It also points out the risk of buying unnecessary things at high prices.I think online shopping has made the lives of many people much easier and more enriched, which partly explains the Nov. 11 e-shopping phenomenon.Personally I have been able to buy many things online that I could not find in our local stores, such as an old Japanese comic I bought from a comic book website recently. Shopping online has also allowed me to save a lot of money. This year, for example, I purchased a pair of glasses from an American website. These glasses cost 1500 yuan at the department store near my home. But I paid only 100 dollars online, less than half the department store price!!!Of course we must be careful when shopping online. We should only use websites that have a good reputation for quality and honesty otherwise our personal information may be stolen and the goods we buy may be of poor quality.广州市2014届高三年级调研测试英语评分标准(主观题部分)一、语法填空:按所给的参考答案给分,每小题1.5分。

Paul Hogan,is the main character in the fictional Crocodile Dundee film series consisting of Crocodile Dundee,Crocodile Dundee II,and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. The character is a crocodile hunter, hence the nickname. In the first film,Crocodile Dundee,Mick is visited by a New York reporter,Sue Charlton, who travels to Australia to investigate a report she heard of a crocodile hunter, who had his leg bitten off by a crocodile in the outback. The hunter supposedly walked more than a hundred miles back to civilization and miraculously survived his injuries. However,by the time she meets him, the story turns out to be a somewhat exaggerated legend where the“bitten-off leg”turns out to be just being some bad scarring on his leg;a“love bite”as Mick calls it.Still intrigued by the idea of “Crocodile Dundee”,Sue continues with the story. They travel together out to where the incident occurred, and follow his route through the bush to the nearest hospital.Despite his old-fashioned views, the pair eventually become close, especially after Mick saves Sue from a crocodile attack.Feeling there is still more to the story,Sue invites Mick back to New York with her,as his first trip to a city(or“first trip anywhere,”as Dundee says). The rest of the film depicts Dundee as a“fish out of water,”showing how, despite his expert knowledge of living outdoors,he knows little of city life.Mick meets Sue’s boyfriend,Richard, but they do not get along.By the end of the film,Mick is on his way home, lovesick, when Sue realizes she loves Mick, too, and not Richard. She runs to the subway station to colourful history unknown to most people.Scientific discoveries have shown that silk production existed in China from around2500B.C.,although it could be much older. For hundreds of years,China kept the secret of silk to itself as one for the most closely protected secrets in history.Anyone revealing the secret of silkworms or trying to take silkworm eggs out of ancient China was punished by death. At one time silk was reserved only for the Chinese emperor.Gradually, others began wearing silk.In addition to being used for clothing, silk came to have industrial uses in ancient China, something that happened in the West only in modern times.Silk was used to make musical instruments, fishing lines, weapons, ropes and even paper.During the Han Dynasty silk became a form of money.Farmers paid taxes in both rice and silk. The prices of goods were calculated in lengths of silk just as they had once been calculated in gold. The importance of silk is even reflected in the Chinese language. For example,of the5000most common Chinese characters, around500have silk as their“key”.In spite of their secrecy, the Chinese eventually lost their monopoly on silk production. It reached Korea in around200B.C.when immigrants from China arrived there.Silk production came to India in300A.D..It was not until500A.D.that silk production came to Europe when travellers smuggled out silkworms in hollow tubes of bamboo. These were used to establish silkindustry in Rome(modern-day Italy),although Chinese silk was still considered to be the best.Silk was brought to Rome from China by means of the Silk Road. There were actually two Silk Roads, one over land and one on the sea.The land route in particular had a huge effect in history. All sorts of trade goods—silver, gold, jade, porcelain—passed along this road.Ideas travelled the Silk Road too.For example the religion of Buddhism was carried to China from India by traders on the Silk Road. The Silk Road created the first international culture, exposing many people to the ideas and treasures of both Western and Chinese cultures.31.How was China able to keep the secret of silk production?A.It refused to sell its silk to other is one of the most annoying words in the English language and it seems there is no escaping it.The word“huh?”is in worldwide use,a study found.Researchers discovered that languages spoken in countries from Ghana and Laos to Iceland and Italy all include“huh?”,or something that sounds very like it.They said that while the study may sound silly, the word is an absolutely necessary part of speech.Without it and similar words, it would be impossible to show that we haven’t heard or understood what had been said and this would lead to constant misunderstandings. But while other words used in the same context, such as“sorry”or“what”,vary widely across languages,“huh?”remains unchanged. The Dutch researchers carefully studied ten languages from around the world, including Siwu, which is spoken in Ghana, and an Australian Aboriginal language,as well as Italian,Spanish, Dutch and Mandarin Chinese. They analysed tapes of recorded conversations for words that sounded like“huh?”and were used to request that whatever had just been said be repeated. All contained a version of“huh?”. The word was also found in another21languages.While there were subtle differences in each country, all sounded basically the same. This is surprising because normally unrelated languages will use very different words to describe the same thing. For instance, the Japanese for“dog”is“inu”,while the French is“chien”. It is thought that languages around the world have developed their own version of“huh?”because the sound is quick and simple to form,as well as being easily understood. The researchers, said that it might seem unimportant to carry out scientific research into a word like“huh?”but in fact this little word is an essential tool in human communication. They also have an answer for those who claim that“huh?”isn’t a word. They say that it qualifies because of the small differences in its pronunciation in different languages. It also can be considered a word because it’s something we learn to say, rather than a grunt or cry that we are born knowing how to make.36.According to researchers, the word“huh?”is very important in speech because of________.A.its stable meaning in language developmentB.its important function in communicationC.its simple and easy sound and spellingD.its popularity in every language37.What is the natural response if you hear the lady you’re speaking to say“huh?”?A.You should ask her to repeat what she says before that.B.You should apologize to her for speaking in a low voice.C.You should invite her to share her different views politely.D.You should try to repeat what you’ve just said in a clearer way.38.The main method used in the research of“huh?”was________.A.interviewing language experts in universitiesB.talking with people from ten different countriesC.analyzing the recorded conversations in different languagesparing different words with the same meaning in different languages39.According to researchers,“huh?”should be considered a word rather than a sound because________.A.it is listed in most dictionariesB.it is something humans learn to sayC.there is a clear and consistent spelling of the wordD.there is a big difference in the way it pronounces in different languages40.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To inform readers about research on the worldwide used word“huh?”.B.To argue that“huh?”is the most important word in every language.C.To entertain readers by relating similar idioms in different languages.D.To instruct readers of the differences of“huh?”in different languages.DEver wonder how this season’s celebrations affect the environment?Guest blogger Krista Fairles takes an amusing look at this very topic:The holidays are a wonderful, cheerful time whenmost people wait for Santa to bring them presents. But I’mnot like most people.I spend my time wondering just whatthe environmental impacts of Santa Claus and his reindeerare, and more importantly, how I can calculate thoseimpacts.Lately I’ve been particularly curious as to whetherSanta’s old sled is a clean green flying machine,or if he should be replacing his8reindeer with an environmentally-friendly car.I should mention that, surprisingly,I was unable to find statistics specific to Santa’s magical flying reindeer,so these calculations use numbers from various sources and may not represent actual pollution caused by Santa and his animals. In other words, don’t complain to the government about the damage Santa is causing the environment based on this article.Santa’s yearly trip around the globe is44,000km long, twice the average of a North American driver. If we assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip, then reindeer power only needs to push Santa’s sled forward. To complete the trip in12hours,I estimate they must travel at a speed of about3100km/h.To travel at this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible980million calories each!!So the next question is:how much food is in980million calories?Well,if they’re eating corn, they’d need to eat16,500lbs each—or1.6acres of food.Growing12.8acres of corn has its own implications for the environment that we’ll leave for another calculation. We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are“letting out”some of that corn in the form of methane(甲烷,沼气).A resting cow produces110kg of methane per year,so flying reindeer would each let out about4.8tons.With methane causing20times the global warming damage of CO2,and the altitude increasing that damage by1000%that another20times, we can put Santa’s round-trip emissions at15,488tons.This is much more than the100tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!Bad Santa.41.Which aspect does the writer NOT include in her analyses about reindeer’s influence on environment?A.Distance covered.B.Calories consumed.C.Tons of waste let out.D.Money spent on food.42.According to Paragraph6,how many acres of corn would Santa need to feed10reindeer?A.1.6.B.16.C.12.8.D.128.43.Which of the following statements would the writer most probably agree with?A.Christmas celebrations are really a waste of money.B.Vegetarians are more likely to survive than meat-eaters.C.Raising animals has a negative influence on environment.D.The car industry does less harm to environment than farming.44.Which of the following words best describes the language style of the passage?A.Humourous and concerned.B.Cheerful and friendly.C.Academic and formal.D.Serious and boring.45.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A.Is Santa driving clean and green?B.Santa, watch where you’re going!C.Santa Claus is coming to town!D.Let’s reduce waste on Christmas celebrations!第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

I had never talked with a botanist before, and I found him very interesting. I sat there absorbed and listened while he spoke of unusual plants and his experiments(he even told me astonishing facts about the simple potato).I had a small indoor garden of my own-and he was good enough to tell me how to solve some of my problems. As I said, we were at a dinner party. There must have been a dozen other guests, but I broke an important rule of politeness. I ignored everyone else and talked for hours to the botanist. Midnight came. I said good night to everyone and departed. The botanist then turned to our host and said many nice things about me, including that I was a “most interesting conversationalist”. An interesting conversationalist? I had said hardly anything at all. I couldn‟t have said anything if I had wanted to without changing the subject, for I didn‟t know any more about plants than I knew about sharks. But I had done this one thing: I had listened carefully. I listened because I was really interested. And he fell it. Naturally that pleased him. That kind of listening in one of the best ways to show respect to others, and it makes them feel great too. “Few human beings,” wrote Jack Woodford in Strangers in Love, “can resist the sweet effect of rapt attention.” I went even further than that. I was “ sincere in my admiration and generous in my praise”.I told him that I had been hugely entertained and instructed. I told him I wished I had his knowledge. I told him that I should love to wander the fields with him. What‟s more, it was all true. And so I had him thinking of me as a good conversationalist when, in reality, I had only been a good listener and had encouraged him to talk.26. I‟m thinking of doing an updated one which can measure his weight before he is fed ,just to make sure he‟s no t putting on too much puppy fat,” explained Nat.How Nat‟s Twitter Feeder Works:When a message is sent to @feedtoby it is received by a mini-computer that is linked to the food machine. When the mini-computer receives the message, a bell rings and Toby comes running over and sits in front of the feeding machine. Dating back to the Beisong Dynasty, White Tea has a long history and it is mainly grown in Fujian and Taiwan. White Tea is famous for its beautiful silver-needle-like shape, its sweet taste and its medicinal effects. The longer it is preserved, the better effect it has. White Tea is good for health if drunk frequently and can be used in preventing diseases like high blood pressure and helping relieve the pain in of toothache and fever. 读写任务:Version 1In the passage, the writer describes how he forgot his family's thrifty tradition and eventually met with financial difficulty. This helped him realize the importance of thriftiness and start to practise thriftiness again. To me, being thrifty means valuing money, making the most of what I have and trying never to spend beyond my budget or on unnecessary things.Thrift is an old and dated concept to many young people. As life has become a lot easier, people tend to indulge in a luxurious lifestyle. That's why I regard this nearly forgotten practice more important now than ever before.Actually, to be thrifty can be really simple. Most of the time, it's simply a matter of being more thoughtful in our everyday life: turning off lights when leaving the room, not using the air-conditioners unless necessary, bringing our water bottle from home rather than spending money on soft drinks, using public transports to avoid needless driving and parking, ordering just enough food when eating out, and so forth. To do these might mean doing things others won't do and controlling our desires. But remember, a smart person is not one who always tries to impress others by showing off their wealth, but one who spares no effort to save for the future and for others .Version 2The writer recalls the stress and economic problems he had after moving to a big city forgetting the thrifty habits of his youth and wasting all his money. At last, however, he learned his lesson and became thrifty once more.I think a thrifty person is someone who uses only what they need and avoids wastes. Being thrifty can save us money, but more importantly, it is necessary if we want to save our planet. In the face of growing environmental problems, I believe it is more necessary than ever to reduce the amount of rubbish and pollution each individual produces. If we fail to control the amount o' waste we produce, our society and our planet are doomed and this concern must outweigh an) short-term satisfaction we get from buying and consuming more.It is for this reason that I buy as much fresh food as possible, rather than packaged food whichrequires much more energy to produce and adds to our pollution problems. I also try to cycle or walk everywhere I go, or at least use public transport rather than getting a taxi o depending on a private car. Actions like these keep me fit and healthy, help the environment and leave me with more money in my pocket! Why don't you try these too ?You might really enjoy the results.基础写作评分说明:基础写作主要考查考生语言结构的应用能力:能够用正确、规范的语言表达特定的内容。

Because of its usefulness, English is now learned by billions of people everywhere. As far as I’m concerned, it is of great importance to learn English, for the simple reason that, serving as a universal language, English enables us to communicate with people from all over the world, and equally importantly, learn about foreign cultures.Reasons people learn English vary. Some take it up out of interest, and enjoy the challenge of learning a new language. Others learn English to get a promising job requiring English language skills.A recent experience showed me just how important learning English could be for my future. Last year, I had the honour of giving a welcoming speech to the British teachers on behalf of my school. I spoke fluent English and this left a deep impression on the guests. The guests were so impressed that they invited me to join a 3-month training programme in England for free. While in England I not only developed some practical skills but also gained invaluable overseas work experience. All in all, emphasis should be placed on English studies as it is good for our future.Version 2The article describes how English has gradually spread over the world and became today’s language of international communication in many fields. Because of its usefulness, English is now learned by billions of people everywhere.I am one of those billions of people learning English. Of course part of my reason for studying English is one of the requirements of my education system. If I want to be admitted into a university, then English is essential. It is also important for my future. My dream is becoming a scientist and most important science research is written in English, even when the writer is from a non-English speaking country. In order to understand the research and to become familiar with the latest scientific ideas, I must know English well.Besides work benefits, knowing English can bring great enjoyment. Many people who love pop music and movies also like learning English because so many great songs and movies come from America and Americans use English. In my school, we have started a movie club, where each week one member brings a movie to watch and then we discuss in English. This is really a great experience because it not only helps to improve our English but it’s also a great way to learn about the culture of foreign countries.。

I had never talked with a botanist before, and I found him very interesting. I sat there absorbed and listened while he spoke of unusual plants and his experiments (he even told me astonishing facts about the simple potato). I had a small indoor garden of my own -- and he was good enough to tell me how to solve some of my problems. As I said, we were at a dinner party. There must have been a dozen other guests, but I broke an important rule of politeness. I ignored everyone else and talked for hours to the botanist.Midnight came. I said good night to everyone and departed. The botanist then turned to our host and said many nice things about me, including that I was a “most interesting conversationalist ”.An interesting conversationalist? I had said hardly anything at all. I couldn't have said anything if I had wanted to without changing the subject, for I didn't know any more about plants than I knew about sharks. But I had done this one thing: I had listened carefully. I listened because I was really interested. And he felt it. Naturally that pleased him. That kind of listening is one of the best ways to show respect to others, and it makes them feel great too. “Few human beings," wrote Jack Woodford in Strangers in Love "can resist the sweet effect of rapt attention.” I went even further than that. I was “sincere in my admiration and generous in my praise”.I told him that I had been hugely entertained and instructed. I told him I wished I had his knowledge. I told him that I should love to wander the fields with him. What's more, it was all true. And so I had him thinking of me as a good conversationalist when, in reality, I had only beena good listener and had encouraged him to talk.26. From Paragraph l, we can learn that the writer_________A. was deeply moved by the botanist's talkB. was amazed by what he was hearingC. was not in a comfortable situationD. behaved politely and properly27. Which of the following does the writer describe as a rule of politeness at dinner parties?A. Avoiding discussions about politics and religion.B. Listening carefully to what another guest says.C. Arriving and leaving at the appropriate time.D. Giving attention to all those in attendance.28. The underlined expression "rapt attention" in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaningto__________A. full understandingB. strong interestC. great uncertaintyD. little curiosity29. According to the writer, which of the following is an important characteristic of a good conversationalist?A. Listening attentively and encouraging the other side to continue.B. Encouraging the other side by sharing his/her own opinions.C. Promising a future meeting for more communication.D. Expressing respect by nodding his/her head.30. What is the purpose of the passage?A. To prove the writer is an interesting conversationalist.B. To share an interesting experience at a dinner party.C. To explain what makes a good conversationalist.D. To show that botanists can be really talkative.BA British dog-lover has invented a high-tech way of feeding his pet by Twitter(推特,流行社交网络).Computer expert Nat Morris, 30, has designed a system to give his pet a "tweet treat" by sending him a Twitter message. His dog Toby: gets some delicious dog biscuits from a computer-controlled food machine whenever Nat sends a message to “@ feedtoby “.Nat often works away from home and isn't always able to feed Toby by hand. But his new invention allows Nat to feed his dog from anywhere in the world.Nat said, "Toby absolutely loves it. At first he didn't know what was going on. Now he sits underneath the machine, wagging his tail and waiting for the food to drop. "Nat fills the food machine with small pieces of dog biscuits, but not too many in case four-year-old Toby gets too many messages. And Nat has even equipped his house with an online camera so he can see Toby enjoying the food at his home. But one problem is that friends and family have been so amaze d with the “tweet treat" machine that they have started sending tweets to Toby too. So Nat has had to restrict feeding time to make sure Toby doesn't turn into Tubby.“People have been sending him tweets at all hours of the day, so I had to limit it to be tween 9 a. m. and 9 p. m. I'm thinking of doing an updated one which can measure his weight before he is fed, just to make sure he's not putting on too much puppy fat, “explained Nat.How Nat's Twitter Feeder works:When a message is sent to @ feedtoby, it is received by a mini-computer that is linked to the food machine. When the mini-computer receives the message, a bell rings and Toby comes running over and sits in front of the feeding machine. Next, the machine's motor pulls open a trap door which releases a serving of food. The doggy biscuits then drop into Toby's food bowl. Finally a digital camera takes a photo of him and sends it back to Nat on Twitter - so he knows Toby has been fed.31. Nat has invented a high-tech way to feed his dog because he________.A. wants his friends to feed TobyB. has very strong computing skillsC. is often too busy to feed his dogD. doesn't like to feed Toby by hand32. Why has Nat decided to limit the feeding machine's operating time?A. He doesn't want Toby to get too fat.B. He fears the machine will run out of food.C. He wants his friends to stop feeding Toby.D. He doesn't want Toby to be woken up at night.33. It can be learned from the passage that Toby_________A. sits beneath his feeder all day longB. is now used to being fed by machineC. doesn't know what happens to the feederD. no longer receives tweets from Nat's friends34. Which of the following shows the correct order of how the Twitter Feeder works?a. The bell goes off.b. A message is sent to @ feedtoby.c. The mini-computer gets the message.d. In which section of the newspaper would you most probably find this passage?A. Technology.B. Health.C. Environment.D. Style.CNo one knows why we dream, but some dreams might be connected to the mental processes that help us learn. In a recent study, scientists found a connection between dreams and better memory in people learning a new skill. So perhaps one way to learn something new is to practice, practice, practice -- and then sleep on it."I was very surprised by this finding,” said Robert Stickgold, a Harvard University scientist who led the study. In the study, 100 college students each spent an hour on a computer, trying to get through amaze (谜宫). The maze was difficult, and the study participants had to start from a different place each time they tried -- making it even more difficult. Then, for the first 90 minutes of a five-hour break, half of the participants were required to stay awake while half were asked to sleep. Participants who stayed awake were asked to describe their thoughts. Participants who slept were asked to describe any dream they had.Stickgold and his colleagues wanted to know about NREM, or non-REM sleep. REM stands for “rapid eye movement, “which is what happens during REM sleep. This period of sleep often brings strange dreams to a sleeper, although dreams can happen in both kinds of sleep. Stickgold wanted to know what people were dreaming about when their eyes weren't moving, during NREM sleep. Other studies have found a connection between NREM brain activity and learning ability.Four of the 50 people who slept said their dreams were about the maze. Later, when these four people tried the computer maze again, they were able to complete it faster.Stickgold believes the dream itself doesn't help a person learn -- it's the other way around. He suspects that such dreams are caused by the brain processes associated with learning. All the maze-dreamers had done the task poorly the first time, which makes Stickgold wonder if the NREM dreams show up when a person finds a new task particularly difficult. People who had other dreams, or people who didn't sleep, didn't show the same improvement.36. In the first stage of the study, the participants were asked to________A. design a maze on computerB. find their way out of a mazeC. decide where to begin a mazeD. remember a location in a maze37. What happened to the participants during the break?A. Half of them were woken up when they started to dream.B. Half of them were asked to dream about the maze.C. All of them were asked to describe their thoughts.D. Half of them were asked to sleep for 90 minutes.38. What can we learn from the passage?A. Everyone will dream about a new skill after learning it.B. Stickgold was the first to study dreams and learning.C. During NREM sleep, people usually don't dream.D. Unusual dreams often occur during REM sleep.39. According to the last paragraph, before sleeping the maze-dreamers________A. found it difficult to do the mazeB. were greatly interested in the mazeC. were mostly slow and poor thinkersD. completed the maze faster than others40. Which of the following statements best summarizes the study's conclusion?A. Dreams have a role in learning.B. Dreams have no basis in reality.C. Dreams are important for health.D. Dreams are the best way to study.DThe recent publication of autobiographies by two of Britain's greatest scientists, biologist Richard Dawkins and physicist Stephen Hawking is a wonderful opportunity to compare and contrast these two remarkable men. Surprisingly, they have rather more in common than we think. Most striking is the similarity in their backgrounds. They were born in the early 1940s to middle class families -- not wealthy but comfortably off, with a strong commitment to academic excellence and public service. Both families were keen to send their boys to Oxford University --and both succeeded, Dawkins studying zoology and Hawking physics.Neither man has a very positive view of his early university life. Hawking describes the attitude at Oxford in the 1950s and 1960s as very anti-work, "You were supposed to either be brilliant without effort or fail. Hard work was looked down upon by students and we all pretended that nothing was worth making an effort for. “He estimates that he studied for no more than an hour a day as an undergraduate student (本科生).Undergraduate life was somewhat more rewarding for Dawkins. Like Hawking, he wasn't particularly hard-working and never attended his lectures. But he found Oxford's system of weekly essay-based lessons with an academic tutor useful, "It was really only the tutorial system that educated me.”For both men, scientific life really got going as postgraduates after 1962. Dawkins, who remained at Oxford, describes brilliantly the academic competition among the postgraduate students, which he believed helped push him to develop the ideas that formed the basis of his most famous book, The Selfish Gene. This volume transformed scientific thinking aboutDarwinian evolution.Hawking, on the other hand, moved to Cambridge University after graduation, where his research into the universe would eventually make him the most famous physicist since Albert Einstein. He writes movingly about the disease which progressively crippled his entire body, leaving him unable to move and only able to communicate using a computer controlled by his eyes. Although communication is slow - he can write only 3 words a minute using the machine - his illness has not affected his mind or his research on space-time and the origins of the universe. Each book is recommended individually as a personal introduction to an important scientific thinker. Read together, they provide a superb background to the academic and social climate of postwar British research.41. Which of the following describes a similarity in Hawking's and Dawkins' backgrounds?A. They were both from wealthy families.B. They studied the same subject in university.C. They graduated from the same secondary school.D. They both came from families that valued good education.42. Why did Hawking study very little as an undergraduate student?A. He preferred doing his own research and experiments.B. Students considered it inappropriate to study too much.C. The materials discussed in lectures were very easy for him.D. He was more interested in making friends with his classmates.43. According to Dawkins, what helped him develop his most important ideas?A. His hard work as an undergraduate.B. The support he received from his family.C. The excellent tutors at Oxford University.D. The competition from other postgraduate students.44. What can we reasonably infer about the two scientists from the passage?A. Dawkins worked much harder than Hawking as an undergraduate.B. Hawking is more respected by the scientific community.C. They knew each other during their studies at Oxford.D. Hawking has experienced more physical difficulties.45. What is the function of the last paragraph?A. To state which book the writer prefers.B. To recommend the reviewed books to readers.C. To summarize the achievements of the two scientists.D. To suggest the order in which the books should be read.笫二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down."I thought it was beautiful,"she said, explaining why she'd taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters,"like a message from above."Her husband,Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson,a local news reporter.Alice put it in the reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers.I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time.In short,I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly.Neither did my family.Eventually, however,I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations,I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone.Several months later,I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty.I would be going to a small village near Abuja,Nigeria.Where? What?Nigeria?I had no idea. But I was about to find out. After completing my training,I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation.Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family.I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so,I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me.Sometime during that period,I try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes﹣about 60,000 in total﹣fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back.As expected, the company told him that they didn't.Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed,he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents. The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜寻)because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area.Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1,600shoes.With this data,he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study. As the result of his work,Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of AMichael J. “Crocodile Dundee” (also called Mick), played by Paul Hogan, is the main character in the fictional Crocodile Dundee film series consisting of Crocodile Dundee, Crocodile Dundee II, and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. The character is a crocodile hunter, hence the nickname. In the first film, Crocodile Dundee, Mick is visited by a New York reporter, Sue Charlton, who travels to Australia to investigate a report she heard of a crocodile hunter, who had his leg bitten off by a crocodile in the outback. The hunter supposedly walked more than a hundred milesback to civilization and miraculously survived his injuries. However, by the time she meets him, the story turns out to be a somewhat exaggerated legend where the “bitten-off leg” turns out to be just being some bad scarring on his leg; a “love bite” as Mick calls it. Still intrigued by the idea of “Crocodile Dundee”, Sue continues with the story. They t ravel together out to where the incident occurred, and follow his route through the bush to the nearest hospital. Despite his old-fashioned views, the pair eventually become close, especially after Mick saves Sue from a crocodile attack.Feeling there is still more to the story, Sue invites Mick back to New York with her, as his first trip to a city (or “first trip anywhere,” as Dundee says). The rest of the film depicts Dundee as a “fish out of water,” showing how, despite his expert knowledge of living o utdoors, he knows little of city life. Mick meets Sue’s boyfriend, Richard, but they do not get along. By the end of the film, Mick is on his way home, lovesick, when Sue realizes she loves Mick, too, and not Richard. She runs to the subway station to stop Mick from leaving and, by passing on messages through the packed-to-the-gills crowd, she tells him she won’t marry Richard, and she loves him instead. With the help of the other people in the subway, Mick and Sue have a loving reunion as the film ends.26. Which of the following statements is true about Mick?A. Scientific discoveries have shown that silk production existed in China from around 2500 B.C., although it could be much older. For hundreds of years, China kept the secret of silk to itself as one for the most closely protected secrets in history. Anyone revealing the secret of silkworms or trying to take silkworm eggs out of ancient China was punished by death. At one time silk was reserved only for the Chinese emperor. Gradually, others began wearing silk. In addition to being used for clothing, silk came to have industrial uses in ancient China, something that happened in the West only in modern times. Silk was used to make musicalinstruments, fishing lines, weapons, ropes and even paper. During the Han Dynasty silk became a form of money. Farmers paid taxes in both rice and silk. The prices of goods were calculated in lengths of silk just as they had once been calculated in gold. The importance of silk is even reflected in the Chinese language. For example, of the 5000 most common Chinese characters, around 500 have silk as their “key”.In spite of their secrecy, the Chinese eventually lost their monopoly on silk production. It reached Korea in around 200 B.C. when immigrants from China arrived there. Silk production came to India in 300 A.D.. It was not until 500 A.D. that silk production came to Europe when travellers smuggled out silkworms in hollow tubes of bamboo. These were used to establish silk industry in Rome (modern-day Italy), although Chinese silk was still considered to be the best.Silk was brought to Rome from China by means of the Silk Road. There were actually two Silk Roads, one over land and one on the sea. The land route in particular had a huge effect in history. All sorts of trade goods — silver, gold, jade, porcelain — passed along this road. Ideas travelled the Silk Road too. For example the religion of Buddhism was carried to China from India by traders on the Silk Road. The Silk Road created the first international culture, exposing many people to the ideas and treasures of both Western and Chinese cultures.31. How was China able to keep the secret of silk production?A. It refused to sell its silk to other countries.B. Foreigners were not permitted to enter China.C. The word “huh?” is in worldwide use, a study found.Researchers discovered that languages spoken in countries from Ghana and Laos to Iceland and Italy all include “huh?”, or something that sounds very like it. They said that while the studymay sound silly, the word is an absolutely necessary part of speech. Without it and similar words, it would be impossible to show that we haven’t heard or understood what had been said and this would lead to constant misunderstandings. But while other words used in the same context, such as “sorry” or “what”, vary widely across languages, “huh?” remains unchanged. The Dutch researchers carefully studied ten languages from around the world, including Siwu, which is spoken in Ghana, and an Australian Aboriginal language, as well as Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Mandarin Chinese. They analysed tapes of recorded conversations for words that sounded like “huh?” and were used to request that whatever had just been said be repeated. All contained a version of “huh?”. The word was also found in another 21 languages. While there were subtle differences in each country, all sounded basically the same. This is surprising because normally unrelated languages will use very different words to describe the same thing. For instance, the Japanese for “dog” is “inu”, while the French is “chien”. It is thought that l anguages around the world have developed their own version of “huh?” because the sound is quick and simple to form, as well as being easily understood. The researchers, said that it might seem unimportant to carry out scientific research into a word like “huh?” but in fact this little word is an essential tool in human communication. They also have an answer for those who claim that “huh?” isn’t a word. They say that it qualifies because of the small differences in its pronunciation in different languages. It also can be considered a word because it’s something we learn to say, rather than a grunt or cry that we are born knowing how to make.36. Guest blogger Krista Fairles takes an amusing look at this very topic:The holidays are a wonderful, cheerful time whenmost people wait for Santa to bring them presents. But I’mnot like most people. I spend my time wondering just whatthe environmental impacts of Santa Claus and his reindeerare, and more importantly, how I can calculate thoseimpacts.Lately I’ve been particularly curious as to whetherSanta’s old sled is a clean green flying machine, or if heshould be replacing his 8 reindeer with an environmentally-friendly car.I should mention that, surprisingly, I was unable to find statistics specific to Santa’s magical flying reindeer, so these calculations use numbers from various sources and may not represent actual pollution caused by Santa and his animals. In other words, don’t complain to the government about the damage Santa is causing the environment based on this article.Santa’s yearly trip around the globe is 44,000km long, twice the average of a North American driver. If we assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip, then reindeer power only needs to push Santa’s sled forward. To complete the trip in 12 hours, I estimate they must travel at a speed of about 3100km/h. To travel at this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible 980 million calories each!!So the next question is: how much food is in 980 million calories? Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to eat 16,500 lbs each — or 1.6 acres of food. Growing 12.8 acres of corn has its own impl ications for the environment that we’ll leave for another calculation. We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are “letting out” some of that corn in the form of methane (甲烷,沼气). A resting cow produces 110 kg of methane per year, so flying reindeer would each let out about 4.8 tons. With methane causing 20 times the global warming damage of CO2, and the altitude increasing that damage by 1000% that another 20 times, we can put Santa’s round-trip emissions at 15,488 tons. This is much more than the 100 tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!Bad Santa.41. Which aspect does the writer NOT include in her analyses about reindeer’s influence onenvironment?A. Distance covered.B. Calories consumed.C. Tons of waste let out.D. Money spent on food.42. According to Paragraph 6, how many acres of corn would Santa need to feed 10 reindeer?A. 1.6.B. 16.C. 12.8.D. 128.43. Which of the following statements would the writer most probably agree with?A. Christmas celebrations are really a waste of money.B. Vegetarians are more likely to survive than meat-eaters.C. Raising animals has a negative influence on environment.D. The car industry does less harm to environment than farming.44. Which of the following words best describes the language style of the passage?A. Humourous and concerned.B. Cheerful and friendly.C. Academic and formal.D. Serious and boring.45. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. Is Santa driving clean and green?B. Santa, watch where you’re going!C.
