St. Valentine’s StoryValentine was a priest living in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. He wanted to have a big army and expected men to volunteer to join. However many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. This made Claudius very angry. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius banned marriage even engagement from his empire. But Valentine would keep on performing marriage ceremonies secretly. He was caught by the soldiers at a wedding, and was thrown into prison and beheaded.Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his jailer when he was in prison. Before he was taken to his death on February 14, 269 A.D., he signed a farewell message to her, “Love from your Valentine.” That note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Da y.Questions and Answers1. IV. Chinese Translation of Paragraphs1.

1. In terms of organization, the article clearly falls into three main parts:
Paragraphs 1-3 Main idea The first part introduces the problem with poetry and the significance of the writer’s solution. The second part introduces in detail how people can create a poem of their own. The third part serves as the ending of the essay. In this part, the writer reiterates his intention and makes it clear he is just joking by presenting such a method of creating a poem.

Modern life is more about material and tangible goods than about spirit pursuit. We set clear targets for our future, neglecting that we are gradually losing one joy that human kind usually have: the fun of spontaneity. The writer of this essay reminds us that poetry, especially creating poems, can provide us such pleasure. Though the writer of this essay writes in a half-mocking tone, and the method he introduces will not ensure us to create a wonderful, or even presentable poem, his real purpose is to make the creation of a poem less difficult than we may imagine and to induce amateurs to set their first steps on their journey to a more aesthetic life.

Unit 6 Sports Hero
Jordan’s father was murdered during a robbery in 1993, and this tragic event partially led to Jordan’s temporary retirement from basketball that same year. He tried baseball, which he stuck with until 1995 when he returned to the NBA. He played a part in the movie “Space Jam” during the off season of his first year back in the NBA.
In 1984, he left UNC after his junior year to play in the NBA when the Chicago Bulls drafted him. He was the third pick of the first round. In 1985, he was named rookie of the year. In 1991 Michael Jordan won his first of six NBA championships. The next year he won a gold medal in the Barcelona Olympics. During the off season, he returned to UNC to finish his Bachelor of Arts degree.
Unit 6 Sports Hero
Michael Jordan is my hero for many reasons. He was a great basketball player. In his busy schedule, he always found time to give back. He was not greedy with his money. He always worked hard at everything that he did. He was very determined and never gave up. He always found a way to triumph in any situation. He always found time to spend with his family. All of these things make him one of the greatest heroes of all time.

American educators fear that unless creativity has been acquired early, it may never emerge; on the other hand, skills can be picked up later. However, I do not want to overstate my case. There is enormous creativity to be found in Chinese scientific, technological and artistic innovations past and present. And there is a danger of exaggerating creative breakthroughs in the West. When any innovation is examined closely, its reliance on previous achievements is all too apparent the "standing on the shoulders of giants" phenomenon. But assuming that the contrast I have developed is valid, and that the fostering of skills and creativity are both worthwhile goals, the important question becomes this: Can we gather, from the Chinese and American extremes, a superior way to approach education, perhaps striking a better balance between the poles of creativity and basic skills然而,假定我这里所说的反差是成立的,而培养技艺与创造力两者都是值得追求的目标,那么重要的问题就在于:我们能否从中美两个极端中寻求一种更好的教育方式,它或许能在创造力与基本技能这两极之间获得某种较好的平衡UNIT 21. 转折点 a turning point16. 归属感 a sense of belonging19. 遭遇困难go through a rough time20. 感恩be thankful for22. 创作才能the gift of creativity24. 对物质财富的追求the pursuit of possessionsYet I feel nothing more than a passing whim to attain the material things so many other people have. A systematic study revealed that many modern languages descended from a common parent language, lost to us because nothing was written down. Identifying similar words, linguists have come up with what they call an Indo-European parent language, spoken until 3500 to 2000 B.C. These people had common words for snow, bee and wolf but no word for sea. So some scholars assume they lived somewhere in north-central Europe, where it was cold. Traveling east, some established the languages of India and Pakistan, andothers drifted west toward the gentler climates of Europe. Some who made the earliest move westward became known as the Celts, whom Caesar's armies found in Britain. New words came with the Germanic tribes -- the Angles, the Saxons, etc. -- that slipped across the North Sea to settle in Britain in the 5th century. The town lay in the midst of a checkerboard of prosperous farms, with fields of grain and hillsides of orchards where, in spring, white clouds of bloom drifted above the green fields. In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a backdrop of pines. Then foxes barked in the hills and deer silently crossed the fields, half hidden in the mists of the fall mornings. Along the roads, laurel, viburnum and alder, great ferns and wildflowers delighted the traveler's eye through much of the year. Even in winter the roadsides were places of beauty, where countless birds came to feed on theberries and on the seed heads of the dried weeds rising above the snow. The countryside was, in fact, famous for the abundance and variety of its bird life, and when the flood of migrants was pouring through in spring and fall people traveled from great distances to observe them. Others came to fish the streams, which flowed clear and cold out of the hills and contained shady pools where trout lay. So it had been from the days many years ago when the first settlers raised their houses, sank their wells, and built their barns.

TranslationWhen I was young I developed a keen interest in animals. So I often visited the zoo in my home town. There what attracted me most was a couple of tigers, especially the male. They were kept in a huge iron cage at first, but later was released from it and put in a place called Tiger Hill. The hill was separated from the visitors by a very wide and deep ditch. What's more, it was also surrounded by a high iron fence along the ditch.Twenty years later, I revisited the zoo and was relieved to find the Tiger Hill was still there but greatly extended. Moving around now were six tigers, old and young, instead of two!Part III Text BComprehension Checkl. b 2. d 3.d 4. b 5. c 6. aLanguage Practice1. purchase2. took to3. display4. rejected5. shed light on6. magnificent7. typical8.

IV. Chines‎e Transl‎a tion of Paragr‎a phs1.
