Nature与科幻百年神话里的童话英国的《自然》(Nature)杂志创刊于一八六九年,百余年来,它成为一个科学神话,被视为“世界顶级科学杂志”。
它在中国科学界更是高居神坛,甚至流传着“在《自然》上发表一篇文章,当院士就是时间问题了”之类的说法。
据二零零六年《自然》杂志上题为《现金行赏,发表奖励》(Cash for papers:putting a premium on publication)的文章说,当年中国科学院对一篇《自然》杂志上的文章给出的奖金是二十五万元人民币,而中国农业大学的类似奖赏高达三十万元人民币以上,这样的“赏格”让《自然》杂志自己都感到有点受宠若惊。

边缘上的主流科幻在中国,基本上还处于小圈子自娱自乐的状态中,在西方发达国家,情形可能稍好一些,但它在文学领域仍一直处于边缘,从未成为主流;若与科学相比,当然更是大大处于弱势地位。
在这种情形下,《自然》杂志开设科幻小说专栏,对科幻人士无疑是一种鼓舞,他们很愿意向外界传达这样一个信息:科幻尽管未能进入文学主流,却得到了科学界的接纳。
于是在极短时间内,它就汇集了欧美一批有影响力的科幻作家,《自然》的“未来”专栏隐隐有成为科幻重镇之势。
不过,科幻虽然在文学和科学两界都屈居边缘,在它自己的领域里,当然也有主流和边缘之分,这主要是从创作的思想纲领,或者说作品所表现出来的思想倾向而言的。
从十九世纪末开始,儒勒·凡尔纳(J. Verne,1828-1905)那种对科学技术一厢情愿的颂歌走向衰落,以威尔斯一系列影响深远的科幻创作为标志,主流的科幻创作就以反思科学、揭示科学技术的负面价值、设想科学技术被滥用的灾难性后果为己任了。
这种主流倾向在科幻小说和科幻电影中都有极为充分的表现,该倾向最明显的特征之一,就是在十九世纪末以来较有影响的科幻作品中,几乎找不到任何光明的未来世界。
在《Nature杂志科幻小说集》一书中,编者亨利·吉—他正是《自然》杂志“未来”专栏的现任主持人—并未对入选的小说进行主题分类,而笔者愿意试着将六十六篇小说按主题分类归纳如下:第一个主题“未来世界·反乌托邦”,其下有十五篇作品。
在一个多世纪以来反思科学的科幻创作主流中,反乌托邦是非常重要的表现手法之一。
基本套路是,通过表现黑暗、荒诞的未来世界和社会—这样的社会总是由高度发达的科学技术催生和支撑的,来展示科学技术被过度滥用的严重后果。
在这些作品中,未来的高科技社会正是如此:性、爱、学术等都发生了畸变,个人隐私荡然无存,身份会被轻易窃取,高超的技术手段摧毁了真实的艺术。
许多我们此刻正在热烈讴歌的新技术,比如3D打印之类,都引发了荒谬的后果。
即使在个别作品对技术的乐观想象中,人类的精神也是空虚的。
有的作品甚至干脆让人类灭亡了。
第二个作品较多的主题“机器人·人工智能”,包括十一篇作品。
本来这个主题很容易催生对未来科学技术的乐观想象,但在反思科学的主流纲领指导下,有不止一篇作品让人直接联想到科幻影片《西蒙妮》(Simone,2002)。
人和机器人的界限一旦模糊了,机器人的“人权”问题就会提上议事日程。
而当机器人介入体育竞赛之后,人类的体育运动就难免走向终结。
已经让一部分人欣喜若狂,同时让另一部分人恐惧万分的所谓“奇点临近”—预言二零四五年电脑芯片植入人体、人机结合的技术突破将导致人工智能超常发展的前景,当然也得到了某些作者的青睐。
接下来的三个主题,“脑科学”有三篇、“克隆技术”有两篇,都想象了用脑手术惩罚罪犯、读心术、超级计算机智能操控人脑的情形。
正如我们所预料的,作品中出现了对克隆技术滥用导致的荒诞前景。
“永生·吸血鬼”是一个中国读者相对不熟悉的主题。
之所以将吸血鬼归入这一主题,是因为在西方的吸血鬼故事中,吸血鬼通常都是永生的。
这个主题的三篇作品隐隐有着某种颓废的气息,这当然与吸血鬼和反乌托邦都很相容—二零一三年的吸血鬼影片《唯爱永生》(Only Lovers Left Alive)特别适合与这三篇作品参照。
第六个主题“植物保护主义”虽然只有两篇作品,却都值得一提。
这两篇作品都想象了人与植物进行带有思想感情色彩的沟通。
其中“爸爸的小失误”的作者,居然是一个只有十一岁的小女孩—那些梦寐以求要在《自然》这家“世界顶级科学杂志”上发文章的人看了会不会吐血?另一篇则将科学界尔虞我诈、勾心斗角作为故事的背景。
第七个主题“环境·核电污染”,很自然地出现了对地球环境恶化的哀歌。
事实上,当下地球环境持续污染和恶化的现实,必然使得任何作者—无论他或她对当下的科学技术多么热爱—都无法对未来做出任何乐观的判断。
其中《切尔诺贝利的玫瑰》当然是涉及核电污染的作品。
第八个主题“地外文明”,是科幻作品的传统主题,这个主题下有七篇作品。
其中不出所料地出现了对火星以及更遥远的外星文明的想象,有的作品也表现出对外星文明的戒心。
值得一提的是《被拒绝的感情》,这篇小说采用了“虚拟评论”的形式—表面上是对一部作品的评论,而实际上这部被评论的作品并不真实存在。
《Nature杂志科幻小说集》中有几篇作品都采用了这种方式(比如《最后被解放的普罗米修斯》)。
这种方式曾被波兰著名科幻作家斯坦尼斯拉夫·莱姆(S. Lem)初版于一九七一年的短篇小说集《完美的真空》全面使用。
这种“虚拟评论”形式的好处是,既能免去构造一个完整故事的技术性工作,又能让作者天马行空的哲学思考和议论得以尽情发挥。
第九个主题“时空旅行·多重宇宙”也是科幻的传统主题,这个主题下有三篇作品。
其中想象了跨时空的犯罪行为、在多重宇宙中的“分身”,以及这种技术普遍采用之后的荒诞前景。
但基本上没能超出《救世主》(The One,2001)和《环形使者》(Looper,2012)这两部科幻影片的想象范围。
最后,第十个主题“未来世界·科技展望”之下,又有多达十六篇作品,这当然是因为将一些不易明确归类的作品都放入其中了。
这里既有对未来科学技术的一般想象,比如生物技术、飞行设备、城市交通管理之类,也有对诸如世界的不确定性、人类的进化等等的哲学讨论。
作者们想象了药物对爱情的作用(《爱情药剂》),也想象了对生命的设计(《我爱米拉:一次美丽的遭遇》)。
有一篇小说中的某些情景让人联想到科幻影片《超验骇客》(Transcendence,2014)。
这个单元的最后几篇作品,是对未来某些技术的想象片段,也可以说是“凡尔纳型”的作品。
娱乐中的科学一本科学界心目中的“世界顶级科学杂志”,却荣膺了欧洲“最佳科幻出版刊物”,如此巨大的反差,其实却是大有渊源的—《自然》杂志与科幻的不解之缘,是该杂志最初两任主编遗留下来的传统,也可以说就是这本杂志的遗传因子。
一八六九年,天文学家诺曼·洛克耶(N. Lockyer,1835-1920)成为《自然》杂志首任主编,他在这一职位上长达五十年之久。
洛克耶在欧洲天文学界的名头,主要来自他通过分析日珥光谱推断出新元素“氦”的存在。
除了专职进行太阳物理学前沿研究,与许多科学家一样,他晚年对科学史萌生了浓厚兴趣,在《自然》上发表了大量这方面的文章。
《自然》杂志最早的科幻源头,可以追溯到洛克耶一八七八年为凡尔纳英文版科幻小说集写的书评。
在那篇书评中,洛克耶认为凡尔纳小说最具价值的地方,在于能够准确向青少年传授科学知识。
