Prep School
A university-preparatory school or collegepreparatory school is a secondary school, usually private, designed to prepare students for higher education. Some schools will also include a junior or elementary school. Prep schools are selective, academically challenging, and largely independent of state and local control. The student-to-teacher ratio is comparatively low, hence, smaller class sizes than in public schools. Some admit students of only one sex; others are co-educational. Prep schools often place a strong emphasis on sports.
Theme
The film is about a new Welton-teacher, Mr. Keating, who inspires his students, at the age of 16-17, with poems and encourages them to seize the day (put as little trust as possible in the future). We can divide the main story about a gang of boys and their teacher into three separate stories. Firstly, and most obviously, Neil Perry suddenly realizes that he doesn‟t want to spend his life obeying his father. Secondly, the untraditional English-teacher John Keating encourages students to be independent. Thirdly we follow Todd Anderson. These three stories are mainly just different aspects of the main theme: Seize the day.

f Neil's parents, the headmaster launches an investigation. Cameron meets the school governors and board of regents. Later, confronted by Charlie, Cameron admits that he squealed on them and made Keating the scapegoat, and urges the rest of them to let Keating take the fall. Charlie punches Cameron and is later expelled. Todd is called to Nolan's office, where his parents are waiting. Nolan forces Todd to admit to being a member of the Dead Poets Society, and makes him sign a document blaming Keating for abusing his authority, inciting the boys to restart the club, and encouraging Neil to flout his father's wishes. Todd sees the other boys' signatures already on the document, and is threatened by his father to sign it. Keating is subsequently fired. The boys return to English class, now being taught by Nolan, who instructs the boys to read the introductory essay only to find that they had all ripped it out. Keating enters the room to retrieve a few belongings. Todd reveals that the boys were intimidated into signing the denunciation. Nolan orders Todd to be quiet and demands that Keating leave. As Keating is about to exit, Todd for the first time breaks his reserve, calls out "O Captain! My Captain!" and stands on his desk. Nolan warns Todd to sit down or face expulsion. Much of the class, including Knox, Meeks, and Pitts, climb onto their desks and look to Keating, ignoring Nolan's orders until he gives up. Keating, visibly touched, thanks the boys and leaves.

Social Background
Dead Poets Society was shot in 1989, an economically depressed period of America after
the collapse (崩溃)of the stock market of 1987. It was also the time the atmosphere of Cold War was going to melt. So the theme “seize the day (carpe diem)” is quite understandable. The story in the movie happened in 1959. The McCarthyism (麦卡锡主义)which was popular in the 1950s was coming to an end, and the individualism was drawing near in the 1960s. Therefore the shooting time and the time of the story had similar social needs: a spiritual release.

In Whitman's poetry, President Lincoln, who was assassinated on the eve of victory, is compared to the captain who led everyone through the waves but ultimately collapsed on the deck. President Lincoln was assassinated shortly after the abolition of slavery, while Teacher Keating led his students to pursue spiritual freedom and challenge the conservative education system. As soon as he achieved some results, he was ordered to be laid off. His situation was similar to that of President Lincoln: he rode the wind and waves, but ultimately paid the price.

The historical background of the Movie
The story in this movie happened in 1959, it’s the time of cold war. Mccarthyism had just been eliminated. But the conservatism still prevailed in the U.S.A. At that time, the traditionist and the Iibertarian had a fierce battle. The traditionist thought that there should not have the radical revolution. They emphasize on the importance of experiences and historical tradition. In their mind, only the old tradition which have been tested so many times can be accept.
Walt Whiteman
In the movie, the name Walt Whiteman was mentioned several times. The must famous words in this movie ——Oh captain, my captain”——was his poem. Uncle Walt, this is what Mr.Keating call the great Walt Whiteman.
The historical background of the film shooting time
The movie was shot in 1989, 2 years after the stock market crash happened in 1987 the U.S.A. People during this time prefer to have a carpe diem time. It may be the reason why Mr.keating said seizing the day. It was a hard time and people want some breakthrough. And this may be the sprit want to show in this movie.

The inspiration of the Dead Poets Society
The inspiration of this movie comes from James Hilton’s novel good bye Mr. Chips It’s a real story of Thomas Schumann, the script writer of this movie, when he studied in the preparatory school Montgomery Bell. His English teacher Samuel is the prototype of Mr. Keating.
The literature background of the movie
The beat generation still existed in the 1950s, it’s a new schools of literature. During that time most writers intentionally avoided the political and social problems. They just boost the political system blindly. The new generation can not bear the sight of this. So they began to challenge the old tradition.
But in the libertarian’s mind, the real freedom means you can pursue what you want. They didn’t want become the slave of the tradition. They prefer the social darwinism, the survival of the fittest, old can not always be the right.
