Let‟s TalkThe Origin of the Song “Happy Birthday to Y ou”The story of the song “Happy Birthday to Y ou” Began as a sweet one, but later became bitter. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at a kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, wrote a song together for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister‟s knowledge in the area of kindergarten education, …Good Morning to All”was sure to be a success. The sister published the song in a collection entitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten”in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University‟s Teachers College, a gentleman by the name Robert Coleman published the song, without the sisters‟permission. He added a second part, which is the familiar “Happy Birthday to Y ou”.Mr. Coleman‟s addition of the second part made the song popular and, finally, the sisters” original first part disappeared. “Happy Birthday to Y ou”had altogether replaced the sisters‟original song “Good Morning to All”. In 1916 Patty took legal action against Mr. Coleman. In court, she succeeded in proving that hey were the real owners of the song.1.teacher at a kindergarten2.Good Morning to All3.Happy Birthday to Y ou4.Happy Birthday to Y ou Good Morning to AllPossible Retelling for the Teacher‟s ReferenceThe story of “Happy Birthday to Y ou” was a nice, sweet on eat the very beginning, but later turned into a bitter one. And he wasn‟t even the first. Elisha Gray transmitted music over a telephone line in 1876, which was the same year the telephone was invented. Gray invented the first electronic music instrument in 1874, calling it the “Musical Telegraph”. Alexander Graham Bell also designed an experimental “Electric Harp”for speech to be transmitted over a telephone line using technology similar to Gray‟s. Bell was a speech teacher for the deaf. All that writing on the wall in blood…It scares me to death just to think about it!Both the girl and the boy are excited/crazy about the movie and the hero Harry Potter. The boy heard that the writer J.K. Rowling has written the latest book, which is Book Seven, though the girl is still waiting for Book Five. The boy has been the trailer and believes the film will be scary. The girl shares that view because of the writing on the wall in blood.Task 2: A Great ActorThere was once a great actor who could no longer remember his lines. After several years of searching, he finally found a theater that was willing to give him a try. The director said, “This is the most important part, and it has only one line. At the opening you walk onto stage carrying a rose. Y ou hold the rose to your nose with just one finger and thumb, smell it deeply and then say the line on praise of the rose: …Ah, the sweet smell of my love.‟” The actor was excited. All day long before the play he practiced his line over and over again. Finally, the time came. The curtain went up, the actor walked onto the stage, looked at the audience, and with great emotion said the line, “Ah, the sweet smell of my love.” The audience exploded in laughter. Only the director was furious! “Ahhhhhh! Y ou damned fool!”he cried. “Y ou‟ve ruined my play! Y ou‟ve ruined me!”The actor was puzzled, “What happened? Did I forget my line?”“No!” shouted the director. “Y ou forget the rose!”1.D2.C3.D4.A5.BTask 3: Movie ReviewsI love movies! And after I see them, I like to comment on them. These are movies I saw this year I would like to recommend: Among comedies I highly recommend “Monsoon Wedding”. It‟s an Indian movie. The story is about an Indian wedding. Preparations for the wedding bring out funny and sad situations touching on love and a past rape. This movie shows some of the wonderful customs of India, and the importance of family and love. It‟s great!Among dramas, I like “Adaptation”. It is an excellent movie! But for me the first part of the movie was too fast to follow. I hope to see it again on DVD with captions.“The Pianist” is set in the Second World War. It‟s about a young Polish-Jewish pianist, who lives in Warsaw with his family. The Nazis sent his family to die in the concentration camps. He was safe, but would have died without unusually good luck and the kindness of a few non-Jews. This is a powerful movie with thought-provoking themes.“Rabbit-Proof Fence” is set in the 1930s in Australia, and it‟s based on real events. It is about three native girls who are separated from their families by the racist police who send them to special centers. There the girls are taught practical skills, and the government tries to integrate them into white Australian society. They can away from the camp and walked 1,500 miles to find their mothers. This is a sad, touching story that you should not miss.1.He likes to see movies and comment on them.2.Four.3.Three.4.One.IV. Will you come with me?Laura: Yeah, definitely! Thanks for inviting me!John: It‟s my pleasure.Laura: I really wanted to see Star Wars on the opening night, but the tickets were sold out. How did you manage to get hold of them?John: A friend of mine works at the “Pepsi” headquarters, which is a major sponsor of the movie. So he was able to get the tickets for free.Laura: Wow, people are paying as much as $200 each on the black market. I‟m flattered you went through all this trouble just for me.John: Y ou‟re welcome. Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: Hi, are you busy this weekend?B: Y es. What‟s on your mind?A: I‟ve got two tickets for the car exhibition. Would you like to go with me?B: Sure. Thanks for your invitation.A: It‟s nothing.B: I‟ve been wanting to see exhibition, but it was not at all easy to get a ticket. How did you manage to get two tickets?A: A friend of mine works at the exhibition center. She was able to get three free tickets.B: Wow, people are paying almost 100 yuan for a ticket on the black market. Thank you very much indeed for inviting me.A: No problem.Model 2 What did you think about the movie?John: So…what did you think about the movie?Laura: Well… I think this Star Wars episode is an excellent piece of work, but not as good as the previous ones.John: Really? But I think this Star Wars episode was incredible!Laura: Why do you think so?John: Well, one of the most spectacular things about it was the special effects. State-of-the-art special effects were the main reason for the success of the previous episodes.Laura: Y ou‟re right. The special effects were amazing! And I like the fact that they created so many fantastic settings and other-worldly costumes, weapons and creatures. Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: What did you think about The Lion King?B: Well…I think this cartoon was pretty good, but not as good as Beauty and the Beast. It‟s a killer flick.A: Really? But I think The Lion King was unbelievably good.B: I thought it was just OK. Why do you think so?A: Well, it‟s so interesting that the lives of the lions were similar to the lives of human beings.B: Y ou‟re right. The murder in The Lion King was almost the same as the murder in the Shakespearean play Hamlet.Model 3 The plot is first-class.John: It‟s kind of cool that they still used the same Star Wars theme song for this movie. Laura: Y eah! It just reminds me of the previous Star Wars scenes.John: I know exactly what you mean! Hearing that song makes me think of the past.Laura: I think the plot was first-class. But I don‟t think the character development was that strong.John: Do you think that has anything to do with the casting of the movie?Laura: No, the casting was great; the actors are excellent, but I think the acting was a little weak. They just didn‟t have a lot of funny or meaningful lines.John: Well, maybe, but I liked the little kid that played “Skywalker”. I can‟t imagine anyone else playing that part.Laura: Y eah, I liked him too. He‟s soooo cute! Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: What do you think about the movie?B: I think the plot was first-class. But I don‟t think the character development was so strong.A: Yes, the characterization was rather weak. Do you think it is because of the casting of the movie?B: No, the cast was strong. But the acting was rather poor. And the lines are not interesting at all. A: Well, maybe. But I liked the heroine of the movie. She is excellent.B: Y eah, I liked her too. She‟s adorable!V. Let‟s TalkAlfred HitchcockAlfred Hitchcock was a British director. His movies frequently show innocent people caught up in situations beyond their control or even understanding.Hitchcock preferred the use of suspense in his movies. In surprise, the director provides the viewer with frightening things. In suspense, the director tells or shows things to the audience which thecharacters in the movie do not know, and then skillfully builds up tension around what w ill happen when the characters finally learn the truth. Hitchcock had a great sense of humor. Once at a French airport, a suspicious customs official looked at Hitchcock‟s passport, which was marked simply PRODUCER. The curious official asked, “And what do you produce?”“Gooseflesh.”replied Hitchcock.Alfred Hitchcock always managed to make a brief appearance in his movies: He was sometimes getting on a bus, or crossing a street, pr walking in front of a store, or across the courtyard in an apartment. However, for the movie Lifeboat in 1944, he was faced with a difficult problem. The entire movie was set in a lifeboat out at sea, and there were only a few characters in the boat. Originally, he wanted to float by as a dead body, but he was afraid he‟d sink! His clever solution was to place a photograph of himself in a newspaper that one of the characters read during the course of the movie.1. A2.C3.DVI. Furthering Listening and Speaking ListeningTask 1: Only One LinePeter has always wanted to be an actor, but never succeeded because he had a hard time memorizing lines. A friend of his told him about a small part in a play. He promised Peter that he could do it because he‟s only have to remember one line. Peter decided to take the part. His only line was, “Listen, I hear the guns roar!”Peter practiced and practiced, “Listen, I hear the guns roar!” On the opening night of the play Peter was very nervous. Backstage, he practiced his line, over and over again, “Listen, I hear the guns roar! Listen, I he ar the guns roar!” Finally came his turn, Peter went onto stage. He heard a loud BOOM and cried out in spite of himself, “WHA T THE HELL WAS THA T?”1.memorizing lines2.remember one line3.I hear the guns roar4. a loud boom5.his lineTask 2: An Interview with J.K. RowlingQ: How did you get the idea for Harry Potter?A: I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and the idea for Harry just fell into my head. At that point it was essentially the idea for a body who didn‟t know he was a wizard. Q: Did you always plan to write Harry‟s story in more than one book? If so, how many?A: I always conceived it as a seven-book series because I decided that it would take seven years, from age eleven to seventeen, inclusive, to train as a wizard, and each of the books would deal with one year of Harry‟s life at the school.Q: Any clues about the next book?A: I don‟t want to i\give anything away, but I tell you that the books are getting darker. Harry‟s going to have quite a bit to deal with as he gets older. Sorry if they get too scary!Q: Of the many things you must have heard people say about Harry Potter, what are some of your favorites?A: My very favorite was from a twelve-year-old Scottish girl who came to hear me read at the Edinburgh book festival. At the end of the festival, the queue for signing was very long. When the girl finally reached me, she said, “I didn‟t W ANT there to be so many people here, because this is MY books!” That is exactly how I feel about my favorite books. Nobody else has a right to know them; let alone like them!1.T2.F3.F4.T5.FTask 3: The Secret of the Next Harry Potter BookThe Harry Potter books rapidly became one of the most in-demand book series among young readers and have earned large sums of money. These were trips to the low hills of England. But to a group of children, aged between four and eight, they were our introduction to a world of adventure. We were determined to reach the summit so that we could prove to our parents and each other that we were capable of doing it. But our determination was also born of the excitement at the scenes of beauty that awaited us. The scenes were in sharp contrast to the narrow streets of our home in central Manchester.

• The influence of art on science can be more subtle but just as important. It can assist in the communication of scientific research. Conceptual-visual skills including drawing, moviemaking, and related perception have led to the knowledge transfer between various disciplines in science. Also, artists can serve as great partners in the exploration of the unknown. They help scientists to see in new ways and understand what is difficult to see by making the invisible visible.

"It is different from Harry Potter courses at other colleges because of its focus on the"what if "questions. The professor leads us to ask questions about the nature and accuracy of history and examine Harry Potter texts for factual information as well as imagined events. Therefore, we can understand the differences between fantasy and reality and the ways in which history is used and misused.2. Our university has many interesting PE classes. Open water swimming course interests me the most. Besides swimming skills, it involves some techniques in diving. But the course only includes practical skills. I think it would be better to integrate some health and nutrition programs into the course. Our university has two half-credit PE courses: Personal Fitness and Fitness Lifestyle Design. The idea of taking PE virtually interests me the most. We are asked to record our heart ratesbefore and after we exercise -- it's supposed to serve as proof that we did in fact complete the assignments. But there is a big loophole. A few students just cheat the online system by inputting the numbers without actually doing the exereise. I think our university needs to set up more barriers to prevent students from cheating the svstem Maybe asking teachers to sign a chart to confirm students did the required exereise will help.1-5 iProduceUnit project 1-4Reference:Hi everyone. The tradition we invented is Spring Equinox Marathon. Yes, marathon sounds a little bit cliche, but as a classic activity, marathon has its advantages. Spring is a season which makes people sleepy. If we hold a Spring Equinox Marathon, students will actively exereise. For one thing, this tradition will benefit their health. And for another, it will also increase students'self-confidence. Once conquering the marathon, students will find daily tasks simple by comparison. We hope this tradition will not only be an opportunity for students to relieve theirstress, but also help them to meet a better self. 1-6 Further listeningNews report 1D D CConversation 1C BD DPassage 1D C D1-7 iEnhanceListening practice 1D B C1-8 Unit testNews report 1D A CConversation 1A C APassage 1C A C新一代大学英语视听说教程2(基础篇)---Unit2 Unit2 2-2 iExplore 1: Listening and speakingPassage 1-1(1)88 pairs / eighty-eight pairs / eighty eight pairs(2) romantic feelings(3) be attracted(4) not attracted(5) desire(6) no Interest(7)249 / two hundred and forty-nine(8) aspects(9) benefit(10) greaterPassage 2-1B A DPassage 2-2(1) value(2) give up(3) occurs(4) standing by(5) recognize/recogniseNews report 1C DNews report 2C D2-3 iexplore 2: Viewing and speaking Viewing and understanding 1C F GViewing and understanding 2(1)success(2) achievement(3) alone(4) occupy(5) caring(6) judge(7) respect(8) temper(9) shout at(10) exchanging(11) win(12) believe(13) doubt(14) miss(15) help(16)accept(17) control(18) friends(19)friends(20) family(21) center/centre(22) a secret(23)shouldn t/should notThinking and speaking 1Reference:1. Instead of encouraging my prejudice against my mom, my friend helped me understand my mom Even though we are in different cities now. she always calls me and checks how I am doing.I had a toxic friend, who always made meuncomfortable. We met each other at an outdoors club. Each time we had a little disagreement, she would shout at me in front of everyone without thinking about how I would feel. Now, I just avoid meeting her.2. A friend in need is a friend indeed. I believe true friends will definitely stand by you and see you through the bad times. But toxic friends, no matter how intimate they usually seem to be, will quickly stay away from you or even laugh at you when you are in trouble.A good friend will sometimes reach you for nothing. You may just spend three hours on the phone discussing all the trivial things in your lives. But toxic friends hardly show up unless they want something from you.2-5 iproduceUnit project 1-5Reference:As we get older, the biggest things that we will remember are the times that we spent with our friends. But do you know people in different countries treat friends differently?Today I'dlike to introduce to you some of the differences between China and Western countries in terms of friendship. I'm planning to approach this topic from three aspects, that is, ways to spend time together. friendship with the opposite sex and ways to deal with toxic friends.First. when spending time with friends, Chinese people prefer to go dining or singing. Chatting over a cup of coffee or playing cards is also an option. Some sports fans may like to watch a sports game together, either on TV or at the scene, or even make a team and play the sports themselves. For some young people, playing online games is a typical way to have fun with friends. Western people spend time with friends in more diversified ways. One of the most popular ways is to have a party with friends -- loud music, games and jokes. They may also have a yard sale, helping each other to get rid of some things they have no use for. Going to a lecture and cooking a meal together are preferred by those, who like to enjoy a peaceful time with friends.Second, in terms of friendship with the opposite sex, Chinese people tend to be more conservative. Two friends of the opposite sex may like each other's online posts frequently and help each other with various problems, but normally they will avoid being together alone and there are still many secrets they prefer to share with a friend of the same sex. By contrast, Western people are more open and direet with friends of the opposite sex. They treat friends of the opposite sex rather equally as same-sex friends. They don't mind being together alone to watch a movie or discuss a frustrating experience at school. They share more secrets with each other than Chinese people do, but this trustful relationship is also likely to develop into a romantic one just as much as it does between Chinese friends.Third, when dealing with toxic friends, Chinese people tend to be more tolerant about their friends'shortcomings, and will express their dissatisfaction more indirectly. When I was in high school. I had a friend who liked to give others various nicknames. Some of the nicknames were funny but some were less acceptable. As friends, we didn't say anything about this even when we felt unhappy about the nicknames he gave us. Differently, Western peple seem to share a set of principles even as friends. So when one of them breaks the principles, their friends will complain about it more directly and an apology is expected. All in all, there is a range of differences betweenfriendships in China and in Western countries due to their different cultures. However, in spite of the differences, friendship is valued and cherished in China andWestern countries just as much as in the rest of the world because of the shared joy and comfort that derive from this very basic human relationship.2-6 Further listeningNews report 1A BConversation 1C B BPassage 1A C C2-7 iEnhanceListening practice 1C C A2-8 Unit testNews report 1A D CConversation 1A B DPassage 1D D C新一代大学英语视听说教程2(基础篇)---Unit3 Unit3 3-2 iExplore1: Listening and speaking Conversation 1D BConversation 2(1) rise(2) pictures(3) a vital tool(4)face-to-face / face to face(5) emotionalPassage 1A A APassage 2ANews report 1D CNews report 2A C3-3 iExplore 2: Viewing and speakingViewing and understanding 1(1) directing(2) experience(3) practice(4) message(5) immediately(6) deliver(7)attention(8) seem(9)recognizes / recognises(10) behavior / behaviour(11) direction(12) focusedViewing and understanding 2(1) trust(2) mindset(3) qualifications(4) positive(5) prospects(6) chargeThinking and speaking 1Reference:I think pre-suasion is an effective way to influence others in our daily life. Professor Robert Cialdini mentions that pre-suasion is the art of influence by capturing attention. Instead of changing what people think, we can direct their attention .A person with skillful method of pre-suasion can get the right chance to influence others effeetively in his dailylife. It is out of question that pre-suasion works wellin business, but I don't think it is an effective way to influence others in our daily life.Just as the three examples Cialdini mentions in the video clip, they are all about business, not about our daily life. In my opinion, to influence others in daily life takes much more than in business. Generally we can be influenced by a genuine heart but not byskillful pre-suasion. After all, those around us, whether they are our friends or our relatives, know who we are quite well. A genuine attitude is much more effective than a skillful method in our daily life.3-4 practice: PronunciationPractice 13-5 iproduceUnit project 1-4Reference:(Li Ming is having a video conversation with his parents two weeks before the summer holiday.)Mother:Honey, summer holiday is coming and I'm going to book your ticket back home. My parents decided that we should travel together regularly in order to build up the family tie as well as helping me accumulate practical knowledge and experiences. At first, we would travel to some other cities in our province. Later we began to travel to other provinces and even other countries. Our trips are usually one week long, which are just long enough for us to relax sufficiently. So far my family have traveled to almost every province in the country and more than 10 foreign countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and Austria,to name just a few.The trips never get boring as we enjoy all kinds of things in the process, including beautiful scenery, interesting people, amazing local customs, and exotic souvenirs. But the most attractive part to me is what happens before the trips, that is, the planning process. Normally at the beginning of a new year. my family will get together and decide on the destination for this year. We will list the places we find interesting and explain the attractions of our choices. After we agree on a particular destination, we will split the work to prepare for the trip -- who will book tickets and hotels, who will pack the luggage, who will gather information of the destination,。

I think they are an efficient tool for communieation. Because we can't see each other when we communicate online. words sometimes fail to express my true feelings. To solve this problem. what I usually do is just add an emoji to the sentences, for examnle the "face with tears of jor" emoji. which will make our conversation lively.·I don't use emojis so much as memes. I get them from various social media websites and from my friends. Some of them are adapted from the facial expressions of famous people. To colleet and use them is a lot of fun. I have a large collection of memes in my mobile phone and use them a lot when chatting online.2·I often use emojis when communicating with my parents. They are open-minded and curious about novelties. They are very familiar with the meanings of different emojis and they derive enormous pleasure from the use of emojis. Sometimes I even get some new and interesting emojis from my parents.·I seldom use emojis when communicating with my parents. I once useda "frowning face" emoji to show my disappointment with somethingrather insignificantThen my parents took it very seriously and immediately called me asking about what had happened. It took mequite a while to explain the emoji to them. From then on. Compared withtraditional ways of communieation like letter writing. the modern ways can spread various types of information swiftly They save a lot of time and bring a lot of convenience. People in remote or underdeveloped areas can quickly know what is happening around or in another part of the world and express their opinions. Secondly. modern communication technologies can bring better edueation overlong distances to remote or underdeveloped areas. which will have a tremendous impaet on the future of those areas. Those areas may be better developed than before.2 If communication is facilitated, people in remote or underdeveloped areas would no longer be isolated from the outside world. After knowing what kind of life people there are leading. they should take the chance to communicate with the outside world and gradually eateh up with it. Ther can promote their local culture. letting the rest of the world know them and trade with them online so that the local economv may flourish. Moreover. they can make use of the educational opportunities provided for them over long distances so that one dav they will no longer lag behind other areas in education. For example. with online education. they can take any program or course present in traditional four-vear universities.1-5 iProduceUnit project 1Reference:Foraccessibilitymass communicationnews forms of languageconvenienceefficiencylifting the language barrier for the deafa blessing for remote areasAgainstnonverbal communicationinvasions of privacya lack of intimacyfalse informationan addiction to mobile phonesthe misuse of the Internetanxiety about falling behind in the digital world 1-6 Further liNews report 1D D C DNews report 2D D BConversation 1C B BPasssage 1C D B C1-7 iEnhanceListening practice lD C B1-8 Unit testNews report 1C B CConversation 1D C BPassage 1A B DUnit 2 Start up young2-2 iExplore 1: Listening and speakingPassage 1A B B B APassage 21)newtools2)our society3)alreadyexists4)hard5)capital6)the passion7)Build a companyConversatio 11)hometown2)restaurant3) broke4) a business planConversatio 2A A D DConversatio 4Reference:·Yes. a good example is Apple Inc. In 1984 Jobs himself introduced the Macintosh. or Mae. However. the first Macs were underpowered and expensive. and they had few software applications - all of which resul disappointing sales. This led to tensions in the company and Jobs had to leave Apple in 1985. Tvele vears later Jobs led the company once again. At that time. Apple was on the verge of collapse. However. this time Jobs simplified the company's produet line, introdueed the iNlae, an egg-shaped. one-piece computer that offered high-speed processing at a relatively modest price. and initiated a trend of high-fashion computers.· No. In modern times. business competition is very fierce Once astart-up makes a wrong decision. it rarely has the opportunity to learn from its mistake and make a comback. a good example is the bankruptey of some bike-sharing companies in China. I think the reasons of their failure are that these companies. such as viaoming Bike(小鸣单车). are the copveats of other big bike-sharing companies and lack their own innovative ideas and proper management. The world has too many problems waiting to be solved. Fortunately. what many entrepreneurs are trving to do is exaetly look for wavs to solve those problems and make life easier for people. For example. Uber puts transit optionsin people's hands by offering the ridesharing and taxi service. Passengers can request and pay for a ride just through an app on a smartphone. Similarly. Airbnb provides a platform to allowindividuals to rent out their homes. rooms or apartments to visitors. making it easy for tourists to find cheap accommodation in desirable locations.MoreoverFacebook builds online communities for people tocommunicate free of charge. These enterprises are perfect examples of understanding the problems in daily life and tackling them in a smart wan.· No, I don't agree with the speaker's opinion. I think to be entrepreneurs essentially means to blaze new trails and inspire others to join them in the journey. What entrepreneurs are trying to do isn't necessarily about the existing problems in real life. They must have a big vision for the future. find new ways and encourage people to share the vision. Google's computer program AlphaGo would be a good example. Culture can be loosely defined as the shared values. beliefs and norms of a specifie group of people. l think the culture in which we grew up helps shape our world view, our decision-making. and even our personality. all these play a significant role in how we do things as a leader.·No. I disagree. A Chinese proverb says. "One type of rice nourishes one hundred tvpes of people." Culture indeed exercises considerable influence on our life and behavior but it does this imperceptibly and equally. If we want to be a good leader, we should make conscious efforts to sharpen our leadership skills. whieh requires far more than just following what culture teaches us. That's why different people from the same culture behave differently when they do things as a leader.2·I think there are two other factors that mav influence one's leadership potential. The first one is our family. When I was little.I lived with my grandparents. They were kind. hard-working and alwavs helpful. They loved the life they were leading and alwavs appreciated what other people did for them. And they never wasted food or anvthing. Like them I always show real appreciation toward others and work efficiently because of the unvillingness to waste mytimeBesides. resources such as valuable contaets. expertise and finances are of equal importance for the development of one's leadership potential.
