In Charles Dickens' classic novel "The Orphan of the Foggy City," the protagonist, Oliver Twist, navigates through the grim and murky streets of Victorian London, struggling against poverty, cruelty, and injustice. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly industrializing society, Dickens paints a vivid picture of the harsh realities faced by the underprivileged during that era.Oliver Twist, an orphan born in a workhouse, represents the plight of the marginalized in society. His journey begins with his daring escape from the oppressive workhouse to London, where he encounters a diverse cast of characters, both benevolent and malevolent. Through Oliver's eyes, readers are exposed to the stark juxtaposition of wealthand poverty, as well as the moral decay that permeates society. One of the central themes of "The Orphan of the Foggy City" is the struggle for identity and belonging. Oliver, despite his humble beginnings, longs for acceptance and familial love. However, he is repeatedly met with betrayal and exploitation, particularly by the sinister Fagin and his gang of juvenile delinquents. Despite the hardships he faces, Oliver remains inherently good-natured, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.Another prominent theme is the corrupting influence of greed and power. His mother has been found very sick in the street, and she gives birth to Oliver just before she dies. Oliver is raised under the care of Mrs. Mann and the beadle Mr. Bumble in the workhouse. When it falls to Oliver’s lot to ask for more food on behalf of all the starving children in the workhouse, he is trashed, and then apprenticed to an undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry. Another apprentice of Mr. Sowerberry’s, Noah Claypole insults Oliver’s dead mother and the small and frail Oliver attacks him. However, Oliver is punished severely, and he runs away to London.
