Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:The reflective towers of New York City, which is on the Atlantic migrating(迁徙的) route, can be deadly for birds.“We live in an age of glass,”said Ms. Laurel,an architect. (76) “It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights, and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is.”About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into buildings in the city each year. Often, they strike the lower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat (栖息地) loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year.(77) As glass office and apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too have calls to makethem less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standards for new buildings in July. The United States Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings, will introduce a bird-safety credit this fall as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes, however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviolet (紫外线的) signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and nets are the main options available.Often, only one section of a building needs to be changed. "You don't necessarily have to treat every window," Ms. Laurel said. "It would be too expensive to do the whole building." The Jacob IC Javits Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations, is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns.1. What is the main idea of the passage?A. New York is a city of glass towers.B. Glass towers are dangerous for migrating birds.C. New York adopted new safety standards for buildings.D. Glass towers are a new trend in the United States.2. What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds?A. Climate change.B. Habitat loss.C. Lack of food.D. Crashing into buildings.3. What does the word“fixes”in the third paragraph probably mean?A. Choices.B. Explanations.C. Solutions.D. Developments.4. are used in the alteration of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.A. Dot patternsB. ShadesC. NetsD. Covers5. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. In many cases, the whole building needs to be altered to prevent bird crashes.B. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is the first building to deal with the problem of birdcrashes.C. About 90,000 birds are killed due to habitat loss in New York City each year.D. Unfortunately, glass designs that use ultraviolet signals are still in their early stages.Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Today's students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F. D. R., and they live in a world where amazing innovations (革新) are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford; Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was at Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital (数字的), they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to fred kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship (企业家才能) education, in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them.A report published last year by the Kauffman Foundation, which finances programs to promote innovation on campuses, noted that more than 5,000 entrepreneurship programs are offered on two-and four-year campuses-up fromjust 250 courses in 1985. Lesa Mitchell, a Kauffman vice president, says that the foundation is extending the reach of its academic influence, which used to be found only inbusiness schools. Now, the concept of entrepreneurship is blooming in engineering programs and medical schools, and even in the liberal arts. “Our interest is inall the programs,”she says.“We need to spread out from the business school.”Either as class projects or on their own_, students in a variety of majors are coming up with ideas, writing business plans and seeing them through to prototype and, often, market. In their spare time, students in agricultural economics at Purdue invent new uses for bean; industrial design majors at Syracuse, in a special laboratory, create wearable technologies.(78) The entrepreneurship movement has its critics' especially among those who see college asa time for extensive academic exploration. “I just don't think that entrepreneurship ranks so high in terms of national: need,”says Daniel S. Greenberg, author of Science for Sale: The Perils, Rewards and Delusions of Campus Capitalism.Leonard A. Schlesinger, Babson College's president, says that the question of whether innovation can really be taught is“an age-old argument.”6. When Google and Facebook were established, the founders were still__________.A. in high schoolB. in the armyC. in primary schoolD. at college7. According to the passage, what is the main purpose of entrepreneurship education?A. To prepare students for future academic life.B. To prepare students to fred oppommities and seize them.C. So, in a new paper, two researchers set about trying to find out what the typical American regrets most. In telephone surveys, Neal Roese, a psychologist and professor of marketing at the School ofmanagement at Northwestern UniverSity, and Mike Morrison, a doctoral candidate in psychology at University of Illinois, asked 370 Americans, aged 19 to 103, to talk about their most notable regret. Participants were asked what the regret was, when it happened, whether it was a result of something they did or didn't do, and whether it was something that could still be fixed. The most commonly mentioned regrets involved romance (浪漫的事) (18%)——lost loves or unfulfilled relationships. Family regrets came in second (16%), with people still feeling badly about being unkind to their brothers or sisters in childhood. Other frequently reported regrets involved career (13%), education (12%), money (10%) and parenting (9%).Roese and Morrison's study, which is to be published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, is significant in that it surveyed a wide range of the American public, including people of all ages and socio-economic and educational backgrounds. Previous studies on regret have focused largely on college students, who predictably tend to have education-focused regrets, like wishing they had studied harder or a different major. The new survey shows that in the larger population, a person's "life circumstances accomplishments, shortcomings, situation in life- inject considerable fuel into the fires of regret," the authors write.(79) People with less education, for instance, were more likely to report education regrets. People with higher levels of education had the most career regrets. And those with no romantic parmer tended to hold regrets regarding love.Broken down (分解、细分) by sex, more women (44%) than men (19%) had regrets about love and family not surprising, since women "value social relationships more than men," the authors write. In contrast, men (34%) weremore likely than women (27%) to mention work-related regrets, wishing they'd chosen a different career path, for instance, or followed their passion. (80) Many participants also reported wishing they had worked less to spend more time with their children. There was an even split between regrets about inaction (not doing something) and action (doing something you wish you didn't). But, like previous studies, the current research found that some regrets are more likely than others to persist over time: people tend to hang on longer to the regret of inaction; meanwhile, regrets of action tend to be more recent.11. In the second paragraph, the author shows__________.A. the researchers' findingsB. the importance of familyC. the importance of moneyD. the importance of career12. According to the passage, college student participants mainly had regrets abouttheir__________.A. family and childhoodB. study and majorC. career and jobD. romance and fear13. 北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试(A).doc
北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试(A)2009.11.21Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:According to a recent surv, ey, employees in many companies today work longer hours than employees did in 1979. They also take shorter vacations than employees in 1979. It seems that Americans are working harder today than ever before. Or are they? A management consultant, Bill Meyer, decided to find out. For three days, he observed an investment banker hard at work. Meyer wrote down everything the banker did during his long workday. At the end of the three-day period, Meyer reviewed the banker's activities with him. What did they find out? They discovered that the man spent 80 percent of his time doing unnecessary work. For example, he attended unnecessary meetings, made redundant (多余的) telephone calls, and spent time packing and unpacking his two big briefcases.(76) Apparently many people believe that the more time a person spends at work, the more he or she accomplishes. When employers evaluate employees, they often consider the amount of time on the job in addition to job performance. Employees know this. Although many working people can do their job effectively during a regular 40-hour work week, they feel they have to spend more time on the job after normal working hours so that the people who can promote them see them.A group of headhunters (猎头) were asked their opinion about a situation. They had a choice of two candidates for an executive position with an important company. The candidates had similar qualifications for the job. For example, they were both reliable. One could do the job well in a 40-hour work week. The other would do the same job in an 80-hour work week just as well. According to a headhunting expert, the 80-hour-a-week candidate would get the job. The time this candidate spends on the job may encourage other employees to spend more time at work, too. Employers believe that if the employees stay at work later, they may actually do more work. However, the connection between time and productivity (生产率) is not always positive. (77) In fact. many studies indicate that after a certain point, anyone's productivity and creativity begin to decrease. Some employees are not willing to spend so much extra, unproductive time at the office. Once they finish their work satisfactorily, they want to relax and enjoy themselves. For these people, the solution is to find a company that encourages people to do both.1. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Many people work long hours but do not always do a lot of work.B. Most people can get more work done by working longer hours.C. Most Americans work 80 hours a week, and some work even longer.D. People can make more money by working longer hours.2. The management consultant wanted to fmd outA. how hard the investment banker worked during his work hoursB. when people spent time doing unnecessary work in their officeC. if people needed vacation after working hard for a certain period of timeD. whether Americans were really working harder than they had done before3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The more time a person spends at work, the more he or she accomplishes.B.Employers do not judge their employees' job performance according to theamount of working time.C. Some people work more than 40 hours a week in the hope of getting promotion.D. Allemployees are willing to spend extra time at work.4. The 80-hour-a-week candidate would get the job because employers believe_____.A. that he is more reliableB. his example would lead other employees to work longer hoursC. he has better qualificationsD. he could encourage other employees to do a better job5. The expression “to do both”in the last paragraph is_____.A. to finish their work satisfactorily and relax and enjoy themselvesB. to pay attention to both performance and productivityC. to work long hours and have short vacationsD. to relax and enjoy themselves quite frequentlyPassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Many private institutions of higher education around the country are in danger. Not ail will be saved, and perhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quaiity schools just as there are low-quality businesses. We have no obligation to save them simply because .they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. They are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial difficulty, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenues (收入) significantly. Raising fees doesn't bring in more revenue, for each time fees go up, the, enrollment (注册人数) goes down, or the mount that must be given away in student aid goes up. (78) Schools are bad businesses, whether rmblic or orivate, not usually because of bad management but because of the nature of the business. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, thriving but threatened, that I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollments, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. (79) There is no basis. for arguing that private schools are bound to be better than public schools. There are plentiful examples to the contrary. Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity (多样性) is a national necessity. Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms ofeducation. In ah imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous, ha an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Eager supporters of public higher education know the importance of keeping private higher education healthy.6. For most, who speak Spanish at home, it's becoming their third language. They've been heating and using Chinese words since nursery, and it's natural to give a “ni hao”when strangers enter the classroom.“It's really fun!”says Miranda Lucas, taking a break from a lesson that includes a Chinese interview with Jackie Chan. “I'm teaching my mom to speak Chinese.”The classroom scene at McCormick is unusual, but it may soon be a common phenomenon in American schools, where Chinese is rapidly becoming the hot new language. Government officials have long wanted more focus on useful languages like Chinese, and pressure from them -- as well as from business leaders, politicians, and parents -- has produced a quick growth in the number of programs.Chicago city officials make their best effort to include Chinese in their public schools. Their program has grown to include 3,000 students in 20 schools, with more schools on a waiting list. Programs have also spread to places like Los Angeles, New York City, and North Carolina. Supporters see knowledge of the Chinese language and culture as an advantagein a global economy where China is growing in importance. “This is an interesting way to begin to engage with the world's next superpower,”says Michael Levine, director of education at the Asia Society, which has started five new public highschools that offer Chinese. “Globalization has already changed the arrangements in terms of how children today are going to think about their careers, The question is when, not whether, the schools are going to adjust.”(80) The number of students leaming Chinese is tiny compared with how many study Spanish or French. But one report shows that before-college enrollment (报名人数) nearly quadrupled between 1992 and 2002, from 6,000 to 24,000. Despite the demand, though, developing programs isn't easy. And the No. one difficulty, everyone agrees, is having enough teachers. Finding teacher “is the challenge,”says Scott McGinnis, an academic adviser for a language institute and a Chinese teacher for 15 years at the college level. “Materials are easy comparison. Or getting schools funded.”11. The best title for this passage might be_____.A. Next Hot Language to Study: ChineseB. Next Hot Language to Study: SpanishC.Next Hot Language to Study: FrenchD. Unlike traditional university students who have the luxury of dedicated English courses throughout their academic journey, we working adults often find ourselves juggling study time with work and family responsibilities. Preparing for this high-stakes exam can be an uphill battle, but with the right guidance and strategies, it is a challenge that can be surmounted. The Beijing Adult Undergraduate Degree English Proficiency Test is a comprehensive assessment that evaluates our command of the English language across multiple domains, including reading comprehension, listening skills, written expression, and vocabulary knowledge. It is a crucial milestone that we must pass to obtain our hard-earned degrees, and the weight of its importance cannot be overstated. When I first learned about the test requirements, I was overwhelmed by the breadth of material we were expected to cover. From intricate grammar rules to idiomatic expressions and academic writing styles, the scope of the exam seemed endless. However, as I delved deeper into the preparation process, I realized that breaking it down into manageable chunks was the key to success. One of the most valuable resources I discovered was the array of test preparation courses and materials specifically tailored for adult learners in Beijing. These offerings recognized the unique challenges we faced and provided targeted guidance to help us navigate the complexities of the exam. The instructors were experienced professionals who understood the nuances of the test and could offer practical advice on time management, study techniques, and test-taking strategies. In addition to formal courses, I also found immense value in forming study groups with fellow adult learners. We would meet regularly, share our insights and struggles, and hold each other accountable. This collaborative approach not only fostered a supportive learning environment but also enabled us to learn from one another's strengths and perspectives. As someone who had been out of the academic sphere for several years, one of my biggest challenges was reacquainting myself with the rigors of academic writing. The test's written expression component required a level of proficiency in organizing ideas, developing arguments, and adhering to stylistic conventions that had become rusty over time. Fortunately, the preparation materials provided ample practice opportunities and detailed feedback, allowing me to refine my writing skills gradually. The listening and reading comprehension sections of the test posed another set of hurdles. Not only did we need to demonstrate a solid understanding of the English language, but we also had to develop strategies for effectively processing and analyzing complex passages within a limited time frame. The preparation courses offered valuable techniques for active listening, note-taking, and identifying key information, all of which proved invaluable during the actual test.Throughout my preparation journey, I encountered numerous moments of frustration and self-doubt. Balancing work, family, and study commitments was a constant juggling act, and there were times when I questioned my ability to succeed. However, the unwavering support and encouragementfrom my loved ones, as well as the camaraderie of my fellow adult learners, kept me motivated and focused on my goal.On the day of the test, I entered the examination hall with a mixture of trepidation and determination. The hours that followed were a blur of concentrated effort, as I navigated through each section, drawing upon the strategies and knowledge I had acquired during my preparation. When I finally emerged from the test center, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment and relief.Reflecting on my journey, I cannot overstate the importance of the guidance and resources available to adult learners in Beijing. Without the dedicated support systems and tailored preparation materials, navigating the complexities of the English proficiency test would have been an insurmountable challenge. To my fellow adult learners embarking on this path, I offer this advice: embrace the process, seek out the available resources, and never underestimate the power of perseverance and determination. The road may be challenging, but the rewards of earning your well-deserved degree are immeasurable. In the end, the Beijing Adult Undergraduate Degree English Proficiency Test is not merely an academic hurdle; it is a testament to our resilience, our commitment to lifelong learning, and our unwavering pursuit of personal growth. By embracing the challenges and seizing the opportunities for guidance and support, we can emerge victorious, armed with the knowledge and skills to unlock new doors and shape our futures.篇3Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree as a Working Adult: The Beijing English Exam ChallengeAs a working professional in Beijing, the idea of going back to university for an undergraduate degree can seem daunting. Juggling a job, family responsibilities, and academic coursework is no easy feat. However, the prospect of career advancement and personal growth often motivates many of us to take on this challenge. One of the biggest hurdles we face is the English proficiency requirement – a crucial component that can make or break our dreams of earning that coveted Bachelor's degree. In Beijing, most universities mandate that adult learners pass an English proficiency exam before being admitted into their undergraduate programs. This exam is no walk in the park; it tests our language skills across multiple domains, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For many of us whohave been out of the academic loop for years, the thought of preparing for such a comprehensive test can be overwhelming.Fortunately, there are numerous resources and strategies available to help us conquer this linguistic Everest. In this essay, I will share my personal experiences and insights, hoping to provide a roadmap for fellow adult learners embarking on this journey. The Importance of English ProficiencyLet's start by acknowledging the significance of English proficiency in today's globalized world. Whether we like it or not, English has become the lingua franca of international business, academia, and communication. Mastering this language opens doors to a wealth of opportunities, both professionally and personally. In the context of pursuing a Bachelor's degree, English proficiency is crucial for several reasons. First and foremost, most university courses and textbooks are taught and written in English. Without a strong command of the language, comprehending lectures and course materials becomes an uphill battle. Secondly, many degree programs require students to conduct research, write papers, and present their findings – all of which necessitate excellent English skills.Furthermore, in today's interconnected world, the ability to communicate effectively in English can be a game-changer in our careers. Employers increasingly value candidates who can collaborate with international colleagues, negotiate with global partners, and represent their companies on the world stage. My Personal JourneyWhen I first decided to pursue a Bachelor's degree, the English proficiency requirement loomed large. Having been out of the academic realm for over a decade, my English skills were rusty, to say the least. I knew that passing the exam would be a formidable challenge, but I was determined to tackle it head-on.I began by assessing my strengths and weaknesses through practice tests and diagnostic evaluations. This helped me identify the areas that needed the most attention, such as academic writing, listening comprehension, and vocabulary expansion. Armed with this knowledge, I developed a comprehensive study plan, allocating time for each skill area and setting achievable goals. One of the most valuable resources I encountered was online tutoring platforms. These platforms connected me with experienced English instructors who could tailor their teaching methods to my specific needs. Whether it was practicingconversational fluency, dissecting complex reading passages, or mastering grammar rules, these tutors provided invaluable guidance and feedback. In addition to online tutoring, I also explored various study materials, including textbooks, practice tests, and online resources. I found that combining different materials and approaches helped to reinforce my learning and keep me engaged.Perseverance and DisciplinePreparing for the English proficiency exam was a marathon, not a sprint. There were times when I felt overwhelmed and discouraged, especially when faced with seemingly insurmountable language barriers. However, I quickly learned that perseverance and discipline were key to staying on track.I established a consistent study routine, carving out dedicated time slots in my busy schedule. Whether it was early morning sessions before work or late-night study sessions after putting the kids to bed, I made a conscious effort to stick to my study plan. Additionally, I found it helpful to set small, achievable goals along the way, celebrating each milestone as a stepping stone towards my ultimate objective.Support Systems and MotivationThroughout this journey, I realized the importance of having a strong support system. My family and friends played a crucial role in keeping me motivated and focused. They understood the significance of this endeavor and provided encouragement whenever I felt like giving up.I also discovered the power of connecting with fellow adult learners who were on similar paths. We formed study groups, shared resources, and motivated each other through the challenges we faced. This sense of camaraderie was invaluable, reminding me that I was not alone in this struggle. The Reward of PerseveranceAfter months of dedicated preparation, the day of the English proficiency exam finally arrived. I walked into the testing center with a mixture of nerves and confidence, knowing that I had given my all in the lead-up to this moment. As I worked through the various sections of the exam, I could feel the culmination of my efforts paying off. The once-daunting language barriers seemed more manageable, and I found myself navigating the test with a newfound sense of clarity and focus. When the results arrived, and I saw that I had passed the exam, the feeling of accomplishment was indescribable. It was a testament to the power of perseverance, discipline, and unwavering determination.ConclusionPursuing a Bachelor's degree as a working adult in Beijing is a challenging endeavor, with the English proficiency requirement being one of the most formidable obstacles. However, with the right mindset, resources, and support systems, this challenge can be conquered. My journey has taught me valuable lessons about the importance of time management, consistent effort, and belief in oneself. It has also reinforced the idea that learning is a lifelong process, and there is no age limit to acquiring new skills and knowledge. As I embark on the next phase of my academic journey, I carry with me the confidence and language proficiency gained through this experience. I encourage fellow adult learners to embrace the challenge, seek out the necessary resources, and never lose sight of their goals.Remember, the path to success is paved with perseverance and determination. With unwavering focus and a commitment to continuous learning, the dream of earning that Bachelor's degree is well within reach.。

Many countries have stopped using pennies. Is it time for the U.S. to do the same?Jarden and the zinc industry are fighting to keep the penny. Since , Jarden has given $1.2 million to Americans for Common Cents (ACC). The group's mission is to keep the penny in use. Mark Weller is ACC's executive director. He argues that there are three main reasons for keeping the penny: Without it, we would become more reliant on the five-cent coin, which also has problems; charities(慈善机构)that depend on penny drives would not be able to raise as much money; and a survey shows that 67% of Americans want to keep the penny. (77) Many people surveyed said they feared they would end up paying more for products. Many experts disagree with ACC, They point to the dozens of countries that have gotten rid of their lowest-value coins without raising prices for consumers. And charities don't seem too concerned either.President Barack Obama says the mint could explore using cheaper metals to make pennies. Steel is less expensive than zinc. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1 Questions I to 5 are based on the following passage:In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor’s degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same question, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Generally, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an “objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like correct answers to students who have not learned the material properly.1. It has been demonstrated that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins to water without vitamins even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor was added to the vitamin-enriched fluid, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria feeding arrangement, with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns, but that over a period of time they managed to select well-balanced diet. So, in selecting food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Apparently, there is a kind of “body wisdom,” which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long-established habits. Some people eat fox, dog and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.16. In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the rat’s drinking water to ________A. encourage rats to drink vitamin-enriched waterB. find out rats preference in flavorC. test whether rats know which drink is good for themD. demonstrate that vitamins are tasteless17. The author implied in the passage that most of us _________A. eat a balanced dietB. choose the food that is of nutritionC. have the habits influenced by the surroundingsD. like to eat the food with a fragrant flavor20. As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that _________A. both have the wisdom to choose a balanced dietB. both prefer flavored food and drinkC. both have the same eating patternsD. both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavorsPart II Vocabulary and Structure (40%)Directions: In this part there are 40 incomplete sentences. It’s tough to have a siblingbecause at the end of the day a sibling is, in some ways, competing for the scarceresource of parents’ attention or love.”One thing that parents can do to remove jealousy and rivalry is to help each childfeel valued in his or her specialness. Janine Domingues says: “Fix some space – it’syour brother’s day today and tomorrow’s going to be yours. That can create a healthyrelationship with parents and siblings. The more attention children feel from parents, the more connected they feel to the parents and actually the more likely they’ll seesiblings as friends and not rivals.”(77) The other is to avoid comparing siblings with each other. It’s easy for someparents to try to encourage one child by comparing him or her with a sibling. ButKennedy suggests that parents should look at how much they’re reinforcingcompetition by pitting siblings against each other. She says: “Sometimes it feels likethe easier way to get a child to do something that a sibling is doing, but we are thengetting them into gazing at each other as rivals again, rather than as friends.”1. Finding ways to prevent that is the motivation driving a team of researchers at the University of California at Davis. They are trying to help the world’s scientists determine how dangerous each virus might be by ranking its likelihood of being transmitted( 传染 )to humans and changing into a form that humans couldeasily pass to one another. The team has launched a web-based tool called Spillover. It evaluates 32 riskfactors to generate a risk score. “We looked at viruses known to be transmissible from animals to humans and those that were newly discovered,” says Zoe Grange, who worked on the project as a wildlife disease scientist. By marking “high-risk” viruses, this publicly available database is intended to create a watchlist (观察名单) for scientists and policymakers.(78) Grange and her colleagues came up with the idea of a ranking tool in thespring of 2017. The Spillover database is designed so that researchers can add their own reports. They can add their virus discoveries and do their own rankings. (79) It’s a tool everyone can use. Unlike other tools that evaluate the risk of a limited number of viruses, this database focuses on 887 viruses found in wildlife. SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus behind COVID-19, comes in second place for its likelihood to cause disease and spread within human populations.6. Ever since air fryers(空⽓炸锅) came out, they have been ranked as “must-have home cooker” status, and it’s been easier than ever to eat vegetables, fish and meat that taste like they’ve been deep fried. To learn the benefits of air frying, we spoke to some food specialists from aroundthe country.Let’s not shrink the miracle of air frying: It’s having your cake and eating it too."Air fryers are one of the best ways to get the same taste of fried foods without the unhealthiness that comes along with them,” Bansari Acharya said. “It preserves the good things in the food items as it isn’t exposed to hot oil. It also reduces the amount of various fats in foods, lowering the risk for heart disease.”When compared with deep frying, air frying is clearly the healthier choice. That’s because deep frying involves using too much oil while air frying simply uses heat and a powerful fan to efficiently and evenly cook the food in your fryer. It requires zero oil, though some can be helpful. “Since food prepared in an air fryer requires hardly any cooking oil, it has a lot less fat than traditional frying methods,” Morgyn Clair said.“The healthiest way to air fry is to use as little oil as possible. Use just enough so your food doesn’t stick.”(80) The type of food you’re air frying can make a difference when it comes toyour health. Certain foods can tum more nutritious(有营养的)when air fried, such as potatoes, corn and beans and so on while other foods like meat can become harmful to your health.11. Today I want to share with you all about my journey of pursuing a bachelor's degree as an adult in Beijing. Ithas been quite a challenge, but also a very rewarding experience for me.First of all, let me tell you why I decided to go back to school as an adult. I always wanted to further my education and enhance my career opportunities, but life circumstances didn't allow me to do so until now. So, I took the leap and enrolled in a university in Beijing to pursue my dream. The first day of school was very nerve-wracking for me. I was worried about fitting in with younger students and keeping up with the academic workload. But, to my surprise, everyone was very welcoming and supportive. My classmates were impressed by my courage to pursue a degree at my age, and the teachers were very understanding and helpful.Studying in Beijing has been a fascinating experience for me. The city is rich in culture and history, and I have had the chance to explore its many attractions during my free time. From the Great Wall to the Forbidden City, Beijing never fails to amaze me with its beauty and grandeur.Of course, studying in a foreign country comes with its challenges. The language barrier was one of the biggest hurdles for me, but I didn't let that stop me from excelling in my studies.I signed up for extra language classes and practiced with my classmates, and gradually my English skills improved.Another challenge I faced was balancing my studies with work and family responsibilities. It was not easy, but with proper time management and support from my loved ones, I was able to juggle everything and stay on track with my academic goals. Now, as I approach the end of my degree program, I can proudly say that all the hard work and sacrifices were worth it. I have learned so much, not only academically but also personally.I have grown more confident, independent, and resilient throughout this journey. To all the adults out there thinking about going back to school, I say go for it! It's never too late to pursue your dreams and further your education. With determination and hard work, anything is possible. Thank you for listening!篇3Hey guys, have you heard about the adults going back to school to get their bachelor's degree in Beijing in the second half of 2023? It's so cool! Let me tell you all about it.First of all, let me explain what a bachelor's degree is. It's like a super special diploma you get after studying really hard in college for about four years. And guess what? Grown-ups in Beijing are now getting the chance to earn this degree even if they missed out on doing it when they were younger. The classes are all in English, which is so awesome because it helps the adults improve their language skills. They learn all sorts of interesting things like history, science, and math. And they also have to write lots of essays and do cool projects to show what they've learned.
