They keep the world of nature in balance. If a certain plant dies out some animals may become extinct, too, because they depend on the plant for food.Long ago, most animals and plants became extinct because of natural events, like earthquakes or volcano eruptions. Climatic changes also led to the disappearance of certain species. Today, plants and animals are in danger mostly because of humans. Some plants and animals can only live in certain areas. We call such a living place a habitat. If a habitat isdestroyed the species cannot find any more food or a place to live, sleep or have babies. So it dies out.Habitats can be destroyed in many ways. People need more space to live in. Therefore, they take away the natural home of plants and animals.Pollution can also kill off certain species. Acid rain from factories can poison fish there.Sometimes native animals become endangered when a new species appears. Foxes were brought to Australia to kill off rabbits, which were seen as a pest. But instead of killing rabbits, the foxes killed kangaroos and other animals.People have hurt plants and animals but they are also willing to help them survive. All over the world organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, the Rainforest Action Network and Friends of the Earth are helping to protect habitats. Whether we’re happy or sad, our furry friends seem to be there, either wagging their tails or staring at us. Well, new research indicates that dogs can tell the difference between happy and angry human facial expressions. However, whether or not they understand the emotions behind these faces is still up for debate. Researchers from the University of Vienna designed an experiment where eleven dogs were trained to associate either a happy or an angry face with a food reward. During this stage, each dog was shown only the upper half or lower half of the person’s face.In a later test, the scientists showed the dogs images, either of human faces they had not seen in their training, or of just half a human face. The dogs then had to, to the best of their ability, spot the difference.Surprisingly, the dogs are able to tell the difference between the happy and angry face more often than not, suggesting that they can associate positive and negative feelings with a smile or a frown."Our study demonstrates that dogs can distinguish angry and happy expressions in humans. They can tell that these two expressions have different meanings, and they can do this notonly for people they know well, but even for faces they have never seen before, "Ludwig Huber, senior author and head of the group at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna’s Messerli Rese arch Institute, said in a press release. This study isn’t the first to test whether dogs could tell between human emotional expressions, but it is the first to provide evidence of what we have always suspected.Huber and his colleagues believe their findings can be useful to pet owners when giving punishment orrewards, making sure not to let their faces give it away. But perhaps the message is to smile more, because you can’t fool a dog.61.From this passage, we can learn that dogs can .A.hardly read human emotionsB.never read human emotionsC.tell the difference between happy and angry human facial expressionsD.tell the difference between happy and angry human facial expressions only for people they know well62.The underlined word "distinguish" in the fifth paragraph could be replaced by " ".A.sayB. speakC. tellD. talk63.The aim of this experiment is .A.to train dogsB.to observe dogs’ facesC.to show the dogs human facesD.to find out whether dogs can understand human emotions64.The researchers designed an experiment .A.with twelve dogsB.with a food rewardC.with only the upper half of the person’s face shownD.with only the lower half of the person’s face shown65.According to Ludwig Huber and his colleagues’ finding, .A.you should not punish your dogB.you should not leave your dog aloneC.your dog can’t understand your emotionsD.you should not give away your secret when facing your dog第二部分非选择题(请用0.5 毫米黑色签字笔并严格按照题号顺序在答题卡上书写作答)Section B (15 points, 3 for each )Directions: In the section, you are required to read a passage and fill in each blank with no more than FIVE words on the ANSWER SHEET.Internet use appears to cause a drop in drop in psychological (心理上的)health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those results, which are completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized(推测). Faceless, bodiless "virtual"(虚拟的)communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallowe(r肤浅的,浅薄的). Another possibility is that exposure(暴露)to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives." But it’s important to remember this is not about t he technology; it’s about how it is used, " says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors(发起人). " It really points the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology. "66.The researchers found that Internet use may in psychological health.67.Researchers are puzzled over the results, which are their expectations.68.At first, the researchers expected that the Net would prove television./doc/b67672134.html,munication through Internet may be less than actual conversation.70.When we design applications and services for technology, should be considered.Ⅳ. Those with fixed mind-sets,however,never enter this focused state of learning and show little advancement.Antoine Bechara,a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Southem California, has taken Dweck’s work a step further. He recently isolated two equally sized centers in the brain. These areas interact during the decision-making process.Although more research is needed, these centers may turn out to be the physical locations for Dweck’s twin mind-sets.“We always knew people could learn from their mistakes, but now we’re finding out exactly how and where this happens,”explains Bechara.“In a normally functioning brain, failure is taken as an opportunity for learning and strengthening the species.”46.According to the passage, like a spider,a new thought or idea could.A.come from hard work B.enrich your brainC.be very fascinating D.form a knowledge web47.Which of the following statements about Antoine Bechara is true?A.He explored how human beings survive.B.He found how the brain normally functions.C.He probablydiscovered the physical locations for the twin mind-sets.D.He studied the brain waves of people with growth and fixed mind-sets.48.Carol Dweck’s work has something to do with.A.how to take photos of the brainB.how failure helps the brain“grow”C.when the areas in the brain interact with each otherD.when nerve cells fire, grow, and form new connections49.The passage is most probably from a.A.laboratory journal B.newspaper reportC.medical magazine D.personal resume50.The author’s tone can be best described as.A.objective B.critical C.personal D.officialPart III Cloze(15%)At the beginning of1993,Harrison Textile Company,a plant that makes clothes for people, suffered a disaster. Nobody wants to talk to you if you can't talk back. Can anything be done to help these children?Yes.They can go to see a speech therapist--a person who's specially trained to work out what's wrong and who knows how to teach language to children. This is what happened to Tom. The speeh therpist played some games with him and heard how he talked. She made a recording of his speech, and chatted to his mom and dad about his background. They’d taken Tom to see a doctor, but the doctor hadn’t found anything wrong with him.He seemed peretly normal in every way-except he just wasn talking.Afer Tom and his parents had gone home, the therapist listened carefully to the recording she'd made. Then she looked at a chart which showed how language developed in children aged two, three, and four. She could see Tom was a long way behind. The next step, she deided, was to teach Tom how to say some new sentences like”kick a red ball,”and”the clownis kicking a ball.”Tom didn’t get the new sentences right straight away. But therapist was very patient, and after a few more visit he started last October,Sharon Seline exchanged text messages with her daugher who was in college. They“chatted”back and forh, with the mom asking how things were going and the daugher answering psitively flowed by enotions(表情符)showing smils,b-i-g smiles and hearts.Later that night, her daughter attempted suicide. In the days that followed,it came to light that she'd hidden herself in her dorm, crying and showing signs of depression-a completely different reality from the one that she conveyed in text and Facebook posts. As human beings, our only real method of connection is through real communication.Studies show that only7%of communication is based on writing and spraking. The majority of93%is based on body language.Indeed,it’s only when we can heard a tone of voice or look into someone’s eyes that we’re able to know when“I'm fine"doesn't mean they're fine all. This is where social media gets risky. With modem technology, anyone can hide beind the text, the e-mail,or the Facebook post, projecting any image they want and creating a false image of their choosing. They can be whoever they want to be.And without the ability to receive body language, their audiences are none the wiser. This presents a paradox which doesn’t exist before. With all the power social technologies at our fingertips,we are more connected-and potentially more disconnected-than ever betore.Every relevant metric(衡量标准)shows that we are interacting at a great speed and frequency through social media. But are we really communicating?With93%of our communication context(语境)lost,we are now attempting to establish relationships and make decisions based on phrases or emoticons, which may or may not accurately represent the truth.44.Why does social media get risky according to the author?A.The users’social connection is lost.B.The users’messages may be ignored.C.The users'real emotion may be hidden.D.The users'voices can hardy be heard.45.What phenomenon does the underlined word“paradox" (Paragraph7)reflect?A.People can be both happy and unhappy.B.People can be both connected and disconneted.C.People can end up being both wise and stupid.D.People can form both true and false impressions.46.What is true about today's communication through social media?A.It causes more health risks.B.It gives litle communication context.C.It leads to better relationships.D.It improves the quality of interaction.47.What is the best title for the passage?A.Social Media and Its FunctionB.Social Media and Its AbusesC.Social Media and Its FutureD.Social Media and Its RisksPassage FourAlan Lakein,a time management expert, thinks that nothing is a total waste of time, including doing nothing at times. If you arrange things so that you find time torelax and“do nothing",you will get more done and have more fun doing it.One of his clients,a space engineer, didn't know how to“do nothing”.Every minute of his leisure time was scheduled with intense activities. He had an outdoor-activites schedule in which he switched from skiing to tennis. His girlfriend kept up with him in these activities, although she would have preferred just to sit by the fire and relax once in a while.Like too many people,he felt the need to be doing something all the time, for doing nothing seemed a waste of time. His“relaxing by the fire" consisted of playing chess, reading magazines,or checking emails. For an experiment,Alan asked him to"waste"his time for five minutes during one of their sessions together. What the engineer ended up doing was relaxing, stting quietly and daydreaming. When he was finally able to admit that emotional reasons caused him to reject relaxing as waste of time,he began to look more critically at that way of thinking.Once he knew that relaxing was a good use of time,he became less serious about being busy and started enjoying each activity more.Previously he had been so busy doing that he had no time to have fun at anything. He began to do less and have more fun. When Alan saw the client about three years later,he still had as busy a schedule as ever, but he was able to balance his activity with relaxing so that he came back to work Monday morning not feeling tired out from a busy weekend but refreshed.48.What did“doing nothing"mean to the space engineer at first?A.Outdoor activities.B.A waste of time.C.Few daily schedules.D.More family hours.49.What made the engineer reject relaxing?A.Social reasons.B.Family reasons.C.Emotional reasons.D.Physical reasons.50.What happened after the engineer learmed“doing nothing?A.He was not as busy as before.B.He began to enjoy each activity more.C.He started to do more of everything.D.He did not have as much fun as before.51.What can be iferered from the passage about“doing nothing"?A.It makes people enjoy more indoor activities.B.It enables you to have more work time.C.It serves to improve family relationship.D.It helps you do things more efficiently.Passage FiveSocrates is often referred to as one of the founders of Westerm philosophy, and yet he wrote nothing, estabished no school, and held no particular theories of his own. What he did do,however, was frequently ask the questions that interested him,and in doing so developed a new way of thinking. This method proceeds(展开)as a dialogue between opposing views, and it earmed him many enemies in Athens, where he lived. As a young man,Socrates is believed to have studied natural philosophy, looking at the various explanations of the nature of the universe, but then became involved in the politics of the city-state and concerned with more down-to-earth moral issues, such as the nature of justice. However,he was not interested in winning arguments,or arguing for the sake of making money.Nor was he seeking answers or explanations. He was simply examining the basis of the concepts we apply to ourselves(such as“good",“bad”,and“just"),for he believed that understanding what we are is the first task of philosophy. He was sentenced to death on charges of corrupting the young with bad ideas. But he also had many followers, and among them was Plato, who recorded Socrates’ideas in the written works, called dialogues,in which Socrates sets about examining various ideas.Socrates’central concerm, then, was the examination of life, and it was his cruel questioning of people's most valued beliefs(largely about themselves)that earned him his enemies-but he remained committed to his task until the very end.According to the account of his defense at his trial,Socrates chose death rather than face a life of ignorance:“The life which is unexamined is not worth living”.52.What is true about Socrates?A.Socrates solved the problems of Westerm philosophy.B.Socrates tried to find answers to his questions.C.Socrates forced his enemies to accept his ideas.D.Socrates cared about the meaning of life.53.What is the most important task of philosophy according to Socrates?A.Understanding our true self.B.Examining some basic concepts.C.Challenging the views of enemies.D.Giving explanations for arguments.54.What is the passage mainly about?A.Socrates’beliefs of philosophy.B.Socrates’outlook on death,C.Socrates’influence on youths.D.Socrates'questions about universe.55.What is the tone of the passage?A.Humorous.B.Bitter.C.Sympathetic.D.Objective.V.Daily Conversation(15points)Directions:Pick out appropriate expressions from the eigt choices below and complete the following dialogues by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.A.Sounds great!B.This is our frst trip here.C.When shall we set off?D.Could you recommend some places for us?E.You are welcome.F.What could I get?G.Have great fun.H.Is there anyhing interesting there?Receptionist:Good momning!Mr.Smith:Good morming!Today we are free for sightseeing. _____56___Receptionist:Okay.Have you ever been here before?Mr.Smith:No.____57____Receptionist:Then,I suggest that you visit the Ancient Cultural Street.Mr.Smith:_____58___Receptionist:Yes.The architectureis wonderful. It represents the folk style of the Qing Dynasty.Mr.Smith:___59_____Thank you very much.Receptionist:_____60___Have a good time!第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共25分)VI.Writing(25points)Directions:For this part, you are supposed to write an e-mail in about100-120words based onthe following situation.Remember to write it clearly.61.新学期伊始,你们班准备组织-场迎新晚会,让同学们熟悉起来。

Amelia Earhart was flying alone from North America to England in a small single-engined plane. At midnight, several hours after she had left Newfoundland, she ran into bad weather. To make things worse, her altimeter failed and she didn't know how high she was flying. At night, and in a storm, a pilot is in great difficulty without an altimeter. At times, her plane nearly plunged into the sea.Just before dawn, there was further trouble, Amelia noticed flames coming from the engine. Would she be able to reach land? There was nothing to do except to keep going and to hope.In the end, Amelia Earhart did reach Ireland, and for the courage she had shown, she was warmly welcomed in England and Europe. When she returned to the United States, she was honored by President Hoover at a special dinner in the White House. From that time on. Amelia Earhart was famous. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency(美国环保局) reports that about fifty-three thousand people die in the United States each year as a result of exposure(暴露) to second-hand smoke. It is harder for children to avoid second-hand smoke. In the United States, nine million children under the age of five live in homes with at least one smoker. Research shows that these children are sick more often than children who live in homes where no one smokes. The damaging effects of second-hand smoke on children also continue as they grow up. The children of smokers are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer when they are adults as children of non-smokers. The risk is even higher for children who live in homes where both parents smoke.People are becoming very aware of the danger of second –hand smoke. As a result, they have passed laws that prohibit people from smoking in many public places. Currently, 45states in the United States have laws that restrict, or limit, smoking. You should decide the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1-5Technology can help people work more efficiently in many ways, from helping employees communicate better to increasing company productivity. However, one of the unintended consequences of technology is how it can affect people’s social skills.Nearly everyone has a smartphone, and it’s often the first thing we turn to when we have a few minutes of free time. While there’s no thing inherently wrong with spending time on your phone, always having something to occupy your mind can limit your ability to be present and engaged in the real world. And ifwe’re not practicing our social skills, we’re at risk of losing them.Studies have shown that excessive smartphone use can decrease our ability to read facial expressions and body language. When we’re distracted by our phones, we’re not paying attention to the people around us, which leads to misunderstandings and conflict. Even worse, we might not even notice when a friend is feeling sad or when a colleague is struggling, simply because we’re not looking up from our screens.Losing our social skills can have a big impact on our careers. According to a survey, sociable people earn significantly more than those who are less sociable. The same survey also found that employees who are good at building relationships have more successful professional lives. So, while phones, social media, and other technological advancements can help us in many ways, it’s important not to let them take away from our ability to interact successfully with others.1. Part I Reading Comprehension(每题2分,共30分)Directions: there are 3 reading passages in this part. each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements for each of them there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D choose the best answer to each question.Passage OneI saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away. Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away. they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time. I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat. With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots- one for rice and one for wheat.Next I formed a clay oven and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.Soon after that. I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.I tried to turn over the ship's boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boatSo I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it fromtree to boat. When it was time to launch, I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. The dressmaker kicked dirt over the line to hide it. The farmer poured water over the line to make it disappear. None of these efforts worked, and the people went home disappointed. Everyone was puzzled about how to solve this new riddle.A week passed, and nobody had any new ideas. Then one day the baker came into the courtyard with a bag of flour.Your Majesty, " the baker said to the king, I can make your line shorter without erasing any part of it. I should also have remembered that he had a liking for being different from everyone else, if it did not conflict with his fear of drawing attention to himself. It seemed that he happened to be talking to Graham Brown of the London office, a very nice fellow, and Graham had a friend who had just entered his boy at the school, and while he was in that part of the world he thought he might just as well phone them. I remembered my eyes stinging and my chin shaking with the confusion of my feelings. 广东专插本2019英语真题作文
The Power of Perseverance in the Face ofChallengesIn the dynamic and ever-changing world of today, the journey of life is often fraught with challenges and difficulties. This is particularly true for those seeking to further their education through postgraduate studies, such as the students preparing for the Guangdong Postgraduate Entrance Examination. The 2019 English essay topic for this examination, "The Role of Perseverance in Overcoming Difficulties," highlights the significance of perseverance in the face of adversity.Perseverance is the steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. It is a quality that is honed through tough times and tests of character. As the saying goes, "No pain, no gain." This couldn't be more true when it comes to overcoming challenges in life. Whether it's the challenges posed by academic studies, career aspirations, or personal growth, perseverance is the key to unlocking success. In the context of the Guangdong Postgraduate Entrance Examination, perseverance is not just about studying hardbut also about staying focused and motivated despite the pressure and competition. The students preparing for this exam are often faced with the dual challenges of balancing their studies with other responsibilities, such as work or family, and dealing with the emotional stress that comes with the territory. Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers on Answer Sheet.(每题2分,共10分)Passage OneImagine you are a citizen of Athens, enjoying a warm Mediterranean night in the Theater of Heroes Atticus. You are wearing jeans and a T-shirt, listening to a great concert. Now rewind this picture 1,839 years. You are in the same seat, only you are watching classical Greek entertainment and wearing a simple chiton, or tunic. The city of Athens is a fun mix of the old and the new, the classic and the modem. Often a little shop is located next to the rains of a temple, which is only a block from a large, air-conditioned hotel. The great city of 2,500 years ago is still visible today.Ruins are the most obvious sign of ancient Athens, and the most famous of these is the Acropolis. The Acropolis is a large hill that was the center of life in Athens. On its slopes were temples, monuments, and theaters. From the top, you can see how the urban sprawl of Athens stretches out in every direction. On the top of the Acropolis is the Parthenon. This was once a huge temple to Athena, the city's patron. It was first completed in 432 B.C., but has been damaged and destroyed several times. However, visitors can still see the "tricks" used in building the Parthenon. The columns along the outside lean inward, and are slightly fatter in the middle. The temple is also higher in the middle than on the sides. All these effects make the Parthenon look perfectly straight from a distance.Only a block away from the Acropolis is the neighborhood of Plaka. The area, with its little shops and restaurants, is very popular with both tourists and locals, and is an important part of modem Athenian culture. Many great thinkers, writers, and political leaders lived in ancient Athens. The ruins of their homes and favorite spots are scattered throughout the busy port city. The hill where St. Paul addressed early Christian Athenians is located near the Acropolis. Great thinkers such as Pericles and Demosthenes spoke to the civil assemblies held at the Pnyx Hill. Today the Pnyx is an open-air theater for light and sound shows. Greeks still use some ancient sites, such as the Pnyx and the Theater of Heroes Atticus. During Roman times, in 76 A.D., gladiators used the Panathenaic Stadium for contests. The Olympics were held there in 1896, and today people still jog and exercise in the stadium.Tourism is very important to people who live in modem-day Athens. Thousands of people come every year to see these ruins and to tour the many museums that house artifacts from ancient times. This providesmany jobs and brings money into Athens, which helps the city pay for improvements. Athenians take pride in the accomplishments of their ancestors, and people from all around the world come to admire them. By looking around the city today, we can imagine what life was like in ancient Athens.1. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT about the city of Athens?A. The culture of the city is a mixture of the old and modem.B. Traces of the ancient city can still be found.C. Ruins and modem hotels co-exist in the city.D. All the temples are not far away from air-conditioned hotels.2. Which tourist attraction was ancient Athens most famous for?A. Plaka.B. Acropolis.C. Pnyx.D. Parthenon.3. According to the context, "tricks" in Paragraph Five refer to ______.A. mischievous actsB. confusing constructing skillsC. skillful constructing methodsD. constructing materialsPassage TwoWhat we know of prenatal development makes all this attempt made by a mother to mold the character of her unborn child by studying poetry, art, or mathematics during pregnancy seem utterly impossible. How could such extremely complex influences pass from the mother to the child? There is no connection between their nervous systems. Even the blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly. An emotional shock to the mother will affect her child, because it changes the activity of her glands and so the chemistry her blood. Any chemical change in the mother's blood will affect the child for better or worse. But we can not see how a looking for mathematics or poetic genius can be dissolved inblood and produce a similar liking or genius in the child. In our discussion of instincts we saw that there was reason to believe that whatever we inherit must be of some very simple sort rather than any complicated or very definite kind of behavior. It is certain that no one inherits a knowledge of mathematics. It may be, however, that children inherit more or less of a rather general ability that we may call intelligence. If very intelligent children become deeply interested in mathematics, they will probably make a success of that study. As for musical ability, it may be that what is inherited is an especially sensitive ear, a peculiar structure of the hands or the vocal organs connections between nerves and muscles that make it comparatively easy to learn the movements a musician must execute, and particularly vigorous emotions. If these factors are all organized around music, the child may become a musician. The same factors, in other circumstance might be organized about some other center of interest. The rich emotional equipment might find expression in poetry. The capable fingers might develop skill in surgery. It is not the knowledge of music that is inherited, then nor even the love of it, but a certain bodily structure that makes it comparatively easy to acquire musical knowledge and skill. Whether that ability shall be directed toward music or some other undertaking may be decided entirely by forces in the environment in which a child grows up.4. Which of the following statements is not true?A. Some mothers try to influence their unborn children by studying art and other subjects during their pregnancy.B. It is utterly impossible for us to learn anything about prenatal development.C. The blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly.D. There are no connection between mother's nervous systems and her unborn child's.5. A mother will affect her unborn baby on the condition that ____.A. she is emotionally shockedB. she has a good knowledge of inheritanceC. she takes part in all kind of activitiesD. she sticks to studyingVI.Cloze. Non-smokers often breathe in the smoke from other people’s cigarettes. This is second-hand smoke. The most well-known law doesn’t allow people to smoke on short native airline flights, i.e. flights within the country.11. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night. Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. Something had gone trribly wrong.Quite a few children have what is called a“language delay". For some reason they don't learn to speak as quickly as they should. Their friends shoot ahead and they’re left behind. As a result, they get very lonely. Nobody wants to talk to you if you can' t talk back. Can anything be done to help these children? Yes. They can go to see a speech therapist- -a person who's specially trained to work out what' s wrong and who knows how to teach language to children. This is what happened to Tom. The speeh therpist played some games with him and heard how he talked. She made a recording of his speech, and chatted to his mom and dad about his background. They’d taken Tom to see a doctor, but the doctor hadn’t found anything wrong with him.He seemed peretly normal in every way- except he just wasn talking.Afer Tom and his parents had gone home, the therapist listened carefully to the recording she' d made .Then she looked at a chart which showed how language developed in children aged two, three, and four. She could see Tom was a long way behind. Every minute of hisleisure time was scheduled with intense activities. He had an outdoor-activites schedule in which he switched from skiing to tennis. His girlfriend kept up with him in these activities, although she would have preferred just to sit by the fire and relax once in a while. Like too many people, he felt the need to be doing something all the time, for doing nothing seemed a waste of time. His“relaxing by the fire" consisted of playing chess, reading magazines, or checking emails. For an experiment, Alan asked him to" waste" his time for five minutes during one of their sessions together. What the engineer ended up doing was relaxing, stting quietly and daydreaming. When he was finally able to admit that emotional reasons caused him to reject relaxing as waste of time, he began to look more critically at that way of thinking. Once he knew that relaxing was a good use of time, he became less serious about being busy and started enjoying each activity more. Previously he had been so busy doing that he had no time to have fun at anything. He began to do less and have more fun. When Alan saw the client about three years later, he still had as busy a schedule as ever, but he was able to balance his activity with relaxing so that he came back to work Monday morning not feeling tired out from a busy weekend but refreshed.48. What he did do, however, was frequently ask the questions that interested him, and in doing so developed a new way of thinking. This method proceeds (展开) as a dialogue between opposing views, and it earmed him many enemies in Athens, where he lived. As a young man, Socrates is believed to have studied natural philosophy, looking at the various explanations of the nature of the universe, but then became involved in the politics of the city-state and concerned with more down-to-earth moral issues, such as the nature of justice. However, he was not interested in winning arguments, or arguing for the sake of making money. Nor was he seeking answers or explanations. He was simply examining the basis of the concepts we apply to ourselves (such as“good",“bad”, and “just" ),for he believed that understanding what we are is the first task of philosophy. He was sentenced to death on charges of corrupting the young with bad ideas. But he also had many followers, and among them was Plato, who recorded Socrates’ ideas in the written works, called dialogues, in which Socrates sets about examining various ideas.Socrates’ central concerm, then, was the examination of life, and it was his cruel questioning of people' s most valued beliefs ( largely about themselves) that earned him his enemies- but he remained committed to his task until the very end. According to the account of his defense at his trial, Socrates chose death rather than facea life of ignorance:“The life which is unexamined is not worth living”.52. What is true about Socrates?A. Socrates solved the problems of Westerm philosophy.B. Socrates tried to find answers to his questions.C. Socrates forced his enemies to accept his ideas.D. Socrates cared about the meaning of life.53. What is the most important task of philosophy according to Socrates?A. Understanding our true self.B. Examining some basic concepts.C. Challenging the views of enemies.D. Giving explanations for arguments.54. What is the passage mainly about?A. Socrates’beliefs of philosophy.B. Socrates’outlook on death,C. Socrates’influence on youths.D. Socrates' questions about universe.55. What is the tone of the passage?A. Humorous.B. Bitter.C. Sympathetic.D. Objective.V. even the ability to do well in school.By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence,we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.For example, when in a new situation,an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him.He tries to find out all be can,and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it.He probably isn't sure how it will all work out,but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right,he doesn't feel ashamed that he failed,he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life,a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.If you look at children, you'll see great difference between what we call“bright”children and“non-bright”children.They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life-he tries to get in touch with everything around him.But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world:he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.6.According to this passage, intelligence is▲.A.the ability to study wellB.the ability to do well in schoolC.the ability do deal with facility. You can shop for just about anything in the comfort of your own home, and all you need to do is to sit in your armchair and order things directly on the Internet.Shopping on the Internet offers convenience and time-saving benefits to shoppers,as compared to traditional storefront(店面)shopping.People can shop for a variety of products on the Internet, ranging from physical products, such as books,CDs,clothes and food,to information products, such as online news or magazines stories. The Internet operates24hours a day, seven days a week, unlike traditional storefronts which have fixed opening hours. No wonder that some research findings indicate that consumers views the Internet as an“instrument of convenience”.Despite the advantages of Internet shopping, there are also disadvantages One of the main concerns is the addiction that social media can create. With the constant notifications and updates, many individuals find themselves spending hours scrolling through their feeds, neglecting real-life interactions and responsibilities. Furthermore, the invasion of privacy on social media has become a prevalent issue, with personal information being vulnerable to hacking and misuse. In my opinion, the key to making good use of social media lies in moderation and self-discipline. Instead of mindlessly consuming content, users should strive to engage in meaningfulconversations and interactions. Additionally, it is essential to be cautious about the information shared online and to safeguard one's privacy through strong passwords and limited disclosure of personal details. In conclusion, while social media has brought about both positive and negative impacts on people's daily life, it is ultimately up to individuals to navigate the digital landscape responsibly. By striking a balance between online and offline activities, we can harness the benefits of social media while minimizing its adverse effects.Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points)Section ADirections: In this section, there are three passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C, and D. For each statement, mark on your Answer Sheet the paragraph that provides the information.A Different View of the IssueThe United States and Australia have much in common. Both are former British colonies. Both have a Western European heritage. Both are liberal democracies. But on an issue as important as gun control, they could hardly be further apart.Australians responded to the 1996 Port Arthur massacre—where 35 people died at the hands of a lone gunman—by passing some of the world's strictest gun laws. Unsurprisingly, gun homicides and suicides fell. More surprising was the decline in other violent crimes. Australia hasn't had a mass shooting since. In the United States, however, gun control remains limited due to a powerful gun rights movement that sees any regulation as an infringement of personal freedom. The US has mass shootings regularly. Such entirely different responses to gun violence are a subject of study from opposite sides of the Pacific.10. The United States and Australia have different views on gun control.11. The 1996 Port Arthur massacre prompted Australia to pass strict gun laws.12. Gun homicides and suicides decreased in Australia after the implementation of strict gun laws.13.
