换句话说，诗有诗的意境，词有词的意境，有的时候诗能表达的，不一定能在词里表达出来，同样的，有时在词里所能表达的，不一定能在诗里表达出来。
比较而言，是“诗之境阔，词之言长”，诗里所写的内容、所传达的意境更为广阔、更为博大，而词所能传达的意思是“言长”，也就是说有余味，所谓“长”者就是说有耐人寻思的余味。
缪钺先生在《诗词散论·论词》中也曾说：“诗显而词隐，诗直而词婉，诗有时质言而词更多比兴。
