题型:paraphrase,translation,devices, novel reading ……

Paraphrase:

1 ……where xenophobia and economic ambition have often struggled for the upper hand……A: In China, the two trends of closed door and open-door policies have long been struggling for dominance.

2 Those people out there should continue to live in a museum while we will have showers that work.

A: The Chinese people should continue to live a backward life while we live comfortably with all modern conveniences.

3 You don’t have to be cool to do it; you just have to have the eye.

A: You don’t have to be fashionable yourself, but rather you just have to be aware of it.

4 Early on I realized that I was going to need some type of compass to guide me through the wilds of global culture.

A: At the very beginning I knew I needed some guidance to help me understand the different cultures in the world.

5 The penitence may have been Jewish, but the aspiration was universal.

A: The confessional mentality might be special only to the Jews, but the desire of asking for forgiveness from God is shared by all the people.

6 It took me a long time and much painful boomeranging of my expectation to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with: That I am nobody but myself.

A: It took me a long time to get rid of illusions and realize the simple and apparent truth that I am nobody but myself. It was a painful process. I started with high expectations only to be deeply disappointed and thoroughly disillusioned.

7 And yet I am on freak of nature, nor of history. I was in the cards, other things having been equal (or unequal) eighty-five years ago.

A: (I am an invisible man.) And yet I am physically normal as a human being, and at the same time I am a natural product of history. When things seemed likely to happen to me, or when I was fated to be the man as described in the novel, other things had been equal (or unequal) eighty-five years ago.

8 In those pre-invisible days I visualized myself as a potential Booker T. Washington.

A: In those days before I realized I was an invisible man, I imagined that I would become a successful man like Booker T. Washington.

9 Should I try to win against the voice out there? Would not this go against my speech, and was not this a moment for humility, for nonresistance?

A: If I should try my best and win the fight, I would be winning against the bet of the white man, who shouted “I got my money on the big boy.” In that case I would not behave with humility, and yet my speech advocated humility as the essence of success. So maybe I should let the big boy win without putting up resistance, for this was time for me to show humility.

10 “Cast down your bucket where you are”-cast it down in making friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded……

A: Make full use of what you have and do the best you can. Take this attitude in making friends in every honorable way, making friends with people of different races among whom we live.

11 But warfare for the Kiowas was preeminently a matter of disposition rather than of survival, and they never understood the grim, unrelenting advance of the U.S. Cavalry.
