He also served in the Virginia militia for several years.In 1751, Washington traveled to Barbados with his younger brother, where he contracted smallpox. After his recovery, he returned to Virginia, and his father sent him to study at the College of William & Mary.Washington returned to Virginia in 1753, and was appointed Adjutant General of the Virginia militia. He served in this capacity until 1758, when he resigned due to poor health.
