It's a topic of common –– and often comic ––contemplation, but it has also become a serious policy issue for colleges and students in the United States. After years of concentrated effort to raise the academic achievement of girls, who in previous decades had often received less attention in the classroom and been steered away from college-prep courses, the nation can brag that female students have progressed tremendously. Though still underrepresented in calculus and other advanced-level science and math courses in high school, women now outnumber men applying to and graduating from college –– so much so that it appears some colleges are giving male applicants an admissions boost. As a result, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is examining whether colleges are engaging in widespread discrimination against women in an effort to balance their male and female populations.Consider some of the numbers at leading schools: At Vassar College in New York State, a formerly all-women's college that is still 60% female, more than two-thirds of the applicants last year were women. The college accepted 35% of the men who applied, compared with 20% of the women. Locally, elite Pomona College accepted 21% of male applicants for this year's freshman class, but only 13% of female applicants. At Virginia's College of William & Mary, 7,652 women applied for this year's freshman class, compared with 4,457 male applicants. Yet the numbers of each who gained admittance were nearly the same. That's because the college accepted 45% of the men and only 27% of the women.A 2007 analysis by U.S. News & World Report, based on the data sent by colleges for the magazine's annual rankings, found that the admissions rate for women averaged 13 percentage points lower than that for men. But percentages don't tell thewhole story. It could be that the men were stronger candidates, or they might have applied in areas of engineering and science where women's numbers are still lower. But such justifications, even if true, are unlikely to fully explain these numbers. At schools such as the University of California, where admissions rely overwhelmingly on statistical measures of academic achievement such as grades and test scores, the disparities don't appear. Far more women than men applied to UCLA ––the UC's most selective campus ––last year. The university accepted about the same percentage of each, with a slight edge to the women. As a result, the freshman class has close to 800 more women than men.In recent years, several college leaders have admitted that their institutions give a boost to male applicants to maintain gender balance on campus. Most students of either sex, they point out, prefer such balance. If Vassar accepted equal percentages of each sex, women would outnumber men by more than 2 to 1.Jennifer Delahunty Britz, the dean of admissions at Kenyon College in Ohio, a formerly all-male school, brought the matter to broad public attention in 2006 with an Op-Ed article for the New York Times describing the dilemma of her admissions office. "What messages are we sending young women that they must . . . be even more accomplished than men to gain admission to the nation's top colleges?" New York Times has long favored allowing colleges to use race as an admissions factor in order to diversify student populations. She also wrote that exposure to people of different backgrounds and viewpoints better educates all students –– not just those given a leg up. We are not in favor of accepting underqualified or clearly inferior students for the sake of diversity. But most colleges are inundated with applications from students who more than meet their standards; the differences among many of them are slight. It makes sense for colleges to pick a balanced population from within this group. At the same time, admissions officers should avoid rigid notions of what constitutes enough men on campus. It's not harming UCLA, or destroying college social life, to admit somewhat more women than men.Even if the Civil Rights Commission finds pervasive gender discrimination inadmissions, there's little it could do about the situation. Such discrimination –– though not racial discrimination –– is legal for undergraduate admissions at private, nonprofit colleges, even those that receive federal funding. Commission documents on the inquiry suggest that colleges could find more "gender-neutral" ways of balancing their student numbers, perhaps by offering programs and extracurricular activities that attract men. Those might work for some schools but won't change the overall scenario. Not with college populations composed of 57% women nationwide. The issue we'd like the Commission on Civil Rights to investigate is: What's happening with the education of U.S. boys? Why are so few of them applying to and graduating from college?Theories and arguments abound. Some say that boys are more active and thus less able to sit still for long periods –– and as a result, more likely to be categorized as having attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder or needing special education. A 2008 study by researchers at Northwestern University found that when girls are involved in a language-related task –– such as reading –– they show more activity in areas of the brain involved in encoding language. Boys use more sensory information to do linguistic tasks. The study suggests boys might do better if they were taught language and arts in different ways. Race is a factor as well. The gender gap is starker among African American and Latino students. There may be no one reason –– or solution. But figuring out ways to help boys achieve in school is a better response to the gender gap than making it easier for them to get into college later.1. As a result of the effort to raise the academic achievement of the girls for years, the girls have exceeded boys tremendously in all courses in colleges except calculus and other advanced-level science and math courses.2. Female students are facing the low admission rate because some colleges areengaging in discrimination against women to achieve the balance of their male and female populations.3. Although the men were traditionally considered stronger candidates in areas of engineering and science, the admission rate for men in these areas is still lower than that for women.4. Women have outnumbered men in gaining admittance in UCLA’s freshman class this year because their admissions greatly rely on grades and test scores of their applicants.5. Some college leaders hold that most college students prefer their policy of maintaining gender balance by admitting equal percentages of each sex.6. The dilemma of the dean of admissions at Kenyon College is whether to use gender as an admissions factor in order to achieve gender balance or use race as an admissions factor in order to diversify student populations.7. According to Jennifer Delahunty Britz, it is reasonable for colleges to pick a balanced population from the candidates who more than meet their standards.8. Actually the Civil Rights Commission can do little to change the situation of discrimination in college admission because such discrimination is ____________________________________________________________________.9. The study shows that in doing linguistic tasks the boys use more sensory information, the girls show more _________________________________________.10. Despite various theories and arguments about why so few boys apply to and graduate from college, the better solution to the problem is to____________________________________________________________________. 备战2021年高考英语考前时事热点话题阅读热点05 人的身心健康及智力发展一、阅读理解1About the time that schools and others quite reasonably became interested in seeing to it that all children, whatever their background, were fairly treated, intelligence testing became unpopular. Some thought it was unfair to minority children. Through the past few decades such testing has gone out of fashion and many communities have indeed forbidden it.However, paradoxically(自相矛盾的), just recently a group of black parents filed a lawsuit (诉讼) in California c laiming that the state’s ban on IQ testing discriminates(歧视) against their children by denying them the opportunity to take the test. (They believe, correctly, that IQ tests are a valid method of evaluating (评估) children for special education classes.) The judge, therefore, reversed, at least partially his original decision. And so the argument goes on and on. Does it benefit or harm children from minority groups to have their intelligence tested? We have always been on the side of permitting, even promoting such testing. If a child of any color or group is doing poorly in school it seems to us very important to know whether it is because he or she is of low intelligence, or whether some other factor is the cause. What school and family can do to improve poor performance is influenced by its cause. It is not discriminative to evaluate either a child’s physical condition or his intellectual level.Unfortunately, intellectual level seems to be a sensitive subject, and what the law allows us to do varies from time to time. The same fluctuation (起伏) back and forth occurs in areas other than intelligence. Thirty years or so ago, for instance, white families were encouraged to adopt black children. It was considered discriminative not to do so.And then the style changed and this cross-racial adopting became generally unpopular, and social agencies felt that black children should go to black families only. It is hard to say what are the best procedures. But surely good will on the part of all of us is needed. As to i ntelligence, in our opinion, the more we know about any child’s intellectual level, the better for the child in question.1. Why did the intelligence test become unpopular in the past few decades?A. Its validity was challenged by many communities.B. It was considered discriminative against minority children.C. It met with strong opposition from the majority of black parents.D. It robbed the black children of their rights to a good education.2. The author believes that intelligence testing .A. may ease racial discrimination in the United StatesB. can encourage black children to keep up with white childrenC. may seriously worsen racial discrimination in the United StatesD. can help black parents make decisions about their children’s education3. The author’s opinion of child adoption seems to be that.A. no definite rules can be prescribedB. white families should adopt black childrenC. adoption should be based on IQ test resultsD. cross-racial adoption is to be advocated4. Child adoption is mentioned in the passage to show that ______.A. good will may sometimes complicate racial problemsB. social surroundings are vital to the healthy growth of childrenC. intelligence testing also applies to non-academic areasD. American opinion can shift when it comes to sensitive issues【答案】1. B 2. D 3. A 4. D【解析】这是一篇说明文。

That was mainly because children began working at an early age to help provide for the family. But with the changing times and with the cost of living getting higher every single year, having a big family is no longer considered to be a practical option. In fact, more couples consider that they have only one child and some do not have any desire to become parents at all.According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, by 1986, women aged 40 to 44 years, were considerably more likely to have given birth to two children than three children (36% vs. 27%) or four or more children (19%). However, taken together, women were still more likely to have had three or more children than to have had two children (46% vs. 36%).In recent years, women were more likely to have had two children than three or more children –a trend that was most marked in the most recent period (38% vs. 25% in 199638% vs. 22% in 2006). These days, most families in Australia have two children. But the number of women who hadGIVEN BIRTH TOa single childINCREASED PROGRESSIVELYfrom only 8% in 1981 to 13% in 2006.The U.S. Census Bureau states that there are approximately 14 million only children in America today. 成功的含义英语作文有人说自信是成功的第一步,大家觉得呢?成功是什么样的定义呢?店铺特地为大家整理了成功的含义英语作文,欢迎大家阅读。

成功的含义英语作文篇1:什么是成功 What is SuccessWhat is the definition of success? I believe different people will have different opinions about it. If anyone asks me what is success for me, I will tell him progress is success for me. I can have small goal or great aim in my whole life. If the goal what I set is too large for me, I will not taste the feeling of success. Or I always set small goals, so I will feel success all the time, which may make me become autophilia and without ambitions. Therefore, I think if I can be better than yesterday or last time, then I am successful.

2:My definition of successWhat is success? It is what everyone is longing for.Sometimes success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I amstanding here giving my speech is somehow also success. However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes verycomplicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success isthe realization of people’s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many peoplewho are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization ofpeople’ hopes and ideals.Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope. What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sureevery success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make asuccessful life!Wish you all good success!成功的含义英语作文篇3:决定成功的三种性格Three Personalities Lead to SuccessThere are no two identical people exist in the world, but most successful people are similar in many ways. Good character is the foundation of success. Most of successful people are modest, diligent and creative etc. In my opinion, being confident, honest, and persevere are the three important keys to the door of success.

1Do People's Personalities Change Over Time?Hi there! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. Today I want to talk to you about something I've been thinking about a lot lately - whether people's personalities stay the same as they get older or if they can change.I've been wondering this because I feel like some of my friends act pretty different now compared to when we were little kids. Like my best friend Sophia used to be really shy and quiet when we were in preschool. She wouldn't really talk much and was kind of scared of everything. But now that we're in 4th grade, she's one of the loudest and most talkative people I know! She's not shy at all anymore and she's always cracking jokes to make everyone laugh. Then there's my friend Michael who was the complete opposite when we were little. He never stopped talking and was super hyper and energetic all the time. The teachers were always getting onto him for goofing around too much. But now he'sway more chill and doesn't get in trouble for being disruptive anymore. It's like he did a total 180!Seeing how differently some of my friends act now compared to when we were little kids made me start thinking - do people's basic personalities stay the same as they get older? Or can their personalities drastically change over time? I decided to investigate and do some research to try to find an answer.First, I asked my parents what they thought. My mom said that she believes personalities can definitely change, especially when someone is young and still developing into their adult self. She said she was really shy as a kid just like Sophia was. But then when she got to high school she decided she wanted to be more outgoing, so she kind of forced herself to come out of her shell more. And by the time she was in college she was a total social butterfly! My dad agreed that he's changed a lot too over his life, but he thinks personalities tend to settle and solidify more once you become an adult.Next, I asked my teacher Mrs. Robinson her thoughts since she has a lot of experience working with kids of different ages. She said it's pretty common for kids' personalities to seem quite different as they progress through elementary school and into middle school compared to when they were in preschool orkindergarten. She thinks this is because young kids are still figuring out who they are and their preferences and behaviors can shift a lot during those early years. But she's noticed that most people's core personalities don't drastically change too much once they reach high school age.I also looked online to see what experts say about personality changes over time. From what I found, it seems like there's still some debate but a lot of psychologists believe our personalities remain relatively stable starting around age 30. Before then, it's more common for someone's personality traits to change as they have new experiences, face new social situations, and develop new interests that could influence how they behave. For example, a naturally curious kid could become more extraverted and talkative as a teenager if they join the debate team and gain more confidence in themselves. Or a really energetic and rambunctious young child may start exhibiting a calmer, more introverted personality if they take up a solitary hobby like reading or art. But once we become adults our personalities tend to "set" more unless we go through really major life events or make a focused, conscious effort to change certain personality traits. After doing all my research, I've come to the conclusion that yes, people's personalities can change over time at least to some degree. We might start off acting one way as young kids, but then our core personalities could evolve and even shift pretty drastically as we get older and encounter new experiences and environments that shape who we are. However, it also seems like at a certain point our personalities become more firmly established and it gets harder to drastically change them without purposefully working on it. So while my outgoing friend Sophia may always retain hints of the shy, quiet girl she once was, it doesn't seem like she'll just spontaneously become bashful again out of the blue now that she's blossomed into such a confident person.篇2Can People's Personalities Really Change? An Essay by a KidHave you ever noticed how some people seem to stay exactly the same their whole lives, while others go through major personality changes as they get older? I think about stuff like this a lot. Like, is a mean kid destined to always be a big jerk? Or can someone's personality do a total 180 and them become the nicest person ever? It's an interesting question to ponder. My grandma is a prime example of someone whose personality shifted big time over the decades. When she was young, she was apparently a total rebel. She was the type who did whatever she wanted, didn't care what others thought, and was always getting into trouble. My mom has some hilarious stories about the crazy antics Grandma used to pull when she was a kid and teenager. But now, Grandma is like the sweetest, most proper old lady you'll ever meet. She is always fussing overme and my siblings, making sure we have enough to eat and that we're being polite. She never misses church and she tends her garden daily without fail. Her life revolves around doing little nice things for others. It's hard to believe she was once a troublemaker!I think a lot of Grandma's personality transformation happened when she had kids of her own. My mom said Grandma really calmed down and became responsible after that. Having my mom and her siblings made Grandma realize she had to grow up and be a good role model. So her personality shifted from a rebel to a caregiver and nurturer. Then there's my Uncle Mike who has stayed virtually the same goofy, loud, life-of-the-party kind of guy since we've known him. He's pretty much a big kid himself even though he'slike 40 years old now. Uncle Mike is always cracking jokes, doing silly voices, and just being totally zany and over-the-top. We never know what bizarre stunt he's going to pull next.I've heard stories from my parents about how Uncle Mike was the wild class clown all throughout school. He was constantly getting in trouble for being the instigator of pranks and disrupting class with his wacky behavior. But he's still that same big goof to this day, decades later. I can't imagine Uncle Mike ever growing up to be a serious, calm, mature person. His personality is just too ingrained at this point. My dad is another example of someone whose core personality traits have pretty much stayed the same over time. For as long as I can remember, my dad has been this total workaholic who is always stressing out about his job and providing for our family. He works crazy long hours during the week, brings work home on weekends, and is constantly checking his phone and email for incoming messages from his bosses and clients. My parents said Dad was pretty much the exact same way when they were first dating - the ultimate workaholic who struggled to strike that work-life balance. Dad's intense drive and ambition hasn't changed at all since he was a young adult. Ifanything, he's even more of a workaholic now that he's older because he's got a wife and kids to support.Based on the examples in my life, I think some people's personalities are pretty locked in from an early age. Like with my Uncle Mike, he was born as a total goofball and he'll probably be cracking dad jokes when he's 100 years old. And driven workaholics like my dad will likely stay that way till the day they retire (or probably even after retirement knowing my dad!).But for others, I do think personalities can morph dramatically over the course of a lifetime. My grandma is the perfect case study of how someone can go from a rebel to a traditional, nurturing homebody type. The responsibilities and life experiences we gain as we get older really alter our mindsets and perspectives. Big life events like having kids, losing a loved one, or going through a hardship often transform how we see the world and approach life.So in conclusion, while I believe some people's quintessential personality traits tend to stick around, virtually everyone goes through some level of personal growth and change as they age and face new chapters and challenges. Our personalities aren't set in stone - they continuously evolve throughout our lifetimes, getting shaped by our circumstancesand environments. But how much we change or don't change comes down to the individual. We all march to the beat of our own personal growth!篇3Can People's Personalities Really Change?Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I'm 10 years old. Today I want to talk about an interesting question – can people's personalities actually change as they get older? This is something I've been wondering about a lot lately.Personality is what makes each person unique and different from others. It's all about the mix of traits that shape how we think, feel and behave. Some people are naturally outgoing and loud, while others are more reserved and shy. Some people are creative freethinkers, while others prefer following rules and routines. You get the idea!So if personality is such a core part of who we are, can it really change over time? Or are we basically "stuck" with the same personality forever once it gets established? I've asked some of my friends and family about this, and I've heard different opinions. Let me share some of their points of view.My best friend Sophia thinks personalities can definitely change. She said, "Look at your parents or other adults you know. Don't they sometimes act really different now compared to when they were kids? My mom used to be this super quiet, shy person. But now she's way more outgoing and confident after becoming a teacher and being around people all the time." I can see what Sophia means. My own parents seem different in some ways compared to when I was really little. On the other hand, my older brother Jack disagrees. He told me, "While our interests, habits and behaviors might evolve, I think our core personalities stay pretty much the same. If you were an introvert as a kid, you'll probably always be somewhat introverted deep down, even if you get more sociable over time." Jack makes a fair point too. I can think of adults who still act a lot like they did when they were my age, at least in terms of their basic personality style. My grandpa offered yet another perspective. He said some major life events or challenges can definitely change people's personalities in big ways, even later in life. He used to be really carefree and happy-go-lucky when he was younger. But after he served in a war and went through some other tough times, hebecame much more serious and anxious about things. So maybe our core traits can shift depending on what we experience? After thinking it all over, here's what I tend to believe. I think our personalities do stabilize and settle quite a bit by the time we become teenagers and adults. Our fundamental traits, tendencies, and ways of seeing the world get pretty ingrained during childhood. Whether you're an extrovert, a thinker, a feeler, an adventurer or a homebody – those kinds of core personality styles seem tough to completely change. However, I also believe our personalities aren't completely fixed and rigid. We can definitely evolve, adapt and adjust our personas over the long term based on new experiences, relationships, accomplishments and challenges. Maybe an initially shy person becomes more socially confident later in life. Or someone pretty pessimistic becomes more positive and optimistic. Our interests, values and self-perceptions can transform quite a bit too.Ultimately, I suspect personalities involve both stable and malleable components. There's this underlying, lasting foundation that makes us uniquely "us". But then there are layers on top that can flex, expand and shift to varying degrees as we grow, develop and encounter new chapters in life. Like a treetrunk and branches – the core stays rooted, but the outer form can adapt to the changing winds and seasons. Those are just my 10-year-old thoughts though! This is obviously a complex issue that even experts disagree about. I'm really curious to hear what you all think. Do our personalities truly have the ability to change substantially over our lifetimes? Or are we more or less "stuck" with the personalities we're born with? I'd love to hear your perspectives!篇4Do People's Personalities Change As They Get Older?Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. Today, I want to talk to you about something that's been on my mind lately - whether people's personalities stay the same forever or if they can change over time as they get older. It's a pretty deep topic, but I'll do my best to explain it in a way that makes sense! From what I've observed with the people around me, it seems like personalities can definitely change at least a little bit as we age. My grandpa, for example, used to be a really quiet and serious guy when he was younger. But now that he's older, he's become much more easygoing, loves to tell jokes, and even acts kind of silly sometimes! Whenever I visit him, he always hasthese big warm hugs for me. It's hard to imagine him being so stern when I see how cheerful he is nowadays. On the other hand, my aunt Hannah has been a bubbly, energetic person for as long as I can remember. Even when she was a teenager, my mom said she was always the life of the party and made friends really easily wherever she went. Now that she's an adult with her own kids, she's definitely had to mature in some ways and be more responsible. But her core personality of being an outgoing people-person hasn't changed at all.So based on the examples around me, I think some parts of our personalities tend to stay consistent throughout our lives, while other parts can evolve over time. Like, maybe you'll always be a generally happy or serious type of person deep down. But the specific ways you express your personality might adapt as you experience different life stages and face new challenges. For example, an extravert might always crave lots of social interaction no matter how old they get. But the way they socialize could change, whether it's playing outside with neighborhood kids as a child, joining tons of school clubs as a teen, or hosting dinner parties with friends as an adult. The core drive to be around others stays the same, but how they act on it adjusts with age.Or let's say someone has always been a creative, artistic type of personality. As a kid, they might have spent hours coloring, painting, or putting on plays with friends. Then as a teenager, they could channel that creative energy into things like photography, creative writing, or designing clothes. And later as a working adult, that innate artistic vision could lead them to have a career in an artistic field like being a graphic designer, dance instructor, or chef. The fundamental personality trait sticks around, but it gets expressed through different outlets and evolves over time. Those are just a couple of examples, but you get the picture! Our personalities aren't completely fixed in stone. We're all constantly growing, learning, and being shaped by our changing life experiences and environments as we get older. So even if your core personality remains more or less stable, the specific thoughts, behaviors and ways you interact with the world will likely get refined and expanded over the years.Of course, there are probably some people out there whose personalities do a total 180 degree turn at certain points in their lives. Like maybe someone was a shy introvert as a kid, but later blossomed into a super outgoing adult after joining a band in college or something. Or a person could have a dramatic changein their outlook and way of behaving after going through an extremely formative experience, whether it's becoming a parent, surviving a serious illness, discovering a new hobby they're passionate about, or dealing with personal struggles. Life can take unpredictable turns sometimes that profoundly impact us.But for most of us, I think our personality shifts tend to be more gradual and evolutionary rather than these huge sudden transformations overnight. We're all works in progress, constantly tweaking and fine-tuning ourselves based on the situations we encounter and lessons we learn along the way.I know this is all kind of deep thinking for a 10-year-old kid! But I've always been a curious and contemplative type who loves analyzing things from different angles. And that's a core part of my personality that I don't think will change too much, even as I keep growing up over the years. I'll probably just analyze things in more mature, profound ways as I get older. But that innate desire to ponder life's big questions will likely stick with me throughout my journey.Anyway, those are just my thoughts based on the people I know and my own experiences so far! Personality is such a fascinating and complex part of what makes us human. I'm really looking forward to seeing how my own personality evolves in thedecades to come, while still staying true to my core authentic self. I'd love to hear your perspective too - do you think our personalities are destined to change over time, or do you think we'll be essentially the same people at 80 years old as we were at 8? Let me know!篇5Does Our Personality Change As We Get Older?Hi, my name is Jimmy and I'm in 5th grade. My teacher, Mrs. Garcia, asked us to write an essay about whether people's personalities stay the same or change as they grow up. I've been thinking a lot about this topic because I'm getting older and sometimes I notice changes in how I act compared to when I was little.First off, what even is a personality? From what I understand, it's all the different traits and qualities that make each person unique - like how outgoing or shy you are, if you get angry easily or stay calm, if you're adventurous or prefer routine. Your personality is the collection of all your behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and overall way of being in the world. So the big question is - does that personality shift over the years or is it pretty much set in stone from birth? Based on myobservations and experiences so far, I believe that our core personalities tend to stay relatively stable, but we can certainly change in some specific ways as we age. Let me explain further...When I was a super little kid, like 3 or 4 years old, I was really shy around people I didn't know well. I clearly remember clinging to my mom's leg when we'd go places and refusing to talk if a stranger tried making conversation. As a infant and toddler, my personality seemed to fit the definition of "introverted."Fast forward to now at age 10, and I'm definitely more outgoing and talkative, especially with my group of friends. I'll raise my hand in class to answer questions and I'm not afraid to be the center of attention sometimes. So in that way, it seems like my core personality trait of being shy did evolve into being more extraverted over time. However, I can say with certainty that I was born with my basic temperament and some fundamental aspects of my personality. For example, I've always been a pretty mellow,laid-back kid who doesn't get flustered or lose my cool easily. Even as a baby, my parents said I almost never cried or fussed compared to other newborns. So that calm demeanor is just part of who I am at my core.I've also consistently been a total goofball from day one! Cracking jokes, being the class clown, doing silly voices or dances to make people laugh...that's been a constant part of my personality for as long as I can remember. My funny side and sense of humor don't seem to have changed one bit as I've grown up.Based on my personal experience so far, I'd say certain personality traits like introversion/extroversion can definitely transform quite a bit as we age. But there are also deep-rooted parts of our personality that feel pretty hardwired and stick with us throughout all the stages of life.Another factor that makes me think personalities can evolve is looking at how my interests, hobbies, and goals have already changed so much from when I was little. When I was really young, all I cared about was watching superhero movies and cartoons, and playing make-believe games where I was a powerful hero myself. Those things made me happy back then. Now that I'm older, I've started getting interested in playing sports like basketball and soccer. I've joined the school band and discovered I really like music. And rather than wanting to be a superhero, I'm thinking more about potential career paths - maybe being an engineer or video game designer could be cool.My mindset and focuses have matured compared to my earlier childhood. So if my interests, activities, maturity level, and life goals can change that drastically from age 5 to age 10, it makes sense that my personality traits and behaviors would shift at least a little too. Because the things I devote time to and care about most could impact how I act and see the world, right? From talking to adults, it sounds like personalities can continue changing even more throughout the teenage years, college, and becoming a grown-up. Things like having your first romantic relationship, picking a career path, having kids of your own one day, dealing with life's obstacles and hardships - all of those major life experiences will likely keep shaping who you are as a person over time.Even the type of work you do or lifestyle you choose could alter your personality. For example, my uncle was pretty shy and introverted when he was younger. But after joining the military for several years, he said all that intense training and discipline made him much more assertive, confident, and comfortable taking charge. His job completely transformed his personality in some ways.On the other hand, I know some elderly people who seem to have had the same basic temperaments, quirks, and ways of behaving Their personalities from childhood stayed really consistent over the course of their entire lives, despite all the major changes they went through. So clearly, it's different for everybody. In conclusion, based on my personal observations and thinking through this topic, I believe people's core personalities tend to stay more stable than not. We're all born with certain fundamental traits that feel core to who we are. Things like our basic temperament, levels of introversion/extroversion, sense of humor, talents, and other deep-rooted qualities. However, parts of our personalities can definitely morph and evolve over the years too, especially when it comes to our interests, goals, mindsets, and how we adapt to new life circumstances. Major experiences like jobs, relationships, tragedies or victories - those can absolutely shape us and alter some aspects of how we think and behave over time. But at the end of the day, I believe our true core selves and most fundamental personality traits remain more or less constant throughout our lifetimes. We just keep adding new layers and flavors to our personalities through everything weencounter and the choices we make along the journey of growing up.Well, thanks for reading my essay! I'd better go start my math homework before I get yelled at. Writing this made me appreciate how even though I've changed a bunch since being a little kid, I'm still ultimately the same silly, calm, happy-go-lucky Jimmy at heart. Can't wait to see how else I might change and grow in the years ahead!。

我和我的好朋友的不同之处英语作文

我和我的好朋友的不同之处英语作文

我和我的好朋友的不同之处英语作文全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1My Best Friend and I - Not Quite Two Peas in a PodEveryone has a best friend, right? That one person who is always there for you, who you can share anything with, and who you have tons of fun with. Well, my best friend is Sarah, andwe've known each other since we were just little kids in kindergarten. We clicked right away and have been inseparable ever since. At first glance, Sarah and I may seem really similar. We're both girls, around the same age and height, and in the same grade at school. We have a lot of the same interests too, like reading fantasy novels, riding our bikes, and playing games at recess. But if you look a little closer, you'll see we actually have quite a few differences between us!One of the biggest ways Sarah and I are different is our personalities. I'm pretty shy and quiet, especially around people I don't know very well. I tend to hang back and observe what's going on before jumping in. Sarah, on the other hand, is a totalextrovert! She has no problem walking right up to new people, introducing herself, and making new friends. Sometimes I'm a little jealous of how outgoing and confident she is.We also have very different skills and talents. I've always been really good at academic stuff like reading, writing, and math. I usually get pretty good grades and understand the lessons quickly. Sarah is smart too, but she definitely struggles more with schoolwork than I do. Where she really shines, though, is in sports and athletic activities. Sarah is super coordinated and loves playing sports like soccer, basketball, and gymnastics.I'm...well, let's just say I'm not quite as gifted in that department!I trip over my own feet more often than not.Our personalities and talents lead us to have different interests too. Like I mentioned, I'm a huge bookworm and love getting lost in the worlds of fantasy novels. Sarah isn't as crazy about reading – she'd much rather be outside running around and being active. I actually get tired just watching her endless energy sometimes! She's always nagging me to put my book down and come outside to play.Even our favorite foods are opposites. I absolutely love anything sweet – cakes, cookies, candy, you name it. Sugary treats are my biggest weakness! Sarah, on the other hand, is allabout salty, savory snacks like chips, pretzels, and crackers. She says sweet things make her feel kinda sick. We always laugh about how we can never share our snacks because we hate each other's favorite foods. Our different personalities and interests mean we have different strengths too. When we have to work together on a project for school, I'm much better at things like researching, taking notes, and putting together the written report. Sarah is way better at doing the actual hands-on part of projects or any kind of presentation. We make a pretty great team because our skills complement each other so well. It's funny how even our appearances are pretty different when you get down to the details. I have long, curly brown hair, while Sarah's hair is short, straight, and blonde. My eyes are green, and hers are blue. She has a couple freckles sprinkled across her nose, but I don't have any. Small things, sure, but still differences that make us unique individuals.I could probably go on all day about the big and little ways that Sarah and I are different. But at the end of the day, those differences are what make our friendship so special and interesting. We learn from each other, balance each other out, and always have fun experiencing life from two slightly differentperspectives. Like my mom always says, "Variety is the spice of life!"篇2My Best Friend and I - The Differences Between UsMy best friend's name is Sarah, and even though we are very close, we have a lot of differences between us. Sarah and I have been friends since kindergarten, and we've been through so much together over the years. We're like two peas in a pod, but at the same time, we're like night and day in some ways! One of the biggest differences between Sarah and me is our personalities. I'm more of an introvert and a bit shy, especially around people I don't know very well. Sarah, on the other hand, is an extrovert and a real social butterfly! She loves being the center of attention and making new friends wherever she goes. Sometimes I envy how outgoing and confident she is, but I also enjoy my quieter nature most of the time.Another big difference is our interests and hobbies. I absolutely love reading books, especially fantasy and adventure stories. I could spend hours upon hours getting lost in the pages of a good book, imagining myself as the hero or heroine on a grand quest. Sarah, however, would much rather be outsideplaying sports or engaging in physical activities. She's a natural athlete and excels at just about any sport she tries, from soccer to basketball to gymnastics. While I enjoy being active too, I much prefer the calm and adventure of a good book. Our academic strengths and weaknesses also differ quite a bit. In school, I tend to do really well in subjects like English, literature, and creative writing. Sarah, on the other hand, is an absolute whiz at math and science. She can solve complex equations and understand scientific concepts that completely boggle my mind. Whenever we have group projects or need to study together, we make a great team because our strengths complement each other so well.Even our appearances are quite different. Sarah has long, blonde hair that she often wears in a ponytail or braids, bright blue eyes, and a smattering of freckles across her nose. I, on the other hand, have short, dark brown hair, green eyes, andolive-toned skin. Sarah is also a few inches taller than me, which means she can often reach things on the higher shelves that I can't quite get to.Despite all of our differences, Sarah and I share a deep bond of friendship that transcends everything else. We may be like night and day in many ways, but we also balance each other outand bring out the best in one another. Sarah helps me come out of my shell and try new things, while I help her slow down and appreciate the quieter moments in life. We may not always see eye to eye, but we always have each other's backs no matter what. One of my favorite things about our friendship is how we can be completely honest and open with each other without fear of judgment. Sarah knows all of my deepest secrets and insecurities, and I know hers. We've been through thick and thin together, from navigating the ups and downs of elementary school to dealing with family issues and personal struggles. No matter what life throws our way, we face it together as a team.I'll never forget the time when Sarah's parents went through a difficult divorce a couple of years ago. Sarah was absolutely devastated, and I did everything I could to be there for her and support her through that challenging time. I let her cry on my shoulder, listened to her vent her frustrations and sadness, and tried my best to cheer her up with silly jokes and her favorite snacks. In turn, Sarah was there for me when my grandfather passed away last year, offering me comfort and a shoulder to lean on when I needed it most. One of the things I admire most about Sarah is her unwavering loyalty and devotion to our friendship. No matter how many new friends she makes or how popular she becomes, she never forgets about me or leaves me behind. She always makes time for our weekly sleepovers, movie nights, and adventures, even when her schedule gets crazy with all of her extracurricular activities. As we've grown older and entered the later years of elementary school, Sarah and I have started to appreciate and embrace our differences more than ever before. We've realized that our contrasting personalities, interests, and strengths are what make our friendship so special and unique. We balance each other out perfectly, and our differences are what make us an unstoppable duo.Looking towards the future, I know that Sarah and I will face many more challenges and changes as we navigate the ups and downs of middle school, high school, and beyond. Our lives will inevitably take different paths, and we may grow apart or drift in different directions at times. However, I truly believe that our friendship is strong enough to withstand any obstacle or change that comes our way.No matter where life takes us or how much we may change and grow as individuals, Sarah will always be my best friend, my partner in crime, and the yin to my yang. Our differences are what make our bond so unbreakable, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Sarah and I are a perfect example of how opposites can not only attract but also thrive and complement each other in the most beautiful and harmonious way.篇3The Differences Between My Best Friend and MeMy best friend's name is Emily, and we've known each other since we were babies. Our moms were best friends in high school, so we grew up together. Emily and I are really close, but we're also quite different in many ways. One of the biggest differences between us is our personalities. I'm a pretty shy and quiet person, especially around people I don't know very well. Emily, on the other hand, is super outgoing and loves being the center of attention. She's always cracking jokes and making everyone laugh. I admire how confident and funny she is, but sometimes I wish she would tone it down a little bit.Another major difference is our interests and hobbies. Emily is really into sports, especially soccer and basketball. She's on the school teams for both and practices almost every day after school. I, however, am not very athletic at all. I much prefer reading books, drawing, and playing video games in my free time. Emily thinks my hobbies are boring, but I find them relaxing and enjoyable. Our academic strengths and weaknesses also differ quite a bit. Emily struggles with subjects like math and science, but she excels in English and social studies. I'm the opposite – I'm really good at math and science, but I have a hard time with writing and analyzing literature. We often help each other out with our weaker subjects, which is nice.Physically, Emily and I look fairly different too. She's tall and thin with long, straight blonde hair and blue eyes. I'm shorter and a little chubby, with curly brown hair and brown eyes. Emily is always getting complimented on her appearance, while I sort of blend into the background. It used to bother me, but now I've learned to appreciate my own unique looks. Our tastes in food, music, TV shows, and fashion also vary a lot. Emily is much pickier than I am when it comes to food – she basically only eats chicken nuggets, pizza, and mac and cheese.I'll eat just about anything. She listens to pop and hip-hop, while I prefer rock and indie music. She loves cheesy teen dramas, but I'm more into cartoons and anime. And her style is very girly and trendy, whereas I just wear jeans and T-shirts most of the time.Despite all of our differences, though, Emily and I have been inseparable since birth. We share the same goofy sense of humor and core values like honesty and loyalty. We've been through so much together already, like starting kindergarten, dealing with mean bullies, and having our hearts broken for the first time (by the same boy!). We know everything about each other, flaws and all, and accept one another unconditionally. Our differences actually make our friendship stronger in a lot of ways. We push each other out of our comfort zones and expose each other to new things. We offer different perspectives on things, which helps us see the full picture. And we balance each other out – I help keep Emily grounded, while she encourages me to be more spontaneous and daring. We may be complete opposites, but our lives wouldn't be nearly as fun and interesting without each other in them.So while Emily and I have many differences when it comes to our personalities, interests, academic abilities, appearances, and tastes, those differences are what make our friendship so specialand unbreakable. We embrace our distinctions instead of letting them drive us apart. After all, what's the fun in being exactly alike? Our differences make us unique individuals, and I wouldn't have it any other way with my bestie.篇4My Best Friend and I: A Study in ContrastsHi there! My name is Jamie, and I'm ten years old. I'm here to tell you all about my very best friend in the whole wide world - Sarah! Sarah and I have been buddies since we were just tiny kids in pre-school. We've been through so much together over the years. While we're really close, though, we're actually quite different in a lot of ways. Let me explain!First off, you should know that Sarah is crazy about sports and anything active, while I'm more of an indoorsy, quiet type. Sarah is on the school soccer team, the basketball team, and she even does track and field in the spring. Me? Well, I'd much rather be inside reading a book or playing video games. Don't get me wrong - I like being active sometimes. But Sarah is a total athlete and I'm...well, not so much.Another way we're different is in how we look. Sarah has beautiful long blonde hair that she often wears in braids or aponytail. My hair is short and brown. She has blue eyes and I have green eyes. She's also quite a bit taller than me - I'm kind of short for my age. But even with our different looks, we're both pretty cute if you ask me!Speaking of looks, Sarah is a lot better at art and creative things than I am. She's an amazing artist and is always doodling or painting pictures. I'm just not very artistic at all. If I try to draw something, it looks like a blob! Sarah is really good at that kind of creative expression. Me? I express myself better through writing stories and poetry. That's more my thing. We have some differences in our personalities too. Sarah is one of the most outgoing, energetic people you'll ever meet. She's a total social butterfly and loves being the center of attention. I'm much shyer and quieter. I prefer small groups to big crowds. While Sarah thrives on being the life of the party, I'd rather hang back and observe. She's the unstoppable force and I'm the immovable object! Our different personalities lead us to have different strengths too. Because she's so outgoing and personable, Sarah is a terrific leader and organizer. She's the president of our class council and is always spearheading fun activities for everyone. I'm more of a behind-the-scenes support person. I'm great atresearching topics, editing others' work, and providing feedback. We actually make an awesome team when we collaborate on projects. There are some things we do have in common though. We're both really hard workers when it comes to our schoolwork and activities. We take our responsibilities seriously and always give 100% effort. We're both total foodies too! Sarah and I love trying new snacks and dishes from all different cuisines. Our favorite is probably Mexican food - those cheesy nachos are to die for!We also both have the same dorky sense of humor. We're always cracking silly jokes and puns with each other. I really value having a friend who can laugh about weird, random things with me. Life is too short not to have fun and be a little goofy sometimes!Despite our differences, Sarah is my number one bestie because we share the most important things - loyalty, trust, and caring about each other. Sure, she may be an athletic art prodigy and I'm a bookish writer. But at the end of the day, we have each other's backs no matter what. We look out for each other, support each other's interests, and most importantly, we keep each other's secrets (like how I still sleep with my stuffedelephant Mr. Snuffleupagus...shhh!). A true friend loves you for who you are, quirks and all.So while Sarah and I may seem like an odd couple at first glance, our differences are what make our friendship so special and unique. We balance each other out perfectly. I help reign in her wild impulses, and she encourages me to take more chances and be brave. We teach each other new skills and see the world through fresh perspectives. Simply put, we make each other better people. That's the real power of friendship!Well, thanks for reading all about me and my BFF Sarah! We may be like night and day in some ways, but our bond is strong. I feel so lucky to have a friend who lets me be 100% myself while showing me how to grow too. Here's to many moreyears of adventures, laughs, and making amazing memories篇5My Best Friend and I - So Different, Yet So CloseI've known Tommy since we were just little kids in kindergarten. We've been best friends for as long as I can remember. Even though we're really close, Tommy and I are actually pretty different in a lot of ways. One of the biggest differences is how we look. Tommy has these bright blue eyes and reddish-brown hair that's always a bit messy no matter what. My eyes are brown and my hair is black and straight. Tommy is also taller than me and pretty skinny while I'm a little shorter and have a rounder belly. Our moms are always telling us how opposite we look!We have different personalities too. I tend to be pretty quiet and shy, especially around people I don't know well. Tommy, on the other hand, is a total extrovert. He'll talk to anyone and everyone, whether it's the new kid at school or a stranger on the street. Sometimes I get a little embarrassed by how outgoing and loud he can be. But I also admire how friendly and confident he is with people.Tommy is definitely the daredevil between the two of us. He's always trying crazy stunts on his skateboard or bike and doesn't seem to get scared very easily. I'm much more of a cautious person. I have to really think things through before doing anything risky or dangerous. A lot of times I'll chicken out while Tommy just goes for it without even blinking. In school, our strengths are pretty different too. Tommy is awesome at math and science and anything involving numbers or logical thinking. I'm really bad at that stuff though andconstantly need his help with my math homework. My strong subjects are reading, writing, and other language arts. I love getting lost in a good book or writing creative stories. Tommy thinks that kind of thing is boring and would much rather be outside being active. Our tastes in food, TV shows, video games, and pretty much everything else are super different too. Tommy is a huge fan of anything with action, adventure, or lot of explosions. He's obsessed with first-person shooter games, superhero movies, and shows about the military or police. I prefer things that are more imaginative and thought-provoking like fantasy worlds, creative animated films, and games that involve strategy or storytelling. It's actually pretty funny that even with all these differences, we manage to get along so well and be such good friends. I guess it's because despite seeming like total opposites on the surface, we have a few key things in common underneath it all. We both value being a good friend and treating others with kindness and respect. We're both pretty easygoing and don't let small disagreements get in the way. And most importantly, we know we can be totally honest and real with each other.Sometimes I'm amazed we clicked so well, what with all our contrasts. But that's the thing about true friendship - it goes beyond just the superficial things you have in common. Tommy and I may be different in a million little ways, from our appearances to our personalities to our interests. But those are just details. At our core, we just getnach other. That unspoken bond and mutual understanding is what allows our friendship to thrive in spite of those differences...maybe even because of them.Tommy helps me get out of my shell, try new exciting things, and worry less. I help Tommy slow down, think before he acts, and appreciate the joys of using your imagination. Together we balance each other out in the best way possible. Having such a different best friend has really helped me grow and become a more well-rounded person. I can't imagine my life without Tommy in it, differences and all!篇6My Best Friend and I - How We're DifferentMy best friend Sarah and I are really close. We've known each other since kindergarten and do almost everything together. We're in the same class, play on the same soccer team, and even take art lessons together after school. Our families are friends too and we have sleepovers at each other's houses almost every weekend.Even though Sarah and I are best buddies, we're actually pretty different in a lot of ways. People are always telling us how opposite we are! I think that's why we get along so well though. We balance each other out. Here are some of the biggest ways we're different:LooksSarah and I definitely don't look alike. Sarah has long blonde hair and blue eyes. I have short black hair and brown eyes. She's also taller than me - I'm one of the shortest kids in our class! Sarah's skin is very fair and she has freckles across her nose. My skin is more tan. Our parents joke that we don't even look like we're from the same planet!PersonalitiesOur personalities are super different too. Sarah is really shy and quiet, especially around people she doesn't know well. I'm more outgoing and make friends easily. In fact, that's how Sarah and I became best friends - I introduced myself on the first day of kindergarten and we hit it off right away!Sarah is also really well-behaved and follows all the rules. I have a harder time sitting still and paying attention, and sometimes get in little troubles at school. Not bad troubles though! Just stuff like talking out of turn or squirming around too much.Sarah is very patient and easygoing. I'm the opposite and have a shorter temper. I get frustrated more easily, like when I can't beat a level on a video game. Sarah is able to stay calm in situations that make me mad or upset.Interests and HobbiesWe do have some interests in common, like soccer, art class, and reading fiction books. But we also have a bunch of different hobbies too.Sarah is really into science and nature. She's a member of the science club at school and loves learning about animals, plants, and the environment. She has a whole bird-watching kit with binoculars and guidebooks. I think that's kind of boring to be honest!I prefer activities like basketball, swimming, and video games over nature stuff. Sports and gaming are way more exciting inmy opinion. I'm not really into clubs at school either - I'd rather just hang out with friends. We do both love art class though. Sarah is really talented and great at realistic drawings, like sketching animals or objects. I'm not as good at realism but love abstract, colorful art with bright paints and oil pastels.School SubjectsYou'd probably expect that Sarah does better than me academically since she's so well-behaved and patient. But actually, we each excel at different subjects.Sarah gets perfect scores in science and nature studies, no surprise there. But she also does really well in math, which isn't my strongest area at all. Numbers just don't make sense to my brain!I'm a stronger reader and writer than Sarah is. Reading fiction is my favorite subject and I get good grades inEnglish/language arts classes. Creative writing is easy and fun for me. Sarah has a harder time with language skills. We're both around average when it comes to history and social studies. It really depends on the topic for whether we find it interesting or boring! So that's a look at some of the key ways my best friend Sarah and I are different. We may be opposites in many ways, from our looks to our personalities to our interests. But that's what makes our friendship work so well. We balance each other out and learn from each other's strengths. I'm able to help Sarah be more outgoing and confident, while she helps me be more patient and studious. Different can be good when you're best friends!。

Diogenes and Alexander 戴奥吉尼斯和亚历山大The Dog Has His DayGilbert HighetThis article by the late classicist Gilbert Highet describes a meeting between two sharply contrasting personalities of history: Alexander the Great and Diogenes. This selection originally appeared in Horizon, the first in a series entitled Great Confrontations.

Lying on the bare earth, shoeless, bearded, half-naked, he looked like a beggar or a lunatic(神经病,疯子). He was one, but not the other. He had opened his eyes with the sun at dawn (拂晓), scratched, done his business like a dog at the roadside, washed at the public fountain, begged a piece of breakfast bread and a few olives, eaten them squatting on the ground, and washed them down with a few handfuls of water scooped from the spring. (Long ago he had owned a rough wooden cup, but he threw it away when he saw a boy drinking out of his hollowed hands.) Having no work to go to and no family to provide for, he was free. 他躺在光溜溜的地上,赤着脚,胡子拉茬的,半裸着身子,模样活像个乞丐或疯子。

Everyone has got two personalities-the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you're awake because you can control your behavior, but when you're asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.

If you go to sleep on your back, you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don't like to upset people, so you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you aren't very confident.
如果你是仰卧着入睡的,说明你是个心胸开阔的人。

你一般信任他人,容易受时尚和新思想的影响。

你不喜欢得罪人,所以你从不表露自己的真实感情。

你很害羞,不够自信。

If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you're always easily upset. You're very stubborn, but you aren't very ambitious. You usually live for today not tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
如果你俯卧睡觉,说明你比较含蓄。

你常忧心忡忡,且容易烦恼。

你很固执,却没有多大抱负。

你一般是今朝有酒今朝醉。

也就是说,你喜欢玩得快乐。

If you sleep curled up you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you're often defensive. You're shy and you don't normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You're easily hurt.
如果你睡觉时蜷缩着身体,那你可能是一个神经紧张的人。

你自我感觉不好,所以常常谨小慎微。

你还比较害羞,一般不喜欢与人打交道。

你更喜欢一人独处。

你容易受伤害。

If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You're usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don't often get depressed. You always say what you think even if it annoys people.
如果你是侧卧着睡觉的,说明你的性格比较稳健。

你了解自己的优点和缺点。

你处事比较谨慎。

你很自信。

你有时会感到焦急不安,但不会轻易愁苦。

你总是直言快语,不怕得罪人。
