I waited patiently for my father to enter the passwords to access his computer. He was unaware that they were ready to be recorded by a hidden camera I placed in his office. This was the only way could I play computer games freely and I did it. That instant in my childhood is only a snippet of my consistently growing interest in everything electronic. My passion for electronics has fueled my academic career and I now feel fully prepared to pursue a master’s program in electrical engineering, more specifically geared towards multimedia.With both my parents working at teachers, I had the opportunity to pursue an education and had access to a television, computer and camera at an early age. I was always fascinated by the beautiful scenery and dazzling special effects presented by those media. Upon entering junior high school, I found that I could do so much more than just play video games to experience the amazing image effects.I began to teach myself how to use Adobe Photoshop. My most memorable and proudest achievement at the time, was when I carefully post-processed over fifty graduation photos via Photoshop, receiving many compliments from classmates and teachers. My hobby flourished through high school and as did my efforts to master Adobe After Effects. I did not have a clear idea of a future career when I entered Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT). I only knew that BUPT was built as part of a “211”National Project to emphasize a greatacademic strength in telecommunication. My childhood experiences created the foundation of my research interest while my undergraduate education provided me most the tools and capabilities to chase my dream.I chose to specialize in multimedia during my junior year at BUPT, which was a subdivision of my undergraduate program. My interest accumulated through my coursework. While taking an Interactive Media Design and Production class, I was tasked to design a Flash program introducing Chinese culture to my classmates. To do this I designed a Flash animation incorporating Chinese cuisine and a user-friendly cooking game. Experiencing the collection, selection, process and programming of the raw materials like images and sound, I was further fascinated by multimedia. When my courses became more advanced, I enjoyed studying 3D Graphics Programming Tools.From this course I not only learned computer graphics and programming skills, but how to apply them when designing a 3D rhinoceros beetle. I was so absorbed by my work that I spent countless hours of free time and missed a handful of meals while programming and refining the details of the bug. I had such a great time designing the beetle that I would barely notice time passing when working on it. Now, I am enthusiastically studying Multimedia Systems and Image and Video Processing which deepened my interest in the field. These two courses not only taught me more about multimedia but also strengthened my capabilities of processing it, such as Up-sampling, Edge Detectionand Block Matching Algorithm. Overall, these courses have been invaluable, as they have equipped me with theoretical knowledge and practical skills.Although my coursework seemed to provide me with a “toolbox”, I was eager to acquire a higher level of practical skills derived from completing large projects. I decided to participate in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) in 2012 and 2013, to apply my knowledge to solve realistic problems. During the 2013 MCM, I succeeded in designing the mathematical models necessary to analyze the water shortage problem in China, and provided a reasonable strategy to solve the problem. In charged of modeling and the Matlab programming, I did both quantitative and qualitative analysis of the water storage, reuse, transfer and desalinization, to better understand the water crisis. My analysis results and the comparison of China’s geographical differences were recognized by the Contest as I was designated as Meritorious Winner equivalent to ranking in top 15% of the competition. This experience propelled me to seek even larger projects to which I could make contributions. During the summer of 2013, I had the opportunity to intern at Tsinghua University. The project involved the creation of a medical multimedia-terminal used to evaluate the health status of users. It was my first time interning in a group of over thirty people involved in a single project. I immediately felt the challenge laid out in front of me. My job was to design a program to achieve the methods of evaluation for the terminal. Similar to mathematical modeling, this task required much effort in acquiring new knowledge andtechniques. One important mission was to learn the process of a Health Risk Appraisal (HRA), including diversified medical models of different diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Another was to master advanced Java programming so that I could design a Web Service to be built on cloud platforms. It took me three months to complete the program, but I felt so satisfied with my interdisciplinary work and being able to contribute to solving another real-world problem. During those months I strengthened my analytical abilities, delved deeper into the world of engineering and added more practical skills to my ”toolbox”.My experiences not only enhanced my practical capabilities, but also confirmed my passion for electrical engineering. I have a strong willingness to turn what I have learned into a product or solution that can be beneficial to society. Multimedia technology has been applied to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), simulations, medicine, bioengineering and many other fields. I believe that multimedia tech is becoming increasingly instrumental and important to many scientific fields presently lacking the capabilities of profiting from multimedia. Even one decade later, I can still recall the first experiment I did in the physics course. When a transmitter in one corner of the lab was connected with electricity, a little bulb connected to a reception antenna in another corner lit up. Though by no means dazzling in itself, this light with its stunning magic ushered me as if into a wonderland, a world replete with intriguing mysteries that only belong to the realm of physics. I believed that I belonged to this special world. That marked the turning point in my life and with it I commenced my quests for answers capable of unraveling those mysteries.With an unusually solid foundation in physics laid during senior middle school (I received straight A’s in virtually every physics exam), I entered the Physics Department of Dalian Marine University. By the time I graduated in four years, which could only be described as transitory, I found that I had become emotionally attached to this discipline. Realizing that undergraduate studies had only exposed me to the relatively fundamental knowledge of this subject, I embarked on a Master’s program, through very competitive entrance examinations, in fiber-optical communication at the College of Telecommunication Engineering, the University of Beijing Posts and Telecommunications (UBPT).The moment I came into contact with this brand-new field represented by telecommunications(China tends to lag behind western countries in scientific and technological develop in any given field by many years or even decades), I was filled with excitement over the wonderful prospect that this industry could enjoy. I yearned to be satiated with new concepts, new knowledge, and new expertise and I devoted myself to my program with indefatigable efforts. To my regret, after completing our share of research responsibilities in the 863 Project under the direction of my supervisor, we had no further opportunities to participate in any meaningful projects. I had no alternative but to duplicate the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror and its Applications in OTDM System which had already been completed by scientists abroad and to verify their research findings by means of computer simulations. It was precisely those backward research conditions and the lack of challenging projects that prompted me to generate the idea of seeking further studies abroad. I believed that the status quo would impose serious restrictions on the development of my intellectual capacities and on the exploitation of my academic potential.But for two years before I could bring my overseas studies into a reality, I worked at the leading enterprise in the country’s telecommunications industry—China Telecom Beijing Branch Company. As broadband networks engineer and as technical support engineer, I was responsible for the design and operation of four major projects—Construction of Broadband Integrate Services Experimental Network, Experiment and Construction of Broadband DSL Network in Beijing, Test of Timing Clock of Beijing SDH Networks and Equipment Selection for Beijing CDMA Wireless Network. My distinguished work performance resultedin my being sent to Marconi Company’s American h eadquarters to receive professional trainings in ATM technology. Nevertheless, I still felt that in a company environment work was routinized and technology lacked innovativeness, falling far short of my passions and ambitions. The work was meaningful only to the extent of serving as a means of livelihood. Refusing to be mired in a mediocre condition, I decided that the time had come for me to pursue research work that I had always loved.Relying on my solid foundation in physics, my well-trained experimental skills and hands-on abilities that I developed over the heretofore studies and work, I succeeded in entering the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). In the superior laboratory conditions, for the first time in my life I had a proud feeling of being involved in real scientific research. When I see how my inspirations turn into reality in the laboratory, once again for the first time in my life I feel that I am creating a kind of wealth far more precious and valuable than money –knowledge. I realized that I had made an absolutely correct decision to come to the United States. At the Center of Nanostructure Materials and Quantum Device Fabrication and Electro Optical Research Center, I have done two years coursework and one year and half lab research. They have significantly enhanced my ability to solve research problems independently. Since last year, I have conducted extensive experiments in the field of nanotechnology and Semiconductor and optoelectronic elements. Although the approaches and solutions I generate during those experiments frequently differ from those of my supervisor’s in many important aspects, I have merited positive comments from him. I am fully confident that by the end of this year my research efforts would come into full fruition.Nevertheless, I still feel discontented. In retrospect, I developed a commitment to scientific research very early and have persevered under the spirit of this commitment. The class selects only 90 students out of more than 1000 child prodigies across China each year. (Jilin University is a prestigious university of general education with 20 departments and a regular annual enrollment of 1,500 students) I studied at Electrical Engineering (E. E) Department, a highly selective department with a gathering of smart students who are hard to compete with.Four years of undergraduate studies had me well trained in a wide range of disciplines, and my outstanding academic performance encouraged me to pursue an advanced degree. After learning the background, application, principle, and advantage of CDMA, I selected the signaling design of the CDMA Base Station Interface as my research topic. I evaluated and studied the protocols IS-95, IS-634 and the ULTRA interface protocols of Lucent. Applying software engineering method and Oriented-Object approach, I designed the internal interface of Base Station System between BSC and BTS-Abis interface, which is one of the most important parts of such a large and sophisticated project. Then referring to protocols LAPD/LAPF, integrating the latest knowledge and using one step. By working on this project, I learned more about CDMA, GSM and other mobile communications systems. Later I felt so proud to hear what I had done was downloaded to the board and the design ran flawlessly.Working ExperienceAfter I obtained my MA degree in engineering in 1997, I was employed by a telecommunication branch company of Posts & Telecommunications Industry Company. I participated in the JSU18 switching System Project, which is planned to produce the sixth largest switching system inChina's own switching systems. I was in charge of the No.7 signaling section and developed the trunk communication system. Referring to protocol Q. 764, etc, I designed the TUP (Telephone User Part) & ISUP (ISDN User Part) - the most important part of a switching system-with C++ Language. By now, I have finished the software flow of CPC (call process) of these two parts. Through programming, downloading the procedure into the real switching system, debugging and testing, I came to deeply understand the call process of the large switching system and the relationship between all the modules of a large switching system. The procedure that I completed is so good that we can call successfully through it.In working on these two projects, I cultivated diligent work habits, independent research ability and team spirit. I feel I have the potential for further further academic growth and am ready to take up the challenge of advanced studies in my chosen field.From August 1998, I joined Software center Motorola, China and got involved in the CDMA project. We must communicate with international customers on a frequent basis in English environment. So I not only learned about the excellent software development process and various branches of advanced knowledge, but also improved my English ability. Here, we often exchange our findings at presentations given by others and myself in English. I get a lot of technical and non - technical training, in such subjects as Software Product Process, CDMA ( Code Division Multiple Access), GSM, GPRS ( General Packet Radio Service - the third generation system of GSM), TTCN ( Tree and Tabular Combined Notation - a test language), ITEX ( Interactive TTCN Editor and executor - a test tool for the TTCN language), and even English language.Purpose of StudyI learn greedily, but the more I am trained, the more deeply I realize what I learned earlier is not enough. I have not got a chance to lead a major project, although I have been moving on a smooth career path and always finished my part of every project immaculately. As a female engineer, I must learn more to compete with most male engineers to lead a major project. And in spite of all my achievements, I feel that I have not brought my intellectual capabilities into full play.
