The chemical similarities are so great ,in fact, that the composition of other species' tears—and how they're adapted to their environments一may provide insights into better treatments for human eye disease.Previously, scientists had studied closely only the tears of a handful of mammals, including humans, dogs, horses, camels, and monkeys. In the new study, Brazilian veterinarians analyzed 高三英语第2页(共10页)the tears of reptiles and birds for the first time, focusing on seven species.Tears, which are released from tear tubes, form a film over the eye that's composed of three ingredients: mucus, water, and oil. The mucus coats the eye's surface and helps to attach the film to the eye, the water is a natural salty solution containing crucial proteins and minerals, and the oil prevents the eye from drying out.Humans are the only known species to produce emotional tears; the expression M crocodile tears,'‘ which refers to a person's phony display of emotion, comes from the mysterious tendency of crocodiles to release tears as they eat.But tears play key roles beyond weeping, notes Lionel Sebbag at Iowa State University, who was not involved in the new research. They help with vision by lubricating (润滑)and clearing the eye. They also protect the eye against infection and provide nutrition to the cornea(角膜), the eye4 5 6 7 8s clear outer layer, which lacks blood tubes,he says.Learning how reptiles and birds9 use tears may also inspire new medications for conditions such as dry eye, which occurs when tear tubes don't produce enough oil. The disease, common in cats, dogs, and people, can sometimes lead to blindness. The Pomodoro technique is probably one of the most powerful techniques in all of learning. All you have to do is set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just fbcus as attentively as you can for those 25 minutes. Now if you start focusing on and you're working on, and then you look up at the timer and two minutes have passed. You may feel like you can't hold on. And just let the thought go by, and return your4 What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The source of tears.B. The composition of tears.C. The classification of tears.D. The definition of tears.5 What does the underlined word "phony" in paragraph 4 mean?A.Tricky.B. Regretful.C. Cold.D. False.6 Which statement does Lionel Sebbag agree with?A.Weeping contributes to eye disease.B. The cornea has rich blood tubes.C. Tears oil and clear the eyes.D. More tears mean better vision.7 What might be the best title for the text?A.Tears, a barrier to eyesB.A better treatment for eye diseaseC.Non-human tears promise new cures focus to whatever you are working on. And when that 25 minutes is up you relax a little bit. You might wonder why that 25 minutes is the magic number, and the reality is we don't really know. There's not a lot of research on the Pomodoro technique, which is surprising because it's so incredibly popular and people find it very useful. But there's an interesting tidbit (/|、趣闻)related to the Pomodoro technique, and that is that:when you just think about something that you don't like very much,it stimulates a part of the brain that experiences pain. And so the brain naturally enough shifts its attention to something else, like Facebook or Twitter or something like that. And what the Pomodoro technique does, when you do it you're setting that timer. You don't want to sit there and think,'‘ Fm going to work on this problem and get it all finished. " You just want to think,M Tve got 25 minutes where I just have to work on something. " Don't even think about what that something is. What that does is it slips in under your brain's radar (雷达).It doesn't stimulate so much that pain in your brain; and then that pain in the brain, research has shown, lasts for 20 minutes. So if you work for 25 minutes you will suddenly find yourself getting into the flow because you've gone past that painful period. So the Pomodoro technique is effective in many different aspects.8.Which is an example of using the Pomodoro technique?A.Reading a novel for 25 minutes.B.Spending 25 minutes scanning WeChat.C.Setting a timer for 25 minutes to do a tough task.D.Attending a lecture for 25 minutes with two minds.9.What can be inferred about the Pomodoro technique from paragraph 2?A.The first two minutes is vital.B.25 minutes is a magic number.C.More research is around the comer.D.You may get discouraged when using it.10.Why is the tidbit mentioned in paragraph 3?A.To further explain the Pomodoro technique.B.To arouse interest in the Pomodoro technique.C.To highlight how to use the Pomodoro technique.D.To prove the eflectiveness of the Pomodoro technique.11.How does the Pomodoro technique work?A.It boosts your concentration.B.It helps your mind go faster.C.It urges you to finish your work.D.It shortens the pain time in your brain.DNothing is "new and improved v anymore. It's all about the plus.u Something exciting is happening in March,99 flowed out an email from CBS All Access, alerting subscribers that the streaming service is being renamed Paramount +. The company seeks to keep pace with Apple TV+, ESPN +, Disney +, BET +, AMC + and others.Video services didn't start this. The Apple II + came out in 1979 and Crest + toothpaste in 2002. But TV streaming companies now apparendy must be branded plus, for fear that consumers perceive their offerings as a minus (减).Much of this has to do with justifying a monthly charge for television—which used to be free. A more complete name would be u Paramount + a Bill."Hulu used to have a "plus" service, which was a misnomer (误称)since what customers got with it was the absence of ads. " We've had firn with our old friend Plus," the company 高三英语第5页(共10页)explained in a 2015 email, "but it's time to move on. We just wanted to let you know that we are retiring the Hulu Plus name. From now on,we will just be known as Hulu. No ' Plus.'"Yet other streaming services have been drawn to the plus, thanks in large part to the success of Disney+, which added 86 million subscribers during its first year. Disney also operates ESPN + and, outside the U. S. ,Star+ .A funny thing about marketing: A plus is always a plus but a minus is never a minus— even though more products are notable for what they cut down. Budweiser wouldn't call its lower- calorie beer Bud-. There are fat-free potato chips and cookies ,but Pringles - or Oreos - is abandoned.Americans have a fondness for plus-size portions, plus-size clothing and media that have plus signs in their names. Mercifully, the plus thing hasn't yet reached more important aspects of our lives.12.What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 3 refer to?A. Apple service.B. Video service.C. Plus service.D. In fact, I believe we all have the ability to remember up to six times more than we do.A lot of people find that visualizing information is very helpful. For example, if you are trying to remember a telephone number, imagine it written down on a piece of paper.Remembering people’s names is a problem for a lot of people. I recommend that when you are introduced to someone you concentrate on his or her first name. It probably won’t offend anyone if you have to say, “What was your last name again, Sarah?” but Sarah might be upset if you forget her first name.Of course, regular breaks are important and i t’s better not to work for long periods without taking one, stopping for rest about every twenty minutes is best. Finally, take care of yourself physically. Avoid substances like coffee, alcoholor drugs, because they dull the mind. And don’t forget you r vitamins—B1 and B2 are particularly good for the memory.此文档是由网络收集并进行重新排版整理.word可编辑版本!。

Cocoa production hit a record high of4.4million tons last year but about30%of the precious crop is regularly lost to pests and diseases. Now we don’t want that,do we?Demand for chocolate has been increasing faster than the world supply of cocoa and researchers think that new varieties are key to solving this problem. The University of Reading has been protecting the quality of the new crops since1985,after it took over the task from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew,London. And it has improved its facilities. The leader of the institution’s cocoa project,Professor Paul Hadley, says,“One of the main issues concerning cocoa improvement is the supply of reliably clean, healthy, interesting cocoa material.”The cocoa centre has a collection of400plant varieties and their greenhouse uses a lot of energy to keep them in tropical conditions. After up to two years in quarantine, clean and safe seeds are sent to some20countries,including several in West Africa. That’s where75%of the cocoa used for chocolate worldwide comes from. The crop is extremely important for the local economy:it employs about two million people.Professor Hadley says he works with a small team of skilled technicians who look after the collection. And more of us seem to count on them now.The scientist says,“there is some concern within the industry that demand is increasing constantly, particularly in countries like China, where the standard of living is increasing and people are getting a taste for different chocolates.”8.What is the text mainly about?A.Safeguarding cocoa seeds.B.Planting cocoa worldwide.C.Keeping cocoa in greenhouse.D.Finding the new market for cocoa.9.The institution’s cocoa project is to_______.A.have cocoa skin removedB.offer more jobs to peopleC.ensure the quality of cocoaD.supply cocoa for two million people10.What does the last paragraph tell us?A.The taste of chocolates is changing.B.Demand for cocoa is increasing fast.C.People are concerned about cocoa varieties.D.Chinese have a long history of eating chocolates.11.What’s the purpose of the text?A.To educate.B.To advertise.C.To warn.D.To inform. The poaching,or illegal killing,of rhinos(犀牛)in South Africa is growing worse each year. The government recently reported that a record number of rhinos were poached in2014,a year which had more rhino killings in South Africa than ever before. The World Wildlife Fund,or WWF,says about20,000rhinos live in South Africa. That is more than80percent of the rhinos in the world.Edna Molewa,South Africa’s environmental issues minister,says,“During2014,we are sad to say this,1,215rhinos were killed. This is a rise in the number of poached rhinos from1004in2013and indeed very worrying.”The animals are hunted for their horns(犀牛角).Many people in Asia believe the horn has curing power, which drives poachers,at all costs, mad for more horns. But there is no scientific evidence for this belief. The horn is made of keratin. That is the same thing as human hair, fingernails and toenails.Ms.Mo1ewa said386suspected poachers were arrested last year,an increase from the year before. But rhino protection workers say poachers often go unpunished after arrest.South Africa’s legal system is ineffective.Ms.Molewa said more needs to be done and South Africa is taking strong measures to protect rhinos. The efforts include moving some of the animals to secret places in neighboring countries.“Now approximately100rhinos have been moved to neighboring states in the SADC region during2014and200more rhinos will be moved this year”Molewa said.Jo Shaw, the rhino program manager at the WWF,said,“we’re talking about a loss of a hundred rhinos a month.Or more than three a day.We really need to see effective action not just at a national level but internationally.”She says officials should find the criminal groupsresponsible for the poaching and punish them.Government officials are to meet in Botswana in March at the Inter-governmental Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade.12.What do we know about rhinos?A.Half of the rhinos live in South Africa.B.Less than1,000rhinos were killed in2013.C.The killing reached the highest point in2014.D.There are only20,000rhinos left in the world.13.What is the main reason for people to hunt rhinos?A.To get more keratin.B.To protect the farmland.C.To use them for decoration.D.To make money from horns.14.Jo Shaw thinks that_________.A.many criminal groups are well organizedB.new laws are needed to punish the killersC.rhino protection needs international cooperationD.conferences about protecting rhinos are to be held every year15.What can we infer from the text?A.Rhino protection has a long way to go.B.No one would like to buy horns in the future.C.The illegal killing of rhinos will soon disappear.D.Rhinos living in South Africa will move to other countries.评卷人得分二、七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
