in academic circles. 英语四级作文2017

英语四级作文2017

英语四级作文2017In the contemporary era, technology has become an integral part of our lives, transforming various aspects of society, including education. The integration of technology into the educational system has brought about a significant shift in the way students learn and teachers teach. This essay will explore the positive and negative impacts of technology on modern education, focusing on the use of digital tools, online learning, and the challenges it poses.Positive Impacts:1. Enhanced Learning Experience: Technology has enriched the learning experience by providing access to a wealth of information and resources. Students can now access educational content through various digital platforms, such as e-books, online courses, and educational apps.2. Interactive Learning: The use of interactive whiteboards, tablets, and computers in classrooms has made learning more engaging. Students can participate in interactive lessons, simulations, and virtual experiments, which can make complex concepts easier to understand.3. Personalized Learning: Technology allows for personalized learning experiences. Adaptive learning software can tailor educational content to suit individual student's needs, pace, and learning style, which can lead to better academicoutcomes.4. Global Collaboration: With the help of technology, students can now collaborate with peers from around the world. This exposure to diverse perspectives and cultures can foster a more inclusive and global mindset.Negative Impacts:1. Distraction: The ubiquity of technology can also be a source of distraction. Students may be tempted to use their devices for non-educational purposes during class, which can detract from their learning.2. Digital Divide: Not all students have equal access to technology. The digital divide can exacerbate educational inequalities, as those without access to the latest devices and internet services may be at a disadvantage.3. Over-reliance on Technology: There is a risk that students may become overly reliant on technology for learning, neglecting the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in the real world.4. Lack of Human Interaction: The increased use of technology in education can sometimes lead to a reduction in face-to-face interaction between teachers and students. This canaffect the quality of teaching and the development of social skills. In conclusion, while technology has the potential to greatly enhance modern education, it is important to address the challenges it presents. Educators must strive to find a balance between leveraging the benefits of technology and preserving the essential human elements of the educational experience. By doing so, we can ensure that technology serves as a tool to enrich learning, rather than overshadowing the fundamental aspects of education.。

2017大学英语四级作文

2017四级写作必背范文、句型、模板1、就业Directions: For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Jobs for Graduates. You should write at least 120 words and base your composition on the outline below:1、大学生难找工作,2、原因很多,3、解决的办法。

Job hunting has always been a headache for college students. Though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation. The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country.I reckon this problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. First, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. Second, stude nts’ attitude towards employment should be changed. They should go to small cities and country. There they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention, the situation can be improved.找工作对很多大学毕业生来讲已经变成了非常头疼的问题。
