In the words of a poet and philosopher, "As manylanguages as one speaks, so many lives one lives." A culture and its language are as necessary as brain and body; while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best beginning would be starting with the non-language elements of the language: its gestures, its body language, etc. Eye contact is extremely important in English. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work untilretirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they got married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to get married young, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more return afterwards to a full-time or part-time job. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.21. We are told that in an average family about 1890________.A. many children died before they were fiveB. the youngest child would be fifteen years younger than the oldestC. seven of eight children lived to be more than fiveD. the child death rate was rather high22. Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.A. get married so that they can get a jobB. leave school as soon as they canC. give up their jobs for good after they are marriedD. continue working until they are going to have a baby24. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. get married while still at school25. The best title for this passage is ______________.A. Great Changes in Women’s LifeB. 19th-Century FamilyC. Modern Girls’ ChoiceD. Equal Duties in Family Life(3)Some radio signals were heard in 1967. They were coming from a point in the sky where there was no know star. They were coming very regularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled by a clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. The signals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” theythought, “who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So the news was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet; they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the first one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too small for us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. The radio signals discussed in this passage .A.were regularB.were controlled by a clockC.were heard in 1967 onlyD.were secret messages27. Both towns have many hotels; and in the summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day, the following news appeared on page two of the town’s newspaper, The Beldon Post:FIRE AT SEABREEZELate last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom The hotel manager said that a cigarette sta rted the fire. We say again to all our visitor: “Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed.” This was Beldon’s first hotel fire in five years. The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one:ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRELast night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said, “An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I turned my bedside light on, I h eard a funny noise from the lamp.” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield. What are the facts, then? During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s ec onomic position. When she was over fifty, the late 19th century mother________.A. would expect to work until she diedB. was usually expected to take up paid employmentC. would be healthy enough to take up paid employmentD. was unlikely to find a job even if she is now likely23. They were coming veryregularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled bya clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. Thesignals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it? Or werethe signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star? There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” they thought,“who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So thenews was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studiedthe s ignals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And theyhave told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet;they com e from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundredother pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like thefirst one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh afew thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too smallfor us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. The radio signals discussed in this passage .A.were regularB.w ere controlled by a clockC.were heard in 1967 onlyD.were secret messages27. The radio signals were sent by .A. a satelliteB. a planetC. a sky body which was unknown at that timeD. intelligent beings who were unknown at that time28. A pulsar is .A.a small heavy star which sends out strong radio signals and cannotbe seenB.a small heavy planet which sends out strong radio signals and cannotbe seenC.a small heavy satellite which sends out strong radio signals andcannot be seenD.a small intelligent being who sends out strong radio signals andcannot be seen30. In the United States, it is an annual (每年的) occasion to show thanks to God for his goodness. As a historical, national and religious holiday, Thanksgiving Day began with the English in Plymouth Colony. As far back as 1621, after a long bitter winter and the gathering of the first harvest, these early settlers shared a feast with the local Indians and offered prayers of thanksgiving. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. President Lincoln revived the custom in 1863.It was not until 1941 that the US Congress adopted a resolution, setting the fourth Thursday of November as an annual Thanksgiving Day. Thus what began as a religious celebration of the harvest has since become a nationwide holiday.Today Thanksgiving Day is usually a family day, celebrated with a traditional turkey dinner and a happy reunion. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot. Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally.. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille ( a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, ,Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people. While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.11. There are so many different types of people in the world but if you go to a college campus, you are sure to find at least one of every kind. The great part about being here with so many different people is that you get to interact with some interesting characters and see how to deal with them. You will meet the people you dread the most, the smart –ass, the brain, or the unique spirit, but no matter who it is that is your worst nightmare to be around you will always be paired up with them in a group project. When you get into the real world you are not going to be able to pick your boss or coworkers. Interacting with these people in college and living with different roommates will help you learn how to cooperate with the people in life you find so unpleasant. College life is fun. The fact that I have been here for a short time just means it has not yet been a life changing experience to me. If I were to give any tips on how to survive, it would not be how to survive college, but how to survive life. I would have to say that one should be outgoing and live life to the fullest. Meet new people whenever you can because they just may be a major influence in your life. Also, get your work done before you go out and party. The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one of the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a book which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friends. In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin w as a young man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying the plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin’s father told him not to go, an d the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin’s nose; but that did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many samples and writing down his obs ervations about the living things he found. When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to explain what he had observed. It was clear that many species w ere connected with each other in some way, without being exactly the same. Why was this? Two years after his return, he deve loped a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fi t the environment. Different environments produce different species.(17.5分)

Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways —education, medicine, and business. Quietly the graying of America. has made us a very different society — one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public notions are changing. Many people say, "I am much younger than my mother — or my father — was at my age." No one says "act your age" anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.(17.5分)16). It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America ____.(3.5分)(A) has made people feel younger(B) has changed people’s social position(C) has changed people’s understanding of age(D) has slowed down the country’s social development17). The underlined word “one” refers to ______.(3.5分)(A) a society(B) America(C) a place(D) population参考答案:A18). We can infer from the text that if a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer would most probably consider it _________.(3.5分)(A) normal(B) wonderful(C) unbelievable(D) unreasonable参考答案:A19). “Act your age” means people should ________.(3.5分)(A) be active when they are old(B) do the right thing at the right age(C) show respect for their parents young or old(D) take more physical exercise suitable to their age参考答案:B20). This passage is mainly about ____________________.(3.5分)(A) why American society is different(B) suitable behaviors at different age in American’s eyes(C) how older people act in youthful ways in America(D) how American people’s ideas about age have changed参考答案:DJust as the degree of individual freedom in America seems loose and therefore uncomfortable to many visitors, in many countries, people will tell you what they think you want to hear, whether or not it is true. To them, this is the polite thing to do. To Americans it is considered confusing — even dishonest — to avoid telling the truth, even if the only purpose is to be polite. It is helpful to remember that different cultures consider some matters more important than others. For Americans, however, trust and truth are mostimportant. One of the worst things that can be said about someone in America is that “you cannot trust him.”Considering such differences in values among many cultures of the world, it is natural that misunderstandings occur. “How far is it to the next town?” an American asks a man standing by the road. In some countries , because the man realizes the traveler is tired and eager to reach the next village, he will politely say, “Just down the road”. He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the answer the traveler wants to hear. So the American drives alone for many more hours before he comes to the village. The traveler is angry, with a feeling of being fooled. He thinks that the man haslied to him on purpose because he must have known quite well what the distance was.If a visitor to the United States asked an American standing by the road how far the next town was, the American wouldthink it dishonest if he said it was near when he knew it was really 24 miles away. Although he, too, would be sympathetic with the tired traveler, he would say, “You have a long way to go yet; it is at least 24 miles more.” The traveler might be disappointed , but he would know what to expect, and there would be no misunderstanding.(17.5分)21). People in other cultures choose not to tell the truth to the visitors because _______________.(3.5分)(A) they try to confuse the visitors(B) they consider it comfortable(C) they try to be polite(D) they consider it helpful参考答案:C22). Americans insist on telling the truth because__________________.(3.5分)(A) they don’t mind confusing people(B) they are not considerate(C) they are not polite(D) they value trust and truth参考答案:D23). In paragraph 2, the misunderstanding occurs because____________________.(3.5分)(A) the man standing by the road doesn’t know where the American is going(B) the man standing by the road is dishonest and lied to the American(C) the man standing by the road wants to encourage the American(D) the man standing by the road knows the shortest way to the village参考答案:C24). We can infer from paragraph 3 that ____________________.(3.5分)(A) the American has no idea about how tired the traveler is(B) the American considers honesty important(C) the American wants to disappoint the traveler(D) the American knows what the traveler wants to hear参考答案:B25). What is the writer’s attitude toward the different cultures? (3.5分)(A) The writer thinks it natural for people in different cultures to misunderstand each other.(B) The writer thinks American culture better than many cultures of the world.(C) The writer thinks American culture worse than many cultures of the world.(D) The writer thinks people will always get confused with the cultural differences.参考答案:AA new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression(忧郁症)as young adults. But the extent to which TV may or may not be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to investigate the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995.As part of the survey, the young people were asked how manyhours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of 5.5 hours a day. More than 2 hours of that was spent watching TV.Seven years later, in 2002, more than 7 percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was 21. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an 8 percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop depression, given the same amount of media use.Doctor Primack says the study did not explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and socializing. It might also interfere with sleep, he says, and that could have an influence.(17.5分)26). According to the passage, the researchers have found________________________.(3.5分)(A) in what way watching TV causes depression(B) why teenagers like to watch TV(C) the relationship between depression and the use of all forms of media(D) the relationship between depression and watching TV参考答案:D27). As used in paragraph 2, the word “adolescent” means________________.(3.5分)(A) teenager(B) media use(C) young adult(D) average age参考答案:A28). About the methodology of the research, the writer has mentioned all of the following except that _______________. (3.5分)(A) the research was made nationwide(B) the research was made between 1995 and 2002(C) the adolescents in the survey were all depressed(D) the adolescents were asked how they used various types of media参考答案:C29). Which of the following is true about the findings of the research?(3.5分)(A) all the young people in the survey had signs of depression(B) watching TV longer implies higher risk of developing depression(C) not only TV, movies too, can result in depression(D) men and women had equal chances of developing depression 参考答案:B30). The tone of this passage can be described as__________________.(3.5分)(A) critical(B) argumentative(C) emotional(D) factual参考答案:DWhen having a meal, a European usually holds the knife in the right hand, and the fork in the left. He uses the knife and fork with his both hands. He keeps his knife and fork in his hands until he finishes eating. But an American, on the opposite, may use just one hand whenever possible and keep the other hand on his lap. He uses the fork in his right hand to pickup fried potatoes. When he has to cut his meat, he changes his fork to the left hand and cuts it. Then he puts down the knife and changes his fork to his right hand to pick up the sliced meat. Then, perhaps, he will suddenly think of his coffee or orange. So he has to put down his fork in order to drink his coffee or orange. Now you can see, an American is busy all the time at the dinner table. By the way, Europeans usually have their coffee after meals, but many Americans prefer to have coffee during the meal.If you are present at a formal dinner, you might be confused to find so many forks, knives and spoons put before you. You might be at a loss to know what to do with them. Don’t worry. The rule is simple. You just use them in the order in which they lie, beginning from outside towards the plate. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salad. The spoon on the outside on the right is for soup. There is another little knife, called a butter spreader, on a bread-and-butter plate on the left. As the bread is passed, each guest helps himself and puts his pieces on the small plate. Next to the soup there will probably be the blunt knife for fish, which is smaller and blunter than other knives.(17.5分)31). When do Europeans usually drink their coffee?(3.5分)(A) Before meals.(B) After meals.(C) While they are having their meals.(D) They never drink coffee when they eat.参考答案:B32). The right way to use the forks, knives and spoons is to use __________________.(3.5分)(A) whichever you like when necessary(B) them from the outside to the inside(C) them from the inside to the outside(D) them from the middle to both sides参考答案:B33). The spoon on the outside on the right is for_______________.(3.5分)(A) soup(B) salad(C) butter(D) chicken参考答案:A35). This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters (花名册) will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner D avid Stern happily embraces the trend. The strategy in China is TV. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success Chinese centre Yao Ming has pave d the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, wil l put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing market to compensate for tough times on home soil.“It doesn’t matter where the players come from, all the NBA teams now know that they have to scout (寻找) internationally,” s aid Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Fr enchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last s eason, many people can earn the respect of their America peers. Others, such as Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming—No.1 draft pick in 2002—and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic—number two overall in this year’s draft—are ic ons (偶像) in waiting. But there are also arguments against such a strong conclusion. F irstly, anthropologists point out that the insulated love affair between children and parents;found in modem societies does no t usually exist in traditional societies. For example,in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mother of a ch ild did not rear their infant alone—far from it'.Secondly, common sense tells US that day care would not be so widespread to day if parents care-takers found children had problems with it.Statistical studies of this kind have not yet been carried out,a nd even if they were, the results would be certain to be complicated and controversial.Thirdly.in the last decade there have been a number of careful American studies of children in day care, and they have uniformly reported that day care had a neur al or slightly positive effect on children’s development. But tests that have had to be used to measure this development are no t widely enough accepted to settle the issue. But Bowlby’s analysis raises the possibility that early day care has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead t o,say, more mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics.Whatever the long—te rm effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with。
