While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don’t keep your legs crossed.Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis(麻痹)of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.28.What can we learn about crossing one’s legs? ________A.It is a very bad social habit.B.It is usually practiced deliberately.C.It can do harm to people’s health.D.It can make others feel uncomfortable.29.According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can ________A.affect your blood pressureB.resist gravity effectivelyC.lead to heart attacks easilyD.improve the function of legs30.In the third paragraph “pins and needles” probably means ________A.slight sharp painsB.being a little nervousC.serious muscle injuriesD.being highly flexible31.What is the main purpose of the text? ________A.To compare common habits.B.To give readers some advice.C.To evaluate effects of an experiment.D.To introduce research methods.Bees play a vital role in the world. Unfortunately, bees are dying by the second. The main purpose of bees is to make honey. Honey, shockingly, does not exist for human consumption, it is essential to the insects. Honeybees store honey in their hives(蜂巢)in order for the bees to have energy for their flight muscles and for heating the hive during the winter period. They collect pollen(花粉)which supplies protein for young bees to grow.According to Honey, com, the increased production and quality of agricultural crops as a result of honey bee pollination is valued &t more than1$14/ 6 billion per year. These insects are responsible for over 70 of the fruits and vegetables we eat today, including apples, grapes, coffee, beans, and broccoli. So if they are so valuable to agriculture, why do they keep dying off? A key suspect seems to be pesticides(农药). Honeybees who are exposed to pesticides result in the damage to their neurological(神经的)functions, specifically memory or behavior. And that’s why the majority of worker bees disappear and leave behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees to care for the remaining immature bees and the queen. There are several other causes to the decline of bees, including the destruction of natural habitat, like woodlands, forests, and other habitats for bees. Climate change is also a factor in the decline of the wild bee population.Actually, there are a variety of methods to help the bee population grow. One way is to start your own organic garden by planting bee-friendly plants. Pesticides are used in both industrial practices and even in your home, so it is best to find organic seeds and weed killers.32.Why do honeybees store honey in their hives? ________A.To provide enough honey for human to consume.B.To draw protein out of honey for young bees.C.To help attract other insects and make hives stronger.D.To strengthen bee muscles and heat hives in winter.33.Apples and beans are mentioned in the third paragraph to show that ________A.bees supply human beings with basic foodB.bees mainly live on these agricultural cropsC.bees are of great importance to fruits and vegetablesD.bees can bring in more money for famers every year34.What is most likely to cause the worker bees to leave their hives behind? ________A.The lack of food.B.The abuse of pesticides.C.The fighting among bees.D.The destruction of the habitats.35.What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? ________A.Another way to save bees.B.Other tips for choosing seeds.C.More methods to plant green organic fruits.D.Causes of the decline in the wild bee population.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Empathy, the Key to Being KindIn science class, your teacher tells everyone to find a partner for a project. Out of the comer of your eye, you notice one girl sitting alone and not making eye contact with anyone. You think about asking her to be your partner, but you’re afraid people will think you’re uncool. You don’t reach out. 36Empathy is being able to understand and actually feel what someone else is feeling. For some people, this comes naturally; for others, it takes a bit more work. 37 When you practice being empathetic, it gets easier to make kindness a part of your everyday life. If you can understand why people are feeling down, you’ll want to help them. Here are some ideas that can help you.38 Someone not being able to find a group in class might not seem like a big deal—but part of being kind is noticing when someone seems sad, hurt or uncomfortable. After all, you have to notice how people feel in order to feel empathy and want to help them! When you’re trying to make kindness second nature, really getting other people’s feelings is important 39 think about a time when you felt that way. Didn’t you wish someone would reach out to you? If someone had offered you a few words of comfort, wouldn’t it have made you feel so much happier? So, when you find people around you who are feeling down next time, do not hesitate to put yourself in their shoes and reach out to them with a kind gesture. 40 There is always a time when you expect others to relate to you and feel what you feel.A.And your kindness will be finally rewarded.B.But empathy is super important to being kind.C.Be open to learning more about what you don’t understand.D.One way to practice empathy is to pay attention to the people around you.E.However, you never know showing empathy may make all the difference to her.F.You don’t have to have a similar background to someone else to feel empathy for them.G.Whenever you find someone might be feeling lonely or sad, put yourself in his shoes. I retired from my family business four years ago. It is a sad reality that people don’t realize how vacillating the idea of beauty can be from one country to another.Think of the most typical American girl you know. The Maasai tribe in Kenya focuses on how clean people are, and how stylish their piercings (穿孔) are. This tribe’s culture is to be a brave fighter, so they will cut their skin with patterns in it to show that they are strong. If you don’t look fierce, you are not beautiful.Other countries like North Korea and South Korea have their own unique views on beauty. In an interview, a woman who has lived in both North and South Korea claims that beauty in North Korea is based more on your ability to be a good woman and wife. She says that women in North Korea are less concerned about fashion and beauty in the physical sense. It marks the approach of summer. The English developed their May Day festivals from the Roman festival called Floralia. In the festival of Floralia, the Romans gathered flowers to honor the goddess of spring. Flora. In the Middle Ages, May Day became the favorite holiday of many English villages. People gathered flowers to decorate their homes and churches, sang spring songs and chose a king and a queen ofMay. Villagers danced around a tall pole fixed upright in the ground, called a maypole, each holding the end of a ribbon attached to the top of the pole. They tied the ribbons around the pole until it was covered with bright colors. They collected dew (露水) on May Day morning and washed their faces with it because they believed that the dew on the day had the magic power to regain youth.Nowadays in Britain people no longer attach great importance to the day, but in some towns and villages people still celebrate it by choosing the May Queen and dancing around the maypole. May Queen is a girl selected as being the most beautiful on May Day. She is usually crowned with flowers and often driven in procession through the street. In the United States, the day has never been celebrated with the same enthusiasm as in Britain. But in many American towns and cities, children celebrate the day with dancing and singing. They often gather flowers in handmade paper baskets and hang them on the doorknobs of homes of friends' and neighbors' on May Day morning. At May Day parties, children select May Queens, dance around the maypole, and sing May Day songs.25. What do we know about the May Day in Britain in the Middle Ages?A. People wore bright colours.B. People celebrated it with enthusiasm.C. People presented flowers to the goddess of spring.D. People stayed at home instead of going to churches.26. Why did people wash their faces with dew on May Day?A. To bring good luck.B. To become prettier.C. To get magic power.D. To get young again.27. Paragraph 3 is mainly developed______.A. by comparisonB. by space C, by process D. by classificationCMany years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4, we were practically impecunious. My in-laws lived from hand to mouth, so we didn't expect any help from them. My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation. My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pick-up truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down. It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it. One winter evening, I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was. I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.It was heavy, so I called to my husband to carry into the house. Once inside, we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables, a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I can't remember it all, but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.A little while later I remembered that I hadn't taken the trash to the barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light —and that's when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch. That dinner was the best I can remember. We weren't able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was, we are forever grateful.28. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "impecunious" in Paragraph 1?A. Generous.B. Harmonious.C. Penniless.D. Stubborn.29. How did the author's husband support the family?A. By starting a garage.B. By selling food door to door.C. By delivering goods.D. By working as a shop assistant.30. How did the author feel when she saw the basket?A. She was annoyed.B. She was astonished.C. She was terrified.D. She felt a sense of relief.31. What may be the best title for the text?A. A helping hand in timeB. A struggling young coupleC. A tale of potatoesD. A reward from a strangerDCycling is well known to improve individual health and fitness; it also benefits the wider population in terms of economy, transport and environment. The EU promotes cycling via many measures primarily to achieve sustainable (可持续的) clean and energy efficient transport systems. However, despite the fact that benefits outweigh the risks by 20:1, many consider the risk too great and that the fear of danger on the road needs to be handled. Cycle lanes (车道) have been used to improve cyclists' safety and encourage more cyclists onto the road. This research in transport aims to study the effect of cycle lanes on cyclists' safety where passing space given by overtaking (超车) vehicles is concerned. In this study, the authors used a bicycle equipped with cameras to record vehicle overtakes in varying road situations to determine whether cycle lanes, colour block cycle lanes or no cycle lanes affect passing distances and cyclists' safety. Their 3 comparisons measuring vehicle passing widths found greater overall distances given with a cycle lane than without. Colour block vs. uncoloured cycle lanes showed little or no difference, as did no cycle lanes vs. colour block cycle lanes. Colour block lanes had a slight negative effect suggesting that drivers are more careful when cycle lanes have less definition (清晰度).Interestingly, the authors conclude that other factors have a far greater effect on cyclists' safety than presence or absence of cycle lanes. Road width, parking, opposing vehicle flow and speed were key influences on decreased passing widths. The authors also note that driver behaviour is a hugely important factor and urge more research in this area. "In order to reduce risk and encourage more cycling, reducing and calming the existing motorised traffic must be explored first." They suggest, "Lane width is the most significant variable (变量) to achieve asufficient vehicle passing distance. The narrow cycle lanes (<2m) may be not enough. Reconsideration of the entire road design and further exploration of driver behavioural factors is required. "32. What is the main purpose of the EU's promoting cycling?A. To reduce air pollution.B. To build better transport systems.C. To improve people's health,D. To help people save money on transport.33. According to the study, colour block lanes may______.A. make drivers a bit carelessB. cause no overtakingC. get cyclists to feel saferD. lead to greater passing distances34. In the researchers' eyes, the first step to encourage more cycling is to______.A. redesign and rebuild the roads in a cityB. do more research in public bicycle programsC. restrict the number of vehicles running on roadD. make strict traffic rules to control driver behavior35. The authors of the research think that driver behavior______.A. needs further exploringB. is an unimportant factorC. makes cycle lanes narrowerD. is the most significant variable第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
