In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. "whenever you feel like criticizing any one,"he told me,"just remember that all the people in this word haven't had the advantages that you've had."

THE GREAT GATSBY

Summary of the book
The Great Gatsby is a story told by Nick Carraway, who was once Gatsby's neighbor. As the story opens, Nick has just moved from the Midwest to West Egg, Long Island, seeking his fortune as a bond salesman(股票推销员). Shortly after his arrival, Nick travels across the Sound to the more fashionable East Egg to visit his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband, Tom, a very rich man whom Nick had known in college. There he meets professional golfer(高尔 夫球员) Jordan Baker. The Buchanans and Jordan Baker live luxurious (奢靡的) lives, contrasting sharply in sensibility and luxury with Nick's more modest and grounded lifestyle. When Nick returns home that evening, he notices his neighbor, Gatsby, mysteriously standing in the dark and stretching his arms toward the water, and a green light across the Sound.

The American Dream
• It means that in America one might hope to satisfy every material desire and thereby achieve happiness. It is deceptive because it proposes the satisfaction of all desires as an attainable goal and identifies desire with material. Fitzgerald once said, “America’s great promise is that something’s going to happen, but it never does. America is the moon that never rose.” This indictment of the American Dream could well serve as an epigraph for The Great Gatsby.

It led to the lover’ husband shot Gatsby. Gatsby died, only his father and Nick attended the funeral to lament him. Nick witnessed the virtual mood of human reality. At the end,
Gatsby was born into a poor family. He hated his family and never gave in poverty. In order to marry a beautiful and wealthy girl who is Daisy,he made every effort to get rid of his poverty and family backgound.
Nick backed to his hometown with a tragic mood.
When I read this novel again.I think it has hidden depths. It reavels American society during the 1920s and the corruption of the American dream. This novel actually aims at criticizing the situation of society at that time. For example,Gatsby held decadent parties every saterday night. This reflected the corruption of the American dream,as the crazy desire for money and pleasure.
