You might think there would be more programs devoted to entertainment than to anything else, but that’s not the case. In most countries, fewer than 20% of broadcasting hours are devoted to entertainment. U.S. figures are high—34.8%,and the fun loving Canadians are even higher with 44%. Except Canada and Italy, all countries give more broadcasting time to education than to either information (news, documentaries and so on) or entertainment programs. Of course, few educational broadcasts t ake place during peak viewing times. In Japan though, more than 60% of broadcasting time is taken up with education of one kind of another—just another example of thebusinesslike Japanese philosophy. In the U.K., the figure is 56.4%. The Italians have fewer educational programs than anyone else. They donin for entertainment either. Only about ten percent of viewing time is devoted to dramas and serials, quiz shows, music, sports, etc. You willfind more news information programs on Italian TV than anything else. That’s understandable in a country experiencing social and politicaland events are changes. Italians rely on TV to tell them what’s going on—happening almost too fast to follow. The percentage o f time the U.S. devoted to news and documentary programs is much smaller. After education, most TV time is given to entertainment. Many of these programs are shown around the world.41. Based on this passage, the percentage of TV broadcasting hoursdevoted to education is greatest in _______.A. JapanB. ItalyC. CanadaD. the United States42. S. figure is smaller than the U.K. figureC. the U.K. figure is second to the Japanese figureD. the Canadian figure is higher than that of any other country44. From this passage, w e learn that most TV stations in the worlddevoted more broadcasting hours to _______.A. educational programsB. entertainment programsC. news information programsD. dramas, serials, music, sports and so on45. In the United States, _______.A. TV programs are shown for world audience to watchB. most of TV broadcasting hours are given to entertainmentC. educational programs are shown during peak viewing timesD. Little is known about his early life except that his father died when he was 10. An uncle adopted him, his two sisters, and his brother. The uncle saw to itthat the two boys received a good education. Copernicus went to the University of Cracow. There he studied such subjects as Latin, mathematics, and astronomy. It was probably at that time that he changed his Polish name, Niklas Koppernigk, to the Latin form of Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1496 Copernicus went to Italy, where he spent the next 10 years studying at various universities. In Copernicus time people still believed that all things—the sun, the stars, and the planets—moved around the earth. It was an old belief that few men had ever questioned. Aristotle had based his theory of astronomy on this belief. Because the Church had long been the center of learning, the theory was also linked to religious beliefs. In 1506 Copernicus returned to his homeland. A few years later he began to work for the Church. All those years Copernicus carried on his work in astronomy. He had just the most basic equipment and, like other scientists of his day, made observations with only his eyes. Still, using mathematics and logic, Copernicus worked out a different theory, which held that the planets went around the sun.Copernicus did not announce his ideas. He did not want to make trouble. But he could not hide the scientific truth. So he talked about his theory with his friends, who strongly advised him to have his work published. His great book, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies, appeared at the very end of his life. Copernicus saw the first copy on theday he died, May 24, 1543.31. Which of the following is TRUE about Copernicus?A. He had two brothers and a sister.B. He used to be called Niklas Koppernigk.C. He lost his father soon after he was born.D. He spent 10 years at the University of Cracow.32. From the passage we can see that Astronomy is ______.A. the life experience of great menB. the movement of the stars and the planetsC. the scientific study of natural objects in spaceD. the theories developed by scientists of old times33. Copernicus developed his theory ______.A. using various telescopesB. based on Aristotle’s beliefsC. through observations and reasoningD. under the encouragement of his friends34. The writer of the passage wants us to know that ______.A. Copernicus did not tell about his discovery until the day of his deathB. for many years Copernicus dared to do nothing openly against the ChurchC. pushed by his friends Copernicus decided to write a book in May1543D. shortly before he got back to Poland Copernicus started to work for the Church35. Copernicus had his great book published because ______.A. he didn’t agree with AristotleB. he could not hide the scientific truthC. he worked for the churchD. his friends advised him to do soPart IV ClozeDirections:In this part, you are required to read the following passage carefully and then choose the best answer from the 4 choicesmarked A), B), C) and D) . As the most popular medicine in the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap. Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(片剂) were available in the United States. For millions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing that works. A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. On the other hand, it is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users. Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.1、This article discusses __________.A、the multiple functions of aspirinB、how and why aspirin was inventedC、the history and the features of aspirinD、how to take aspirin properly正确答案:C2、According to the second paragraph, salicylates is __________.A、leaves and tree barksB、the old name of aspirinC、the name of a US companyD、a component of aspirin正确答案:D3、Which symptom can NOT be treated by aspirin?A、feverB、reactionsC、painD、inflammation正确答案:B4、It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the best way to take aspirin is to take it __________.A、with bitter waterB、with orange juiceC、in tablet formD、in powder form正确答案:D5、The author of this article seems to be__________.A、against the use of aspirinB、in favour of aspirinC、doubtful about aspirinD、not interested in aspirin正确答案:B五、阅读理解 (15分)Interact use appears to cause a drop in psychological (心理的) health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless“virtual”(虚的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to reme mber this is not about the technology, it' s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors (发起人). “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and servi ces for technology.”1、The finding of the research undertaken at Carnegie Mellon University is thatInternet use may cause a drop in psychological health. ( )A、TB、F正确答案:A2、The researchers expected before the research Internet use has nothing to do with social health. He leaned over the receptionist’s desk and asked. “What tribe(部落) is he?” When the receptionist told him that the manager was a Mashona, the applicant replied, “Then I'll never get the job.”This phenomenon is called tribalism(部落主义). There are more than 2,000 tribes in black Africa. Each has its own language, customs, and physical characteristics that make its members almost immediately recognizable to a person from another tribe. To the Westerner, tribalism is one of the most difficult of African customs tounderstand. It makes many people think of savagery, warfare, or old-fashioned customs. However, to most Africans, tribalism simply means very strong loyalty to one’s ethnic group. It is a force that can be both good and bad. By definition tribalism means sharing among members of the extended family. It makes sure that a person is taken care of by his own group tribesman. To give a job to a fellow is not wrong; it is an obligation. Similarly, for a politician or military leader, it is considered good common sense to choose his closest advisers from people of his own tribe. This ensures security, continuity, and authority. Tribal loyalty may mean a quick promotion—from sergeant to captain, from clerk to manager—within a very short time.Modern African politicians publicly speak out against tribal divisions. Yet it remains perhaps the most powerful force in day-to-day African life.1、In paragraph 1, why did the young man believe his job application will be refused?A、His behavior was not appropriate.B、He belonged to the same tribe with the manager.C、He didn’t belong to the same tribe with the manager.D、His questions annoyed the receptionist.正确答案:C2、The situation in the first paragraph is an example of_______.A、the difficulty of getting a job in AfricaB、the disagreement on tribalism among AfricansC、the great numbers of tribes in AfricaD、the importance of tribalism in Africa正确答案:D3、What might be the common attitudes of Westerners towards tribalism?A、positiveB、indifferentC、negativeD、none of the above正确答案:C4、According to the article, which of the following is NOT an evidence of tribalism?A、Sergeants maintain security in his own tribe.B、Politicians choose men from his own tribe as intimate advisers.C、Military leaders promote fellow tribesmen to higher positions.D、Managers give jobs to fellow tribesmen.正确答案:A5、What would be the future of tribalism?A、It will soon be destroyed by modern politicians.B、It will remain as strong as it is today and never be changed.C、It will gradually disappear as the society develops.D、It will speed up further division of tribes.正确答案:C七、阅读理解 (15分)Drilling or digging for oil has occurred in one way or another for hundreds of years. The Chinese, for instance, invented a bamboo rig to obtain oil and gas for lighting and cooking. But only in the last 40 years has humankind been able to efficiently extract petroleum from beneath the seas--an achievement to rank with this century's mightiest technological triumphs. In Australia, nearly 90 percent of our petroleum wealth is found offshore. The search is difficult, extremely expensive, and often fruitless--but critical to the nation's economic future.Oil—black gold--is one of the ocean's greatest resources. Today from crude oil we make gasoline for our cars, diesel fuel for our trucks and ships, and jet fuel for our airplanes. Crude oil is a mixture of organic chemicals (chemical compounds containing the element carbon) of liquids and dissolved gases which are of little use in its crude state. In addition, oil is used to generate electricity, heat our buildings, lubricate out machines, and even make plastics, detergents, rubbers, and chemicals. Oil has transformed our daily lives. In fact, nearly one-third of the world's oil comes from offshore fields in our oceans. Areas most popular for oil drilling are the Arabian Gulf, the North Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. The new deep ocean drilling, by use of the latest technology, aims at drilling operation at greater depth than were possible by conventional methods. At the same time, through recovery of samples of rock and sedimentation as well as sensoring inside the bore hole, it should add knowledge to such issues of mankind as global warming, earthquake, and the origin of life.1、Humankind was not able to extract petroleum efficiently from beneath the sea until 40 years ago.( )A、TB、F正确答案:A2、Searching oil from offshore fields is very important for Australian economic future.( )A、TB、F正确答案:A3、Crude oil can be used in many aspects of our life even in its crude state.( )A、TB、F正确答案:B4、More than 30% of the world’s oil comes from offshore fields in the oceans. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day.Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked “Smith Enterprises”, she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no reply. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no answer. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in.Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had the interview with Mr. Smith, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. In the front of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. Smith, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realized that the day’s work in the office began just before Mr. Smith arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.1、Marie felt nervous when she knocked at the door because______.A、it was her first day in a new jobB、she was a little bit late for workC、she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong placeD、there was no answer from inside the office正确答案:B2、Marie could hardly recognize the office she went into as______.A、she had been there only onceB、Mr. Smith was not in the officeC、nobody was doing any workD、the office had a new appearance正确答案:D3、The people in the office suddenly started working because______.A、they saw a stranger in the officeB、their morning break was endedC、no one wanted to talk to MarieD、the boss was about to arrive正确答案:D4、We can infer from the text that the employees of the enterprise______.A、would start their work by listening to a jokeB、were cold to newcomersC、were always punctual for workD、lacked devotion to the company正确答案:D5、The best title for this text would be______.A、Punctual Like A ClockB、A Cold WelcomeC、An Unpunctual ManagerD、Better Late Than Never正确答案:A九、写作题 (45分)1、请在30分钟内,根据下面所给的题目和提纲用英语写出一篇不少于80词的短文。
