1As soon as I walked outside, I was greeted with the shimmering white blanket of cold. Despite the chill overwhelming my skin, inside I was warm. I felt as though I could be giving off heat; I had the desire to stay out in this freeze for hours. It was the type of day that speaks to you through its elements; I took a deep breath to hear more snow was coming. As I walked I looked up, trying to realize what made this day so beautiful, so serene. It was as if time had been put temporarily on hold and I along with it. Or maybe I was the only one unpaused…Either way, the solitude was comforting, and I sensed myself floating away. I sat down on the edge of a curb and listened. All there was to hear was the wind rushing over the top of my head and circling some old, cracking leaves some yards away. To me it was the reassuring sound of nature, trying not to be forgotten. It did start to snow. None of those little flurries, but big, fat flakes which clung immediately to their surface. Then it was time to go and my reverie had to end. As I began walking again, I drifted back into this time frame, calm and cleared. Now if only I could remember where I was going.

1. In global unemployment, a sea of young facesThe global recession has caused unemployment rates to rise almost everywhere, and for almost every group. But it was particularly hard on young people, whose unemployment rates rose much faster than those of adults.Just how badly young people were affected appears to have depended partly on how severe the local downturn was and partly on local labor practices and laws. Some of the hardest-hit young people were in countries with the most protections for older workers. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which includes 29 mostly rich countries, released a study this week of youth unemployment in advance of a meeting of labor ministers from the Group of 20 countries, scheduled for Monday in Washington. "There are currently nearly 15 million youth unemployed in the O.E.C.D. area, about four million more than at the end of 2007," stated the study. The largest unemployment rate for young people — defined as ages 15 to 24 in most countries and 16 to 24 in others —was in Spain, where in the final quarter of last year the unemployment rate was 39.6 percent, more than double the 19.1 percent of two years earlier. For adults, the rate rose to 16.9 percent from 7.4 percent. Spain, like many European countries, provides protection for those with permanent jobs, a fact that led some employers to expand the use of temporary jobs, which provide fewer benefits. "Most of the job losses were recorded among workers on temporary jobs, many of whom are youth," the study stated. The exception to the trend was in Germany, where unemployment among young people actually declined, to 10.3 percent, over the two-year period. The study attributed that in part to "a rather successful apprenticeship system that ensures a relatively smooth transition from school to work for most youth.""For disadvantaged youth lacking basic education, a failure in their first experience on the labor market is often difficult to make up and may expose them to long-lasting scarring effects."

4 Besides the bookcase in the living room, which was always called "the library", there were the encyclopedia tables and dictionary stand under windows in our dining room. Here to help us grow up arguing around the dining room table were the Unabridged Webster, the Columbia Encyclopedia, Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia, the Lincoln Library of Information, and later the Book of Knowledge. In "the library", inside the bookcase were books I could soon begin on — and I did, reading them all alike and as they came, straight down their rows, top shelf to bottom. My mother read secondarily for information; she sank as a hedonist into novels. She read Dickens in the spirit in which she would have eloped with him. The novels of her girlhood that had stayed on in her imagination, besides those of Dickens and Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson, were Jane Eyre, Trilby, The Woman in White, Green Mansions, King Solomon's Mines.

As a student, I think the most important thing in college is to find a balance between academic and social life. On one hand, we come to college to learn and prepare for our future careers. Therefore, it is crucial to take our studies seriously and strive for academic excellence. On the other hand, college is also a time for personal growth and exploration. We should not miss out on the opportunities to make new friends, join clubs and organizations, and participate in various events and activities.Personally, I try to maintain a healthy balance between my academic and social life. I prioritize my studies and make sure to attend all my classes and complete assignments on time. However, I also make time for social activities such as hanging out with friends, attending parties, and participating in extracurricular activities. By doing so, Inot only improve my academic performance but also enhance my interpersonal skills and broaden my horizons. To illustrate, last semester, I joined a debate club on campus. Through participating in debates and attending club meetings, I not only improved my critical thinking and public speaking skills but also made new friends who share similar interests. Moreover, I had the opportunity to attend a regional debate competition where I met students from different colleges and gained valuable insights into different perspectives and ideas. In summary, finding a balance between academic and social life is crucial for college students. Byprioritizing our studies while also making time for social activities, we can not only achieve academic success but also enhance our personal growth and development.

No Ready-made Fruit in God’s HandThree guys finally got the God through trials and errors. They were eager to ask God for help. Right after the God asked what they want, the first man claim a big yard, the second a farmstead, and the third a bar of gold. God promised them. At last, the first man was given a pile of bricks, the second a bag of seed and the third a mass of sand.2、虫子的压力有这么一种虫子,它的体长还不到一毫米,也许因为在电子显微镜下看起来像一头黑熊,所以人们叫它雄虫。

I passed all the other courses that I took at my University, but I could never pass botany. This was because all botany stud ents had to spend several hours a week in a laboratory looking through a microscope at plant cells, and I coul d never see through a microscope. I never once saw a cell through a microscope. This used to enrage my instructor. He woul d wander around the laboratory pleased with the progress all the stud ents were making in drawing the involved and, so I am told, interesting structure of fl ower cells, until he came to me. l woul d just be standing there. "I can't see anything," I woul d say. He woul d begin patiently enough, explaining how anybody can see through a microscope, but he would always end up in a fury; claiming that I coul d too see through a microscope but I just pretend ed that I couldn’t. “It takes away from the beauty of fl owers anyway," I used to tell him. "We are not concerned with beauty in this course," he would say, "We are concerned solely with what I may call the mechanics of fl owers." “Well,” I'd say, "I can't see anything." "Try it just once again," he'd say, and l woul d put my eye to the microscope and see nothing at all, except now and again a nebul ous milky substance —a phenomenon of maladjustment. You were supposed to see a vivid, restless cl ockwork of sharply d efined plant cells. "I see what looks like a lot of milk," I would tell him. This, he claimed, was the result of my not having adjusted the microscope properly, so he woul d readjust it for me, or rather, for himself. And I would look again and see milk.
