Are there benefits to be gained from avoiding the use of modern technology, even when using it would make life easier? Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority? Can any obstacle or disadvantage be turned into something good?Do people aomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way?Can any obstacle or disadvantage be turned into something good? Is deception ever justified? Does having too much information about public figures distract us from the important issues?Do we place too little value on privacy?Do people need to know the source of any information before they use it?Are the consequences of peoples actions more important than the motives behind the actions? Are people overly influenced by unrealistic claims and misleading images?。

Write an essay in which you explain how Dana Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience that the decline of reading in America will have a negative effect on society. In your essay, analyze how Gioia uses one or more of the features listed in the box above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Gioia’s cla ims, but rather explain how Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience.SAT写作满分范文:In the article, “Why Literature Matters” by Dana Gioia, Gioia makes an argument claiming that the levels of interest young Americans have shown in art in recent years have declined and that this trend is a severe problem with broad consequences. Strategies Gioia employs to support his argument include citation of compelling polls, reports made by prominent organizations that have issued studies, and a quotation from a prominent author. Gioia’s overall purpose in writing this article appears to be to draw attention towards shortcomings in American participation in the arts. His primary audience would be the American public in general with a significant focus on millenials. In his introduction paragraph, Gioia employs a distinct contrast with several listed positive changes in American life such as increased college attendance and increases in income, with the focus of his article: the fact that theinterest young Americans show in art has declined. This tool is utilized to establish an emphasis on his primary point by highlighting it as a negative development relative to other changes in American life. This literary tool serves a strong purpose by acting as a vehicle to draw the audience into the principle issue addressed by the writing. In paragraph 5, Gioia utilizes a synergistic reference to two separate sources of information that serves to provide a stronger compilation of support for his main topic. By citing a quotation from author Daniel Pinks who states, that the talents individuals require for success in the 21st Century are not, “linear, logical, analytic talents,” but ones that provide, “the ability to create artistic and emotional beauty,to detect patterns and opportunities,” and “to craft a satisfying narrative,” Gioia is able to build his point with the agreement of a respected individual. He then immediately follows with a statement that business leaders like to see,“imagination, creativity, and higher order thinking” as qualities for individuals in management positions. This dual utilization of claims from two separate sources conveys to Gioia’s audience the sense that the skills built through immersion in the arts are vital to succeeding in the modern workplace which aids in logically leading his audience to the conclusion that a loss of experience with the arts may foreshadow troubling results. In paragraph 6, Gioia follows up on the point established in paragraph 5 by introducing a negative example of the consequences of loss of the arts with afocu on literacy. Gioia cites a 2001 poll on the National Association of American Manufactures stating stating that poor reading skills ranked second among its employees surveyed for skill deficiencies while 38% of employees believed local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension. Gioias presentation of a numerical statistic based on a major employer adds significant logical weight to his argument by providing an example of the effects of a deficit in experience with art and literature. This may effect his audience by providing a more accurrate depiction of the true problems caused by disconnection with arts while possibly choosing an example they could personally relate to.Overall, Gioia provides an strong logical argument that disconnection with the arts is troubling for America. He employs strong logical connections and establishes realOworld foundations for his point.

Assignment:When a project is not going on well, is it better for people to continue or just simply quit?(当工作遇到问题时,应该继续还是放弃。

这道题的前提条件为“a project not going well”,决策选择为“continue”or “simply quit”,任选其一或中立都可。

今天SAT亚太区考试的essay写作题目是:“are living in single community rather than shifting conrtibuting to happiness"(根据何同学回忆),大概意思是问”一个人是在“单一”社区生活”快乐“还是不断改变所生活的社区”快乐“?

AssignmentWhat motivates people to change? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from you reading, studies, experience, or observations.Sample EssayWhat motivates people to change is a relentless and innate desire for self-improvement. Rarely ever has history seen a man or society kick back, relax, and say “Well that about does it. Not much else to do here!” Within every person is the po tential to achieve greatness in some form; be it athletically, mentally, spiritually. This inherent potential demands that people continue to explore and change both their environments and themselves throughout their life’s course. Never should a man be idle for too long. After acknowledging the changes a man has already made to his environment, the pursuit of self-improvement will once again stir within his soul and call him to action. This internal desire, this pursuit of challenge and perfection, does not prohibit man from being happy with his status and achievements. On the contrary, the device serves more to allow the man to constantly strive for greater change, newer innovation. What motivates people to change is the ongoing need to redefine people’s l ives and identities –to elevate them to higher levels of eminence and success.A good example of this can be seen in clinical psychology. When patients seek therapy for difficulties that have encumbered their daily functioning, they most often arrive for treatment voluntarily and willingly- they consciously accept the necessity of therapy and so participate without any duress. During the course of clinical therapy, the patient’s concerns, anxieties, ideas, emotions, and fears are brought to light. However, the clinician does not try to alter the beliefs, feeling, and sentiments of his client; rather, he simply illuminates them in order to provide the patient with an accurate view of himself. The process, of raising concerns and ideas to the surface of conscious awareness, is known as clarification. Modern psychology is far throw from the psychoanalysis of Freud’s time, in which psychologists attempted to” interpret” pre-and unconscious feelings that had been repressed by the patient. Because clinicians only clarify, and not dissect, alter, or interpret a client’s inner desires and emotions, the client himself is responsiblefor instituting change. If he is to change, he must dictate the course of therapy, and make the conscious choice to improve himself. This widely used approach is called “client centered therapy.” If the client’s ennui or ill feelings are due to situational factors or internal designs (as oppose to biological changes that would qualify for a diagnosis of psychopathology (mental disorder)), he must change them on his own accord to precipitate change within himself. The therapist will not “cure” him in any way. He alone must answer the call within himself to refine and redefine his identity and place in society. This need, of self-improvement, also initially brought him to the therapist. He was able tore cognize the disorder of his environment and acknowledge his own negative feelings. This in turn brought him to therapy, where he was guided through a process of introspection that ultimately enabled him to improve himself, assuage his anxieties, and rightfully continue on his lifelong pursuit of even greater achievements.。

The following sample Essay prompt is followed by an annotated version of the source text that suggests some of the ways that students might analyze the text in response to the prompt. The annotations are only examples of elements of the passage students may choose to write about. As you read the passage below, consider how Paul Bogard uses Evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims.Reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence.Stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed.Adapted from Paul Bogard, “Let There be Dark.”2012 by the Los Angeles Times. Originally published December 21, 2012.At my family’s cabin on a Minnesota lake, I knew woods so dark that my hands disappeared before my eyes. I knew night skies in which meteors left smoky trails across sugary spreads of stars. But now, when 8 of 10 children born in the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way, I worry we are rapidly losing night’s natural darkness before realizing its worth. This winter solstice, as we cheer the days’gradual movement back toward light, let us also remember the irreplaceable value of darkness. All life evolved to the steady rhythm of bright days and dark nights. Today, though, when we feel the closeness of nightfall, we reach quickly for a light switch. And too little darkness, meaning too much artificial light at night, spells trouble for all.Already the World Health Organization classifies working the night shift as a probable human carcinogen, and the American Medical Association has voiced its unanimous support for “light pollution reduction efforts and glare reduction efforts at both the national and state levels.”Our bodies need darkness to produce the hormone melatonin, which keeps certain cancers from developing, and our bodies need darkness for sleep.Sleep disorders have been linked to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and depression, and recent research suggests one main cause of “short sleep”is “long light.”Whether we work at night or simply take our tablets, notebooks and smart phones to bed, there isn’t a place for this much artificial light in our lives. The rest of the world depends on darkness as well, including nocturnal and crepuscular speciesof birds, insects, mammals, fish and reptiles. Some examples are well known—the400 species of birds that migrate at night? in North America, the sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs—and some are not, such as the bats that save American farmers billions in pest control and the moths that pollinate 80% of the world’s flora. Ecological light pollution is like the bulldozer of the night, wrecking habitat and disrupting ecosystems several billion years in the making. Simply put, without darkness, Earth’s ecology would collapse . . .In today’s crowded, louder, more fast-paced world, night’s darkness can provide solitude, quiet and stillness, qualities increasingly in short supply. Every religious tradition has considered darkness invaluable for a soulful life, and the chance to witness the universe has inspired artists, philosophers and everyday stargazers since time began. In a world awash with electric light. . . how would Van Gogh have given the world his “Starry Night”? Who knows what this vision of the night sky might inspire in each of us, in our children or grandchildren?Yet all over the world, our nights are growing brighter. In the United States and Western Europe, the amount of light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year. Computer images of the United States at night, based on NASA photographs, show that what was a very dark country as recently as the 1950s is now nearly covered with a blanket of light. Much of this light is wasted energy, which means wasted dollars. Those of us over 35 are perhaps among the last generation to have known truly dark nights. Even the northern lake where I was lucky to spend my summers has seen its darkness diminish. It doesn’t have to be this way. Light pollution is readily within our ability to solve, using new lighting technologies and shielding existing lights. Already, many cities and towns across North America and Europe are changing to LED streetlights, which offer dramatic possibilities for controlling wasted light. Other communities are finding success with simply turning off portions of their public lighting after midnight. Even Paris, the famed “city of light,”which already turns of fits monument lighting after 1 a.m., will this summer start to require its shops, offices and public buildings to turn off lights after 2 a.m. Though primarily designed to save energy, such reductions in light will also go far in addressing light pollution. But we will never truly address the problem of light pollution until we become aware of the irreplaceable value and beauty of the darkness we are losing.Assignment: Write an essay in which you explain how Paul Bogard builds an argument to persuade his audience that natural darkness should be preserved. In your essay, analyze how Bogard uses one or more of the features listed in the box above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Bogard’s claims, but rather explain how Bogard builds an argument to persuade his audience. 用词:a)The descriptive words used in this sentence add visual intensity, evoking the wonder of the night sky.

DO ACTIONS, NOT WORDS, REVEAL A PERSON OR GROUP'S ATTITUDES AND INTENTIONS? Both actions and words reveal attitudes and intentionsThe true attitudes and intentions of an individual person or a group of individuals will be not easily discovered if the person or the group calculatedly covers or hides them. The complexity of human beings is that they are able to deceive others. However, both the words and the actions reveal some of their true intentions, inclinations, and attitudes, depending on the knowledge, experience, and wisdom of the perceive.Words are able to convey the true attitudes. But at the same time, words can be well used as a means to deceive others or to hide the true intentions of the speaker. This is not necessarily lies. When one person or a group of persons clearly and unequivocally articulate his or their attitudes towards one or a series of social, economic, cultural, or religion problems, these words are used perfectly to convey the thoughts. For instance, when the Chinese president Hu Jintao clearly claimed that the problems in Tibet fall in the scope of Chinese domestic political and cultural issues, these words reveal the attitudes of his administration. But not in all cases humans are willing to entirely and clearly express their attitudes in the form of speeches or words. Under such conditions, words might lead the audiences to go astray. For example, in many cases, when a Chinese girl receives a bandle of rose from her boy friend, she will not use words in literal means. Rather she, not calculatedly, prefers to use words i n figurative or even ambiguous senses. A particular but typical sentence in such case is “I hate you”. Paradoxically, when girls say the words, their actions show that they love the boys.As far as the relationship between actions and true attitudes is concerned, the role actions play are not much different from those of words. That is to say, the actions of a person and a group of persons have two opposite functions. On the one hand they might reflect or mirror the true intention or inclination. This is much common among children. When a child cries, the baby is not satisfied. But in the field of political affairs, the situation might be totally reverased. For instance, when the Chinese King of Han Dynasity cried in front of his crew, he conveyed a complex sense and sensibility, attempting to cover not reveal his true attitude. As the means of conveyance or communication, both human language and human behavior have at least double functions. Therefore, it is presumptuous to conclude that actions reveal the true attitude while the words have no such a function. The fact is that the true attitudes or intentions of human beings can only be revealed by those who have rich experience, wisdom, and knowledge in language, psychology, and the like. Another case in point is that when the great lecturer cried two hundred years ago: “Is life so dear? Or peace so sweet? Even to be purchased at the price ofslave ry and chains?...to give me the liberty or to give me the death!” He clearly stated his point that the people must work together, pray together, and struggle together to build the new country, an independent and interdependent sovereingty. This case once again demonstrates the power of words in expressing the attitudes of a group.

Do people succeed by emphasizing their difference from others?

Is creativity needed more than ever in the world today?

This past year, I was auditioning for the fall play, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." To my detriment I thought it would be a good idea to watch the movie in order to prepare. For two hours I studied Elizabeth Taylor's mannerisms, attitude, and diction, hoping I could mimic her performance. (背景)I auditioned for the part of “Maggie” feeling perfectly confident in my portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor, however, I was unaware that my director saw exactly what I had been thinking. Unfortunately, I didn‘t get the part, and my director told me that he needed to see “Maggie”from my perspective, not Elizabeth Taylor’s.(失败的记忆)I learned from this experience, and promised myself I would not try to imitate another actress, in order to create my character. (从失败中经验教训)Persevering, I was anxious to audition for the winter play just two months later. The play was Neil Simon's "Rumors," and would get the opportunity to play "Chris," a sarcastic yet witty role, which would be my final performance in high school. In order to develop my character, I planned out her life just as I thought it should be, gave her the voice I thought was right, and the rest of her character unfolded beautifully from there. (准备过程)My director told me after the first show that “Rumors” was the best work he‘d ever seen from me, and that he was amazed at how I’d developed such a believable character.

OG P175:The SAT Essay asks you to analyze a provided argument in order to explain how the author builds his or her argument to persuade an audience.(摘自OG P175)重点是一个词:argument韦氏词典释义为:discourse intended to persuade翻译成中文就是:旨在说服他人的论述每一篇文章都旨在说服读者接受一个主论点。

Is creativity needed more than ever in the world today? Is it always better to be original than to imitate or use the ideas of others?Does planning interfere with creativity? Can people ever be truly original? Is it always necessary to find new solutions to problems?Do people put too much emphasis on learning practical skills?Do people need to “unlearn,” or reject, many of their assumptions and ideas?Given the importance of human creativity, one would think it should have a high priority among our concerns. But if we look at the reality, we see a different picture. Basic scientific research is minimized in favor of immediate practical applications. The arts are increasingly seen as dispensable luxuries. Yet as competition heats up around the globe, exactly the opposite strategy is needed.Adapted from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and InventionAssignment:Is creativity needed more than ever in the world today? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.SAT Essay写作范文In a worl d where economic prosperity and “getting ahead” in work and technology are highly valued, creativity and the arts are often shunted in favor of more “practical” pursuits. Students abandon dreams of acting or painting in order to major in medicine, computer technology, or engineering: highly profitable and scientific fields. Even with the advances in these fields, however, there is still a need for creativity in our world, because seeing things in a new way can make all the difference.Today, more and more public schools are forced to abandon their arts programs to make time for subjects like science and math: subjects in which all students must have a basic knowledge in order to succeed in higher education. However, by leaving these programs behind, children are deprived of the creative stimulation that the arts provide, and are taught to view theworld in “black and white” terms: one right answer to every problem. With a view such as this, how will children perform in the future? It may be assumed that all people will see things the same way, and propose only one solution to a problem, failing to see the bigger picture.Creativity has obviously influenced earlier generations in a positive way, so there is no need to eliminate creativity from our world. What would have happened if Franklin Roosevelt had never proposed his New Deal? The Great Depression might have persisted for some time, robbing even more families of their chance at prosperity and happiness. However, by proposing a new, creative solution fo r the problem of the U.S.’s depression, FDR pulled the nation out of its slump. Another example of how creativity has positively influenced the world happened just recently, with the introduction of hybrid cars. These new cars do not rely on as much oil as other cars do in order to operate, using alternative energy sources instead. Without the creative minds behind the invention of these cars, the world would rely so much on its limited oil reserves that fuel would eventually run out. Because of creativity, the world has a chance to find other energy sources.Though these practical applications for creativity are conducive to everyone, the common man benefits even more from the stimulation that the arts provide. In a world dominated by political powers and torn apart by war, entertainers in the arts can inspire hope and change in everyone. A child watching a Charlie Chaplin film might decide to join the gymnastics team, or a woman observing a Monet painting in a museum might become an elementary school art teacher: who knows? The arts can transport people to other places, into different ways of thinking. The importance of creativity in the world today is enormous, for it has both pragmatic and “important” applications. Creativity is both a source for inspiration and a problem-solving method, and without it, our world would greatly suffer.

以第一篇作文为例,源文本为2012年12月21日《洛杉矶时报》(Los Angeles Times)上发表的“Let There Be Dark”,作者为Paul Bogard先看源文本文章前官方表述的写作提示:“As you read the passage below, consider how Paul Bogard uses★evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims★reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims andevidence★stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choiceor appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed. Write an essay in which you explain how Paul Bogard builds an argument to persuade her audience that there are benefits to early exposure to technology. In your essay, analyze how Bogard uses one or more of the features listed in the box above(or features of your own choice)to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of her argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.Your essay should not explain whether you agree with Bogard’s claims, but rather explain how Bogard builds an argument to persuade her audience.

In response to our world’s growing reliance on artificial light, writer Paul Bogard argues that naturaldarkness should be preserved in his article “Let There be dark”. He effectively builds his argument by using a personal anecdote, allusions to art and history, and rhetorical questions.Bogard starts his article off by recounting a personal story- a summer spent on a Minnesota lake where there was “woods so dark that [his] hands disappeared before [his] eyes.”In telling this brief anecdote, Bogard challenges the audience to remember a time where they could fully amass themselves in natural darkness void of artificial light. By drawing in his readers with a personal encounter about night darkness, the author means to establish the potential for beauty, glamour, and awe-inspiring mystery that genuine darkness can possess. He builds his argument for the preservation of natural darkness by reminiscing for his readers a first-hand encounter that proves the “irreplaceable value of darkness.“This anecdote provides a baseline of sorts for readers to findcredence with the author’s claims.Bogard’s argument is also furthered by his use of allusion to art–Van Gogh’s “Starry Night “–and modern history–Paris’reputation as “The City of Light”.By first referencing “Starry Night”, a painting generally considered to be undoubtedly beautiful, Bogard establishes that the natural magnificence of stars in a dark sky is definite. A world absent of excess artificial light could potentially hold the key to a grand, glorious night sky like Van Gogh’saccording to the writer. This urges the readers to weigh the disadvantages of our world consumed by unnatural, vapid lighting.Furthermore, Bogard’s alludesto Paris as “the famed ‘city of light’”. He then goes on to state how Paris has taken steps to exercise more sustainable lighting practices. By doing this, Bogard creates a dichotomy between Paris’traditionally alluded-to name and the reality of what Paris is becoming - no longer “the city of light”, but more so “the city of light…before 2 AM”.This furthers his line of argumentation because it shows how steps can be an dare being taken to preserve natural darkness. It shows that even a city that is literally famous for being constantly lit can practically address light pollution in a manner that preserves the beauty of both the city itself and the universe as a whole. Finally, Bogardmakes subtle yet efficient use of rhetorical questioning to persuade his audience that natural darkness preservation is essential. He asks the readers to consider “what the vision of the night sky might inspire in each of us, in our children or grandchildren?”in a way that brutally plays to each of our emotions. By asking this question,Bogard draws out heart felt ponderance from his readers about the affecting power of an untainted night sky. This rhetorical question tugs at the readers’heart strings; while the reader may have seen an unobscured night skyline before, the possibility that their child or grandchild will never get the chance sways them to see as Bogard sees. This strategy is definitively an appeal to pathos, forcing the audience to directly face an emotionally-chargedinquiry that will surely spur some kind of response. By doing this, Bogard develops his argument, adding gutthral power to the idea that the issue of maintaining natural darkness is relevant and multifaceted.Writing as a reaction to his disappointment that artificial light has largely permeated the presence of natural darkness, Paul Bogard argues that we must preserve true, unaffected darkness. He builds this claim by making use of a personal anecdote, allusions, and rhetorical questioning.
