So, Why Don't You Tell Me About Yourself?
Follow the four easy steps outlined below to ensure your response will grab the interviewers attention.
1. Provide a brief introduction. Introduce attributes that are key to the open position. Sample
introduction: During my 10 years' of experience as a sales manager, I have mastered the ability to coach, train, and motivate sales teams into reaching corporate goals.
So, Why Don't You Tell Me About Yourself?
3.
Tie your response to the needs of the hiring organization. Don't assume that the interviewer will be able to connect all the dots. It is your job as the interviewee to make sure the interviewer understands how your experiences are transferable to the position they are seeking to fill. Sample tie-in: Because of my proven experience in leading sales teams, Craig Brown suggested I contact you regarding your need for a sales manager. Craig filled me in on the challenges your sales department is facing. Ask an insightful question. By asking a question you gain control of the interview. Don't ask a question for the sake of asking. Be sure that the question will engage the interviewer in a conversation. Doing so will alleviate the stress you may feel to perform. Sample question: What strategies are currently underway to increase sales and morale within the sales department? There you have it - a response that meets the needs of the interviewer AND supports your agenda. When broken down into manageable pieces, the question, "So, tell me about yourself?" isn't overwhelming. In fact, answering the question effectively gives you the opportunity to talk about your strengths, achievements, and qualifications for the position. So take this golden opportunity and run with it! - Linda Matias,

We’ll keep you informed of the result of the interviews sometime next week. Thank you for coming. Good – bye, Miss Zhang.B: Good – bye..Section2 Preparing an InterviewThe first thing to remember when you go for a job interview is that this is not a one-sided affair. You can treat it in thesame way that you treat a negotiation. After all, both you and the prospective employer are selling something. If you approach an interview with th e attitude “any job will do”, the interviewer will realize that immediately. If the job is worth anything, you won’t get it.You should prepare yourself for an interview just as you would do for a negotiation. Find out as much as you can about the company and the person who is to interview you. Don’t be caught unawares. Go to the internet and look at the company’s website. Compare it with that of its competitors. Alternatively, look at the Yellow Pages or trade magazines to see how they advertise themselves. Make enquiries at the Chamber of Commerce and other relevant organizations. Find out at least a little about the sector so that you can ask interesting questions.Think of and note down your strengths and the opportunities that lie ahead. No matter how high unemployment is, regardless of how miserable you are in your current job, it’s always an advantage to see things in a positive light. If you have little or no experience in a particular area, consider your capabilities in a similar area. Spend some time trying to imagine what type of employee the company is looking for and what makes you suitable for the job being advertised.First impressions count, so look good and feel good before you go. Choose clothes that make you feel confident. Find out what clothes may put the interviewer off. Ensure you arrive at the interview with time to spare. According to more than one recruitment agency we spoke to, interviewees must understand the importance not only of their personal appearance but alsoof their body language. During the interview breathe calmly and try not to appear too nervous. Look the interviewer in the eye and adopt similar body language to theirs. Smile and feel relaxed, enthusiastic and assertive. Remember one thing, though, assertive does not mean aggressive.Don’t just answer “yes” or “no” to questions. Treat every question as an opportunity to demonstrate that you are suitable for the job, but remember to stick to the point. When asked about your interests, include group as well as individual activities. Be on the lookout for tricky questions about your personal life. You don’t need to lie; just sell yourself in the best light. This is something the interviewer needs to be able to do as well. You have the right to find out whether or not you want to work for the company. Furthermore, your interest in the nature of the company and how it is run may well end up being your big selling point.Section 3 Writing a Letter of Application and ResumeA: Hey, here is an advertisement for the position of Personnel Assistant. I want to try it through a job application letter and my resume Do you know how to sell my qualifications to the company effectively?B: According to what I know, in such a letter, you should present the organization your interests in and qualifications for the position, while in your resume you should introduce the main points of them.A: Then how should I arrange it in the concrete form.B: In the opening paragraph, you should state sincerely the reason for your letter, identify the particular position you’re applying for, and you may also indicate how you learned about the company. The opening should be short, and truthful. A: I know, that is to attract the reader’s attention. How about the body part?B: This part is the most important part, you can have one or two paragraphs to highlight your strongest qualifications and relate them directly to the needs of the position you are applying for. And the secret to move the reader is to provide specific and credible information about yourself to support your statements.A: I see. Then what’s the use of the ending?B: Though this part is usually short, it is absolutely necessary. In it, you should ask for a personal interview politely and provide your phone number, your address or e-mail for the reader. And remember to indicate the time available.A: Ok, I’ve got it. Now, how about a resume?B: Well, a resume is always included with the job application letter. It should serve as a brief record of your personal qualifications and experience, including education and working experience.A: Should I make it in details or …B: Actually no. Typically, the readers only spend a very short time reading each resume and select some to study in more detail. So a successful resume should be very concise but complete, and usually no longer than one page for the entry-level positions.A: Then what should be necessarily there?B: The following information is generally believed to be essential in resume:●Name, address, and telephone number●Job objective●Major, degree, name of your school, and date of graduation.●Special aptitudes and skills●Jobs held, employing company, date of employment and job duty(if you have)A: Can you explain a bit about the “job objective”?B: Ok, it is simply what job or position you are looking for. A: I hope I can do a good job before I get the job.B: By the way, here are some samples for you to refer to.A: How thoughtful you are. Thanks.B: this is the application letter.Dear Mrs. Swan:I know from different media and my friends that youare a company specialized in evening dress for more than ten years and have a good commercial reputation. Your advertisement in BEIJING DAILY of December 12th stating that you are looking for “an executive secretary” has aroused my great interest.I will graduate from Beihua University in June andI believe that the skills I attained and the knowledgeI gained will enable me to be an efficient secretary inyour company. In that respect, the job has not changed. As The Oxford English Dictionary says, a secretary is one who is entrusted with private or secret matters and one who is employed to conduct correspondence, to keep records, and usually to transact various other businesses, for another person or for a society, corporation, or public body. While American Professional Secretaries International (APSI)defines a secretary as an executive assistant who possesses a mastery of office skills, demonstrates the ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, exercises initiative and judgment, and makes decisions within the scope of assigned authority. Accordingly, a secretary employed usually does almosteverything in the office as follows: typing, keyboarding;transcribing; processing mail; telephoning; schedulingappointments; greeting visitors; composing and editingdocuments; researching and coordinating meetings, conferences, and teleconferences; making travel arrangements; handlingreprographics; and organizing time and work, etc. These form thedaily office routine for a secretary. In the modern society thesecretary is an important member of the management team, responsible not only for carrying out the executive’s wishesbut also for helping to maintain a well-organized and efficientoffice. In other words, a secretary entering the work force isto face a lot of possible job situations. Therefore only thosewho have received specialized professional training will besurvivals in a world where the methods of handling informationare complex.Technically, according to the survey by APSI in 1981, thetitles of secretaries can be classified into the five kinds:Administrative Assistant, Administrative secretary, ExecutiveSecretary, Secretary, and Secretary-Receptionist Each of themhas his or her respective techniques and qualifications but theyall have to have: secretarial skills, organizational ability, administrative ability, good communication skills, self-starterand the like before they serve as a professional secretary.译⽂第⼀部分A: 请进,我是⼈事经理楚天舒。

Mr. James.Section 2 Telephoning EffectivelyOn the phone the image of a company relies heavily on the speaker’s speaking skills. The customer’s impression of the company is determined completely by the speaker’s voice and choice of words. Telephoning skill is not a natural talent but a learned skill. Here are some tips to help a secretary make better communications through the telephone.Speak clearly and more slowly than usual. Be particularly clear when saying one’s name and the name of one’s organization, and take the chance to repeat them, particularly at the end of the call.Speak with more energy. Telephones tend to make one’s voice sound less lively as it really is, so try to give increased interest in and enthusiasm for what the secretary is saying. When necessary ‘smile with one’s voice’. A smile on one’s face is reflected in one’s voice, and will help the secretary avoid speaking in the same tone all the time.Be and sound polite, professional, understanding, helpful, and friendly. Much of the secret is simply good manners and attention. Be a good listener.Explain things in an understandable way. Don’t use special terms or assume that a customer knows the business or industry. The secretary should speak without accent to make the communication easier.Make it easy to be contacted. Customers shouldn’t have to talk to half a dozen people before they can find one who can help. They shouldn’t be given another number or told to call back later. Usually they should betransferred through to the right person, or if that’s impossible, th e right person should call them back.Respond promptly to phone calls. Prompt response will give a customer the impression that one’s company is very efficient. And if the secretary promises to call back, he or she should do this as soon as possible.Know how to use all the buttons on the phone, and in particular how to transfer a call without losing it. Simple things like these make all the difference when dealing with people over the phone.Section 3 Writing a Letter of CongratulationA: In today’s recruitment examination for secretary, we are required to write a letter to introduce a new employee to the company’s business associate. But I don’t think I’ve done a good job.B: Why not? A letter of introduction is not very difficult to write because the purpose of such a letter is only to introduce one person to another. It is not a reference letter to present a person's qualifications, so an introductory letter must be written to the point.A: What should be included in it?B: Three points are necessary for it. One is to provide the full name of the person being introduced. Second is to give an explanation for the purpose and reason of the introduction. Third is to make a very brief description of the person being introduced. Some letters may have a forth part to express the writer’s appreciation.A: Is there anything to pay special attention to?B: Well, maybe, when you describe the person being introduced, try to make him or her sound interesting rather than overdo the compliment. A: Ok, I see. Thank you very muchExample of letter of introductionDear Mr. Huxley,It’s our great pleasure to introduce to you Bob Sherman, our new sales manager, who became our colleague in August.Bob has a wealth of background in ceramic industries, including both manufacturing process and international trade practice. Not many people have such complete experience with the toys they are selling. We are delighted with Bob’s resourcefulness and we know you will soon find him helpful to your business.Best regards,Henry CollinsSection 4 Getting to Know Diplomacy (1)A: Do you know how diplomacy is defined?B:I can only tell you what the Oxford Dictionary says about it. It says, “Diplomacy is the management of international relations by negotiation; the method by which these relations are adjusted and managed by ambassadors and envoys.”A:I think this definition covers the nature and the content of diplomacy. In short, the substance of diplomacy is to adjust the relationship between states through negotiations which are mainly carried out by diplomats. .B: The word “diplomacy” comes from the ancient Greek word “diploma” which means a folded document used for identification and request for favour or privilege.A:What’s a diplomat? What do they usuall y do?B: A diplomat is a person who represents his/ her country in dealing with another country. They usually execute the foreign policies of the states they represent and learn the situation, external or internal, in the countries they are appointed to and serve as the eyes and ears of their governments in other countries.A: How about the origin of diplomacy? Anything you know about it?B: Well, diplomatic activities are found in all civilizations such as Chinese, Indian, Egyptian civilizations. Take China for example. During the period of the Warring States (beginning about the middle of the fifth century B.C.), a political and military alliance against the Kingdom of Qin known in history as “the Vertical Alliance” was formed by the Kingdoms of Qi, Chu,Yan, Han, Zhao and Wei. And a counter alliance, known as “the Horizontal Alliance”, was organized by Qin and its followers.A: In this sense, I think the Chibi Battle is another example of an ancient diplomatic activity. ZhuGe-liang was sent as the special envoy of Shu State to the Kingdom of Wu to effect a military alliance against Wei State which, as a result, suffered a crushing defeat in the battle, and this laid the groundwork for the situation of tripartite rivalry.B: You are absolutely right. These can be seen as some earliest forms of modern diplomacy and from them we can see how diplomacy has been done till now.A:Oh, there goes the bell. Let’s go to class.B: Yes, let’s.译文:秘书怎样接打电话第一部分对话1下午好,这是皇家宾馆吗?是的,夫人,可帮您做什么?我是东方贸易公司的,想为凌云先生订房。
