An unknown goddess

Some time ago, and interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea. An American team explored a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini. The city at one time must have been prosperous, for it enjoyed a high level of civilization. Houses-often three storeys high-were built of stone. They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls. The city was equipped with a drainage system, for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets.

The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century B.C. until Roman times. In the most sacred room of temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found.

Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted. The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the fifteenth century B.C. It's missing head happened to be among remains of the fifth century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious even then. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful

indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.

9. Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted.

And连接两个并列的谓语represented和had been painted;had been painted是过去完成时的被动语态,表示上色这个动作发生在“过去的过去”。

10. The body of one statue was found among remains dating

from the fifteenth century B.C.

语言点1:句子结构分析:本句中的现在分词短语dating from the fifteenth century B.C.

2:date from(=date back to,trace by)的意思是“起始于”。

The castle, the very best in Europe, has a long history dating back to the ancient Roman times.

11. It's missing head happened to be among remains of the

fifth century B.C.

语言点2:happen to do sth的意思是“碰巧做某事”。

12. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved.

语言点1:句子结构分析:must have been found是对过去的推测。

This head must have been found in Classical times and was carefully preserved.

13. It was very old and precious even then.

语言点1:it为代词,指代the statue。

语言点2:even then指“即使在当时”,相当于even at that time,但前者比后者更增强调时间的特殊性。

14. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments,

they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman.

2:be amazed to do sth,的意思是“某人惊奇的做某事”。
