初中英语阅读理解训练及参考答案(通用9篇)

初中英语阅读理解训练及参考答案(通用9篇)中考英语阅读理解及解析篇一Advertisers Perform a Useful Service to the CommunityAdvertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they’re always coming in for criticism. Their critics seem to resent them because they have a flair for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around. ‘It’s iniquitous,’ they say, ‘that this entirely unproductive industry (if we can call it that) should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit the big companies are making. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it’s the consumer who pays…’The poor old consumer! He’d have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn’t create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!Another thing we mustn’t forget is the ‘small ads.’ which are in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the ‘hatch, match and dispatch’ column but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or ‘agony’ column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It’s the best advertisement for advertising there is!1. What is main idea of this passage?A. Advertisement.B. The benefits of advertisement.C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.D. The costs of advertisement.2. The attitude of the author toward advertisers isA. appreciative.B. trustworthy.C. critical.D. dissatisfactory.3. Why do the critics criticize advertisers?A. Because advertisers often brag.B. Because critics think advertisement is a “waste of money”。

As a team leader, she wishes Frank, a member of her politics project, did his part as required. But rather than criticize (批评)him, only to find that Frank kept falling behind. It ended up that other team members, who had to take on more work, while Frank himself complained that he was not treated fairly. How did poor Candy get into this mess? The primary reason was that Candy failed in a key part of leadership—the duty to provide clear feedback(反馈)for team members. This isn’t simply a duty but a correctness.Failing to question or criticize Frank’s work, Candy was in fact unkind. Many people are not a failure, like Frank. They’re just in the wrong place, and still left in the dark. What they really need is feedback from their leaders. However, Candy didn’t bring out a gift in Frank.A leader had better use open, honest, continuous and clear feedback to help solve someone’s best fit in their job or in the organization. This method also avoids surprises. It’s not uncommon to see someone suddenly removed from a team. Maybe it serves them right, they wouldn’t have been caught off-guard (猝不及防)because they would have been receiving open, continuous and clear judgment of their performance. Then why is it so hard for leaders to give good feedback? People always like to be liked, so they avoid anything that may cause unpleasantness. But that kind of feedback usually helps members find the right place for them. If you just only like to be liked, the chance of being respected is really low. However, you have a chance of being liked. Of course, the most difficult part for a nice leader is criticizing someone.Back to Candy’s case. Not telling Frank how he was on the team only made a hard situation worse. But with a different mindset, she could have led her team to success and have been a likeable and critical leader.1.The word “gift” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ________”.A.present B.ability C.pride D.praise2.According to this article, what is necessary between leaders and team members?A.Being nice to team members is likely to win leaders great respect.B.Criticizing team members results in serious complaints to the leader.C.Open and honest communication is a must for leaders and team members.D.Praise and encouragement from leaders bring out better team performance.3.Based on the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A.Candy should patiently encourage Frank to try his best.B.Candy should gradually kick Frank off her team.C.Candy should politely show Frank the improvement he made.D.Candy should clearly tell Frank her judgment of his performance.4.What is the best title of the passage?A.Become a Good Leader B.Set a Good TeamC.Frank’s problem D.Cindy’s Worry(2023·重庆大渡口·统考二模)①Walking around the city, you will see girls wearing hanfu on the underground or people wearing T-shirt with Chinese characters in the streets. This is one of my Chinese teacher’s favorite Chinese idioms (习语), Deyuwangquan. It comes from Zhuangzi and the meaning of it is that you are used to getting help from others but don’t show your thanks to them. When I studied this idiom in the United States, I read traditional Chinese characters (汉字). The character for“fish” has four dots (点) at the bottom. However, when today’s Chinese students study this idiom, they read simplified (简化的) characters. The character for “fish” only has a line at the bottom. This simplified character is easier to write. However, why are the four dots replaced by a line, rather than something else? And how many of you have thought about this? This simplification of Chinese characters started in the 1950s. The purpose was to improve literacy (文学). Simplified characters are easier for people to read and write. However, they fear that over-simplifying Chinese characters may cause some cultural heritage (遗产) to be lost. The first four dots at the bottom of the character for “fish” come from even older characters. These characters not only mean fish but also look like a fish. There are hundreds of such characters in Chinese. Each of them has a story behind its meaning. Some people have suggested that schools should teach traditional characters. But Chinese is already among the most difficult languages to read and write. To save time, perhaps we should still learn and use simplified characters. However, traditional Chinese characters are valuable and should stay, too. You may take some time to learn about them and the stories behind. In this way, you will help pass down Chinese culture and also have some fun. 25.We can use the idiom “Deyuwangquan” to describe ________.A.Linda, who is warm-hearted and always ready to help othersB.Cindy, who always forgets things and makes everything a messC.John, who is interested in fishing but not very good at itD.Bob, who is successful but not thankful to those who helped him26.________ is the traditional character for “fish” which the writer first read in the US.A.B.C.D.27.From the passage, we can learn ________.A.Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to read and writeB.the simplification of Chinese characters started in the 1960sC.it takes more time to write simplified Chinese charactersD.it’s meaningless to pass down traditional Chinese characters28.The passage mainly tells us something about ________.A.Chinese history B.Chinese idioms C.Chinese characters D.Chinese teachers(2023·重庆江北·校考三模)There were many fantastic boats in South Lake. 信息还原题:1. 对段落进行归纳2. 注意上下文的衔接过渡(1)If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a British team, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter more. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the younger the people are when they start learning a second language, the greater the effect is.The team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. “Our studies suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. His findings were also matched in some other studies. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”Another similar conclusion is drawn in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.60. In other words, children are allowedto do what they like in this period. The schools and the educators made it easy for us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy(随意政策). We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators(计算器), turned on the television too often, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation. Now, children have been developing at their own pace(步伐) for the past 15 years. ________55_______. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who thinks her students “so passive(被动)” and wonders what has happened. Television, says Klompus, leads to children’s passivity. “We’re talking about a generation(一代) of kids who've never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying ‘go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It's time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it's for their own good. It's time to start telling them no again.55. Which following can be put in the blank in Para.3?A. They have had bad habits.B. Parents are worried.C. Something must be done.D. An US astronaut and NASA employee Neil Armstrong stepped onto the surface of the moon and he said, “One small step for a man, one great leap for mankind”. Since then, NASA has been responsible for many great leaps of its own—more than most of us realize. This year is the 60th anniversary(周年)of NASA’s founding in 1958. To most of us, NASA is simply a name that’s connected with rockets and trips to space. However, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is to thank for many everyday things that we don’t give much thought to.Take mobile phones for example. Most of us don’t know that NASA invented the technology behind the cameras found in modern phones. Thanks to research by NASA scientists who were looking for ways to create small cameras to fit onto spaceship, we’re able to take selfies(自拍)today. The NASA’s creativity has led to the creation of many other great inventions, including the computer mouse, laptop computer and even sports shoes. Indeed, NASA stands by its motto, “For the Benefit of All”.But while these things have brought convenience and improvements to our planet, let’s not forget NASA’s main purpose: 55 . From the Space Shuttle Program, which sent over 300 astronauts into space between 1972 and 2011, to the James Webb Space Telescope, a new telescope that will allow us to see deeper into the universe, NASA is making greater and greater steps into understanding space as each day goes by.“NASA’s achievements writes an important and wonderful chapter in human history, which is nearly impossible to overstate,” As NASA’s anniversary is around the corner, it’s exciting to imagine what the next 60 years will bring. Will our generation watch the first human on Mars, as our parents’ generation saw the first human on the moon? We can only wait and see.55. Which following can be put in the blank in Paragraph 5?A. to make our planet more convenient.B. to send more astronauts into space.C. to discover more about our planet.D. to explore what’s outside of Earth56. Which of the following shows the best structure of the passage?(①=Para.1 ②=Para 2 ③=Para 3 ④=Para 4 ⑤=Para 5 ⑥=Para 6 )A.①/ ②③④⑤/ ⑥B. ①②/ ③④⑤/ ⑥C. ①②③/ ④⑤/ ⑥D. ①/ ②③④/ ⑤⑥(3)Just like any relationship, best friendships depend on trust, promise, respect and interests. When any of these elements(要素) is missing, the friendship will be hard to go on. If the trust is totally broken, you may not be able to forgive him/her.Sometimes a friendship ends because either you or your friend gets tired of putting the heart into it. This can happen when one of you finds a new friend or even a new hobby that takes up much time. Or, perhaps you find the relationship is always going in an unhealthy way and you want some distance(距离). Other times, you simply change and want to leave each other. Sure, it seems sad at the time, but it's completely normal. Not all friendships are meant to last forever. So, what should you do if something like this happens to you? Read on for some friendly advice.Whatever the reason you're breaking up with your best friend is, always remember that he/she was once super important to you. Take the time to sit down and tell him/her what's going on and why. Don't send him/her an unpleasant e-mail. Don’t start ignoring him/her though you’re busy with your new hobby. In fact, maybe he/she has known there's a problem and would be willing to have a heart-to-heart chat. If you're not sure about wanting an end forever, you could suggest you two take a break from each other. If, after a while, you realize why you became the best friends in the beginning, you can try getting back to your former behaviors.Whatever you do, be honest about your feelings while having respect for his/hers. And if you both agree the Best Forever Friend thing is over, make sure not to be enemies.60. If we put the passage into several parts, which of the following is the best?( ①= Para.(自然段)1 ②= Para.2 ③= Para.3 ④= Para.4 ⑤= Para.5 )A. ①②; ③④⑤B. ①②;③④;⑤C. ①;②③④;⑤D. ①②③; ④⑤(4)The Chinese sci-fi movie The Wondering Earth makes people excited. How about scary movies? Whenever we watch a scary movie and something scary happens, we might close our eyes and scream. However, chances are that we’ll continue to watch and enjoy the movie anyway. So why can fear be so much fun?A recent study made by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh in the US shows that watching scary movies can raise our mood, help make people together and make us confident. In the study, 262 adults were asked to enter a haunted house attraction. Inside, they had to stay there for 35 minutes, and were asked to record(记录) their feelings both before and after the experience. At the same time, the researchers also watched their brain waves.According to the researchers, people who took part in the research were more likely to be happier and less worried and tired after they left the attraction. That’s because in this intense(紧张的)condition, their brains gave out more dopamine(多巴胺), a chemical which “produces a feeling of being happy that continues after the threat(威胁)has passed,” reported Business Insider. What’s more, this feeling may bring people together. According to The Conversation, experiencing the attraction is just like “running a 5 kilometer race or climbing up a difficult climbing wall.” This means that people in scary situations are more likely to be uncertain and depend on others for support.“Being scared in a safe place is a source(来源) of enjoyment and makes us feel good physically and can even make us feel confident by reminding us that we can make it through a scary situation, we are strong,” researchers told The Independent.59. If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?(①= Para. (自然段)1 ②= Para. 2 ③= Para. 3 ④= Para. 4 ⑤= Para. 5)答案:B(5)The twentieth century saw greater changes than any century before:changes for the better changes for the worse; changes that brought a lot of benefits to human beings changes that put man in danger. Many things caused the changes but in my opinion the most important was the progress in science.Scientific research in physics and biology has vastly broadened our views. It has given us a deeper knowledge of the structure of matter and of the universe; it has brought us a better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous development.Technology-the application of science-has made big advances that have benefited us in nearly every part of life. The continuation of such activities in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings:in pure science-a wider and deeper knowledge in all fields of learning; in applied science-a more reasonable sharing of material benefits and better protection of the environment.Sadly however there is another side to the picture. The creativity of science has been employed in doing damage to mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and production of weapons of mass destruction has created a real danger to the continued existence of the human race on this planet. We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons Although their actual use has so far occurred only the Second World War the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for us was so large that if the weapons had actually been used the result could have been the ruin of the human race as well as of many kinds of animals.William Shakespeare said “The web of our life is of a mingled yarn(沙线) good and il together.”The above brief review of the application of only one part of human activities-science seems to prove what Shakespeare said. But does it have to be so? Must the ill always go together with the good? Are we biologically programmed for war?(①=Para.(自然段) 1 ②=Para. 2 ③=Para. 3 ④=Para. 4 ⑤=Para. 5 )A. B. C. D.。

His love was tested one unusual afternoon.“Your son’s been in an accident,” the lifeguard called my husband Mike in a hurry. “His eye was badly hurt by the point of his board.”Mike rushed our son to the hospital. He received 26 stitches(缝针) from the corner of his eye to the bridge of his nose.I drove to the hospital from my office and saw my son sitting there.“Daniel?”I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been terrible that day.“He’s been in an accident, but he’s going to be fine,” Mike comforted me.“It’s okay, Mom,” he said. “You don’t know how to surf anyway. I’ll be fine. The doctor said I can go back in the water in eight days.”Was he crazy? I wanted to tell him that he wasn’t allowed to go near water again until he was 20. But instead, I controlled myself, hoping he would forget about surfing. For the next seven days, he kept pressing me to let him go back to the board. One day, after repeated “No” to him for the 100th time, he beat me at my own game.“Mom, you taught us never to give up what we love.”I gave in. Back then, Daniel was just a boy with a deep love for surfing. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven’t yet considered the hours they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers. However, several studies have shown a serious problem: today’s teenagers lack media literacy(媒体素养). In other words, they have difficultly critically thinking about the information they see. One study that was done on middle school students showed that more than 80 percent of them couldn’t tell the difference between real stories and ads that looked like news.Standford professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The professor gave an example that shows why media literacy is important. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One focuses on(关注) the terrible road conditions. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. “With a news story, news stations tell you what they feel are the important details(细节). These details mostly depend on the opinions of the news director,” said John. “A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one side at this time. There is more going on.”Some experts think school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone—from parents to reporters—should help teenagers learn the skills. As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts suggest the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” John said.1.From the first paragraph, we can learn that teenagers today spend more time .ing the Internet than watching TVB.watching TV than studying at schoolC.studying at school than reading newspapers2.The underlined word “lack” in Paragraph 2 probably means .A.缺乏B.质疑C.误解3.The example shows that a person who has media literacy about a news story.A.should have the same opinions as othersB.could think about its good and bad sidesC.must know about all the important details4.Professor Kevin John would agree that .A.everyone is supposed to help children learn different skillsB.children should be taught media literacy as early as possibleC.news directors should report the news children are interested in5.The main idea of the passage is .A.how to develop teenagers’ media literacyB.where teenagers should be taught media literacyC.why teenagers are supposed to have media literacyC[2020·河北改编]Everyone needs help sometimes. People depend on one another. That’s why communities have special people ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.For example, what would we do without a community fire station? If a home catches on fire, as the Jackson place did last week, it might be burned down and people get hurt…or worse. We’re so lucky to have firemen to come to save people and put out the fire, safely. If the fire station hadn’t come so fast, the Jacksons might have lost everything. And what about our local police who protect our families, our homes and valuable things? The police have helped so many families this past year, especially saving people and pets and protecting our houses and other things after the heavy rains.Think about all the other service workers we have in this community. We have people who collect waste and rubbish and keep our community sanitary. We have road workers who put up and repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us, but our cars! And where would this community be without the teachers in our school and the doctors, and nurses in our community hospitals?Think again about what we eat every day;think again about what we wear every day. We cannot produce them, but we use them all the time. We get a lot from all these tireless workers who keep our community running. We need these people in the community. We depend on each other. Let’s support each other and help each other. Only in this way can we make our community a better place.1.What happened to the Jacksons last week?A.Their pets were lost.B.Their car was badly burnt.C.Their house caught on fire.2.Who offered help to families after the heavy rains?A.Firemen.B.Doctors.C.Local police.3.What does the underlined word “sanitary” mean?A.Clean.B.Safe.C.Quiet.4.Which question could best help us find out the writer’s purpose?A.Did the writer make us laugh?B.Did the writer want us to do something?C.Did the writer tell us about how to become a teacher?5.What is the best title for the passage?A.Policemen Save People’s LivesB.People Depend on Each OtherC.Service Workers Do Important Jobs【参考答案】A1—5ABACCB[主旨大意] 本文是一篇议论文。

专题训练(三)AAlong the river banks of Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claw (爪)on its wings when young. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature(特征)for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin. In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young.Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak(喙), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws.During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes.()1. What is the text mainly about?A. Hoatzins in dry and rainy season.B. The relatives and enemies of hoatzinsC. Primitive birds and hoatzins of the Amazon.D. The appearance and living habits of hoatzins()2. They had a head with long feathers on the top()4. Why do hoatzins collect together in smaller groups when the rainy season comes?A. To find more food.B. To protect themselves betterC. To keep themselves warmD. To produce their young.BThe 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added – a communications blackout caused by solar storms. After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London. Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London .“The Sun’s activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympic could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites,”said Professor Richard Harrison ,head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections(日冕物质抛射)occur in the Sun’s atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter.” A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometers per hour. Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturbcommunications, ” Professor Harrison added. The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory(SDO), which will take images of the Sun that 10 time clearer than the most advanced televisions available. The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high –tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares(太阳耀斑)and explosions as they occur.Professor Harrison Hold away, the lab’s director said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth “If we have advance warning, we’ll be able to reduce the damage. What you don’t want is things switching off for a week with no idea of what’s caused the problem, ” he said.()1. Solar Storm: Human Activities to Be TroubledCIn the kitchen of my mother’s houses there has always been a wooden stand (木架) with a small notepad(记事本)and a hole for a pencil.I’m looking for paper on which to note down the name of a book I am recommending to my mother. Over forty years since my earliest memories of the kitchen pad and pencil, five houses later ,the current paper and pencil look the same as they always did. Surely it can’t be the same pencil? The pad is more modern, but the wooden stand is definitely the original one.“I’m just amazed you still have the same stand for holding the pad and pencil after all these years.”I say to her, working back into the living –room with a sheet of paper and the pencil. “You still use a pencil. Can’t you afford a pen?”My mother replies a little sharply.”It works perfectly well. I’ve always kept the stand in the kitchen. I never knew when I might want to note down an idea, and I was always in the kitchen in these day.”Immediately I can picture her, hair wild, blue housecoat covered in flour, a wooden spoon in one hand, the pencil in the other, her mouth moving silently. My mother smiles and says,” One day I was cooking and watching baby Pauline, and I had a brilliant thought, but the stand was empty. One of the children must have taken the paper. So I just picked up the breadboard and wrote it all down on the back. It turned out to be a real breakthrough for solving the mathematical problem I was working on. ”This story –which happened before I was born-reminds me howextraordinary my mother was, and is also a gifted mathematician. I feel embarrassed that I complain about not having enough child-free time to work. Later, when my mother is in the bathroom, I go into her kitchen and turn over the breadboards. Sure enough, on the back of the smallest one, are some penciled marks I recognize as mathematics. Those symbols have traveled unaffected through fifty years, rooted in the soil of a cheap wooden breadboard, invisible(看不到的)exhibits at every meal.()1. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. This is especially true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary. There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.( )1. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics. It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore ,so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past .As we went beyond the city ,I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green .Then the first village came into sight ,Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave hack. From then on my journey became interesting .I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysianlife .Then everything came alive. Never mind that Beijing’s dry weather seldom produces now. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this New craze(热潮).Since Beijing’s first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed an astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr. Wei, a manager of a newly –opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe. In recent years ski resorts offeringnatural snow have opened in China. But many in faraway areas of the country and can’t really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.Beijing’s skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private(私有的)cars. This has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital’s suburbs(郊区). Which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people. According to Mr. Wei, about 40% of the visitor to his resort some in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government offices. The problem is making money. Starting ski resort requires quite a lot of money: hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines, making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment for hiring out to customers. The ski resort where Mr.Wei works cost nearly $4m to set up. And, as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others rush in an price wars break out .Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job.( )1. He appreciates the responsibility you've given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom. So why is he looking for a way out?He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him .He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions ,but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his god ideas into great ones .He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out ,exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That's what you want for him, too, isn't it?So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists—everyone —is to work harder to make sure they get the get the help they are demanding to reach their potential.
