My boss’s daughter was studying in the Philippines. He asked me if my husband and I could take care of her. He thought his daughter would be able to improve her English communication skills in this way.

After days of thinking, we agreed. He then brought her here and left after 3 days. I thought that my boss’s daughter was well-mannered, but that was wrong.

After a month of staying in the Philippines, she started to show her true colors. When my husband asked her what she wanted for breakfast, she answered him in a rude way. From then on, we experienced fights at

home. There was a time when we didn’t talk to her for a week as a punishment of not being good to us. What I hated most was that she didn’t care about other people’s feelings. She ate ahead of us when we were still working and didn’t leave anything for us. So we had to separate her food from ours to avoid such a problem.

The worst thing about her was that she shouted at us. I was wondering if she did this to her parents. We told this to her parents, but unfortunately I didn’t think that solved the problem. This situation lasted for almost 8 months. Our patience (耐心) was tested during that time.

We tried to teach her everything we could to make her a better person, but I guess 8 months may not be enough. We even tried to understand her and adjust (调整) for her, but it didn’t work . I just hope that she learned something from us and from other Filipinos.

The world’s tallest mountain is in need of spring cleaning. A team of mountaineers flew to Mount Everest today to clean up tons of trash that was left on the mountain by its climbers.

Mount Everest is located in the Himalayas, on the border of Nepal and China. It’s the tallest mountain in the world. Climbers first successfully reached the peak in 1953. Since then, thousands of people have climbed Everest, leaving their trash along its trails. This includes ropes, tents and empty oxygen bottles. Nepal requires Everest climbers to bring down everything they take up to the mountain, but trash from climbs before the rule took effect still remains on the mountain.

The mountaineers plan to bring down 11,000 pounds of trash from Everest this spring. This is the best climbing time before the summer rainy season begins. They will receive $1.40 for every kilogram (about 2.2 pounds) of trash they carry down the mountain.

Eco Everest Expedition organized the cleaning activity. This is the fourth year one has been held. Leading the team is Apa, a guide from Nepal who has climbed Everest a record 20 times since 1989.“I want to do this for my country, my people and for Everest,”Apa says.

Apa says that when he first began climbing Everest, the trail to the top was covered in ice and snow. But now the path contains bare rocks with deep cracks from melting ice. This makes climbing up the mountain more dangerous. Apa, who grew up in the foothills of Everest but now lives in the United States, often takes part in activities to save the mountain from the effects of global warming and other problems.

California sea lions are the fastest of all the sea lions, reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers an hour when swimming. Males are much larger than females, measuring 2 to 2.5 meters and weighing 200 to 453 kilograms. Females only measure 1.5 to 2 meters and weigh 50 to 113 kilograms. They can also move fairly well while on land.

California sea lions can be found living along the Pacific coast of North America. They prefer to live in waters near rocky and sandy shores. On land, they often gather in large groups as many as 1,000 of them. While at sea, they travel in much smaller groups of around 10 or more. They communicate with one another through a series of sounds.

Their diet consists of a wide variety of fish and other sea animals. They are able to hold their breath for up to 10 minutes by slowing down their heart rate, allowing them to hunt for their prey for a longer period of time. They have been known to continuously hunt for up to 30 hours at a time , with their eyesight and hearing playing an important part in finding their food. Being so large, they do not have that many natural predators (天敌) that they need to be on the lookout for .

Eleven months after getting pregnant, the female will give birth to one baby on land. If the baby can survive long enough, they can live to be 20 to 25 years old.

California sea lions are not listed as an endangered species. This is largely due to laws such as the US Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Hopefully such acts will continue to show results.

63.What do we know about California sea lions?

A.They weigh at least 113 kilograms.

A.About 1,000 of them are often seen together on a shore.

There are a few rules in dog parks, and it is amazing how often these rules get broken. Follow these rules to make sure that you have a good time, and that you help everyone stay safe.

No leashes(绳套) in the Dog Park

Never bring a leash into the dog park. Once you are past the gate, the leash should come off as soon as possible. If you allow your dog in the dog park with a leash on, you are almost asking the other dogs to hurt your dog. The leash makes your dog show others that it is inferior (卑贱的) and should be made fun of.

_________________________________

This is not a hard rule and indeed many responsible dog owners bring water into the dog park. You’d better avoid bringing water into the dog park because it spreads germs (细菌) quickly. I do offer my dog water before and after going into the park beside my car. It gets dirty fast when many dogs are drinking water in the same place.

Do Not Bring Fierce Dogs into the Dog Park

Do you have a fierce dog who loves to bite at others’ heels? Do not bring it to the dog park. This is a sad decision for dog owners to make, as they love their pets. If other dogs are leaving with their tails between their legs, or yelping, then your dog is being a bully. If your dog does this once in a while, it may not be a problem. If it always does this to other dogs, you need to stop going to the dog park.

There are hundreds of dog park websites. So find a good dog park website, and then keep it for future use.

67. According to Paragraph 2, if your dog has a leash on it in the dog park,

_______________.

A. it may try to hurt other dogs.

B. it may look down upon other dogs.

C. it may be made fun of by other dogs.

D. it may run away from you.

68. What’s the best title for Paragraph 3?

A. Do not feed your dog.

B. No water in the dog park.

C. Be a responsible dog owner.

D. Do not spread germs in the park.

69. If your dog is a bully, it means it _________.

A. looks very big

B. likes biting other dogs

C. hates going to the dog park

D. likes dealing with other dogs

70. The writer wrote this passage to _____________.

A. tell dog owners how to keep their dogs safe

B. tell dog owners how to take care of their dogs

C. help dog owners know some dog park rules

D. introduce a good dog park website

Dear Lucy,

How are you getting along these days?I have studied in Xiaogan Senior Middle School as a freshman for more than two months, and I can’t wait to share my feelings with you.

Our school is an ideal place to live and study in. There are nice plants, beautiful flowers, friendly classmates and hard-working teachers who are always ready to help us with our studies.

However, I am not doing very well in maths at present. And there is still some time before I can be really independent. I will try my best to catch up with others and learn to live by myself.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Ming
