S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush --- often under pressure. City people appear always to hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting”it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some return be this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked up[on differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee they may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a cafe or coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courteous. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.51. Which of the following statements is wrong? __________A. Americans seem to be always under pressure.B. Americans attach less importance to patience.C. Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.D. Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.52. In the fourth paragraph, “a high priority” means __________.A. a less important thingB. a first concernC. a good businessD. an attractive gift53. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is __________.A. criticalB. ironicalC. appreciativeD. objectivePassage 2Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war --- which British prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug, Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US.Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.56. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is __________.A. friendlyB. impoliteC. brotherlyD. a mixture of love and hate57. What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear. We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental exercise is particularly important foryoung children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as "That was a very clever thing you did." or "You are sucha smart child."1. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write your choice on the Answer Sheet.第一部分Passage 1Some cities have planned their transportation systems for ear owners. That is what Los Angeles did. Los Angeles decided to build highways for cars rather than spending money on public transportation. This decision was suitable for Los Angeles. The city grew outward instead of upward. Los Angeles never built many tall apartment buildings. Instead, people live in houses with gardens. In Los Angeles, most people drive cars to work. And every car has to have a parking space. So many buildings where people work also have parking tots.Los Angeles also became a city without a Central Business District (CBD). If a city has a CBD, crowds of people rush into it every day to work. If people drive to work, they need lots of road space. So Los Angeles developed several business districts and built homes and other buildings in between the districts. This required more roads and parking spaces. Some people defend this growth pattern. They say Los Angeles is the city of the future.46. According to the passage, Los Angeles is a city where ______.A. there is no public transportation systemB. more money is spent on highways for carsC. more money is spent on public transportation systemsD. public transportation is more developed than in other cities47. "The city grew outward instead of upward" (Line 1, Para. 2) means ______.A. the city became more spread out instead of growing tallerB. there were fewer small houses than tall buildingsC. rapid development took place in the city centerD. many tall buildings could be found in the city48. According to the passage, if a city has several business districts, ______.A. people won't have to drive to work every dayB. there have to be more roads and parking spacesC. companies would be located in between the districtsD. there would be no need to build parking spaces within the districts49. According to the growth pattern of Los Angeles, homes were mainly built ______.A. in the city centerB. along the main roadsC. around business districtsD. within the business districts50. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the construction of parking spaces in Los AngelesB. the new growth pattern of the city of Los AngelesC. the public transportation system in Los AngelesD. the problem of traffic jams iii Los AngelesPassage 2What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, and Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurementsare used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.51. What makes a scientist according to the passage? ________A. The tools he uses.B. The way he uses his tools.C. His ways of learning.D. The various tools he uses.52. The underlined part in the passage shows_______.A. the importance of informationB. the importance of thinkingC. the difference between scientists and ordinary peopleD. the difference between carpenters and people with other jobs53. A sound scientific theory should be one that _________.A. works not only under one set of conditions at one time, but also under the sameconditions at other timesB. does not allow any changes even under different conditionsC. can be used for many purposesD. leaves no room for improvement54. The author quotes the case of Albert Einstein to illustrate __________.A. that measurements are keys to success in scienceB. that accuracy of mathematicsC. that investigations are important in scienceD. that the mathematical calculations may test his investigations55. What is the main idea of the passage? ________A. The theory of relativity.B. Exactness is the core of science.C. Scientists are different from ordinary people.D. Exactness and ways of using tools are the keys to the making of a scientist.第二部分:Passage 1Perhaps you are going to finish school soon and, like many other students, youwant to further your study abroad. For each question there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. Chose the best answer to each question.Passage OneEverybody knows that the favorite food in the United States is the hamburger. It seems impossible, but people eat 34,000,000,000 hamburgers a year. This is enough to make a line of hamburgers around the world four times. The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast-food restaurant. In these restaurants, people order their food, wait just a few minutes and carry it to their tables themselves. They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home,at work,or in a park. At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. They order the food, and a worker hands it to them through the window. Then they eat in their car.Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches,or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fried potatoes),shakes (a drink made from milk and ice cream),soft drinks, and coffee.Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a company's restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same,if they eat in New York or San Francisco, it will still be the same.11. People can eat fast food at work or in a park.Passage TwoGoing to court can be frightening, especially if you area child. You may have to stand up in the witness box,and swear to tell the truth and answer questions in front of a crowd of adults. It would be even more frightening if you were the victim of a crime and you had to sit in the same courtroom as the person accused of attacking you,for instance. So the law in Britain has made it easier for children to act as witnesses. Children are allowed to tell what they know, from another room in the same courthouse,in this way they do not have to face all those people in the courtroom. It works on a closed-circuit (闭路的)television link, which means that the TV only operates inside the court. The child witness sits in a room with a social worker in front of a TV camera. Everyone in the court room can see the child on a TV screen, but the child can only see the judge and the lawyers who will ask him or her questions. The system has been so successful that it will be extended to more courts this year.Another way to make it easy for a child to act a witness is to set up a screen in the court room around the witness box so that the child cannot see the defendant (被告).Information given by children can be very important to a court trial,butbefore1988 the law did not really recognize that children told the truth. It stated that anything a child said in court had to be  supported by other evidence in the case.16. A child witness,if he were the victim of the crime, would be frightened most by________. A. all the questions he had to answerB. the crowd of adults he had to faceC. the judge and the lawyersD. the person accused of attacking him17. The most important point of the new system that made thi ngs easier for a child witness is that____.A. he does not see the defendantB. he speaks in front of a TV cameraC. he is in another room in the same courthouseD. everyone in the courtroom can see the child18.What does the author think of the new system according to the third paragraph?A. Not very good.B. Very successful.C. Just an experiment.D. Hardly acceptable.19, Has the law always recognized the importance of children's information in court?A. No.B. Yes.C. Not until 1988.D. Before 1988,yes.20. The word “case”in the last paragraph means________.A. a particular situationB. a particular incidentC. a trialD. a boxPassage ThreeAlbeit Einstein had a great effect on science and history, greater than only a few other men have achieved. An American university president oncecommented that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on —but even ordinary man understands now that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War.Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the years following World War I honors were increasingly given to him. He became the headOf the Kaiser Whihem Institute on Theoretical Physics. Compare yourself to the following list to determine whether or notonline classes are a good fit for your personality and habits. 1. Successful distance learners do just as well, if not better, without people looking over their shoulder. While some people need teachers to keep them motivated and on-task, distancelearners are able to motivate themselves. They realize that they will never be face-to-face with the people who give them assignments and grade their work, but theydon ’ t need others to encourage them. The most successful students are self-motivated and set their own goals. 2. Successful distance learners never (or atleast rarely) put off their assignments or wait until the last moment to write theirpapers. These students enjoy the freedom of working at their own pace andappreciate the ability to complete their work in as much time as it takes them, instead of waiting for an entire class. However, they understand that putting offtheir work too often can end up adding months, if not years, to their studies. 3. Successful distance learners have good reading comprehension skills. While mostpeople learn by listening to lectures and taking notes, the majority of distancelearners are expected to master material through reading alone. Although somedistance learning courses offer video recordings and audio clips, most programsrequire that students understand a large amount of information that is onlyavailable through written text. These students are able to comprehend texts at thecollege level without the direct guidance of a teacher. 4. Successful distancelearners can resist constant distractions. Whether it’s the phone ringing off thehook, the kids screaming in the kitchen, or the temptation of TV programs, everyone faces distractions. Successful students know how to filter out theconstant disturbances that threaten their progress. They feel comfortable turningdown an invitation or letting the machine pick up the phone when they knowthere is work to be done. (本题10分)1. This isthe research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of ourbrains are not getting enough exercise-and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, whichrelate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. (The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.) Contraction of front and side parts was observed in some subjects intheir thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and-seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple remedy to the contraction normally associated with age-using the head. The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work ingovernment offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farmworker, bus driver and shop assistant. Matsuzawa’ s findings show that thinkingcan prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head tosupply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need.“The best way to maintain goodblood circulation is through using the brain,” he says.“ Think hard and engagein conversation. Don’ t rely on pocket calculators.” (本题10分)1. ( 单项选择 )The team of doctors wanted to find out __________. For each question there are four choices marked A, B,C and D. Then they eat in their car. Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches,or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fried potatoes),shakes (a drink made from milk and ice cream),soft drinks, and coffee. Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a company's restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same,if they eat in New York or San Francisco,it will still be the same.11. According to the passage, what food do Americans like best?A. Beef.B. Sandwiches.C. Hamburger.D. Fries.12. Where can Americans eat a hamburger?A. At home.B. In a park.C. In their car.D. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Fast-food restaurants are very popular.B. People in the US eat enough hamburgers to make a line around the world.C. Some people eat fast food in parks.D. The system has been so successful that it will be extended to more courts this year.Another way to make it easy for a child to act a witness is to set up a screen in the court room around the witness box so that the child cannot see the defendant (被告). Information given by children can be very important to a court trial,butbefore1988 the law did not really recognize that children told the truth. It stated that anything a child said in court had to be  supported by other evidence in the case.A-10-416. A child witness,if he were the victim of the crime, would be frightened most by________. A. all the questions he had to answerB. the crowd of adults he had to faceC. the judge and the lawyersD. the person accused of attacking him17. 五、阅读理解、完形填空题(共5道小题)41.Online degree programs have come a long way since their early days. Traditional colleges an d universities have developed distance learning programs to accommodate individuals who would not otherwise have the time or funds to earn an advanced degree. Online programs require the same amount of study and work as a classroom program. If you are under the impression that c ourses offered online will be a walk in the park, think again! Online degree programs are often more difficult than traditional university programs due to the fact the work and study is left up to the student. Time management skills are crucial, since there is not a particular time of the day set aside specifically for study. It may take some time to become accustomed to this method of scholarship, but the pros of online classes may outweigh the cons in your situation. The main difference between online degree programs and traditional higher education is the l ocation of learning. Instead of being confined to a stuffy classroom filled with students, these onli ne classes have a more personal feeling. While many students would be hesitant to speak one t o one with a class instructor, online programs find their students more willing to contact their pro fessors via e-mail. This great participation encourages better understanding of the course materia l. Of course, not attending a class also comes with additional barriers. A student must be equipp ed with time management skills in order to succeed in an online class. Students that lack the pr oper time management skills may find themselves overwhelmed with course work at the end of t he semester or falling behind in their studies.Whether you choose to attend a traditional college or university or enroll in an online higher education program, the chances of success are equal. In the end, it is up to you in order to co mplete the course of study and earn your degree. For busy individuals or students wishing to ret urn to school without greatly affecting their everyday lives, an online degree program may be the best option.[共5题](1) According to the passage, the main difference between online degree programs and traditiona l higher education is __________. For each question there are four choices marked A, B,C and D. The most important point of the new system that made things easier for a child witne ss is that____.A. he does not see the defendantB. he speaks in front of a TV cameraC. he is in another room in the same courthouseD. everyone in the courtroom can see the child18.What does the author think of the new system according to the third paragraph?A. Not very good.B. Very successful.C. Just an experiment.D. Hardly acceptable.19, Has the law always recognized the importance of children's information in court?A. No.B. Yes.C. Not until 1988.D. Before 1988,yes.20. The word “case” in the last paragraph means________.A. a particular situationB. a particular incidentC. a trialD. a boxPassage ThreeAlbeit Einstein had a great effect on science and history, greater than only a few other men have achieved. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new outlook,a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on —but even ordinary man understands now that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties,littleA-10-5teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War.Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the years following World War I honors were increasingly given to him.
