East meets WestImpression On the Film Gua Sha Treatment Gua Sha Treatment is a film directed by Zheng Xiaolong in 2001, in which Liang Jiahui and Jiang Wenli are the main performers. The major contradiction shown in the film directly presents the distinguished differences between Chinese and American cultures. I’d like to share my own ideas based on the overview of the entire movie.After years of hard work in the area of video game, Xu Datong, a Chinese immigrant to the US, has finally achieved success as an outstanding designer. With his promising career and loving family, he feels he has become a true American. One day, Datong’s father comes over from China and uses a traditional Chinese medical technique, called GuaSha, to treat Datong`s son, Dennis. Unexpectedly, an American doctor thinks the bruises on Dennis’ back left by the GuaSha treatment are signs of child abuse, the doctor called the Children's Rights Protection Centre take Dennis to stay away from his families . But for the grandfather of Dennis can get the Green Card, so Datong is charged with the behavior and the finger is pointed at him. He must prove that the scraping is a treatment to reunite his son and family. The Treatment is a true portrayal of the enormous gulfs between cultures and their possible repercussion between cultures and their possiblerepercussions.Chinese culture has thousands of years’ history and forms its own unique ethic. Caring for the youngs, ancestor worship and the proliferation of offspring, which also forms our Chinese characteristic "playing a pro, yelled at love." The traditional concept, people only grow up on our land can really understand its meanings. In the film Da Tong's son Dennis does n’t understand that, so he and his playmates always have contradictions. This is the difference between Chinese and Western in Family Ethics. In medicine there is another difference, westerners are difficult to understand Chinese scraping therapy. In court, lawyers and judges are confused when it comes to traditional Chinese medicine. In fact, even Chinese, a lot of people do not really understand traditional Chinese medicine theory of Yin and Yang, the five elements, meridians. The film also allows us to think about the prospect of Chinese medicine. In today's quick success, if we want to rejuvenate our traditional Chinese medicine, especially to win widespread acceptance in the world, we should try our best to communicate with western world! Fortunately, Chinese medicine’s efficacy of the treatment has gotten a lot of people's attention, it has gradually been accepted.Datong’s boss went to court to give his hands to Datong, but when he sees the pictures on the result of Dennis’s wounds, he doesn’t say anything . This also caused strong resentment ofDatong , and he thinks the boss is not a friend and resigns from his company and even says "Dao bu tong bu xiang wei mou." (Don't attempt to work with people whose way is not your way.) This is a point we should think. Indeed, in our lives, we will give more or less help because of the relationship closeness. But Datong's boss isn’t, when he thinks Datong abused child, he doesn’t help his defense longer. But when he learns from Father that GuaSha is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy, he goes to China to look for proofs, to let Datong and his families’reunion. Shouldn’t we cherish this friendship? In this story, we can see that the concept of rule of law in Europe deeply rooted, and the trace of Chinese rule of man.When it comes to education, in the opening celebration held for Datong , Dennis and boss’s son has an argument, Datong asks Dennis to apologize to the boss's son, Dennis did not follow the ask, so Dennis is beaten. Later, his boss finds it hard to understand. Chinese people emphasize others’ minding, westerners stress own minding. The two persons coming from two different culture areas have completely different concepts. In the film, the nurse finds a small scar on the back of Dennis and calls the report immediately , others appears in court to testify in order to make child get away from abuse , because they think it is good for the child. We can think in China, for self-interest, who will do this thing to offend people?AS far as I am concerned temper, on trial , the lawyer ofthe Children's Rights Protection Centre misinterpreted in the classic "Journey to the West" the spirit of the Monkey King in order to win the lawsuit . And finally he angers Xu Datong and lets this thing go a lawsuit. In this case, Chinese temper just falls into the trap of American coolness. Seeing Xu Datong is exasperated and irrational performance, all audience may sympathized deeply , while disgusted the lawyer. But in real life, anger often does not help, it will only make things worse. Anger is a double-edged sword, so that people who love their injuries, but also to his injury. Perhaps, a person is only good at controlling his anger, is sensible with what is happening, is a real mature right attitude.Cross-culture understanding is easily noticeable, admired, however, difficult to achieve, especially when we are situated in occasions that the culture differences are definitely apparent. But we still look forward to fair love that is able to accept different ideas result from various cultures. When I wrote the article, I found that "Gua Sha" had translated into English as “scraping”, which represented available communication between China and the west. When his father visits from China， he performs Gua Sha (a Chinese traditional treatment) on his grandson， which leaves bright red
marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse。
In the court，Datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son。
I think this scene is shocking and thought-provoking to most of the Chinese audiences。
But the most impressing scene to me is the
ending。
Datong wants to see his son in Christmas eve， he has to
climb a pipe to the ninth floor which his son lives。
I think the
pipe is not only a pipe， but also a gap， a deep gap between
American and 5000-year Chinese culture。
He wants to climb over the gap and he will never succeed， perhaps no Chinese people really
could succeed。

一次，许大同六岁的儿子丹尼尔肚子痛，老爷子就用中国传统的疗法给孙子刮痧。
结果，丹尼尔意外受了点外伤，在医院理解检查时，医护人员看到他背上的痧痕，怀疑这孩子在家里长期受到虐待，于是联系了美国儿童保护中心，从而引起了一系列的官司。
