科技英语翻译中的长句翻译法概述

一、科技英语的文体特点

科技英语是二十世纪五十年代出现的一种新的学术语体,是专业英语中学术英语的分支。我们可以用八个字来概括科技英语文章的文体特点:清晰、准确、精炼、严密(韩其顺,1988)。与非科技英语文体相比,它具有词义多、长句多、被动句多、词性转换多、非谓语动词多、专业性强等特点。

二、科技英语长句的翻译原则

1.要分清层次,突出重点。

英语科技文章中的长句往往表达多层意思,因此必须弄清有几个层次,抓住中心层次。

2.逻辑严密,前后呼应。

英语长句结构复杂,译成汉语时,形成若干个小句,加之顺序变动,词性转换,正反表达诸因素,力求译文的逻辑严密性至关重要。

三、科技英语长句翻译法实践

科技英语长句的翻译方法一般包括分译法、顺译法、倒译法和变序法。

1.分译法

英语长句中有些句子成分的关系松散,按原句照译会使句子过于庞杂臃肿,故可以把英语的某些句子成分单独译为一个汉语

句子。例如:

Concrete is artificial stone made from Portland cement and inert filler materials called aggregates, which are mixed with water to a plastic consistency and placed in forms to harden and gain strength.

混泥土是由硅酸盐水泥和不起化学作用的填补料一起制成

的人造石;水泥和骨料加水搅拌达到可塑的稠度后,浇入模壳,待

其逐渐硬化而增加强度。

2.顺译法

当英语长句的表达顺序与汉语的表达顺序一致时,可不改变

原文语序和语法结构,译成汉语,但并不是每一个词都按照原句

顺序。例如:

All commercial iron and steel contains iron as chief constituent, but the percentages of carbon and other elements and the methods by which iron and steel is produced, as well as the processes to which may be subjected, so change the characteristic properties that there are many distinct forms of iron and steel, some of which have properties so different as to appear like different metals.

所有商用钢铁都以其含铁为主要成分,但由于其他元素的含

量不同,钢铁冶炼方法不同以及加工过程不同,从而改变了它们

的特性,以至于有多种不同的钢铁,其中有些钢铁的特性极不相

同,看上去就像不同的金属一样。

3.倒译法

有些英语长句的表达顺序与汉语不同,甚至相反。汉译时须

逆着原文顺序,把原文后面的内容放在译文的前面。例如: The technical possibility could well exist, therefore, of nationwide integrated transmission network of high capacity, controlled by computers, inter-connected globally by satellite and submarine cable, providing speedy and reliable communications throughout the world.

建立全国统一的大容量的通信网络,由计算机进行控制,通

过卫星和海底电缆在全球从事快速可靠的通信服务,这种可能性

从技术上来讲是完全存在的。

4.变序法

有的英语长句语法成分繁多,层次复杂。翻译时须打乱原文

顺序,有的可以顺着原文语序,有的则必须逆着原文语序,按照汉

语表达习惯,正确表达原文的层次关系和语义关系。例如: Where an enterprise is willing and able to develop the finished products that are not subject to the unified operation by the State, through joint efforts with the industrial enterprises in Tianjin, particularly in respect of machinery and electronic products and refined chemical products, by means of technology transfer, introduction of

technical personnel, technical assistance and economic support, and to provide for foreign companies the finished products through the sales channel of the foreign parties, they may apply to the Municipal Commission of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade for the expansion of the business of joint development.

大量使用长句结构是科技英语文章的特点之一。翻译中为了能体现出作者的意图、准确传递信息、掌握一定的翻译技巧,处理好长句的译法,显得十分重要。
