Talks between each side's legal representatives have been ensuing for about a month now. They were close to a settlement about a week ago but have since slid back from their earlier talks due to new information that has been released by the FDA. The FDA announced the discovery of a substance in both companies’ migraine medication mix that exceeds the daily recommended amount by 12%. Soon after the crew started work, there were many signs that warned me of bad things to come. I realize now that I should have taken those signs seriously and put a stop to the project to minimize the damage that it has since caused. In summary, the entire project has been a huge catastrophe. Firstly, the crew showed lit professionalism by being late in meeting their starting times on a daily basis and took long breaks during crucial stages, which caused extra work for everyone else. As well, certain areas requiring supervision were left unattended for long periods of time, and considerable garbage was left in areas that were not designated for waste removal. These issues have caused much stress to our employees and reduced the productivity of our office over these weeks. Normally, our senior supervisor would have worked alongside the crew on this project but, due to extenuating circumstances, could not. I am shocked and severely sorry for the troubles this has caused, and to the reputation of my company. Please accept my deepest apologies and our offer to complete the work properly immediately--with payment for hard costs only. (Our labor and other fees will be waived entirely.) John7.From: R. Baker To: P. AverySubject: Working Hours Sent: March 13, 10:40 A.M.Hi Pat, I would like to request a change in my working hours. I currently work the morning shift, Monday through Friday. If possible, I would like to work the afternoon shift on at least three days of each week. Thanks, Randal Baker正确答案:Dear Randal: In response to your e-mail asking to change your shift, I’m afraid we do not usually allow employees to mix morning and afternoon shifts. As you will see in the staff handbook, there is a section explaining the rules about changing shifts. However, I should add that we can sometimes make special exceptions for staff who have a particular problem related to family commitments. Would you mind telling me the main reason or circumstances for your requesting to change your shift like this? Sincerely, PatriciaWrite an opinion essayIn this part of the test, you will write an essay in response to a question that asks you to state, explain, and support your opinion on an issue. Typically, an effective essay will contain a minimum of 300 words.8.In some professions and occupations, such as in the health-care profession, employees must often work very long shifts of twelve or more hours. What is your opinion about this practice? Give reasons or examples to support your opinion.正确答案:There are a number of professions in which employees must work long hours. In my opinion, this is only acceptable when the nature of the job demands it. First of all, it should be mentioned that there is a difference between working irregular hours and unsociable hours. Some people work very long hours, for various reasons. They probably work a longer working week than average. They may have a difficult job, or be very ambitious. Working long hours in this way is unnecessary. It is often because there is a “long-hours culture”in a company or industry. In addition, some people go into an industry in which unsociable hours are the norm. For example, the retail sector has expanded its opening hours in recent years, which means that employees have to work longer and more unsociable hours as more and more shops open longer. In general, these working hours are not essential, but social pressure and market demands have allowed them to become the norm. In contrast, there are certain professions in which working long unsociable hours is not only necessary and usual but essential. The medical profession is a good example of this. People depend on having access to medical staff in an emergency twenty-four hours a day. If medical staff were not available twenty-four hours a day, the quality ofcare for patients would go down. Other examples of these professions are the emergency services, such as the police and fire service. Police officers and fire fighters would be unable to do their jobs if they worked a typical 9-to-5 workday. On the other hand, working excessively long hours can compromise people’s ability to do their jobs. For example, junior doctors often work in excess of one hundred hours per week. Sometimes they are so tired that they could make an incorrect diagnosis or prescription. In conclusion, it is my opinion that workers should only be required to work long hours when the job demands it, but that this needs to be balanced with concern for their own and the public’s safety.。
