My name is Lily, and today I want to tell you about an amazing adventure I had with the magical compass. Itwas a bright and sunny day when I discovered this mysterious compass in my grandma's attic. Little did I know that it would take me on an incredible journey to learn English!Once I held the compass in my hands, it started glowing and spinning. Suddenly, I found myself standing in a beautiful English-speaking country called Wonderland. I was so excited! But there was one problem – I couldn't understand a single word anyone was saying. That's when my adventure truly began.I met a friendly bunny named Benny who spoke English fluently. He became my guide and taught me some useful English phrases. First, he taught me how to greet people. "Hello" and "How are you?" are common greetings in English. I practiced saying them to everyone I met, and they smiled and replied kindly. As I explored Wonderland, I encountered many fascinating creatures. I met a talking tree named Timmy who showed me the colors in English. It was fun to learn that "red," "blue," "green," and "yellow" are the same in English and Chinese. I even found out that the grass in Wonderland is "green" too!Next, I met a wise owl named Oliver who helped me learn about animals. He told me the names of animals like "dog," "cat," "bird," and "elephant." We played a game where I had to guessthe names of the animals in English. It was a bit challenging, but with Oliver's help, I got better and better. In Wonderland, food is delicious and different from what I usually eat. I met a friendly chef named Chef Charlie who taught me the names of some yummy foods. "Pizza," "ice cream," "cake," and "banana" are all words I learned. Chef Charlie even let me taste some of his special dishes – they were scrumptious! One day, I got lost in a big forest. I was scared and didn't know what to do. But then I remembered the magical compass! I held it tight and whispered, "Help me, compass!" Suddenly, it showed me the way back to the town. I was so relieved and grateful for its help. After spending some time in Wonderland, I realized that I had to go back home. Benny, Timmy, Oliver, and Chef Charlie were sad to see me leave, but they were proud of how much I had learned. They gave me a special book filled with English words and phrases as a farewell gift. I promised them that I would keep learning English even when I returned home. When I arrived back in my grandma's attic, the compass stopped glowing and spinning. It had done its magic and helped me on my incredible English adventure. Now, I study Englishevery day, and I can't wait to visit new English-speaking countries in the future. That's the end of my adventure with the magic compass. Learning English was so much fun, and I made wonderful friends along the way. Remember, if you have a dream to learn something new, just believe in yourself and let the magic happen!Goodbye for now, my friends! See you in the next adventure!Love,Lily篇3The Lissound Compass English Picture Books - Level 4Hi there! My name is Emily and I'm a fourth-grader. I love learning English and one of my favorite things is the Lissound Compass English Picture Books. They're these really cool books that help kids like me learn English in a fun way.I just finished level 4 of the books and I wanted to tell you all about it! Level 4 was a bit more challenging than the earlier levels, but it was still really enjoyable. The stories were longer and hadmore advanced vocabulary, but the pictures and activities made it easy to understand. One of the stories I really liked was called "The Magic Treehouse". It was about two kids, Jack and Annie, who had a treehouse that could transport them to different times and places. In this book, they went back to Ancient Egypt and had all sorts of exciting adventures. I learned so many new words related to Egyptian culture, like "pharaoh", "pyramid", and "hieroglyphs". The pictures were amazing too - they really brought the story to life.Another great story was called "The Brave Little Penguin". It was about a young penguin named Pip who got separated from his family and had to go on a big journey to find them again. Along the way, he met all kinds of interesting animals and learned about their habitats and behaviors. I loved how the book taught me about different types of penguins and other Arctic animals in a really engaging way.One of the best things about level 4 was that the books started to introduce more complex grammar concepts, like past and future tenses, as well as things like adjectives and adverbs. But don't worry, it wasn't too difficult! The books explainedeverything really clearly and had lots of fun activities and exercises to help reinforce what I was learning. For example, one exercise had me match up different adjectives with the right nouns, like "fluffy" with "cloud" or "striped" with "tiger". Another activity asked me to fill in the blanks with the correct verb tenses, like "Yesterday, I _____ (walk) to the park." Doing these kinds of activities made grammar way more interesting and helped me remember the concepts better.I also loved all the little games and puzzles scattered throughout the books. There were word searches, mazes, and even some connect-the-dot pictures. Whenever I felt like taking a break from reading, I could flip to one of those fun activities and give my brain a little rest.Overall, I had such a great time with level 4 of the Lissound Compass English Picture Books. The stories were engaging and educational, the activities were fun and helpful, and I learned so much new vocabulary and grammar. I can't wait to move on to level 5 and see what other exciting adventures and lessons await me there! If you're a kid learning English, or if you have kids of your own, I highly recommend checking out these books. They makelearning feel more like playing, and that's the best way to learn if you ask me. Happy reading!篇4My Adventure at the Animal ParkHello, everyone! The park was filled with different animals from all over the world. I was really excited because I love animals. We started our adventure by visiting the giraffes. They were so tall and had long necks. I learned that giraffes are the tallest animals on Earth! I even got to feed them some leaves, and their tongues felt so rough. It was a little bit scary, but also very exciting.Next, we went to see the lions. They were the kings and queens of the animal kingdom! I watched them as they roared loudly and walked around proudly. It was amazing to see theirmajestic manes and strong muscles. I felt like I was in a real-life safari! After that, we visited the penguins. They were so cute and funny! They waddled around and slipped on the ice. I couldn't stop giggling at their silly antics. They splashed water all around, and I even got a little wet! It was like they were performing just for me. I clapped and cheered for them, and they seemed to love the applause. As we continued exploring, we saw zebras, elephants, and even a kangaroo! I was amazed at how many different animals there were. Well, they can swim really fast! They can even jump out of the water and do flips in the air. It's so cool! Dolphins use their tails to swim and their fins to steer. 四年级英语作文at the farm

四年级英语作文at the farm全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1At the farmLast weekend, my family and I went to a farm for a fun day out. It was so exciting because I had never been to a farm before. There were so many animals to see and things to do.When we arrived at the farm, the first thing we saw was a big, red barn. Inside the barn, there were cows, pigs, and chickens. The cows were mooing, the pigs were oinking, and the chickens were clucking. I was so amazed by all the sounds they were making.Next, we went to the goat pen. The goats were so cute and friendly. I even got to feed them some hay. They licked my hand with their rough tongues, and it felt so ticklish! After visiting the animals, we went on a tractor ride around the farm. It was so bumpy and fun. We passed by fields of corn and wheat, and I saw a scarecrow standing guard. I waved at the scarecrow and pretended it waved back at me.We then went to the apple orchard to pick some fresh apples. The apples were so juicy and sweet. I picked a big, red apple from the tree and took a big bite. It was the best apple I had ever tasted! Before we left the farm, we had a picnic by the pond. We ate sandwiches, chips, and drank lemonade. It was so relaxing to sit by the water and listen to the birds chirping.I had so much fun at the farm. I can't wait to go back and visit the animals, go on a tractor ride, and eat more delicious apples. Farms are the best places to have adventures and make memories with my family.篇2At the farmHi everyone! Today I want to tell you all about my super fun day at the farm! 2021年6月大学英语六级阅读理解真题及答案_9

2021年6月大学英语六级阅读理解真题及答案Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In the villages of the English countryside there are still people who remember the good old days when no one bothered to lock their doors. There simply wasn’t any crime to worry about. Amazingly, these happy times appear still to be with us in the world’s biggest community. A new study by Dan Farmer, a gifted programmer, using an automated investigative program of his own called SATAN, shows that the owners of well over half of all World Wide Web sites have set up home without fitting locks to their doors.SATAN can try out a variety of well-known hacking (黑客的) tricks on an Internet site without actually breaking in. Farmer has made the program publicly available, amid much criticism.A person with evil intent could use it to hunt down sites that are easy to burgle (闯入…...行窃).But Farmer is very concerned about the need to alert the public to poor security and, so far, events have proved him right. SATAN has done more to alert people to the risks than cause newdisorder. So is the Net becoming more secure? Far from it. In the early days, when you visited a Web site your browser simply looked at the content. Now the Web is full of tiny programs that automatically download when you look at a Web page, and run on your own machine. These programs could, if their authors wished, do all kinds of nasty things to your computer. At the same time, the Net is increasingly populated with spiders, worms, agents and other types of automated beasts designed to penetrate the sites and seek out and classify information. All these make wonderful tools for antisocial people who want to invade weak sites and cause damage. But let’s look on the bright side. Given the lack of locks, the Internet is surely the world’s biggest (almost) crime-free society. Maybe that is because hackers are fundamentally honest. Or that there currently isn’t much to steal. Or because vandalism ( 恶意破坏) isn’t much fun unless you have a peculiar dislike for someone.Whatever the reason, let’s enjoy it while we can. But expect it all to change, and security to become the number one issue, when the most influential inhabitants of the Net are selling services they want to be paid for.21. By saying “... owners of well over half of all World WideWeb sites have set up home without fitting locks to their doors”(Lines 3-4, Para. 2), the author means that ________.A) those happy times appear still to be with usB) there simply wasn’t any crime to worry aboutC) many sites are not well-protectedD) hackers try out tricks on an Internet site without actually breaking in(C)22. SATAN, a program designed by Dan Fanner can be used ________.A) to investigate the security of Internet sitesB) to improve the security of the Internet systemC) to prevent hackers from breaking into websitesD) to download useful programs and information(A)23. Fanner’s program has been criticized by the public because.A) it causes damage to Net browsersB) it can break into Internet sitesC) it can be used to cause disorder on all sitesD) it can be used by people with evil intent(D)24. The author’s attitude toward SATAN is ________.A) enthusiasticB) criticalC) positiveD) indifferent(C)25. The author suggests in the last paragraph that ________.A) we should make full use of the Internet before security measures are strengthenedB) we should alert the most influential businessmen to the importance of securityC) influential businessmen should give priority to the improvement of Net securityD) net inhabitants should not let security measures affect their joy of surfing the InternetQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.I came away from my years of teaching on the college and university level with a conviction that enactment (扮演角色), performance, dramatization are the most successful forms of teaching. Students must be incorporated, made, so far as possible, an integral part of the learning process. The notion that learning should have in it an element of inspired play would seem to the greater part of the academic establishment merely silly, but that is nonetheless the case. Of Ezekiel Cheever, the most famous schoolmaster of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, his onetime student Cotton Mather wrote that he so planned his lessons that his pupils “came to work as thoughthey came to play,” and Alfred North Whitehead, almost three hundred years later, noted that a teacher should make his/her students “glad they were there.”Since, we are told, 80 to 90 percent of all instruction in the typical university is by the lecture method, we should give close attention to this form of education. There is, I think, much truth in Patricia Nelson Limerick’s observation that “lecturing is an unnatural act, an act for which God did not design humans. It is perfectly all right, now and then, for a human to be possessed by the urge to speak, and to speak while others remain silent. But to do this regularly, one hour and 15 minutes at a time... for one person to drag on while others sit in silence?... I do not believe that this is what the Creator... designed humans to do.”The strange, almost incomprehensible fact is that many professors, just as they feel obliged to write dully, believe that they should lecture dully. To show enthusiasm is to risk appearing unscientific, unobjective; it is to appeal to the students’ emotions rather than their intellect. Thus the ideal lecture is one filled with facts and read in an unchanged monotone. The cult (推崇) of lecturing dully, like the cult of writingdully, goes back, of course, some years. Edward Shils, professor of sociology, recalls the professors he encountered at the University of Pennsylvania in his youth. They seemed “a priesthood, rather uneven in their merits but uniform in their bearing; they never referred to anything personal. Some read from old lecture notes and then haltingly explained the thumb-worn last lines. Others lectured from cards that had served for years, to judge by the worn edges... The teachers began on time, ended on time, and left the room without saying a word more to their students, very seldom being detained by questioners... The classes were not large, yet there was no discussion. No questions were raised in class, and there were no office hours.”26. The author believes that a successful teacher should be able to ________.A) make dramatization an important aspect of students’learningB) make inspired play an integral part of the learning processC) improve students’ learning performanceD) make study just as easy as play(B)27. The majority of university professors prefer the traditional way of lecturing in the belief that ________.A) it draws the close attention of the studentsB) it conforms in a way to the design of the CreatorC) it presents course content in a scientific and objective mannerD) it helps students to comprehend abstract theories more easily(C)28. What the author recommends in this passage is that ________.A) college education should be improved through radical measuresB) more freedom of choice should be given to students in their studiesC) traditional college lectures should be replaced by dramatized performancesD) interaction should be encouraged in the process of teaching (D)29. By saying “They seemed ‘a priesthood, rather uneven in their merits but uniform in their bearing...’” (Lines 3-4, Para. 4), the author means that ________.A) professors are a group of professionals that differ in their academic ability but behave in the same wayB) professors are like priests wearing the same kind of black gown but having different roles to playC) there is no fundamental difference between professors and priests though they differ in their meritsD) professors at the University of Pennsylvania used to wear black suits which made them look like priests(A)30. Whose teaching method is particularly commended by the author?A) Ezekiel Cheever’s.B) Cotton Mather’s.C) Alfred North Whitehead’s.D) Patricia Nelson Limerick’s.Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Take the case of public education alone. The principal difficulty faced by the schools has been the tremendous increase in the number of pupils. This has been caused by the advance of the legal age for going into industry and the impossibility of finding a job even when the legal age has been reached. In view of the technological improvements in the last few years, business will require in the future proportionately fewer workers than ever before. The result will be still further raising of he legal age for going into employment, and still further difficulty in finding employment when hat age has beenattained. If we cannot put our children to work, we must put them in school. We may also be quite confident that the present trend toward a shorter day and a shorter week will be maintained. We have developed and shall continue to have a new leisure class. Already the public agencies for adult education are swamped by the tide that has swept over them since depression began. They will be little better off when it is over. Their support must come from the taxpayer. It is surely too much to hope that these increases in the cost of public education can be borne by the local communities. They cannot care for the present restricted and inadequate system. The local communities have failed in their efforts to cope with unemployment. They cannot expect to cope with public education on the scale on which we must attempt it. The answer to the problem of unemployment has been Federal relief. The answer to the problem of public education may have to be much the same, and properly so. If there is one thing in which the citizens of all parts of the country have an interest, it is in the decent education of the citizens of all parts of the country. Our income tax now goes in part to keep our neighbors alive. It may have to go in part as well to make our neighbors intelligent. We are now attempting to preserve the present generation through Federal relief of the destitute (贫民). Only a people determined to ruin the next generation will refuse such Federal funds as public education may require.31. What is the passage mainly about?A) How to persuade local communities to provide more funds.B) How to cope with the shortage of funds for public education.C) How to solve the rising unemployment problem.D) How to improve the public education system.(B)32. What is the reason for the increase in the number of students?A) The requirement of educated workers by business.B) Raising of the legal age for going to work.C) The trend toward a shorter workday.D) People’s concern for the future of the next generation.(B)33. The public agencies for adult education will be little better off because ________.A) the unemployed are too poor to continue their educationB) a new leisure class has developedC) they are still suffering from the depressionD) an increase in taxes could be a problem(D)34. According to the author, the answer to the problem of publiceducation is that the Federal government ________.A) should allocate Federal funds for public educationB) should demand that local communities provide supportC) should raise taxes to meet the needs of public educationD) should first of all solve the problem of unemployment(A)35. Why does the author say “Only a people determined to ruin the next generation will refuse such Federal funds as public education may require” (Lines 10-11, Para. 3)?A) Only by appropriating adequate Federal funds for education can the next generation have a bright future.B) Citizens of all parts of the country agree that the best way to support education is to use Federal funds.C) People all over the country should make contributions to education in the interest of the next generation.D) Educated people are determined to use part of the Federal funds to help the poor.Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.A new high-performance contact lens under development at the department for applied physics at the University of Heidelberg will not only correct ordinary vision defects but will enhance normal night vision as much as five times, making people’svision sharper than that of cats.Bille and his team work with an optical instrument called an active mirror—a device used in astronomical telescopes to spot newly emerging stars and far distant galaxies. Connected to a wave-front sensor that tracks and measures the course of a laser beam into the eye and back, the aluminum mirror detects the deficiencies of the cornea, the transparent protective layer covering the lens of the human eye. The highly precise data from the two instruments—which, Bille hopes, will one day be found at the opticians (眼镜商) all over the world—serve as a basis for the production of completely individualized contact lenses that correct and enhance the wearer’s vision.By day, Bille’s contact lenses will focus rays of light so accurately on the retina (视网膜)that the image of a small leaf or the outline of a far distant tree will be formed with a sharpness that surpasses that of conventional vision aids by almost half a diopter ( 屈光度). At night, the lenses have an even greater potential. “Because the new lens—in contrast to the already existing ones—also works when it’s dark and the pupil is wide open,” says Bille, “lens wearers will be able to identify a face at a distance of 100 meters”—80 meters farther than they would normally be able to see. In hisexperiments night vision was enhanced by an even greater factor: in semi-darkness, test subjects could see up to 15 times better than without the lenses.Bille’s lenses are expected to reach the market in the year 2000, and one tentative plan is to use the Internet to transmit information on patients’ visual defects from the optician to the manufacturer, who will then produce and mail the contact lenses within a couple of days. The physicist expects the lenses to cost about a dollar a pair, about the same as conventional one-day disposable lenses.36. The new contact lens is meant for ________.A) astronomical observationsB) the night blindC) those with vision defectsD) optical experiments(C)37. What do the two instruments mentioned in the second paragraph (Line 5) refer to?A) The astronomical telescope and the wave-front sensor.B) The aluminum mirror and the laser beam.C) The active mirror and the contact lens.D) The aluminum mirror and the wave-front sensor.(D)38. Individualized contact lenses (Line 7, Para. 2) are lensesdesigned ________.A) to work like an astronomical telescopeB) to suit the wearer’s specific needsC) to process extremely accurate dataD) to test the wearer’s eyesight(B)39. According to Bille, with the new lenses the wearer’s vision ________.A) will be far better at night than in the daytimeB) may be broadened about 15 times than without themC) can be better improved in the daytime than at nightD) will be sharper by a much greater degree at night than in the daytime(D)40. Which of the following is true about Bille’s lenses?A) Their production process is complicated.B) They will be sold at a very low price.C) They have to be replaced every day.D) Purchase orders can be made through the Internet.21. C 22. A 23. D 24. C 25. A26. B 27. C 28. D 29. A 30. A31. B 32. B 33. D 34. A 35. A36. C 37. D 38. B 39. D 40. D。

现代大学英语精读4第四课正文lionsandtigersandbears课文原文带段落Lions and Tigers and BearsBill Buford1.So I thought I'd spend the night in Central Park, and, having stuffed my small rucksack with a sleeping bag, a big bottle of mineral water, a map, and a toothbrush, I arrived one heavy, muggy Friday evening in July to do just that: to walk around until I got so tired that I'd curl up under a tree and drop off to a peaceful, outdoorsy sleep. Of course, anybody who knows anything about New York knows the city's essential platitude—that you don't wander around Central Park at night—and in that, needless to say, was the appeal: it was the thing you don't do. And, from what I can tell, it has always been the thing you don't do, ever since the Park's founding commissioners, nearly a hundred and fifty years ago, decided that the place should be closed at night. Ogden Nash observed in 1961:If you should happen after darkTo find yourself in Central Park,Ignore the paths that beckon youAnd hurry, hurry to the zoo,And creep into the tiger's lair.Frankly, you'll be safer there.2.Even now, when every Park official, city administrator, and police officer tells us that the Park is safe during the day, they all agree in this: only a fool goes there at night.Or a purse snatcher, loon, prostitute, drug dealer, murderer—not to mention bully, garrotter, highway robber.3.I arrived at nine-fifteen and made for the only nocturnalspot I knew: the Delacorte Theatre.Tonight's show was The Taming of the Shrew.Lights out, applause, and the audience began exiting. So far, so normal, and this could have been an outdoor summer-stock Shakespeare production anywhere in America, except in one respect: a police car was now parked conspicuously in view, its roof light slowly rotating. The police were there to reassure the audience that it was being protected;the rotating red light was like a campfire in the wild, warning what's out there to stay away.4.During my first hour or so, I wandered around the Delacorte, reassured by the lights, the laughter, the lines of Shakespeare that drifted out into the summer night.I was feeling a certain exhilaration, climbing the steps of Belvedere Castle all alone, peeking through the windows of the Henry Luce Nature Observatory, identifying the herbs in the Shakespeare Garden, when, after turning this way and that, I was on a winding trail in impenetrable foliage, and, within minutes, I was lost.5.There was a light ahead, and as I rounded the corner I came upon five men, all wearing white T-shirts, huddled around a bench.I walked past, avoiding eye contact, and turned down a path, a narrow one, black dark, going down a hill, getting darker, very dark. Then I heard a great shaking of the bushes beside me and froze.Animal? Mugger? Whatever I was hearing would surely stop making that noise, I thought. But it didn't. How can this be?I'm in the Park less than an hour and already I'm lost, on an unlighted path, facing an unknown thing shaking threateningly in the bushes, and I thought, Shit! What am I doing here? And I bolted, not running, exactly, but no longer strolling—and certainly not looking back—turning left, turning right, all sense of direction obliterated, the crashing continuing behind me,louder even, left, another man in a T-shirt, right, another man, when finally I realized where I was—in the Ramble. As I turned left again, I saw the lake, and the skyline of Central Park South.I stopped. I breathed. Relax, I told myself. It's only darkness.6.About fifteen feet into the lake, there was a large boulder, with a heap of branches leading to it.I tiptoed across and sat, enjoying the picture of the city again, the very reassuring city.I looked around. There was a warm breeze, and heavy clouds overhead, but it was still hot, and I was sweating.Far out in the lake, there was a light—someone rowing a boat, a lantern suspended above the stem.I got my bearings. I was on the West Side, around Seventy-seventh.The far side of the lake must be near Strawberry Fields, around Seventy-second.It was where, I realized, two years ago, the police had found the body of Michael McMorrow, a forty-four-year-old man (my age),who was stabbed thirty-four times by a fifteen-year-old.After he was killed, he was disemboweled, and his intestines ripped out so that his body would sink when rolled into the lake—a detail that I've compulsively reviewed in my mind since I first heard it.And then his killers, with time on their hands and no witnesses, just went home.7.One of the first events in the park took place 140 years ago almost to the day: a band concert. The concert, pointedly, was held on a Saturday, still a working day, because the concert, like much of the Park then, was designed to keep the city's rougher elements out.The Park at night must have seemed luxurious and secluded—a giant evening garden party. The Park was to be strolled through, enjoyed as an aesthetic experience, like a walk inside a painting.George Templeton Strong, the indefatigablediarist, recognized, on his first visit on June 11, 1859, that the architects were building two different parks at once. One was the Romantic park, which included the Ramble, the carefully "designed" wilderness, wild nature re-created in the middle of the city. The other, the southern end of the Park, was more French: ordered, and characterized by straight lines.8.I climbed back down from the rock. In the distance, I spotted a couple approaching.Your first thought is: nutcase? But then I noticed, even from a hundred feet, that the couple was panicking:the man was pulling the woman to the other side of him, so that he would be between her and me when we passed. The woman stopped, and the man jerked her forward authoritatively. As they got closer, I could see that he was tall and skinny, wearing a plaid shirt and black horn-rimmed glasses;she was a blonde, and looked determinedly at the ground, her face rigid. When they were within a few feet of me, he reached out and grabbed her arm.I couldn't resist: just as we were about to pass each other, I addressed them, forthrightly: "Hello, good people!"I said. "And how are you on this fine summer evening?"At first, silence, and then the woman started shrieking uncontrollably—"Oh, my God! Oh, my God!"—and they hurried away.9.This was an interesting discovery. One of the most frightening things in the Park at night was a man on his own.One of the most frightening things tonight was me.I was emboldened by the realization: I was no longer afraid; I was frightening.10.Not everyone likes the Park, but just about everyone feels he should. This was at the heart of Henry James's observations when he visited the Park, in 1904.The Park, in James's eyes, was a failure, but everyone, as he put it, felt the need to "keep patting the Park on the back."By then, the Park'sfounders had died, and the Park, no longer the domain of the privileged, had been taken over by immigrants. In fact, between James's visit and the nineteen-thirties, the Park might have been at its most popular, visited by ten to twenty million a year. The Park in fact was being destroyed by overuse, until 1934, when the legendary Robert Moses was appointed the Park's commissioner.Moses was responsible for the third design element in the Park—neither English nor French, neither Romantic nor classical, but efficient, purposeful, and unapologeticallyAmerican. He put in baseball diamonds, volleyball courts, and swimming pools. He even tried to turn the Ramble into a senior citizen's recreation center, but was stopped by the protesting bird-watchers.The irony was that by the end of the Moses era the Park was dangerous.11.In my new confidence I set out for the northern end of the Park.Near the reservoir, a gang of kids on bicycles zoomed across the Eighty-fifth Street Transverse, hooting with a sense of ominous power.A little later, there was another gang, this one on foot—about a dozen black kids, moving eastward, just by the running track.I kept my head down and picked up my pace, but my mind involuntarily called up the memory of the 1989 incident,in which a young investment banker was beaten and sexually assaulted by a group of kids on a rampage.12.Around Ninety-fifth Street, I found a bench and stopped.I had taken one of the trails that run alongside the Park's West Drive, and the more northern apartments of Central Park West were in view.I sat as residents prepared for bed: someone watching television, a woman doing yoga, a man stepping into the shower.Below me was the city, the top of the Empire StateBuilding peeking over the skyline.George Templeton Strong discovered the beauty of Central Park at night on July 30, 1869, on a "starlit drive" with his wife. But tonight, even if it weren't clouding over, there'd be no stars.T oo much glare. The Park is now framed, enveloped even, by the city, but there was no escaping the recognition that this city—contrived, man-made, glaringly obtrusive, consuming wasteful and staggering quantities of electricity and water and energy—was very beautiful.I'm not sure why it should be so beautiful; I don't have the vocabulary to describe its appeal. But there it was: the city at night, viewed from what was meant to be an escape from it, shimmering.13.I walked and walked. Around one-thirty, I entered the North Woods, and made my way down to what my map would later tell me was a stream called the Loch. The stream was loud, sounding more like a river than a stream. And for the first time that night the city disappeared: no buildings, no lights, no sirens.14.I was tired. I had been walking for a long time.I wanted to unroll my sleeping bag, out of view of the police, and fall asleep.I was looking forward to dawn and being awakened by birds.15.I made my way down a ravine. A dirt trail appeared on my left. This looked promising.I followed it, and it wound its way down to the stream.I looked back: I couldn't see the trail; it was blocked by trees. This was good. Secluded. I walked on. It flattened out and I could put a sleeping bag here. This was good, too. Yes: good. There were fireflies, even at this hour, and the place was so dark and so densely shrouded by the trees overhead that the light of the fireflies was hugely magnified;their abdomens pulsed like great yellow flashlights.16.I eventually rolled out my sleeping bag atop a little rise beside the bridle path by the North Meadow, and then I crawled inside my bag and closed my eyes. And then: snap! A tremendous cracking sound. I froze, then quickly whipped round to have a look: nothing.A forest is always full of noises. How did I manage to camp out as a kid? Finally, I fell asleep.17.I know I fell asleep because I was awake again.Another branch snapping, but this sound was different—as if I could hear the tissue of the wood tearing. My eyes still closed, I was motionless. Another branch, and then a rustling of leaves. No doubt: someone was there. I could tell I was being stared at; I could feel the staring. I heard breathing.18.I opened my eyes and was astonished by what I saw. There were three of them, all within arm's reach. They looked very big.At first I didn't know what they were, except that they were animals.Maybe they were bears, small ones. Then I realized; they were—what do you call them? Those animals that Daniel Boone made his hat out of.19.They weren't moving; I wasn't moving. They just stared, brown eyes looking blankly into my own. They were obviously very perplexed to find me here.Suddenly, I was very perplexed to find me here, too."Imagine this," one of them seemed to be saying. "A grown man sleeping out in Central Park!"20."Obviously, not from New York."21."Hi, guys," I muttered. I said this very softly.22.My voice startled them and they scurried up the tree in front of me.Then they stopped and resumed staring. And then, very slowly, they inched farther up.They were now about forty feet directly above me, and the tree was swaying slightly with their weight.23.It was starting to drizzle.I heard a helicopter, its searchlight crisscrossing the path only ten feet away.So maybe there were bad guys.24.I looked back at the raccoons. "Are there bad guys here?" I asked them.It was stupid to speak. My voice startled them and, directly overhead, one of them started peeing. And then, nature finding herself unable to resist, it started to pour.25.But not for long. The rain stopped. And I fell asleep.I know I fell asleep because the next thing I heard was birds. A natural, naturally beautiful sound.。
